Munich Burns 1200 Pounds Of Weed To Provide Heat For Local Homes

0

Munich customs settled on a decision cannabis enthusiasts would have chosen after happening upon an inordinately large amount of quality marijuana last year—they burned it.

That’s right. Munich authorities burned 550 kilograms of loose marijuana in a waste incineration plant this week. According to The Local, 550 kilograms is enough cannabis for about 3.8 million joints.

“For us it’s just garbage that needs to be destroyed,” customs spokesman Christian Schüttenkopf told Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ).

The drugs were discovered a year ago when a truck was crossing the border from Serbia. Unsurprisingly the driver remains in custody, but authorities had to wait for the cannabis to dry in their laboratories, so they could measure its weight properly. The marijuana had remained in their labs since June, and was burned, in part, because it was taking up too much room.

In addition, customs officials were unaware of the origins of the marijuana so they could not authorize its usage for medicinal purposes. To be used for medical purposes, “almost every stem must be registered,” said Schüttenkopf.

So instead they burned it to help provide heat and electricity to locals within the region. The bags were thrown in degrees between 900 and 1000 degrees Celsius, destroying any and all organic compounds. In short, residents did not smell any marijuana odor nor did they receive a contact high.

“The material is used to generate district heating and electricity for the people of the region,” said the plant manager. “It’s a benefit for the general public, so to speak.”

Gossip: Meghan Markle Is Being Fast Tracked Because The Queen Is Old; Why Angelina Jolie Homeschools

With Meghan Markle set to take part in the Christmas festivities at Queen Elizabeth’s Sandringham home on December 25, insiders detect a softening of the monarch and the royal ways. At 91, the Queen has mellowed and is more realistic about the modern world, insiders and veteran royal watchers tell PEOPLE in this week’s issue. Which is why Meghan will break protocol to join her fiancé Prince Harry at the church service with the rest of the royal family on Christmas morning.

“It’s her age,” says Ingrid Seward, author of My Husband & I, a new biography of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. “She is easier-going. It’s refreshing that [the royal family] is prepared to bend a bit.”

And a friend of the family adds, “They are much more enlightened now.”

Back when Kate Middleton was engaged to Prince William in 2010, she did not join him for Christmas at Sandringham.

“Ms. Markle,” as the palace calls her, and Harry will stay at Anmer Hall, the 10-bedroom country home of William and Kate and their children Prince George and Princess Charlotte. After church, she will head to the “big house” (as it’s known in royal circles) for lunch with the Queen and the rest of the family.

Why Angelina Jolie Homeschools

More than one year after filing for divorce from Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and her six children are moving on with their lives. “Angelina is busy with everything she is doing, including being a super mom to her kids,” a Jolie source tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue. “But she is doing fine and working with Brad on ways to continue their lives so everyone is happy.”

Jolie and Pitt’s divorce is not yet finalized, but it is moving forward. In the meantime, the pair have been “working out time for him to be with the kids, which he treasures,” says another source. For Pitt “the process has been difficult,” says a source close to the situation. “But he is OK and remains committed to his family.” (While Pitt has dated since their split — “nothing serious,” says a source — there’s been no hint yet of a new romance on Jolie’s part.)

Maddox, 16, Pax, 14, Zahara, 12, Shiloh, 11, and twins Vivienne and Knox, 9, live with Jolie, 42, in LA and visit Pitt, 54. Earlier this year, Jolie bought a $24 million estate once owned by Cecil B. DeMille to be closer to Pitt. During the week, the kids “are focused on studying,” a family source says. “They have tutors for all kinds of subjects, including different languages and instruments. The kids are also very physically active. They like soccer and love skateboarding, and also take self-defense classes.”

At a December screening of her Golden Globe-nominated movie First They Killed My Father, Jolie explained her decision to homeschool her kids.

“It bothered me how little I was taught in school,” Jolie, 42, explained. “I do worry about my children’s education. I homeschool partially because they are from around the world and it’s very … I didn’t want them to have the same education I had when it came to Vietnam or Cambodia.”

Cash Rich: Nevada Marijuana Sales Soar To $37.9 Million

Recreational marijuana retail is only four months old in Nevada, but the state and its residents are already reaping the benefits of legal, regulated sales. According to the state’s Department of Taxation, October sales were just shy of $38 million — the best month of the young program.

The state collected $5.8 million in tax revenue on the $37.9 million of legal recreational and medical cannabis sales for the month. Governor Brian Sandoval estimated that Nevada would collect an average of $5 million per month from July 2017 to July 2019 from marijuana taxes. The state is already $800,000 above target in only its fourth month.

“We are pretty on target with projections, maybe a little over,” said Department of Taxation spokeswoman Stephanie Klapstein. Since July 1, Nevada has generated more than $19 million in tax revenue from the cannabis sales.

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal:

October’s sales marked a sizable jump from the roughly $27.7 million spent on recreational marijuana at Nevada dispensaries in September. Recreational sales in August weren’t too far behind October — when Henderson began retail sales — at $33.4 million.

More than $12.6 million comes from the retail tax on recreational weed. That’s 20 percent of the $63.5 million tax revenue projection budgeted for the first two years of recreational sales.

The state’s recreational marijuana program got off to a bumpy start in July as supply could not keep up with demand and some confusion over the regulations. But the state certainly has rebounded from its rough summer.

The taxes collected from cannabis goes to the state’s rainy day fund, which can be spent anywhere, but is normally reserved for emergencies.

The state is currently weighing the possibility of casinos working with the cannabis industry. If this happens, watch these numbers skyrocket.

Is Medical Marijuana An Autism Wonder Drug?

Autism is a developmental disorder that leaves subjects mentality and physically debilitated for life. While symptoms of autism arise in different levels of severity on a case-by-case basis, all autism patients suffer from learning and speech disabilities. These learning and speech incapacities are further manifested in more specified impairments such as social awkwardness, lessened motor skills, and overtly extreme fixations. While scientists are still unable to pinpoint the exact cause of autism, most are in agreement that the disorder has some genetic, hereditary ties. Currently, there is no known cure for autism and doctors are still in need of a suitable aid for severe autistic symptoms/outbursts.

Autistic Outbursts And Pharmaceuticals

How autism presents itself in patients differs considerably in each instance, with the most drastic cases gaining attention of the medical marijuana community. Patients whom suffer the most are those with “severe autism”—this level of the disease is accentuated by radical, forceful “autistic outbursts.” Severe autistic outbursts can be so intense as to completely inhibit the social and professional activities of an autistic child’s family. As a result, for parents with children that suffer from severe autism, finding a suitable medicine to curb these outbursts is essential. The approaches of mainstream, western medicine to treating autism include some anti-psychotic pharmaceuticals as well as the use of “Ritalin, Focalin, and Rispederal.” All of these medications are wrought with debilitating side effects. In the most extreme cases, autistic patients have died from malnutrition as their prescription meds totally incapacitated their appetites.

Medical Cannabis Research And Autism

Israel is currently leading the global charge for legitimate medicinal research into the potential benefits of medical marijuana—including that of autism. In fact, Israel has over 110 state sanctioned medical marijuana tests underway throughout the country, making them the number one nation in cannabis research in the world. To bring it back to autism, the Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem is presently conducting an intensive medical cannabis study on 120 autism patients ranging in age from 5 yrs. to 29 yrs. old. The Israel studies are using CBDs, or cannabidiol, as the primary focus of their clinical trials in curbing autistic outbursts with cannabis. The results of these tests are positive for both patients and their families. For starters, one patient’s mother reports that her daughter has become “calmer and less irritable” since beginning the trials with CBDs. Furthermore, the studies have shown that “some patients no longer hurt themselves or throw tantrums. Some are more communicative. Others were able to return to classes after they had been suspended for behavioral problems.” Amazingly, and in one of the most extreme cases of the Israeli studies, a mother reported that her 12 year old autistic son is now “speaking relentlessly” due to cannabis use, after never uttering a word in his entire life.

The United States also shares in its fair share of miracle stories with cannabis and autism. To illustrate, a conservative, anti-drug mother in California gave her severely autistic 10 yr. old son cannabis brownies as a “last ditch” effort to curb his outbursts—as pharmaceuticals destroyed his appetite and caused him to wither away to 46 pounds. The results were almost immediate. Within days, the boy was playing patiently in his room and again eating healthy portions at dinner. In summary, while it is always important to analyze new medical movements with a critical eye, cannabis treatment for autism presents some powerful evidence for a new, natural “wonder drug.”

Bill Nye Will Explore The Science Behind Marijuana On Netflix Show

Bill Nye may not smoke marijuana, but he remains supportive of it. And in the newest season of the Science Guy’s Netflix series “Bill Nye Saves The World,” he will dedicate an the first episode explore the history of hemp as well as the pros and cons of marijuana.

Though Nye proclaims he isn’t a fan of marijuana’s smell, he’ll even travel to a dispensary. However, we won’t see Bill Nye the High Guy, as his visit is all done in the name of science.

“Here’s the takeaway….nobody’s really sure how it works, marijuana. Nobody’s exactly sure what it does,” Nye said in an interview with CNET. “So there’s a very strong argument that keeping it as a Schedule I Drug is not based on any science.

“Schedule I means it’s presumed to be addicting and it’s presumed to have no medical value.  But people use marijuana and marijuana extracts for all sorts of medical applications. So you gotta think there’s something to it.”

The second season of Bill Nye Saves The World will air Dec. 29. It will also explore the science behind time travel and cybersecurity, though we’ll be particularly interested in the marijuana-themed season opener.

“The upshot of the show is that nobody’s sure how it works so we got to study marijuana more and really discover what the active ingredients are.”

This Colorado Podcaster Will Pay You To Study Marijuana

The host of the most popular cannabis business podcast in the world wants to financially assist interested students in studying the world of marijuana. This week Matthew Kind, the entrepreneur behind the podcast “CannaInsider,” announced he was establishing a new podcast to help traditional university students pivot toward cannabis education programs.

Called the CannaInsider Cannabis Education Scholarship, Kind is targeting “educational industrial complex” with the inaugural scholarship. According to a press release, it will be awarded to the student or students who “best demonstrates the passion, curiosity and commitment for cannabis necessary for success in this historic, blossoming industry.”

This transformative industry is attracting more and more people who not only are enthusiastic about cannabis, but who have the skills necessary to move the industry in the right direction,” Kind said. “But the need for talented leaders in the fastest-growing industry in America is outpacing the cultivation of people with the skills and drive to flourish […] We hope to quicken the pace of career development, and to shepherd people into this booming industry at a faster rate.”

Those awarded will receive $3,000 during the first quarter of 2018. Though in comparison to traditional university rates that might not sound like much, the scholarship will go a long way within the cannabis community. For example, at Oaksterdam University in California, a full semester costs $1,295. That cost includes 14 weeks of training in cannabis fields related to business, economics, law, history, and science.

Applicants must show they are enrolled in a traditional two-year or four-year institution. Recipients do not need to drop out, though they must enroll in a self-selected cannabis education program and finish their course work by June 15, 2018. To apply, you must subit a 500-word essay that details your passion for cannabis, including why you are seeking a cannabis education.

You can find the application on the CannaInsider website or by clicking here.

What Are Your Rights If An Airline Screws You Over?

The holidays are made for travel mayhem. The number of people mobilizing, the tight schedules, and the fact that airlines are always on the edge of complete breakdowns make December the perfect time for shit to hit the fan.

Still, it’s important to remember that in the midst of all this chaos you still have rights, no matter how much the airline is struggling and how bad you feel for the poor people working over the counter. They’re all dreading the holiday season just as much as you are.

Wired has built a neat little guide that’ll help you maintain your sanity when it comes to traveling, helping you tackle your journey as best as you can:

When You Get To The Airport

https://giphy.com/gifs/girlshbo-l4hLUTv6EwTN9tKsU

To kick things off it’s best to get to know your enemy and prepare for delays and all the possible terrible things. Each airport is different when it comes to the comfort they provide and when it comes to how prone they are to delays.

Be prepared to wait but also be sure to get to the airport ahead of time. Anything can happen during the holidays, delays due to weather, or because there’s a lot of people, so it really pays to get there early. If your delay is particularly awful, you can talk to your airline and discuss the possibility of getting a flight on another airline. It’s a long shot, but you’ve got nothing to lose.

When The Airline Is Overbooked

https://giphy.com/gifs/season-6-the-simpsons-6×24-3orieKO0zvzy7XxTTa

When the airline inevitably starts asking if there are any volunteers who want to stay behind for a nice prize, you can decide to take the opportunity or to sit and wait. If you get bumped out of the flight regardless of your decision, you have the right to ask for a written notice that explains your rights and maybe even for a compensation check.

When On The Plane

https://giphy.com/gifs/CUHh3R6Mt45SE

If it’s been two hours, you’re still on the plane and it hasn’t taken off, the airline is legally required to provide food, water and access to the bathroom to their passengers. If they airplane hasn’t taken off in three hours, you have the right to leave the plane.

When You Arrive At Your Destination

https://giphy.com/gifs/lego-happy-win-l378BQ2fq6jFJBUEE

Surprise! Your bag hasn’t made it to your destination! Classic holiday tradition. You’re entitled to compensation for your wait time, like enough money to buy some underwear and a toothbrush. You can also use social media to complain because that always gets the airlines’ attention.

Apple Is Buying Shazam And iTunes May Be On Its Way Out

0

Spotify and other streaming services have changed the music industry. While most of us think that streaming music is the way to go, some musicians believe that this model of consuming music does a disservice to their work.

Last week, after much speculation, Apple confirmed their acquisition of Shazam, an app that allows the user to know which song is playing on the TV or on the radio. Shazam samples the audio that surrounds you and, if its clear enough, tells you the name of the song.

While Apple hasn’t confirmed or denied anything because they’re being their usual secretive selves, many experts believe that the acquisition of Shazam coincides with the company’s need to shift their music model, opting for a service that’s streaming only.

According to The Huffington Post, music streaming services have grown incredibly fast over the past few years, outpacing streaming giants such as Netflix, while music downloads have only decreased since 2012.

According to the BBC, acquiring Shazam could give Apple the necessary edge that they need to fight Spotify, offering their users and subscribers specific recommendations of songs due to their large database of information. We’ll know of Apple’s plans by early 2019, which is when they plan to unveil their new music model. In the meantime, patience!

Marijuana Product Review: The Hmbltd Dose Pen Is Perfect

One night while at a bar, a savvy and connected friend literally herded me outside “just for a second” to try this Apple Pencil looking object that she claimed was a vape pen, and knew I would adore. I gently pulled on the palm-sized tube and within just a few seconds it vibrated to let me know when to cut it. The Hmbldt Dose Pen is easily the coolest weed product I’d tried since the very first G Pen, which was quite some time ago.

The device itself is designed with a dreamy and comforting sleek body that delivers everything you want with no excess. This method of consumption is not only measured and informative to even a first time user, it’s revolutionary for those that use specific cannabis protocol in their medical care. It’s roughly the size of a Bic lighter, and unlike that ubiquitous smoking accoutrement, it’s recyclable.

One major divergence from the rest of the disposable cartridges out there are its formulas, which are an engineered blend of cannabinoids and terpenes made to have certain effects, rather than representing any given strain. Six formulas address the run from sleep to sex issues. Having tried four of the six, the concept is absolutely incredible to me. I loved pretty much every single thing about the Dose Pen from its appearance to the formulas flavor profile.

The Calm Dose Pen is significantly higher in CBD than the other formulas, and is a godsend for the non-neurotypical. While people are quick to avoid cannabis for a litany of reasons not limited to bad experiences, I think this pen alone addresses most of the issues that people seem to have with the stuff. It also has a slightly more grassy note to it, which is not unpleasant at all and is similar to traditional vape flavors. The rest of the flavor is rounded out by lemon heavy limonene, myrcene, and pinene, when paired together fight anxiety, improve brain focus, and get you to your goals with as little THC as possible.

Spicy-floral and incredible for aches and pains, the Relief Dose Pen is the next-highest in CBD of the pens I tried. It’s rich in terpinolene, a piney terpene, and B-caryophyllene, the essence of cannabis and clove, which give the Relief pen its heady flavor like gardenias and sunshine. Anyone having a medical procedure should consider grabbing one of these to supplement what the doctor prescribes, anti inflammatory protocol doesn’t stop with pills!

Bliss Dose Pen is a morning joy. It’s balanced in the anti-anxiety and focus promoting terpenes as well as the body loving ones for pain management. It’s slightly higher in THC than the other formulas I tried, which is great considering the doses are small. Someone who is used to smoking actual herb or stronger 1000mg concentrate pens will appreciate the bump of THC in this formula.

Arouse is unique in flavor when compared to most concentrates, and especially side by side with the other Hmbldt formulas. The Arouse Dose Pen works with clovey caryophyllene and heady farnesene, but instead of delving into too many fruity terps, it’s got the hoppy/sage like aroma of humulene, giving it an earthy punch that really makes for an exciting pull.

Overall, these pens are fabulous for their evolved design and formulation and their commitment to recyclability. They have a serious novelty factor that is undeniable, it’s an exciting product to use and even more exciting when you can genuinely feel it working. The only con would be the amount of product per pen, which tops out at 400mg of THC in the larger Dose Pen, as many disposable cartridges have at least 500mg if not 1000. For people looking for precision and reliability over psychoactivity, I don’t think the THC amount per pen will be an issue at all.
