Gossip: Prince Harry’s New Career; Anderson Cooper Wants Kathy Griffin Back

Prince Harry did such a great job interviewing President Obama that he is now getting offers of a new career: TV host!

“The Prince Harry interview got massive ratings and made news around the world. Now the BBC have offered him his own show interviewing whomever he wants,” sources tell STRAIGHT SHUTER. “Harry can literally pick up a phone and book the biggest guests in the world. If he had his own TV show he would be bigger than Oprah. Who is going to say “no” to being interviewed by Harry?”

Insiders reveal that Harry has not accepted the full-time job offer but has agreed to do several more interviews over the next year. “He is good at this and it is a lot more fun than kissing babies and opening hospitals,” adds another source.

Anderson Cooper Wants Kathy Griffin Back

Andy Cohen replaced Kathy Griffin on CNN’s “New Years Eve Countdown,” but it wasn’t just the viewers who were disappointed; even Anderson missed his longtime co-host.

“Anderson and Kathy finished each others sentences. She knew how to bring out the best in him. Kathy knew what to say to make him blush and laugh. She is a comedian and has years of material at her disposal. Kathy has thousands of jokes ready to drop when the moment is right. Plus, no one does more preparation than she does. Kathy would work hours and hours writing the show and working on funny lines and funny bits. It was unfair to think Andy Cohen could replace that,” sources tell STRAIGHT SHUTER. “Anderson misses Kathy. Andy was doing his best but it wasn’t the same without her. The whole crew knew her and she knew all their names. Andy doesn’t roll like that. He isn’t as friendly and seemed nervous. Without Kathy, Anderson thinks it might be time for him to retire from Times Square and let CNN try something totally different.”

American Public To Jeff Sessions: Keep Your Hands Off Legal Marijuana

It took just one week for the American public to send a clear message to Attorney General Jeff Sessions: Keep your hands off of our legal marijuana and we don’t care much for you or your politics.

Three separate polls released this week forcefully conclude that the voters disagree with Sessions’ reversal of Obama-era protections that relaxed federal marijuana laws in states where it is legalized. “The demographics say [cannabis] is here to stay, either for fun or to provide medical comfort. And the message to Attorney General Jeff Sessions: Hands off,” said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

Here is a quick look at the three new polls:

Quinnipiac

In addition to the overwhelming support for medical marijuana, the Quinnipiac poll also revealed that Sessions is extremely unpopular. American voters have a 47-14 percent unfavorable opinion of the attorney general. That percentage would likely be higher, but 37 percent haven’t heard enough about him to form an opinion.

Seven out of every 1o voters oppose enforcing federal marijuana laws in states that have legalized medical or recreational marijuana. Not one demographic group supports enforcing federal laws.

The Quinnipiac poll found that 58 of voters think recreational marijuana should be legal — 79 percent of 18- to 34-year-olds hold that view. When it comes to medical marijuana, 91 percent want it. Only 6 percent said they opposed medical marijuana.

Every party, gender, education, age and racial group supports legalization of marijuana except Republicans, who are opposed 62 – 33 percent, and voters over 65 years old, who are opposed 50 – 41 percent. Hispanic voters are divided 48 – 48 percent.

Rasmussen

A Rasmussen Reports telephone survey found that 56 percent of American voters believe cannabis laws should be enforced at the state level. Only 29 percent want the federal government to set the regulations.

All demographic groups agree that this is a states’-rights issue. By party, 57 percent of Republicans and 56 percent of Democrats agree. Among unaffiliated voters, 54 percent agree.

HuffPost/YouGov

Echoing the other two surveys, the HuffPost/YouGov poll found that Americans reject Sessions’ action last week. According to this poll, 56 percent oppose federal efforts to stop the sale and use of marijuana in legal states — 44 percent STRONGLY opposed federal interference. Only 30 percent of those surveyed agreed with Sessions.

The HuffPost/YouGov poll revealed that Americans want this issue left up to the individual states.  Nearly half, 47 percent want marijuana laws determined at the state level, and only 32 percent believe it’s a federal issue. Another 22 percent were undecided.

Booze, Molly or Weed: Which Heightens Sexual Desire The Most?

0

Ecstasy makes you horny. So does booze. Marijuana just makes you chill.  These three obvious sentences were confirmed by a study published this week in the scientific journal Psychology and Sexuality.

The report revealed that compared to marijuana, alcohol and ecstasy were more strongly associated with heightened perceived sexual effects, including attraction, sexual desire, and social outgoingness.

Increased attraction — both feeling more attractive and attraction to others — was most commonly associated with drinking alcohol, followed by ecstasy. More than six out of ten participants reported feeling more attractive on alcohol (67 percent) or ecstasy (61 percent), but only a quarter (25 percent) felt more attractive on marijuana. Similarly, most participants reported that alcohol (72 percent) or ecstasy (64 percent) led them to be more attracted to others, while marijuana only increased attraction to others in about a quarter (27 percent) of respondents.

Increased social outgoingness — defined as outgoingness making users more likely to meet a partner — was reported by the majority of people who drank alcohol (77 percent) or used ecstasy (72 percent), yet only a quarter (26 percent) of users reported an increase on marijuana. The report was conducted by the Center for Drug Use and HIV/HCV Research at NYU Meyers College of Nursing.

The researchers surveyed 679 young adults (ages 18 to 25) entering electronic dance music parties at nightclubs and dance festivals in New York City to examine and compare self-reported sexual effects associated with the use of alcohol, marijuana, and ecstasy.

“These results align with previous research on the social effects of alcohol use, which link alcohol use to increased feelings of self-acceptance and decreased feelings of social anxiety in social situations,” said CDUHR researcher Joseph Palamar, PhD, MPH, the study’s lead author and an associate professor of population health at NYU Langone Health.

Which Substance Leads To Post-Sex Regret?

Post-sex regret was most common after alcohol (reported by 31 percent) compared to ecstasy (13 percent) and marijuana (7 percent). Palamar, who was not surprised by this finding, explained, “Alcohol is more commonly associated with regretful behavior such as ‘one-night stands.’ ”

Ecstasy — also known as the “love drug” — was more associated with heightened sexual intensity, length of sexual interaction, and orgasm intensity compared to alcohol and marijuana. But there are issues with performance while on these substances.

“While alcohol and ecstasy can increase sexual desire, these drugs can actually hinder sexual performance of males,” said Palamar. “Alcohol can numb the body, which can delay or prevent orgasm, and impotence is common while high on ecstasy, despite the drug increasing body sensitivity.”

Women reported mixed sexual effects when using marijuana. Marybec Griffin-Tomas, a doctoral candidate at NYU College of Global Health and coauthor of the paper, said, “While females may feel more sensitive to sexual contact while high on marijuana, they are more likely than males to report sexual dysfunction resulting from use.”

Science Proves Marijuana Heals Pain, Nausea, Spasms And Insomnia

The marijuana reform movement won big in 2016, legalizing the plant in a number of states for medicinal and recreational purposes. However, the US Drug Enforcement Administration has all but refused to allow the herb to be considered as a the legitimate, natural medication it is.

Even federal lawmakers, some of whom now represent legal marijuana states, have continued to twiddle their thumbs when it comes to pushing legislation to remove the outlaw status of the plant.

Meanwhile, 70 percent of the American population now believes cannabis should be made legal nationwide. But leading governmental controls still say they are worried the herb is not safe enough for a move of that magnitude. In fact, some argue that by making it legal, it could cause an uprising in addiction and turn the entire population into burnouts.

Yet, science says otherwise.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, which consists of some of the country’s top scientific minds, came forward with a detailed analysis entitled “The Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids,” which points out that the cannabis plant does in fact have medicinal properties and it is not likely to cause any harm.

The almost 400-page document, which was assembled with information swiped from around 24,000 scientific abstracts, condemns Uncle Sam for never once taking the opportunity to downgrade the Schedule I classification of the herb. The report goes on to suggests that this misstep has prevented the scientific community from truly understanding both the benefits and risks associated with the consumption of marijuana.

“There is a clear need to establish what is known and what needs to be known about the health effects of cannabis use,” the report reads.

Although the report does not paint the cannabis plant to be all-healing substance that it is often touted, there does seem to be enough evidence floating around out there labeling marijuana an effective treatment for pain, nausea associated with chemotherapy, muscle spasms and insomnia. But researchers simply could not produce enough cases studies to prove marijuana has the ability to cure cancer or ease the symptoms of epilepsy.

But researchers did conclude that there does not appear to be any correlation between the consumption of cannabis and the increased risk for killer conditions such as heat disease and stroke. They also said there does not seem to be any evidence of the herb being a gateway drug to addiction, nor could they find a single case of it causing an overdose death. In other words: Pot is mostly safe, at least from what we know at this point.

Marijuana advocates believe the report should be enough to persuade governmental forces to consider making some serious changes to federal pot policy in 2017.

“These findings clearly undermine the federal government’s decision to classify marijuana under Schedule I, which is reserved for substances with no medical value,” Mason Tvert, a spokesman for the Marijuana Policy Project, said in a statement. “It confirms that marijuana has several medical benefits and is not nearly as problematic as people are often led to believe.”

We Know The Reason Behind Meghan Markle’s Bizarre Christmas Gift To The Queen

A singing stuffed animal isn’t exactly the Christmas gift you’d likely give your future grandmother-in-law, let alone the Queen of England. But that’s exactly what Meghan Markle gave Queen Elizabeth II for her inaugural holiday with The Royals.

A source tells The Daily Star that Meghan bought Her Majesty a little hamster that sings. “It was so funny, especially when the corgis tried to take hold of the toy. She laughed and said ‘they can keep my dogs company.'” We imagine it’s similar to this:

Turns out, it’s a tradition for the Royal Family to give each other gag gifts. When you’re wealthy, you likely already have everything you want, right? The Queen reportedly burst out laughing when her corgis came through and tried to snatch the critter away from her. “She laughed and said, ‘they can keep my dogs company,'” according to the source.

The Daily Star reports that Meghan’s first Christmas with her future in-laws was a smashing success. In keeping with the tradition of their German heritage, they all exchanged gifts on Christmas Eve.

Winter Comfort Can Be Found In This Beef Bourguignon Recipe

The holidays are over. There’s no gathering of friends and family, no piles of wrapped presents and candy, or cookies in every shape, flavor and size. Today, my son had to once again had to wake up to a buzzing alarm clock, make his bed, pack a lunch and brush his teeth before noon. The next significant break isn’t until mid April, which to a 6th grader may as well be measured in light years and the temperature is in the single digits. Droopy dog looks downright gleeful compared to my little sad sack.

Contrary to the saddest boy on the planet, I’m breathing a sigh of relief. I’m ready to welcome back our routine, get back on the elliptical, and not come home with five pounds of butter every time I go to the grocery store. We’re going to have a few more kale salads for dinner and I’m definitely going back to a daily dose of steel cut oats for breakfast.

That said, there is still room for some hearty comfort meals in our diet. And that’s not a want, but a need, given the frigid temperature and biting wind. To me there is nothing more comforting than a big bowl of stew. Stew with a rich broth, tender chunks of meat and veg, and deep flavors developed over a long, slow simmer on the stove. My Guiness braised beef stew is one of my most popular recipes on the blog and today’s recipe is sure to give it a run for its money.

This is my riff on classic Beef Bourguignon, beef browned in bacon drippings and simmered until tender with mushrooms and carrots in a rich red wine sauce. I skip the pearl onions, swap the bacon for little chunks of pancetta and jazz up the sauce with a dash of this and a splash of that. Instead of cooking potatoes in the pot with the beef like a typical beef stew, I serve the Beef Bourguignon over a scoop of rustic mashed potatoes (leave the skins on and use a masher instead of a ricer) with a sprinkle of fresh herbs.

I’m hopeful that a bowl of Beef Bourguignon will ease my son’s winter blues and bring a little color back to his cheeks. After all, eating cozily by a fire is the silver lining to short days and chilly nights. And if a bowl of pure comfort doesn’t do the trick, it’s only about 170 days ’til summer vacation. But who’s counting…

Ingredients:

  • Related Story: What I Ate Today: Coquine’s Katy Millard

  • 4 oz pancetta, diced
  • 2 Tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 2½ lbs beef stew meat, cut into 2 inch chunks
  • ⅓ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 Tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 tsp anchovy paste
  • 1 Tbsp light brown sugar
  • 1 750 ml bottle good (drinkable) red wine (cabernet sauvignon or pinot noir)
  • 1½ cups beef stock
  • 1 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 Tbsp worcestershire sauce
  • 1 Tbsp unsweetened chocolate
  • 6 sprigs fresh thyme
  • ¼ cup fresh parsley, chopped (divided)
  • 1 lb baby carrots
  • 1 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 14 oz mixed mushrooms (cremini/oyster/shitake)
  • Kosher salt and pepper
  • *rustic mashed potatoes for servings

Instructions:

  1. Set a large dutch oven or heavy-bottomed pot over medium heat. Add the pancetta and cook until crisp and then remove from the pan.
  2. Add the butter and olive oil to the pan. Toss the stew meat with the flour and add in a single layer to the pot. Season with salt and pepper. Don’t overcrowd the pan or the meat will steam instead of brown. Do this in two batches if necessary.
  3. Once the meat is well browned, remove from the pan and add the onion, garlic, salt and pepper. Add additional oil if needed and adjust the temperature so the browned bits on the bottom of the pan do not burn.
  4. Saute the onion and garlic until translucent and then stir in the tomato paste, anchovy paste and brown sugar.
  5. Slowly add the wine, scraping all the brown bits from the bottom of the pan. Add the stock, soy sauce, worcestershire sauce, chocolate, thyme sprigs, half the parsley, and return the meat and pancetta to the pan. Season with salt and pepper.
  6. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Cover and reduce the heat to very low. Simmer for an hour, stirring occasionally.
  7. Add the carrots and simmer, covered, for another hour.
  8. In a separate nonstick saute pan, heat 1 Tbsp olive oil over medium high heat. Add the mushrooms and saute until browned. Reserve.
  9. Remove the lid from the dutch oven and add the sautéed mushrooms and remaining parsley. Remove the thyme sprigs or stems and discard. Increase the heat to med/low and simmer uncovered until the beef is super tender, about another 20-30 mins.
  10. Serve over rustic mashed potatoes if desired.

WATCH: IKEA Wants Women To Pee On Their New Ad And Here’s Why

IKEA has opened the flood gates with its newest DIY accessory. Instead of assembling a piece of furniture, the store is asking pregnant women to pee on their newest ad in order to receive a discount code. Easier? Yes. Grosser? Double yes.

The add, currently running in Sweden, reads “Peeing on this ad may change your life” and when an expectant mother urinates on it, a discount code for a crib is revealed. It’s the free pregnancy test nobody wanted.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bdxik2AgPrQ

Many think the add, which makes moms-to-be go the extra mile by “proving” they’re pregnant in order to get a discount, is sexist. Not only that, but isn’t handling pee-soaked paperwork insensitive to the poor cashiers who have to process it? Contrary to popular belief, the ad is not a coupon; you don’t need to bring it into the store with you to receive the discount. In fact, it’s discouraged.

Adweek spoke to creative chief Magnus Jakobsson from the Åkestam Holst agency, who says the ad serves as an enticement for pregnant readers to joint the IKEA Family and reap the benefits.

We have worked on the ad for almost a year, believe it or not, and our client, IKEA Sweden, has been really supportive during this process. Publishing an ad that is a pregnancy test, and reminding consumers about the fact that you can get a better price with the IKEA Family discount in a creative and unusual way, isn’t really that controversial, when you think about it.

He says the reaction to the ad has been mostly positive in Sweden and all of Europe. And that it fits nicely into IKEA’s “Where Life Happens” brand.

“Where life happens” is all about life’s everyday situations, and being pregnant is definitely one of those. We try to make every single under the concept of ‘Where life happens’ as relevant and creative as possible in every type of media, and this time we got the chance to explore print. Could it be more than just an ordinary ad for a baby crib stating a price? Could it prosper outside the boundaries of a magazine and go viral? Yes, it most certainly could.

By the way, the crib discount is pretty significant: $500.

Everything You Need To Know About Marijuana And Sleep

Although sleep is essential for our health, its biological purpose is not fully understood. Oddly, the seemingly inactive state of sleep is actually a dynamic and critical process that helps us store memories, build immunity, repair tissue, regulate metabolism and blood pressure, control appetite and blood sugar, and process learning, along with a myriad of other physiological processes – all of which are regulated by the endocannabinoid system (ECS). Here is everything you need to know about marijuana and sleep.

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke at the National Institute of Health (NIH), new findings suggest “sleep plays a housekeeping role that removes toxins in your brain that build up while you are awake.”

Poor sleep is the number one reported medical complaint in the Unites States and a serious public health concern. The average adult needs between seven and eight hours of sleep per day. Yet, 10-30 million Americans regularly don’t get enough sleep.

Over 60 percent of American adults report having problems sleeping several nights per week. Over 40 million Americans suffer from more than 70 different sleep disorders. The most common sleep-related ailments include:

  • Insomnia – when one cannot fall asleep or stay asleep.
  • Sleep apnea – which involves impaired breathing while sleeping.
  • Restless leg syndrome – characterized by tingling, discomfort and even pain in the legs that increases at night and is relieved by movement.
  • Circadian rhythm disorders – when one’s internal clock is off and one’s sleep patterns are disturbed.
  • Parasomnias – which entails abnormal movements and activities while sleeping, including sleep walking and nightmares.
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness – when an individual experiences persistent drowsiness during daylight hours from narcolepsy or another medical condition.

Poor sleep is a risk factor for serious illness. Compared to people who get enough sleep, adults who are short-sleepers (less than 7 hours per 24-hour period) are more likely to experience one or more of 10 chronic health conditions, including obesity, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, stroke and depression.

Those with chronic illnesses are at greater risk for insomnia, which exacerbates their discomfort. Comorbid medical disorders – including conditions that cause hypoxemia (abnormally low blood oxygen levels) and dyspnea (difficult or labored breathing), gastroesophageal reflux disease, pain, and neurodegenerative diseases – have a 75-95 percent increased risk of insomnia.

Pills That Kill

In 2016, according to the industry research firm MarketsandMarkets, Americans spent $3.38 billion on prescription sedatives and hypnotics, over-the-counter (OTC) sleep drugs, and herbal sleep aids. It’s projected that the market for such products will experience about a 4.5 percent growth rate between now and 2021.

The quest for good night’s sleep can be hazardous to one’s health. Daniel F. Kripke, MD, sleep expert and co-founder of Research at Scripps Clinic Vitebri Family Sleep Center, discusses the dangers of sleep aids in his paper “Hypnotic drug risks of mortality, infection, depression, and cancer: but lack of benefit.”

Dr. Kripke reviewed 40 studies conducted on prescription sleeping pills, which include hypnotic drugs such as zolpidem (Ambien, Edlmar, Intermezzo and Zolpimist), temazepam (Restoril), eszopiclone (Lunesta), zaleplon (Sonata), triazolam (Halcion), flurazepam (Dalmane and Dalmadorm), quazepam, and other barbiturates used for sleep. Of these 40 studies, thirty-nine found that consumption of hypnotics is “associated with excess mortality” to the tune of a 4.6 times greater risk of death for hypnotic users.

Grim statistics: 10,000 deaths per year are directly caused by and attributed to hypnotic drugs, based on medical examiner data. However, large epidemiological studies suggest the number of fatalities may actually be closer to 300,000-500,000 per year. The difference can be attributed to underreported use of hypnotics at the time of death and the fact that prescription hypnotics are rarely listed as the cause of death.

Dr. Kripke concludes that even limited use of sleeping pills causes “next day functional impairment,” increases risk of “on-the-road driver-at-fault crashes,” increases falls and accidental injuries especially among seniors, is associated with “2.1 times” as many new depression incidents compared to randomized placebo recipients, and increases the risk of suicide. Furthermore, the use of opioids combined with hypnotics – two known dose-dependent respiratory suppressants – can be extremely dangerous, especially when mixed with alcohol and other drugs.

Here’s How To Get Meghan Markle’s ‘Audrey Brows’

As Meghan Markle gets ready to walk down the aisle, she’s paying special attention to her appearance. And one feature she’s pampering in particular are her brows. And from one style icon to another, Markle is addicted to a brow treatment named after Audrey Hepburn, who was famous for her eyebrows.

Where else would Markle go to get her brows tended to other than a salon that has an Audrey Brow’ treatment?

Her personal brow stylist, Sherrille Riley, tells PEOPLE, that the procedure is “particularly flattering on Meghan because it’s a really natural style and it really compliments her features — she’s a beautiful woman.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bc6yO7sH_Kt

Riley operates the Nails and Brow salon in London’s Mayfair and has been tending to Markle’s brows since the summer of 2016. She says Markle came to the salon on recommendation from another member of the Royal Family.

According to PEOPLE, the $65 Audrey Brow treatment involves maintenance, tinting, threading and a bit of tweezing. Riley, who also maintains the brows of Princess Beatrice, says the first step to getting Markle’s brows is to grow them out before shaping the brows as straight as possible “making sure that the tail ends are lifted upwards. Fill in any gaps with a brow pencil.”

As if we could love Markle any more, Riley says the future bride is as nice as she appears to be, saying, “Meghan is very relaxed and it’s just like talking to any other person, which is refreshing. She is very real and very natural and very, very smart. She’s confidant but in a soft, friendly way and very matter-of-fact. She has a real presence about her.”

Gym Chain Bans Cable News Because It Conflicts With ‘Healthy Way Of Life’

No more fake news. That’s what national health club chain Life Time Fitness is saying after the decision to remove cable news from its 128 locations.

Life Time’s explanation? The “consistently negative or politically charged content” doesn’t align with the company’s “healthy way of life philosophy.” That means no CNN, Fox News Channel, MSNBC and CNBC while Life Time members sweat it out. However, USA, A&E, Discovery, HGTV, the local over-the-air stations, and ESPN will remain available to interested gym members.

“The decision to remove the national cable network news stations resulted from significant member feedback received over time and our commitment to provide family oriented environments free of consistently negative or politically charged content,” Life Time said in a statement posted to Twitter.

“It always is our goal to meet the majority of members’ expressed requests and we believe this change is consistent with the desires of overall membership as well as our healthy way of life philosophy.”

https://twitter.com/lifetimefitness/status/949044437711310849

According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, customer reactions seems to be mixed. Some are in favor of the ban, believing the gym gives them a valuable space to detox from the oversaturated and fraught media climate. Others, however, are frustrated as they scheduled their workouts around certain news programs to motivate them through their sessions. (I guess Wolf Blitzer really gets the people going?)

Life Time Fitness spokeswoman Natalie Bushaw told the Tribune, “clubs do have flexibility to air programs of interest in their club, such as local sporting events from college to pro teams.”
