Michael Phelps Meets His Meme And It’s Amazing

0

A glitch in the Matrix appeared Thursday night: U.S. swimming god Michael Phelps came face-to-face with his Internet self. Phelps isn’t just an all-time gold-winning Olympian; he’s also an all-time meme. Prior to the 200m butterfly race in Rio and some pre-race antics from South African rival Chad Le Clois, Phelps revealed his alter ego: angry-face Phelps. Better known as #PhelpsFace.

Surely you remember the face. It remains a stalwart of Internet meme culture.

But when Phelps appeared on “The Tonight Show” Thursday, he started into the eyes of his angry soul—a cardboard cut-out of the Angry Phelps meme.

“I always know there’s two cameras in the upper right hand corner before we walk out,” Phelps said. “And I’m sitting there spitting water, like ‘Man, what is going on?’ And as I’m making a face I was like, ‘Yep, that’s on camera.'”

Phelps also went on to explain how he retired to run his baby Boomer’s Instagram account, which has developed quite a following of its own.

Phelps and Fallon also played a classic “Tonight Show” game, Egg Russian Roulette. Let’s just say his performance wasn’t that of the most-decorated Olympian in history. In other words, dude got yoked.

Finally, a bonus: here’s a couple of our old favorites of the angry-face Phelps memes from the Olympics. Try not to be intimidated.

Confusion in Arkansas: Two Marijuana Initiatives On Ballot

0

Arkansans will have two chances to vote for medical marijuana legalization this November, a head-scratching development that many cannabis advocates feel will hamper efforts to help patients.

The Secretary of State’s office reported on Wednesday that supporters of a proposed constitutional amendment turned in 97,284 valid signatures from registered voters, easily surpassing the 84,859 required to qualify for the ballot. In July, the state  approved a competing medical marijuana ballot measure.

There is a ray of hope for Arkansans in favor of medical marijuana: A poll conducted in June revealed that 58 percent of potential voters support the sale of cannabis to patients; 34 percent oppose the idea. Breaking down the poll data shows that Democrats (74 percent), African-Americans (73 percent) and those aged 30 to 44 (73 percent) are all supportive. State Republicans are split at 45 percent in favor and 45 percent against.

While the polling data suggests a victory for medical marijuana, the challenge of two competing ballot measures makes it difficult to parse. Studies suggest that when there is ballot confusion, voters tend to cast a “no” vote.

In 2012, Arkansas narrowly voted against medical marijuana. Could the dueling initiatives doom both to fail?

David Couch, the sponsor of the second measure approved Wednesday, rejected the notion. “I don’t think there will be any problem differentiating between the two,” Couch told the Associated Press.

But Melissa Fults, campaign manager for Arkansans for Compassionate Care, the group behind the first measure disagrees. She has urged Couch to drop his ballot measure. If both are on the ballot, she fears both are doomed to go down.

“It’s going to be confusing. We’ll be right next to each other on the ballot.” The Arkansas Medical Marijuana Amendment (AMMA) will be Issue 6. The Arkansas Medical Cannabis Act (AMCA) will be Issue 7.

Both would allow the state to set up a medical marijuana program and both contain similar provisions. But the devil is in the details and the two measures propose different regulatory plans to oversee growing and distribution cannabis.

Gov. Asa Hutchinson, a prominent Republican and former head of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, opposes both measures. He has repeatedly stated that legalizing marijuana would drain the state’s resources. Arkansas Democrats recently approved a platform that supports medical marijuana, but it does not mention either ballot measure.

Arkansas Business, a statewide publication, describes how the AMCA snd the AMMA differ.

Here are the details of both measures:

Watch Burning Man From The Comfort Of Your Own Underwear

0

If you’re reading this, you’re probably not at Burning Man. If you’re at Burning Man, you’re reading this through giant steampunk goggles, because wow the sand is everywhere. You’ve spent ~$400, plus costumes and mushrooms/weed/ecstasy/choose your favorite substance, to spend a week in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada and consider what “community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance” mean.

Either way, you can watch the livestream of the playa for the next few days, right here. As of this writing, the feed looks like a very chilled-out Mad Max set, where people bike lazily in and out of the gray dust clouds. Take a look for yourself; maybe it’s settled by now, and you’ll be able to spot a figure on stilts wearing nothing but a keffiyeh, some nose jewelry and goat horns. Enjoy!

See The SpaceX Rocket Explode In Florida

0

Two days before it was set to launch, a SpaceX rocket exploded at its Cape Canaveral launch pad Thursday morning. No one was injured in the blast, but the Falcon 9 rocket was carrying Facebook’s $95 million satellite—meant to help beam the internet to impoverished sub-Saharan Africa—when it burst into flames.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg posted a statement about the loss:

As I’m here in Africa, I’m deeply disappointed to hear that SpaceX’s launch failure destroyed our satellite that would have provided connectivity to so many entrepreneurs and everyone else across the continent. Fortunately, we have developed other technologies like Aquila that will connect people as well. We remain committed to our mission of connecting everyone, and we will keep working until everyone has the opportunities this satellite would have provided.

The cause of the explosion remains unknown, though SpaceX described the incident as an “anomaly.” CNN reports the company has launched 25 rockets from the Cape Canaveral location — Launch Complex 40, which it leases from the Air Force — since 2010.

113-Year Old Soba Restaurant Closes Because Owner Is Allergic To Soba

0

If the “Life’s not fair” proverb was a restaurant, it’d be Maruka in Tokyo’s Chiyoda Ward.

After 113 years in business, the soba shop was forced to close because of its owner’s crippling allergy to buckwheat, the main ingredient in soba.

The sign that hangs outside the restaurant reads:

To all our customers who have provided us with their patronage over the years since 1903 in the Kanda area, a long period of time which spans 113 years, we would like to express our deep gratitude from the bottom of our hearts. We sincerely thank you.

If there is any consolation, the sign also mentions that the closure is temporary, which may be plausible, but reopening seems highly unlikely anytime soon.

The tweet that brought the closure to the public’s attention has been retweeted more than 14,000 times since July.

RocketNews24 has translated some of the Twitter responses.

Eleven from ‘Stranger Things’ Can Perfectly Rap Nicki Minaj’s “Monster” Verse

The cast of Stranger Things went on The Tonight Show Wednesday and you might say things got…stranger. With the Netflix series’ popularity, it was inevitable they’d end up on performing some hijinks with Jimmy Fallon, and the tiny stars didn’t disappoint.

Following an interview with the four child actors who star in the show, the crew played a game called Stranger Strings, where they read secret facts about each other and spray silly string on whoever they suspect the fact was about.

Eventually, it was revealed that Millie Bobby Brown, who plays Eleven, could rap Nicki Minaj’s electric verse from Kanye’s “Monster.” This being Fallon’s show, of course he asked her to do with it Questlove providing a drumbeat. She killed it, especially considering there was silly string flying in her face.

Netflix recently announced that Stranger Things would be renewed for a second season. If that weren’t enough to excite fans, Fallon and the kids also provided a “deleted scene” in which Barb returns. Check it out below.

Oh, Sweet Jesus, the PSL Returns!

If you’re a die hard Pumpkin Spice Latte fan, you probably already know that there’s a way to get the Starbucks drink— now in its 13th year — early. The official release date is September 6, but if you go to the PSL Fan Pass website and enter your cell number, you’ll get a “pass” that allows you to drink a PSL today. (ed note: it took about 45 min. for me to receive mine via text).

If you’re not a PSL fan, you should be following the drink’s Twitter account anyway, because it’s adorable. Drinks wearing sunglasses, amiright?

“Blood on Me” by Sampha, Your Next Favorite UK Artist

You my recognize this artist, but probably never knew his name. His lastest release is changing his place in music lover’s hearts. Blood on me by Sampha, your next favorite UK artist is a hit. Consider Sampha the UK’s more obscure Frank Ocean: A soulful, sensitive crooner who released a captivating, we-need-more project, then subsequently disappeared from the spotlight save a few recent guest spots.

He’s appeared on Drake’s “Too Much,” Kanye West’s “Saint Pablo,” and had a feature on Ocean’s “Alabama” from the visual album Endless. If you’re an electronica fan and listened to a SBTRKT album, it’s Sampha’s voice you’ll hear throughout.

But now, like Ocean, Sampha has officially returned. He announced his much-anticipated debut LP Process Wednesday, a follow-up to his whimsical and confessional EP Dual. To mark his new album, Sampha released the album’s first single “Blood on Me” and it’s out via Young Turks. Though Sampha also dropped the single “Timmy’s Prayer” earlier this year, no word if it will be on the record or not.

Check out Sampha’s latest below. It doesn’t disappoint.

Sampha Lahai Sisay (born in 1988) is a British singer, songwriter, musician and record producer from Morden, South London.   Sampha has collaborated with Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Frank Ocean, SBTRKT, Jessie Ware, Travis Scott, Solange and others. Sampha has released two solo EPs: Sundanza (2010) and Dual (2013). Sampha’s debut album, Process, was released on 3 February 2017 by Young and won the 2017 Mercury Prize.
