Scientists Are Now Able To Control Our Unwanted Thoughts

0

Unwanted, persistent, and intrusive thoughts are crippling when it comes to anxiety, OCD, PTSD, depression and a many other mental illnesses. Anything we encounter in our day-to-day lives can trigger an unwanted thought, and we usually have no control over them.

The prefrontal cortex has always been known for playing a significant role when it comes to controlling our actions and thoughts. Science Daily reports that Scientists Taylor Schmitz and Michael Anderson wanted to take this knowledge further, and finally figure out what part of the prefrontal cortex was responsible for inhibiting our thought process.

By conducting the “Think/No Think” procedure they set out to map the thought process of different volunteers. The task consisted of pairing unconnected words with each other and later asking the participants to either think of the paired word or not.

With the help of fMRIs and other brain imaging technologies, the scientists were able to see what was going on within the participant’s’ brain, which displayed a lot of activity from the neurotransmitter GABA. Scientists concluded that GABA concentrations within the hippocampus helped predict people’s ability to block out certain thoughts and memories. This elevated activity is present in people with schizophrenia, PTSD, anxiety, and chronic depression, meaning that these results could provide much needed information and options when it comes to the treatment of different mental illnesses.

Best Comfort Food: Cannabis Mac & Cheese Bake

I think I perfected the mac and cheese box hacking in my super-broke days right after college. You can only eat the bluebox so many times before you actually do get the blue box blues, and it’s boring as hell to eat anything straight-out-of-the-box. Throwing in mix-ins to a box or two of the store stuff and baking it for a few minutes with breadcrumbs makes everyone at the table get more nutrients while also satiating junk food cravings that usually lead us to reach for boxed mac anyway.

Though this is super easy, it goes deeper than adding just any old vegetable. You have to up the cheese and seasoning if you want it to still taste like mac and cheese, not just seasoned pasta.

If you want it to be a repeat hit in the house, tweaking to the point of cannabis casserole perfection is not hard at all. Break out all of those combos you have been dreaming about, because with the box as a stepping stone, you’re just a hunk of cheese and some frozen spinach away from an acceptable and marginally well rounded dinner.

Danielle Guercio, 2017
Serves 5, 9mg THC per serving estimated

  • 2 Boxes mac and cheese
  • 6 Tbs plain unsalted butter
  • 2 Tbs cannabis infused butter*
  • 1 bag frozen broccoli
  • ¼ lb shredded gouda cheese
  • ¼ cup half and half
  • 5 cloves minced garlic
  • ¼ cup water
  • Pepper to taste
  • ¼ c breadcrumbs
  • ¼ c fried onions
  • 1 Tbs olive oil
Photos by Danielle Guercio

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a large oven and microwave safe casserole dish. Boil a large pot of water and add some salt. Cook boxed pasta for 7 minutes until al dente.

Defrost frozen broccoli by either adding to the boiling water, roasting with the garlic, or microwaving. Strain pasta and/or vegetables and add to casserole dish.

Photos by Danielle Guercio

Using the hot pot you cooked the pasta in over low heat, melt the plain butter and add the manufacturers cheese pouches, along with the half and half and water. Add half of the additional cheese and stir until melted. Add cannabutter and some pepper and mix until smooth.

Bake the whole thing for 20 minutes at 350 degrees to heat through and toast up the top. Allow to stand for 5 minutes before serving if you want it to have some shape, then serve! You can also dig right in if presentation doesn’t matter. Try not to eat the whole thing because it makes fabulous leftovers.

*Cannabutter

Decarboxylate 3.5g of finely ground cannabis at 225 degrees for 20 minutes in a tightly sealed, oven safe container. Put cannabis in lidded mason jar or vacuum sealed bag with cannabis and one stick of butter. Heat in water bath just under boiling for at least 1 hour. Strain and chill to use in recipes.

Make this mac your emergency dinner fallback, because it comes together from, mainly pantry and freezer items in as little as 30 minutes. Keeping butter and milk on hand helps to make nights like this run even smoother, and if you medicate your meals, same goes.

You’ll Soon Be Able To Invest In A US-Based Marijuana ETF

Investors looking to cash in on the green rush have a new opportunity in the United States: a marijuana ETF that will begin trading next month.

According to ETF Daily News, a site dedicated to information on Exchange Traded Funds:

The Marijuana ETF is still about a month and a half away, but here’s what we know about it so far. It will track the Alternative Agroscience Index, an index that invests in companies that are primarily engaged in the legal cultivation, production and distribution of cannabis, pharmaceutical companies that manufacture or market cannabinoid-related drugs and businesses that make fertilizers and pesticides used in the cultivation of cannabis. The fund will only include companies that operate in states where marijuana is legal.

The ETFMG Alternative Agroscience ETF will be the first U.S. traded fund dedicated to investing in marijuana cultivators and distributors.

What Is An ETF?

For those not familiar with ETFs, think of it as an index fund. Here is how NASDAQ defines ETFs:

Exchange Traded Funds are funds that track indexes like the NASDAQ-100 Index, S&P 500, Dow Jones, etc. When you buy shares of an ETF, you are buying shares of a portfolio that tracks the yield and return of its native index. The main difference between ETFs and other types of index funds is that ETFs don’t try to outperform their corresponding index, but simply replicate its performance. They don’t try to beat the market, they try to be the market. ETFs have been around since the early 1980s, but they’ve come into their own within the past 10 years.

According to the SEC filing:

A Cannabis Company is considered to be primarily engaged in a described line of business if it derives more than 50% of its revenue from such activity. The Cannabis Companies would be expected to possess all necessary permits and licenses to legally grow cannabis.

Although new to the United States, this is not the first marijuana ETF in the world. In April, the Toronto Stock Exchange began trading a cannabis ETF: The Horizons Medical Marijuana Life Sciences (HMMJ) fund, which now has more than $200 million in assets under management.

Gossip: Kris Jenner Wants Her Family To Travel to Space; Victoria Beckham Not Involved In Spice Girls Reunion

Money is no object for the Kardashians, so that’s probably why rumors are swirling that the family is dying to do something extravagant and over-the-top for their next adventure. According to a new report, Kris Jenner is looking to achieve only a what a handful of people have done: going into space.

Not only does the momager reportedly want seats for her famous family on the next space shuttle, but sources say she wants to film an episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians up in orbit as well! Does this mean the Kardashians are becoming kosmonauts?

Victoria Beckham Not Involved In Spice Girls Reunion

Yesterday, the internet lit up after the Sun reported that all five of the Spice Girls had agreed to reunite for a TV special and compilation album in 2018.

But a new conflicting report appears to suggest otherwise.

Per TMZ:

“We’re told Victoria and her camp have not been part of the talks, and no one’s reached out to them to join negotiations. It’s no skin off Posh’s back, because our sources say she’s busy working on her fashion line.”

This is a total bummer, to be perfectly honest.

Think Posh will have a change of heart?

What You Need to Know About Texas And Medical Marijuana

With Texas mere weeks away from medical marijuana, there are a few things to know about the new program, starting with its one qualifying condition: intractable epilepsy. No other conditions are allowed for now, though theoretically legislation could be passed later. Texans are just grateful that people suffering will soon find relief.

For its restrictions, it’s still a progressive law in that patients of any age will have access to the high-CBD, low-THC plant extract. The high levels of CBD are especially effective at treating seizure disorder, so this will be a blessing to the 150,000+ patients who are eligible.

It will also be a relief. It’s been two years since cannabis was legalized for epilepsy patients and now Texas has licensed Knox Medical, originally out of Florida, to dispense the cannabis medicine.

Bruce Knox is the company’s COO and started the company from his late parents’ nursery business and by teaming up with Cansortium Holdings. According to Dallas Fort Worth CBS Local, Knox recalled, “I was fortunate enough to go ask my dad about two weeks before he passed what he thought about this. He said that I never thought that it should be illegal.”

They also asked Knox CEO and founder Jose Hidalgo why he wanted to expand from Florida to Texas. He answered that he saw cannabis as the future of medicine and that there are millions and millions of people who could potentially benefit from it.

He also said that Texas and Florida are similar in some ways, especially with their conservative politics. Plus, when they legalized medical cannabis, both states went the non-smoking route and the low-THC route.

Like Texas, Florida started with very limited conditions as well: seizure disorder and cancer. Now they allow doctors to recommend the plant for around a dozen ailments. Texas could eventually go down the same road, but for now, at least a good 150K people who really need access to cannabis will have it.

The plants are growing and patients are readying themselves for the program’s official launch. Doctor prescriptions can’t start until sales do, but sales should be at the ready in December.

7 Ways CBD-Rich Cannabis Can Help Prevent Disease

Cannabinoid therapy is connected to the part of the biological matrix where body and brain meet. Since CBD and other compounds in cannabis are so similar to the chemicals created by our own bodies, they are integrated better than many synthetic drugs. According to Bradley E. Alger, a leading scientist in the study of endocannabinoids with a Ph.D. from Harvard in experimental psychology, “With complex actions in our immune system, nervous system, and virtually all of the body’s organs, the endocannabinoids are literally a bridge between body and mind. By understanding this system, we begin to see a mechanism that could connect brain activity and states of physical health and disease.”

Reduced Risk Of Diabetes And Obesity

Several studies have shown that regular cannabis users have a lower body mass index, smaller waist circumferences, and reduced risk of diabetes and obesity. One 2011 report published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, based on a survey of more than fifty-two thousand participants, concluded that rates of obesity are about one-third lower among cannabis users. This is despite the findings that participants tend to consume more calories per day, an activity that is potentially related to THC’s stimulation of ghrelin, a hormone that increases appetite but also increases the metabolism of carbohydrates. CBD on its own was shown in 2006 to lower the incidence of diabetes in lab rats, and in 2015 an Israeli-American biopharmaceutical collective began stage 2 trials related to using CBD to treat diabetes. Research has demonstrated that CBD helps the body convert white fat into weight-reducing brown fat, promoting normal insulin production and sugar metabolism.

In studying over 4,600 test subjects, researchers found that current cannabis users had fasting insulin levels that were up to 16 percent lower than their non-using counterparts, higher levels of HDL cholesterol that protects against diabetes, and 17 percent lower levels of insulin resistance. Respondents who had used cannabis in their lifetime but were not current users showed similar but less pronounced associations, indicating that the protective effect of cannabis fades with time.

Excess insulin promotes the conversion of sugars into stored fat and leads to weight gain and obesity. The research emerging about the interplay between cannabinoids and insulin regulation may lead to some major breakthroughs in the prevention of obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Better Cholesterol Profiles And Lowered Risk Of Cardiovascular Disease

A 2013 study that measured data from 4,652 participants on the effect of cannabis on metabolic systems compared non-users to current and former users. It found that current users had higher blood levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C) or “good cholesterol.” The same year, an analysis of over seven hundred members of Canada’s Inuit community found that, on average, regular cannabis users had increased levels of HDL-C and slightly lower levels of LDL-C (“bad cholesterol”).

Linked to diet and lifestyle, atherosclerosis is common in developed Western nations and can lead to heart disease or stroke. It is a chronic inflammatory disorder involving the progressive depositing of atherosclerotic plaques (immune cells carrying oxidized LDL or low-density lipoproteins). A growing body of evidence suggests that endocannabinoid signaling plays a critical role in the pathology of atherogenesis. The condition is now understood to be a physical response to injuries in the arterial walls’ lining, caused by high blood pressure, infectious microbes, or excessive presence of an amino acid called homocysteine. Studies have demonstrated that inflammatory molecules stimulate the cycle leading to atherosclerotic lesions. Existing treatments are moderately effective though carry numerous side effects. CB2 receptors triple in response to inflammation, allowing anandamide and 2-AG, the body’s natural cannabinoids, to decrease inflammatory responses. The CB2 receptor is also stimulated by plant-based cannabinoids.

A 2005 animal trial showed that low-dose oral cannabinoids slowed the progression of atherosclerosis. Researchers the following year wrote that the immunomodulatory capacity of cannabinoids was “well established” in science and suggested they had a broad therapeutic potential for a variety of conditions, including atherosclerosis.

A 2007 animal study with CBD showed it had a cardioprotective effect during heart attacks, and more details were published that year about the involvement of the CB1 and CB2 receptors in cardiovascular illness and health.

Reduced Risk Of Cancer

Could cannabidiol help prevent tumors and other cancers before they grow? A 2012 study showed that animals treated with CBD were significantly less likely to develop colon cancer after being induced with carcinogens in a laboratory. Several studies had already shown that THC prevents tumors and reduces them, including one in 1996 on animal models that found that it decreased the incidence of both benign and hepatic adenoma tumors. In 2015, scientists analyzed the medical records of over eighty-four thousand male patients in California and found that those who used cannabis, but not tobacco, had a rate of bladder cancer that was 45 percent below the norm. Topical products can be used to treat and prevent skin cancers. Continuing research is focused on the best ratio of CBD to THC and the most effective dose level in cancer prevention and treatment.

Cannabinoids And Brain Health

Cannabinoids are neuroprotective, meaning that they help maintain and regulate brain health. The effects appear to be related to several actions they have on the brain, including the removal of damaged cells and the improved efficiency of mitochondria. CBD and other antioxidant compounds in cannabis also work to reduce glutamate toxicity. Extra glutamate, which stimulates nerve cells in the brain to fire, causes cells to become over-stimulated, ultimately leading to cell damage or death. Thus, cannabinoids help protect brain cells from damage, keeping the organ healthy and functioning properly. CBD has also been shown to have an anti-inflammatory effect on the brain.

As the brain ages, the creation of new neurons slows down significantly. In order to maintain brain health and prevent degenerative diseases, new cells need to be continuously created. A 2008 study showed that low doses of CBD– and THC-like cannabinoids encouraged the creation of new nerve cells in animal models, even in aging brains. CBD also helps prevent other nerve-related diseases like neuropathy and Alzheimer’s disease.

Protects Against Bone Disease And Broken Bones

Cannabinoids are facilitative of the process of bone metabolism—the cycle in which old bone material is replaced by new at a rate of about 10 percent per year, crucial to maintaining strong, healthy bones over time. CBD, in particular, has been shown to block an enzyme that destroys bone-building compounds in the body, reducing the risk of age-related bone diseases like osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. In both of those diseases, the body is no longer creating new bone and cartilage cells. CBD helps spur the process of new bone-cell formation, which is why it has been found to speed the healing of broken bones and, due to a stronger fracture callus, decrease the likelihood of re-fracturing the bone (bones are 35–50 percent stronger than those of non-treated subjects).

Protects And Heals The Skin

The skin has the highest amount and concentration of CB2 receptors in the body. When applied topically as an infused lotion, serum, oil, or salve, the antioxidants in CBD (a more powerful antioxidant than vitamins E and C) can repair damage from free radicals like UV rays and environmental pollutants. Cannabinoid receptors can be found in the skin and seem to be connected to the regulation of oil production in the sebaceous glands. Cannabis-based topical products are being developed to treat related issues from acne to psoriasis and can promote faster healing of damaged skin. In fact, historical documents show that cannabis preparations have been used for wound healing in both animals and people in a range of cultures spanning the globe and going back thousands of years. The use of concentrated cannabis oils to treat skin cancer is gaining popularity with a number of well-documented cases of people curing both melanoma and carcinoma-type skin cancers with the topical application of CBD and THC products. Cannabis applied topically is not psychoactive.

Anti-Inflammatory

Cannabinoids have been proven to have an anti-inflammatory effect in numerous studies. CBDengages with the endocannabinoid system in many organs throughout the body, helping to reduce inflammation systemically. The therapeutic potential is impressively wide-ranging, as inflammation is involved in a broad spectrum of diseases.

Researchers Get $3.2 Million To Study HIV And Marijuana

Researchers at the the University of Florida received a $3.2 million grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) to study people with HIV and AIDS and how cannabis affects their health and cognitive abilities.

With one of the highest rates of new HIV infections in the country, Florida is an ideal target for the study. The problem has reached such a crisis state that in 2016 the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) released an alarming forecast of rates of infection if the current trend in Florida continues. It predicted that 50 percent of black men who have sex with men and 25 percent of Latino men who have sex with men could eventually be infected.

Dr. Robert L Cook, a Univerity of Florida professor of epidemiology and the director of the Southern HIV and Alcohol Research Consortium, is painfully aware of the need to address this issue, He is curious about how people living with HIV are using cannabis and how it may be affecting them.

“We want to learn from people using marijuana about which specific patterns, modes of consumption, or types of marijuana they think are most beneficial for specific types of symptoms,” Dr. Cook said. “We also want to see whether different patterns of use, or presence of CBD, is associated with decreases in systemic inflammation as measured by blood tests and biomarkers of inflammation. We also want to see what happens when people change, from using whatever they can get in their community to a prescription product that they make take on a more prescribed basis.”

People living with HIV are often prescribed antiretroviral drugs to fight the infection. The drugs can take a great toll with side effects such as pain, lack of appetite and sleep problems. Patients report that it helps with appetite, nausea, sleep and pain. Previous research has shown that patients who use cannabis were over three times more likely to continue taking their prescription meds. This supports the reasoning of Florida and other states that list HIV and AIDS as qualifying conditions for state-licensed medical marijuana.

The University of Florida study will follow 400 patients who are already receiving medical care from specialists. As Dr. Cook pointed out to us, this research does not take place in a lab environment.

“Our current study will recruit primarily from HIV care settings. It is observational so we will only be asking people what they do, asking if they are acquiring from a dispensary (or not), and doing a urine test to see if they have different cannabinoids,” Dr. Cook said. “We are not dispensing any marijuana. Now that a much broader range of marijuana is available in Florida and HIV is a qualifying medical condition, we may see a lot of HIV+ persons switch over to the dispensary products.”

The great variety of products available in the medical marijuana market and lack of more sophisticated ability to homogenize ingredients and measure dosing make this type of scientific venture a challenge. Dr. Cook hopes that an additional benefit of their study will help narrow down the scope of products to a few that could later be examined and compared more closely.

“Given the huge range of potential products that people may use, one of the goals of our project is to try to narrow down the options that could be tested in future randomized clinical trials,” he said. “Ultimately, I hope we can conduct some clinical trials of ‘product A vs. product B’ to better inform patients, providers and policymakers.”

This will also provide an opportunity to monitor use patterns, possible misuse and any resulting changes “related to planning and motivation, to see whether these aspects of cognitive function change over time with increasing or decreasing marijuana use.”

Science sometimes answers a question with a better question. Although we will have to wait for answers on this one, results should shed further light on how cannabis may already be helping many Floridians with HIV and guide us to ask better questions for the next round of inquiry.

This One Thing Can Stop The Legal Marijuana Initiative In New Jersey

The incoming Speaker of the New Jersey Assembly has yet to indicate whether or not he supports legal marijuana.

Speaking at a news conference after he was voted in on Monday, Craig Coughlin, a member of the Assembly since 2010, said he wants to make sure it makes sense before he decides. “As with any bill — particularly any bill that would create something new — I think the devil is really in the details. And I think we need to understand it in its totality.”  He added:

Even if we’re going to do it, I want to make sure the bill is the right bill.

Legalizing marijuana is a focus of Governor-elect Phil Murphy, a fellow Democrat.

Murphy, who promises to legalize and tax cannabiswill succeed Republican Chris Christie in January. (Christie has gone on record referring to legal marijuana as a “gateway drug.”). If Murphy has his way, he says legalizing pot will bring in more than $300 million a year in tax revenue.

According to NJ.com, Coughlin doesn’t necessarily oppose legalizing marijuana, he just wants Assembly leaders to fully examine all proposals before they make a decision, and to “have people at the end of the day say, ‘They really thought about this stuff. They paid attention to it.'”

As to whether or not he thinks legalizing marijuana will combat the country’s opioid addiction epidimic, he said:

There are gonna be arguments on both sides of what the effect of legalizing marijuana is. I think in order to determine whether that’s right and best in the state of New Jersey, we need to hear those arguments, right? I think that’s why we have committee hearings.

Coughlin will be sworn in January 9, replacing current democratic Speaker Vincent Prieto.

Tired of Hummus? Try Cannabis-Infused Vegan White Bean Tapenade

Sometimes the simplest things are best, and this is a dish that has never failed me on tired nights when there’s not much in the pantry. My obsession with what is essentially white beans on toast started at a favorite Italian haunt in the East Village, Supper.

The family of restaurants behind Supper populate my go-to list when I’m too high to function and need a reliably delicious meal with good service. It doesn’t hurt that they also deliver to my door if need be. No matter how I end up with their food, it comes with a small dish of marinated white beans, and it’s honestly the best part. Sometimes I make it at home, and it’s never quite the same, but it’s still flavorful and satisfying.

Hummus and other cold bean dishes and spreads are common the whole Mediterranean over, from chickpeas in the Levantine, fava and yigantes of Greece, to the cannellini and lentil prevalence in Italy. Personally, if hummus isn’t fresh(handmade) and only gently mashed, I’m not interested, but other beans are filling the void. Cannellini and great northern beans are mild flavored and take seasoning extremely well. It’s why they are a soup staple, and why they are a humble but delicious appetizer or side dish.

White Bean Tapenade

Inspired by Supper Restaurant, New York City (with edits and tweaks)

  • 2 cans small white beans, cannellini, white kidney, or great northern are all acceptable
  • 1 head of garlic
  • 1 tsp red pepper flakes
  • Fresh parsley
  • Dried herbs and spices
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Peel of one lemon (grated or peeled in strips)
  • 1 cup total extra virgin olive oil (use desired amount of Weed Olive Oil* within this quantity)
  • Toasted bread slices
  • Optional grated Pecorino for sprinkling
Photos by Danielle Guercio

Rinse canned beans thoroughly and allow to strain further while you prepare marinade. If you want to used cooked dry beans, prepare according to package and make sure they are fully cooled after cooking.

Photos by Danielle Guercio

Smash and chop garlic, you want it as finely minced as possible so that you can taste garlic in every bite, but it gets marinated by the oil and has a milder taste. You can use any combination of herbs, thyme and tarragon match really well, especially lemony thyme varieties. Chop both fresh and dried herbs finely.

Photos by Danielle Guercio

Add oil, garlic, and herbs and lemon to a clean jar with dried pepper flakes, cracked black pepper, and about ½ tsp salt. Mix well and add beans, stir to combine. Refrigerate overnight and serve on toast or with flatbread. Keeps up to 5 days in a sealed jar.

*Weed Olive Oil

Decarboxylate 3.5g of finely ground cannabis at 225 degrees for 20 minutes in a tightly sealed, oven safe container. Put in lidded mason jar or vacuum sealed bag with cannabis and four ounces of olive oil. Heat in water bath just under boiling for at least 1 hour. Strain and chill to use in recipes.

Photos by Danielle Guercio

You can eat right away with toasted bread, but it tastes best after a day in the fridge when all the flavors can meld together, also like soup.

My perfect bean dream is a heaping tablespoon smushed into well toasted bread with even more beans pressed in, topped with a sprinkle of sharp pecorino, which is easy to nix if you’re vegan. This is downright addictive even without the cheese, which I use as more of a seasoning in this case.

The 10 Apps Millennials Can’t Live Without Are Not What You Think

0

If you had to guess what app 18- to 34-year-olds would die without, what would your answer be? Instagram? Snapchat? If so, you’d be wrong.

The analytic company ComScore conducted a survey and found that Amazon is the single app Millennials must have on their phone at all times. (Snapchat didn’t even crack the top 10.) Instagram came in dead last, following the likes of YouTube, Facebook and Gmail.

Andrew Lipsman, the senior vice president of insights and marketing at comScore, tells Business Insider:

It speaks to a broader insight, which is that millennials seem to recognize the importance of the more functional apps, like Amazon, Gmail and Google Maps. I’d imagine if you asked which apps they found to be the ‘most fun’ you’d probably see the social, video and music apps hit the top of the list.

According to comScore, mobile apps account for 57 percent of all digital media usage, and smartphone apps alone capture more than half of digital media time spent.
