Can CBD Chase Away The Monday Blues?

For many, Mondays can be tough, can CBD help ease into the week?

Happy Monday, the start of a fresh week and endless opportunities and new adventures.  But, not everyone has the same outlook.  In fact, a study found that, for 81% of employees, Mondays are the most stressful day of the week. And 70% of employees admit to suffering with the Sunday scaries.  The comic strip Garfield has a long running joke about how much he hates Mondays. Can CBD chase away the Monday blues? The answer is maybe, but it is also a start for developing a better outlook.

In general, we consider our days off as our own time giving us control over sleeping, eating and activities. If possible, people try to sleep more and relax.  While this sounds great, it disrupts the week’s sleep pattern, making Sunday night’s “bed routine” a bit harder. Also, must people only set their alarm for the weekend when they have something they planned and want to do, as opposed to the alarm on Monday morning.

The average weekend can include robust eating and drinking, These things take a toll on you physically, which may be why one study found that American women of all ages and locations feel least attractive on Mondays.

CBD is legal, sold at Walmart and Amazon and has a variety of claims.  But can it put you in a better mood for Monday?  The answer is maybe. A chart review of 72 psychiatric patients treated with CBD found reduced anxiety.  Great way to start the week.  But the same study found it did not not improve sleep, a key to a good morning.

A different double-blind study found healthy volunteers administered CBD had little to no change in their emotional reaction to unpleasant images or words, compared to the placebo group. “If it’s a calming drug, it should change their responses to the stimuli,” said Harriet de Wit, co-author of the study and a professor in the University of Chicago’s department of psychiatry and behavioral neuroscience. “But it didn’t.”

There is plenty of anecdotal accounts that cbd relieves anxiety and makes you a bit more relaxed.  While there is still research being done on the what cbd can do in the right dosage, you can try it on your own and see for yourself. We know cbd is not damaging and attempting to change the perception is better than doing nothing.

Do You Get High On Medical Marijuana?

With 40 states legalizing medical marijuana and the American Medical Association seeing value in the plant as an aid, more people are using it in their medical help tool box.  Medical marijuana has shown it can help with nausea, pain management, the treatment of cancer, especially during chemo, sleep, depression and more.  There are over 4 million registered patients and many times more of those who try it on a smaller basis. But do you get high on medical marijuana?

Pre-legalization, medical marijuana users had to rely on their personal friends or dealer to secure the plant and then figure out a way for it to be consumed.  Joints and brownies were the most popular and regulating the amount of THC proved difficult. This sometimes left the patient physically better and mentally stoned.

So regulating the amount of THC is an art in medical marijuana because you want the benefits but may not want to be fully stoned. THC’s chemical structure is similar to the brain chemical anandamide. Similarity in structure allows the body to recognize THC and to alter normal brain communication. They affect brain areas that influence pleasure, memory, thinking, concentration, movement, coordination, and sensory and time perception. Because of this similarity, THC is able to attach to molecules called cannabinoid receptors on neurons in these brain areas and activate them, disrupting various mental and physical functions. THC, acting through cannabinoid receptors, also activates the brain’s reward system, which includes regions that govern the response to healthy pleasurable behaviors such as sex and eating.

In legal medical marijuana states, the packaging should tell you the strength of the product.  Edibles, oils, and vapes tend to be the most popular way to consume for medicinal purposes.

The FDA doesn’t oversee medical marijuana like it does prescription drugs. Although states monitor and regulate sales, they often don’t have the resources to do so. That means the strength of and ingredients in medical marijuana can differ quite a bit depending on where you buy it. Talk with knowledge staff at the retailer, explain your purpose and ask any questions.  If the first product doesn’t fully help, look for more help and guidance. The industry is full of people who want you to have exactly what seek.

Marijuana Fan Samantha Blows In To And Just Like That!

Kim Cattrall’s sex and marijuana liberated Samantha blows into And Just Like That!

In a surprise that has delighted millions of fans, Samantha Jones blows in to on the Max series And Just Like That!  Kim Cattrall became a breakout star and icon in the original series Sex in the City. People watched as she embraced tomorrow with her views on sex, relationships, work and marijuana.

Sex in the City premiered on 6 June 1998 and concluded on 22 February 2004, with 94 episodes broadcast over six seasons. It continues to live on cable and streaming channels. Among the four co-stars, Kim Cattrall’s character Samantha Jones was the most care-free and open – setting the tone for the “sex” part in the city.

Fun loving Samantha was a hedonist with a heart.

Liberated she tried everything from monogamy, to being fluid to serial one nights stands and everything in between. A fan of the cocktail, she also didn’t shy away from marijuana.  And this was in the pre-legal days.

In a sign of how things have changed, a bar sued to stop an episode with cannabis. One week before “The Post-It Always Sticks Twice” was set to be released, a bar filed paperwork to prevent HBO from airing the episode. The bar, which had been business for more than a decade in 2003, took issue with the fact that the characters scored marijuana while hanging out at the nightspot.  Now in NYC there are 1,700 unlicensed shops even though it is recreational legal in the state including some near the bar.

When interviewed, Cattrall shared “Let’s just say that I have more than tried marijuana and I took a tip from Samantha – when you’re in an intimate situation it can certainly make you feel more relaxed”.  She helped people accept the fun things marijuana can do in and out of the bedroom.

Samantha’s ordeal with cancer also provided an opportunity to talk about medical marijuana.  While accepted at the time, it wasn’t as wide spread and still had stigma.  Ten years would pass before it truly came out of the closet.

Fans were crushed when Cattrall decided to reduce her involvement and rumors about clashing personalities abounded.  The Sex in the City sequel And Just Like That has struggled in finding a voice and capturing some of the magic, maybe the return of Samantha can give it a little extra push.

Cattrall opined “Especially now you can get marijuana in different tastes and flavours, it’s becoming like a wine itself”.  And our guess are fans will be enjoying cannabis, wine or cocktail to catch her appearance.

ATF Says Yes To Guns Except For, You Know, Cannabis

There has been a ton of buzz in lately about the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) stand on marijuana.  With 24 states now saying it is cannabis is fully legal and 40 having medical marijuana, the public is reevaluating how it approaches the drug.  An estimated 88% of Americans are for some form of legalization and only 10% are against.  Yet it faces huge hurdles including the ATF holding it to a different standard than alcohol.

So how is this different than the other big intoxicant alcohol? Drug possession is still the number one cause of arrest. The highest number of arrests were for all drugs (estimated at 1,552,432 arrests) followed by driving under the influence (estimated at 1,282,957).

Drivers accused or convicted of misdemeanor DUI do not face a loss of their right to purchase, own, and possess a firearm. There are exceptions, if you have 3 or more DUIs, if you have felony DUI (felony DUI charges are ones that result in injury or death), or if the DUI is part of a package of other crimes you have committed.

Under a decades old law from 1968, ATF asserted users of marijuana remain barred from purchasing and possessing guns.  This inlcudes states who have legalized recreational they  warned this week.

Until marijuana is legalized on a federal level, users of cannabis will continue to be prohibited from shipping, transporting, receiving or possessing firearms and ammunition, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, or ATF, said in a notice.

So to be clear, you must be convicted 3 time with an alcohol DUI to lose your gun rights OR be caught casually consuming cannabis.  The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism estimates that 25-30% of violent crimes in the United States are linked to the use of alcohol. According to a report from the U.S. Dept. of Justice, that translates to about 5,000,000 alcohol-related violent crimes per year. By contrast, the government does not even track violent acts specifically related to marijuana use, as the use of marijuana has not been associated with violence.

Medical Marijuana, according to the government, is also helpful for the treatment of pain and some disease.  But if you are patient that consumes, the ATF says you are lose your Second Amendment right.

Government and bureaucracies are slow to change.  It is a bipartisan issue with states like Missouri, Montana and Arizona with legal weed, so it it should be treated more fair.

Why Uganda Legalized Weed Is CRAZY – They Are A Hot Mess!

The world is a wacky place and right now there is all sorts of nonsense going on. But for a small country, Uganda takes the cake.  They have managed to pull together the warring Democrats and Republicans to be upset about their LGBT+ policy.  And if you look a bit deeper, they are just a hot mess! Why Uganda legalized weed is a bit crazy.

You would think a country which has a sort of legalized weed and encourages medical marijuana to be normal, just look at Italy, Canada, Mexico, a host of Scandinavian countries and more.  But nope, Uganda blazes their own trail and leave people singed behind. What can you expect from a close ally of Putin?

Currently, the country is embroiled in a huge LGBT+ scandal. Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni signed one of the world’s toughest anti-LGBTQ laws, including the death penalty for “aggravated homosexuality”. Uganda is filled with allegations of arbitrary killings of opposition supporters, disenfranchisement and voter intimidation, bribery, shutting down social media websites, and lack of transparency and independence in the Electoral Commission marred the elections, which fell short of international standards.

On Transparency International’s 2022 Corruption Perceptions Index, Uganda scored 26 on a scale from 0 (“highly corrupt”) to 100 (“very clean”). When ranked by score, Uganda ranked 142nd among the 180 countries in the Index, where the country ranked last is perceived to have the most corrupt public sector.

So why legalize marijuana? Over a period of 8 years, the government’s Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) seized 11 pounds of cannabis and officially arrested some 482 people for possession …which equals less than a gram per person. Harsh for such a small amount.

In addition, the 2010 International Narcotics Control Strategy Report highlighted that there were only two detection dogs for conducting drug searches and no drug test kits or X-ray machines to detect drugs, along with the fact that the local police were both corrupt and inadequately trained.

In May, Uganda’s Constitutional Court made a decision that reportedly nullified the nation’s entire Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Control Act. This made it semi not illegal, but not fully legal…putting it in a no man’s land.

And money comes to play for key players. The export of cannabis for medicinal purposes was approved by the Ugandan Ministry of Health in January 2020, which stipulated among other things that all cannabis exporters had to have a minimum capital of US $5,000. Prior to this, however, Industrial Hemp Uganda, a private company had already been exporting medicinal cannabis to Germany and China. So, legal when it generates revenue for key players.

Marijuana And Fertility

There is an old joke a guy telling a women alcohol is bad for you if you want to have children and the woman snaps back and says if it wasn’t for alcohol there would be half the number of babies.  Science says you shouldn’t drink or use marijuana while pregnant, but what does it say about marijuana and fertility.
Fertility is a fickle thing. fertility is genetic, and there actually are some people who can be classified as super fertile. This is all dependent on sperm and egg health. About 25% of women have difficulty getting pregnant or carrying a pregnancy to term. And it takes two to have fertility issues. Both men and women can contribute to infertility.

For women, frequent use can cause issues which could tamp down fertility. Consuming as often as three times per week may have impacts says a report published online in the journal Fertility & Sterility Science.  Evidence suggests that marijuana can reduce female fertility by disrupting hypothalamic release of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH), leading to reduced estrogen and progesterone production and anovulatory menstrual cycles. It can also delay or inhibit ovulation.

Another study’s data showed for each monthly cycle, women who had used cannabis while trying to conceive were 41% less likely to conceive than non-users. Similarly, a smaller proportion of cannabis users than non-users became pregnant during the study — 42% versus 66%. The authors found no differences in miscarriage rates between users and non-users who had achieved pregnancy.

When it comes to guys, consuming seems to a negative impact on male fertility. This study suggests a negligible clinical effect of cannabis use on testicular function. Marijuana use may have a detrimental effect on semen quality, particularly morphology and volume, but maybe protective against abnormal sperm motility. Long-term marijuana use can adversely affects male fertility and has been associated with testicular atrophy, low libido, sexual dysfunction, semen parameters, and reproductive hormone levels

Are All Edibles The Same State to State?

Can I get the same gummies on a cross country road trip?  Well no, um…maybe

People are getting in their cars or boarding planes and enjoying travel this year.  According to the U.S. Travel Association, traveling is up 4% over 2019.  Airports were a bit wild on Memorial Day weekend as people want to go and do. But intermingled with new experience people like also find comfort in things they know like Starbucks Coffee, Cracker Barrel breakfast, tried and true fast foods, and favorite edibles.

When you travel, you might find the same edible by the same brand, but is it exactly the same? After all, a Hershey bar in Texas is the same as in Toronto, Honolulu and New York City. It is a complicated answered mired in a slow moving Congress.

Adult-use marijuana is still illegal at the federal level, and interstate commerce between the states regulating the industry is not allowed.  Rumors on Capitol Hill say once SAFE Banking passes, interstate commerce will be next.  Even if just for connected states like California/Oregon/Washington or New York/New Jersey.

This is a bigger challenge than it seems since federal regulations dictate that legal, regulated cannabis products can only be sold within the same state where they are manufactured, from the seed to grow to the facility where the gummy is produced, packaged and distributed, to the dispensary where you buy the product. Product companies cannot make their products from one hometown facility and then ship the finished product around the world.

This was a tricky situation but early leaders like Dixie Elixers (then known as Dixie Brands) took a page from McDonalds and Burger King and begin finding licensees to make exactly the same product in other states.  Sort of a franchise model with tight control over quality.

Now this is tougher than it sounds.  Some companies do it very well, think McDonalds.  Other companies, like Dairy Queen are a bit more loosey goose.

Colorado based Wana Brands, which prides itself on quality control and has products in 15 states and Canada is more like McDonalds.  Wana was sold to Canopy Grow, which has the alcohol giant Constellation Brands behind them. Their CEO, Nancy Whiteman, has the knowledge, runway and strength to ensure quality products from all their production products.

Not every company can do this and it makes it even harder for small startups to succeed.  Think building a solid product and having trouble moving it out of your midsized state.

Another issue is fake products. Green Market Report did an article from industry sources.  They share despite the continued prohibition of interstate commerce for cannabis, legally produced and packaged marijuana products from California are increasingly making their way to hundreds of smoke shops and bodegas in New York City. When questioned about where he’d obtained the goods, a proprietor said it from what’s known as a “burner distro” in California. In layman’s terms, he got it from a licensed California distribution company that willingly broke state law by shipping legal cannabis out of state.

It is also rumored some of the “verified California products” sold in NYC are knocks offs. Not unlike the Channel and Guccci bags on Canal Street.

So if you are traveling this summer you have a couple of options.  One, try something new or, if you have to have a favorite, go online and see where they sell their product around the US and Canada.

What Does Buddhism Think Of Marijuana

Marijuana is seen as a tool toward enlightenment, but what does Buddhism actually say about it?

Buddhism is not the most popular religion in North American with less 1 percent self identifying, but its ideas permeates our culture.  From song lyrics by the Beastie Boys and spiritual themes in Star Wars, to the publicly professed faith of celebrities including Orlando Bloom, Harrison Ford and Richard Gere.  Steve Jobs claimed to be a Buddhist. And nothing reflects the imagine of zen, peaceful state of mind than someone consuming marijuana. And, the name Buddha translates to “Awakened One” in Sanskrit.

This Is How Long You Should Meditate For Best Results

Buddhism is one of the world’s largest religions and originated 2,500 years ago in India. Buddhists believe that the human life is one of suffering, and that meditation, spiritual and physical labor, and good behavior are the ways to achieve enlightenment, or nirvana.

The Four Noble Truths comprise the essence of Buddha’s teachings, though they leave much left unexplained. They are the truth of suffering, the truth of the cause of suffering, the truth of the end of suffering, and the truth of the path that leads to the end of suffering.

Buddhism strongly discourages alcohol and other substances that intoxicates. This is despite the great diversity of Buddhist traditions across various countries. Alcohol has been on the frowned since the beginning of the religion. Consuming marijuana can help you quiet your mind and reach a zen like tranquility or temporary enlightement, but seems to be a bit at odds with Buddhism’s beliefs on intoxicants.

The Dalai Lama isn’t that keen on recreational marijuana use, but the spiritual leader told supporters in Mexico on in 2014 that he supports legal, medicinal marijuana when the drug has been shown to have value.

In Buddhism, the Fifth Precept is frequently interpreted to mean “refrain from intoxicating drinks and drugs which lead to heedlessness”, although in some direct translations, the Fifth Precept refers specifically to alcohol. Cannabis and some other psychoactive plants are specifically prescribed in the Mahākāla Tantra for medicinal purposes.

Medical marijuana has converts from all walks of like and Buddhism is one of its fans.  Consider the healing nature, fewer side effects and low cost, Buddhist appreciate the prop tiers of cannabis.

A Buddist quote is “May all beings have happy minds.”  For those who consume, you can take as you want.

Dementia and Marijuana

Medical marijuana can help many aliments – but does work with dementia?

Nothing is more heartbreaking than watching someone we love suffer from dementia.  While the face is the same, the mind and essence behind it slowly fades away. More than 8 million people had dementia in 2020. If current demographic and health trends continue, more than 10 million Canadians and Americans could have dementia by 2030 and nearly 12 million by 2040.

Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease are different. Dementia is a general term used to describe symptoms that impact memory, performance of daily activities, and communication abilities. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia. Alzheimer’s disease gets worse with time and affects memory, language, body functions and thought.

Is medical marijuana helpful with this horrible disease? Can it provide help to the patient and be an additional tool for the caregiver?

Why Grandma And Grandpa Want CBD For Grandparents Day This Sunday

So far, medical marijuana is not a breakthrough for dementia.  Little research has been done or shown that is makes a major different in the progression of the disease.  But there are glimmers of hope in managing some of the more difficult symptoms.

Dementia can affect a person’s personality and habits, which may lead to changes in behavior. They may become more anxious, aggressive, and confused. A few clinical trials have identified that medical marijuana can help manage behavioural symptoms in people with dementia, including agitation and aggression, but only in some cases.

RELATED: This Behavior Can Be An Early Sign Of Dementia

There is also potential help with sundowning.  Restlessness, agitation, irritability, or confusion can begin or worsen as daylight begins to fade, often just when tired caregivers need a break. Sundowning can continue into the night, making it hard for people with Alzheimer’s to fall asleep and stay in bed. Medical marijuana and cbd can be used to help with sleep and fighting insomnia.

A recent study also shows cannabis may be helpful in treating vascular dementia, which is a neurodegenerative disorder that often occurs along with Alzheimers. Vascular dementia is characterized by a lack of adequate blood flow to the brain, which leads to the death of cells. By activating the brain’s CB2 cannabinoid receptors, it may be possible to recover blood flow to the brain for a period of time.

Some research has shown low doses of THC can help restore some memory and learning levels in mice. The changes resulted from administering low doses of THC occurred because they affected the hippocampus. However, there is currently no research that studies this possible link between marijuana and dementia in humans.

The brain is a complex mystery and more research is being to understand how it functions. Organizations like the Allen Institue, are committed to unlocking the mysteries and possiblities of the brain.

RELATED: Science Says Medical Marijuana Improves Quality Of Life

A bit of caution about heavy marijuana habits. A study from the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease showed that marijuana users, when compared to non-marijuana users, had low blood flow in the hippocampus. The belief is that chronic marijuana use may block activity in this part of the brain, and it may damage areas of the brain that are pivotal to learning and memory.

Elizabeth Holmes bilked investors for billions, promoted bad medicine and then played the victim…good thing she wasn’t caught with marijuana or she would be in trouble!

The New York Times laid it out for people to “get her” and understand it was time to just move on. Elizabeth Holmes should be happy she wasn’t busted for marijuana!

The Federal government disagrees and she is due for prison. Well sort of prison.  She is going to Federal Camp Prison (FCP) Bryan, one of the best prisons to serve time.

Elizabeth, or Liz, should be grateful she swindled billions and endangered peoples lives, imagine if she had been caught with marijuana. Drug possession is still the number one cause of arrest.
