Science: Here Is The Single Best Way To Save The Planet

0

Don’t procreate. That’s the advice from scientists who have calculated just how much of an environmental impact not having children has on the earth.

Choosing to limit the number of offspring one has is more effective at reducing your carbon footprint than not driving your car, riding in an airplane and eating a plant-based diet.

The findings come courtesy of researchers in Canada and Sweden who compared 31 green-oriented “lifestyle choices” (transportation, recycling, skipping plastic bags)  to see which was best at cutting earth shattering emissions.

Speaking to NBC News, study co-author Seth Wynes says, “Until we’ve completely decarbonized society, adding another person to the planet is always going to add more emissions. We don’t want to knock recycling, but some people…are ready to step up their game and do something a little more challenging for the environment.”

While saying “no” to plastic grocery bags cuts about 11 pounds of carbon dioxide from one’s footprint, adopting a vegetarian diet cuts a ton (even more is switching to a vegan diet). But not having kids? Wynes and his fellow researches concluded that single action cuts the carbon footprint by 65 million tons a year (that number considers the greenhouse gases emitted from your child’s perceived progeny).

Of course, ending procreation all together just leads to more problems (like, you know, zero population) and critics say it’s no solution at all, and that obviously telling families not to have kids is a big ask. And who knows? Maybe this next generation of children will be the ones who solve the global warming issue.

Wynes agrees, and says his research should at the very least be a tool that families use when considering how many children to have.

“For me personally,” he tells NBC News, “the climate is very important…I want to leave a healthy atmosphere for future generations. It’s something I’m going to be cognizant of, but not everyone is in the same place.”

Gossip: New ‘Sex And The City’ Film Without Kim Cattrall; Blac Chyna Tell-All Book?

After confessing that plans for a third Sex and The City came crashing down, Sarah Jessica Parker is now considering moving forward with the project without Kim Cattrall whose wanted too much money to return.

“Sarah and Kim have never gotten along in real life and now Sarah blames Kim for stopping the latest film. After a lot of thought, Sarah has decided that it would be best for Cattrall to not be part of the third film in the franchise,” sources tell Straight Shuter. “Kim was initially part of the film and in the new script but after that didn’t work out Sarah thinks they are better off without her. Her character Samantha has had heath issues and is older than Carrie, Charlotte and Miranda so she can easily kill her off. Remember the show has dealt with a lot of tough subjects before and now the girls might be dealing with a funeral.”

Blac China Tell-All Book?

As the war between The Kardashians and Blac Chyna gets nastier, sources say Chyna is ready to divulge everything she knows about the family

A source says, “She’s planning to reveal everything she knows about the Kardashians. Kris and Kim are terrified. Kylie would be a target of a lot of the shocking revelations, what Chyna knows would shock Kylie’s fans!”

NFL’s Josh Gordon Comes Clean About Marijuana Usage

To call Josh Gordon a phenom talent of an NFL receiver somehow understates it. Through his first two seasons in the league, Gordon was a high-magnitude earthquake, tearing down defenses on his way to become a first-team All-Pro and was the first receiver to accumulate 200 yards receiving in back-to-back games.

Then he effectively disappeared. Gordon was suspended multiple times from the league for violating the substance abuse policy. The rap on Gordon was that he just wouldn’t stop smoking weed. He applied for reinstatement this year, but was denied by the powers that be. It seemed he might never play football professionally again.

But in a new mini-documentary produced by Uninterrupted, the athlete-driven sports media company owned by LeBron James and his business partner Maverick Carter, Gordon revealed his struggle with abuse and his addiction to pain relief of all kinds. He also discussed why he never seemed to take the suspensions seriously until it was too late.

“I’ve used alcohol on many, many occasions, Xanax on many occasions, cocaine several occasions, marijuana most of my life, codeine, cough syrup, methazine is very prevalent where I’m from,” Gordon says. “It’s what I grew up using.

“I’ve been enabled most of my life, honestly. I mean, I’ve been enabled by coaches, teachers, professors; everybody pretty much gave me a second chance because of my ability.”

The most eye-opening moment of the documentary involves a Baylor coach assisting Gordon to cheat a drug test following a marijuana possession arrest. Knowing he would be tested by the NCAA’s drug compliance officers, his coach gave Gordon what he called “bottles of detox” and demonstrated how to consume them. That way he could still play for Baylor.

Though his weed habits continued, the only time Gordon failed a drug test in college? When his coach didn’t bring him his “bottles of detox.”

“That was my first experience with getting over on the system and that authority not really being taken seriously, because it was kind of being guided by somebody that’s employed by the same university,” says Gordon in the film.

It’s a powerful documentary about someone with pain—more than just physical at that—who is isn’t helped by the system aimed to protect him because of what his special talents offer the powers that be. Gordon is humble and honest throughout, and is serious about saving his life, not just his career.

Following the release of the film, LeBron James tweeted his support for Gordon. So did Gordon’s former quarterback, Robert Griffin III.

Make Fall Happen With These Cannabis-Infused Apple Cider Donuts

Apples are so important to Americana that they are used to reference America. The juicy, sweet fruits grow in abundance and in not so welcoming temperatures. Without them, colonial settlers would have starved. In the 1700s in New Jersey, where there are apple orchards as abundant as tanning salons are today.

The nonalcoholic cider we have today is only made possible with the advent of refrigeration, as in times past it would have started to ferment in mere moments. Aside from mulling and drinking, cider is great when added to desserts.

Hemp was also arguably a huge part of the survival of the colonies, and if America wants to keep growing with the times, they’ll have a reconciliation with the plant, and its past. People used hemp smoke for asthma and pain back then, and we’re going to use it for that, in edible form.

Baked Apple Cider Donuts

Original recipe The Faux Martha.com
Makes 6 donuts with 10mg THC per donut estimated

  • ½ cup cake flour
  • ½ cup whole wheat flour
  • 3 Tbs cannabutter*
  • ⅓ cup reduced cider
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 Tbs honey
  • 1 egg
  • 1 Tbs cinnamon, ground
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 vanilla pod, seeds reserved for something special
  • Half of a freshly grated nutmeg berry
  • Half of a whole nutmeg berry
  • 1 tsp ground allspice
  • ½ tsp ground clove
  • 2-3 cracked cardamom pods
  • 1 star anise pod
  • Powdered sugar for garnish

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Pour ¾ cup of cider in a small saucepan and simmer with only the whole spices from the list. In about 25 minutes it should be reduced to ⅓ cup. Strain and allow to cool. Once it’s dropped down from near boiling but is still warm, stir in cannabutter to gently melt. Then stir in honey, put aside.

Mix all dry ingredients and spices together. Make a well in the center and crack in the egg. Give it a light stir to break the yolk, and begin to add the liquid while you mix with a spatula.

Once the batter has come together, scoop the contents into a ziplock or pastry bag. Pipe into a donut pan, it should just fill it, and bake for 10 minutes, rotating after half of the time. If a toothpick comes out clean you can take them out, but don’t bake for more than 2-3 extra minutes to maintain a moist texture.

Photos by Maria Penaloza

Cool the donuts all the way before removing from the pan, and if you give them a slight twist, they should release from the pan easier. Dust with powdered sugar and serve with tea or coffee.

*Cannabutter

Decarboxylate 3.5g of finely ground cannabis at 225 degrees for 20 minutes in a tightly sealed, oven safe container. Put cannabis in lidded mason jar or vacuum sealed bag with cannabis and one stick of butter. Heat in water bath just under boiling for at least 1 hour. Strain and chill to use in recipes.

Pumpkin is cool and all but apple cider was one of the first things to become distinctly American, and combining that iconic ingredient with cannabis is sure to keep your afternoons warmer.

Licking Psychedelic Toads Is A Rite In This Religion

Bufo Alvarious is also known as the Colorado River Toad, an animal that amassed great popularity in the ’70s. Legends and myths surround this toad: if you lick it, your life will never be the same. That’s what the Church Of The Toad Of Light believes, at least.

Albert Most founded this church – even though it was never recognized by the US government for obvious reasons – and it has gathered a heap of followers who believe that ingesting the venom of this little toad will take them on a psychedelic trip like no other.

There’s a book called Bufo Alvarius: The Psychedelic Toad of the Sonoran Desert, that explains what happens when you lick the toad. No, that’s not a euphemism for something else.

It’s important to highlight that people don’t literally lick the toad, because it’s very poisonous. The toad’s venom is milked out of it – ew – dried, and then smoked. Obviously, the toad doesn’t have any magical powers, people are just getting really high. Albert Most claims that users will experience an LSD-like mind-bending journey that’ll also make them laugh a lot and get them extremely high.

Has anyone ever done this? According to Herb.com, a couple of ethnobotanists called Wade David and Andrew Weil ingested the venom and claimed that the effects were super wild.

Like being shot out of a rifle barrel lined with baroque paintings and landing on a sea of electricity.”

Currently, it’s illegal to move these kind of toads out of their native areas of New Mexico, Arizona and California, because they’re an endangered species. If you’re not from there, and feel really curious about the Church of The Toad Of Light, you’ll have to book a flight to experience the real deal.

Why Kathy Bates Thinks Marijuana Is ‘So Much Better Now’

To paraphrase Michelle Obama, “When they go low, we get high.” So proclaimed Kathy Bates in a recent interview with Stephen Colbert on the “Late Show.”

Bates, as you likely know if you read this site, is the star of Netflix’s new cannabis workplace sitcom “Disjointed.” The Chuck Lorre production wasn’t our cup of dosed tea, but it does mark a mainstream passage for conversations regarding cannabis. Bates sat with Colbert to discuss the show, and boy did he have some questions about how Bates researched in preparation for the role.

“Pot is so much better now,” Bates proclaimed. She also discussed having a cannabis consultant on set, who goes by the wonderful name of Dr. Dina 420.

But perhaps the most wonderful anecdote Bates shared with Colbert revolved around why you shouldn’t share a joint with a stranger—even if that stranger is someone like Bill Maher. At Penny Marshall’s birthday party, Bates enjoyed a small hit of Maher’s joint. But the situation wasn’t as fun as it sounds for the actress.

“I don’t even remember what happened. It was just insane,” she said. “I had to get talked down by one of the other people at the table. She had to hold my hand and say, ‘It’s OK. You’re going to be alright. Really, honey, you’ll be fine. Just breath.’ It was horrible.”

Let that be a lesson for all you mooches out there.

Gossip: Angelina Jolie Wants Brad Pitt Back; Which Actress Gave Harvey Weinstein Oral Sex To Get Part?

“Angie misses him. She thought the grass would be greener but it is not. She is alone and she thinks she made the biggest mistake of her life,” sources tell NAUGHTY GOSSIP. “They are still talking but she wants him back. She hopes that it isn’t too late. She hopes that he misses her too.”

In other Angie news, this would make a good movie.

The former chief prosecutor for the International Criminal Court had a thing for celebrities — once asking activist actress Angelina Jolie to play the role of a “honey trap’’ in a real-life attempt to arrest a notorious African warlord, a published report said Saturday. The Sunday Times of London said loopy lawman Luis Moreno Ocampo also tried to recruit film stars George Clooney and Sean Penn in his international crusades. The startling information was leaked by the court to the French website Mediapart and made available to the British newspaper.

Moreno Ocampo approached Jolie about five years ago — and even tried to cast her husband, Brad Pitt, as a co-star — in a stranger-than-fiction plot to take Ugandan Joseph Kony into custody in the Central African Republic, where he was based.

“Forget other celebrities, she is the one,” Moreno Ocampo wrote in an e-mail. “She loves to arrest Kony. She is ready. Probably Brad will go also.”

Moreno Ocampo wanted to embed Jolie, and hopefully Pitt, with US Special Forces close to Kony’s stronghold, according to the report. Jolie wrote Moreno Ocampo at one point. “Brad is being supportive. Let’s discuss logistics. Much love Xxx.”

Moreno Ocampo claimed Jolie had suggested she could lure Kony to dinner as a ruse to arrest him, the report said. American troops, he told her, “are eager to get Kony . . . [and] after meeting you, they will do it.”

Moreno Ocampo had his own fixation on Jolie. The prosecutor, who won only one case in his nine-years on the court, was ultimately even less successful with Jolie. At one point he sent her an e-mail: “Dear Angie, I hope you are well. I miss you.” It went unanswered. When he heard she was ill, he sent an e-mail to her assistant confessing: “I realize how much I love her.” The assistant replied Jolie had changed her e-mail address.

Which Actress Gave Harvey Weinstein Oral Sex To Get Part?

This TV host and cover girl turned big time actresses when she got a part in a film produced by Harvey Weinstein but it came at a cost. She once told friends that the car had to drop her off at Harvey’s office so she could, “suck his fat c**k in order to get the part.” At the time everyone thought she was joking but now they all fear it was TRUE.

Meryl Streep is speaking out against her frequent collaborator Harvey Weinstein after he was accused of decades of sexual harassment.

“The disgraceful news about Harvey Weinstein has appalled those of us whose work he championed, and those whose good and worthy causes he supported,” the three-time Oscar winner, 68, said in a statement to HuffPost on Monday, October 9. “The intrepid women who raised their voices to expose this abuse are our heroes.”

“One thing can be clarified. Not everybody knew,” the actress said. “Harvey supported the work fiercely, was exasperating but respectful with me in our working relationship, and with many others with whom he worked professionally. I didn’t know about these other offenses: I did not know about his financial settlements with actresses and colleagues; I did not know about his having meetings in his hotel room, his bathroom, or other inappropriate, coercive acts. And if everybody knew, I don’t believe that all the investigative reporters in the entertainment and the hard news media would have neglected for decades to write about it.”

She concluded, “The behavior is inexcusable, but the abuse of power familiar. Each brave voice that is raised, heard and credited by our watchdog media will ultimately change the game.”

Weinstein initially took a leave of absence from his company on Thursday, October 5, after The New York Times published an extensive report detailing nearly three decades of allegations against him. The report also revealed that the producer reached legal settlements between $80,000 and $150,000 with at least eight women. Weinstein apologized in a statement to the Times, saying, “I came of age in the ’60s and ’70s, when all the rules about behavior and workplaces were different. That was the culture then.” His attorney Lisa Bloom (who has since resigned) said her client “denies many of the accusations as patently false.”

The Miramax co-founder was fired from The Weinstein Company by its board of directors on Sunday, October 8.

Where Will You Be Able To Smoke California’s Legal Cannabis?

Californians 21 and older will soon be able to purchase legal cannabis over the counter, but it’s not clear where they’ll be able to smoke outside of their own private residences. California is the world’s sixth largest economy and is brimming with tourism…so what’s up?

Starting in January it will be legal to sell, buy and grow cannabis, but the ballot measure had very strict rules as to where one can smoke or even ingest legally.

Streets, parks and other public places will be off limits, as will cars, bars and offices. Anyplace that already doesn’t tolerate tobacco smoke is banned. Nowhere that sells alcohol or tobacco. Plus, it’ll be up to landlords whether to permit smoking in hotels and apartments.

Outside of a private home, the only place left would be a pot lounge, but there are very few social clubs in the works. There are zero planned so far in Los Angeles proper.

Whereas tobacco smokers have always had the option of stepping outside for a smoke, cannabis imbibers are put in a position of once again breaking the law, regardless of legalization. Tickets for public pot smoking will result in fines up to $250.

One workaround is to have private social clubs, where it’s bring your own weed and smoke it without worry. These types of clubs are already on the rise, but their legality is questionable.

As the new law was meant to legalize as well as regulate cannabis, it would make sense to propose reasonable ways for Californians and their visitors to smoke. Legitimized social clubs, away from schools and children’s care centers, and with rules that make them more publically digestible – as in, not a nuisance – would be ideal.

Think of the hypocrisy here. California is willing to take taxes from growers and sellers of cannabis, but worries that social clubs might encourage drug use. Did someone forget that you can’t have your cake and eat it too?

Since Californians voted the law in, hoping to treat cannabis more like alcohol, they should really do so and provide places for consumption onsite. DWIs might be a concern, but bars operate daily and police forces are well versed on drugged driving. All in all, public places to consume will be the next piece in California’s cannabis puzzle.

Anti-Drug DARE Program Making A Comeback In Colorado

If you grew up in the 1980s or early 1990s, you probably remember a police officer visiting your classroom to explain the dangers of drugs. DARE — Drug Abuse Resistance Education — fell out of favor two decades ago after research proved the program simply did not work.

Despite the earlier failure, DARE is making a comeback in some Colorado schools, according to a report in the Denver Post. According to the reporting from Monte Whaley, not everyone is pleased with the news:

“The DARE brand is toxic,” said Andrew Freedman, former director of Marijuana Coordination for the State of Colorado, which set up the regulatory framework for the state’s pot industry. Freedman is also leading the Youth Marijuana Prevention Council, a drug-abuse prevention group.

“I know DARE strikes a nostalgic chord for a lot of adults, certainly adults of a certain generation,” said Freedman. “But what works with kids is not the same message.”

But a specialist in substance prevention with the Denver Public Schools believes the time is right to reintroduce some of the messaging. “I’m a realist. We do know there are medicinal properties in marijuana and kids will likely be exposed to its use,” said Kennedy Sabelko.  “We need to meet kids where they are at. Just telling kids they can’t do that is not going to work.”

Sabelko and other supporters of the new DARE messaging believe the current version is more rooted in science. DARE 2.0, they say, is built on the ideas of prevention specialists and scientists. The original program was designed off of the ideas of law enforcement, which did not have a strong grasp of educating children.

In 1999, a study conducted by the American Psychological Association concluded that the DARE curriculum was ineffective. Two years later, the Office of the Surgeon General arrived at the same conclusion. And then in 2013, the Government Accounting Office found that DARE may actually have increased drug use among some adolescents.

Richard Clayton, a critic of the previous attempts by DARE to educate children, applauds the new efforts. “DARE took the scientific community seriously, worked hard with them, and now DARE has become a lot more effective,” Clayton told the Post. “My hat is off to them.”

Studies suggest that the new program is working.  Last year, the US Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy lauded DARE for providing students with accurate information about substance abuse.
