Should You Believe Reports Of The First Cannabis Overdose

Thanks to a coroner’s diagnosis in Louisiana, the debate around THC overdoses has resumed once more in full force. Concern trolls like Danny Kannell have flocked in full force to point, emphatically, that marijuana has “side effects” of usage, while cannabis advocates have referenced empirical data and statistics to push back against such claims. So which is it — have we just witnessed the first recorded marijuana death in the United States or is something else going on here?

According to the New Orleans Advocate, coroner Christy Monegut diagnosed a 39-year-old woman, found dead in her apartment, as having died from vaping THC oil after viewing the woman’s toxicology reports.

“It looked like it was all THC because her autopsy showed no physical disease or afflictions that were the cause of death. There was nothing else identified in the toxicology—no other drugs, no alcohol,” Montegut told the Advocate. “There was nothing else.”

For the record, the National Institute of Drug Abuse — a federal government research institution — reports there’s never been an adult death due to THC. In addition, The National Center for Biotechnology Information, an offshoot of the National Institutes of Health, also said there’s been “no known cases of fatal overdose from cannabis use in the epidemiologic literature,” according to Newsweek.

In the original Advocate report, Keith Humphreys, the former senior policy adviser at the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, also pushed back against claims of marijuana overdose. Due to how much cannabis is consumed in the United States each year, we should see more cases of marijuana overdoses happening if consuming cannabis caused such a deadly reaction, even if the chances are only 1 in 1,000,000.

“We know from really good survey data that Americans use cannabis products billions of times a year, collectively. Not millions of times, but billions of times a year,” Humphreys told the Advocate. “So, that means that if the risk of death was one in a million, we would have a couple thousand cannabis overdose deaths a year.”

REPORTED: States With Legalized Marijuana Saw Increase In Traffic Deaths, Then Stark Dropoff

And while Montegut has asserted “100% certainty” in her assessment of marijuana overdose, Noah Kaufman, a Colorado-based emergency room doctor wasn’t so sure of such claims. Kaufman urged caution in using edibles or high-potency concentrates like shatter, but after viewing Montegut’s autopsy and toxicology report, he remained skeptical.

“Everything looked above the board, and the only thing they found was the THC in the blood and so they made an association,” Kaufman told 4WWL.

While we emphasize to new and old marijuana users alike to practice care and safety when using cannabis, especially any high-potency products as Kaufman mentioned, the evidence seems overwhelming that we don’t know the full story of how this Louisiana woman died. Otherwise, you’d have to believe one Louisiana coroner is correct in her assessment and federal institutions and doctors are wrong in theirs.

Meme Of The Week: SpongeBob Makes For The Most Relatable Cartoon Ever

SpongeBob is the king of internet memes, but this latest addition is particularly strange and delightful.

The gist of the meme is taking a screenshot of SpongeBob wearing an awkward outfit and tinkering with it so it can be used in multiple situations, like transforming SpongeBob into an emo tween listening to My Chemical Romance or making the character sport a Lana Del Rey wig. It’s all very niche.

RELATED: Meme Of The Week: ‘And I Oop’ Is The Internet’s New Favorite Expression

The original screenshot is taken from an old episode of the series, where SpongeBob and Patrick are dressed up as a damsel in distress and a robber respectively. SpongeBob’s make-up and awkward facial expression make for something weird and funny, which is why I guess the meme has been embraced so widely. There are mentions of the Catholic Church, an appearance from Villanelle from “Killing Eve” and a few specific references to “Game of Thrones” characters. The meme as a whole doesn’t make a lot of sense but it still works. Here are some of our favorites:

Khloe Kardashian Did The Unthinkable After Lamar Odom’s Near Fatal Overdose; Why Katy Perry Is Holding Off Planning Her Wedding

Katy Perry Has A Good Reason Why She’s Holding Off Planning Wedding To Orlando Bloom

Via Huffington Post:

Although Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom got engaged on Valentine’s Day after three years of being together, don’t expect them to rush to the altar anytime soon.

The singer told the hosts of “KISS Breakfast,” a morning radio show in Britain, that she and Bloom are taking their sweet time planning the wedding.

“One step at a time. Definitely trying to lay the good emotional foundation for the lifetime of commitment, which is like a big deal,” she said.

The couple has good reason to go slowly: Both were previously married, Perry to comedian Russell Brand, and Bloom to model Miranda Kerr, with whom he has a child.

While promoting his recently released memoir, Darkness to Light, on Real 92.3’s Big Boy’s Neighborhood radio show, the former NBA Player opened up about how his ex-wife nursed him back to health following his near-fatal overdose in 2015 even though they were separated (just days from being officially divorced) at the time.

“Thanks to that bad b*tch Khloe Kardashian. She helped nurse me back to life after that,” he shared, before revealing the great lengths the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star went to to ensure his wellbeing. “She helped wipe my a**. Made sure I knew who my mother was.”

Hackers May Soon Know What You’re Texting On Your Mobile Device

There are lots of reasons why many of us are paranoid abut technology. Does this sound familiar? You’re talking to your friend about a specific brand of shampoo and then suddenly there’s an ad for it in your Facebook and  Instagram feeds with a voucher waiting for us in our inboxes. Not creepy at all. There are new Alexa stories popping up every week, confirming that the device is listening in on households; that’s the way in which the AI learns how to make our lives more comfortable.

RELATED: Survey: Parents And Their Children Are Equally Addicted To Smartphones

This phenomenon of feeling observed and tracked, like you have a spy camera mounted on your body, has made people wonder what, exactly, the capabilities of technology. Well, here’s one more thing to worry about: A new study shows that hackers might be able to decode our texts and searches, albeit through an unexpected method.

The Wall Street Journal reports that it’s likely hackers will soon develop the ability to know what people tap on their phones by simply accessing the microphone on the phones of unsuspecting victims.

RELATED: Swan Song: Apple Is Finally Closing iTunes

A study conducted by Cornell University finds that the sound waves produced by Androids and tablets are capable of informing hackers where someone is tapping on their screen, giving the listeners complete access to the letters and numbers that are being introduced into the device. 27 out of 45 passwords on a phone and 19 out of 27 passwords on a tablet were recovered in the study, all thanks to the vibrations made by tapping.

Although researchers say that it’s still too early for this technology to be used in the mainstream, in the future, phone vibrations might become a serious security concern.

Why Marijuana Companies Are Rebranding Themselves As Health Care Companies

Investing in marijuana stocks isn’t a simple proposition. Guides can help lead you down the right path and it’s important to know what a cannabis company doe —tech? processing? distribution? — before investing. Even though marijuana has convinced millennials to buy stocks again, companies understand the stigma and volatility surrounding the market currently.

Which perhaps explain why two of the biggest marijuana companies in North America are rebranding themselves to potential investors. According to Barron’s, marijuana executives at Canopy Growth and Aurora Cannabis want investors to consider them alongside other health care stocks, not weed stocks.

Don’t forget that medical marijuana still drives a significant portion of their business, executives said to investors at a major health care conference put on by Jefferies, an investment bank.

“Our pedigree is as a medical cannabis company,” Aurora Chief Corporate Officer Cam Battley told Barron’s. “That opens doors for us on a global basis. When we need to meet with the top regulators or policy makers in country after country, that is incredibly helpful.”

Barron’s noted that marijuana company executive stood out against the crowd of health care businessmen and investors, emphasizing the casual in their business casual dress. But the marijuana guys didn’t back down from the competition, either. They have a place in the health care market, they argued, especially in helping patients where modern medicine cannot with ailments like chronic pain, anxiety, and bowel diseases.

“We see very clearly the largest economic opportunity over the next several years will be in the global medical cannabis sector,” Battley said.

Here’s When Meghan Markle Will Likely Make Her Next Public Appearance (It’s Sooner Than You Think)

UFC’s Jessica Eye On Why She Supports CBD Research On MMA Fighters

On Saturday, MMA fighter Jessica Eye will take on UFC women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 238 for the flyweight title. She’s considered a massive underdog — a role she has experienced throughout her life — and has even stated, “This is for the real people that count themselves out, this is for the people that you call losers.”

Ahead of the match, Eye was also asked about recent news that the UFC and Aurora Cannabis will partner to study the effects CBD has on athletes, both in mental wellness and recovery. Eye admitted to using CBD before every fight and when she does, she notices “such a better person in the ring with less anxiety.

“I’m a huge advocate of marijuana and CBD. My dad died from brain cancer—GMB, which is a very aggressive form of brain cancer,” Eye said. “But it’s something that marijuana helps and CBD is known to help. I would love to be able to change the image around using CBD.

“I’m a highly anxious person,” she added. “Using CBD makes me less anxious and gives me better self-belief because I’m able to control that jitteriness I get before the fight.”

The Aurora-UFC research on CBD will take place at the UFC’s Performance Institute in Las Vegas, Eye’s current resident city. The Performance Institute’s expert staff and any athletes that choose to do so will also participate in whatever studies that come out of the partnership’s research. Eye believes this research could be huge in changing stigmas around athletes using CBD and how the world views cannabinoids writ large.

“The more research we have the more the mass world believes. I know what I know because I research it and I spend the time doing it,” she said. “But let’s face it, the average world is not going to spend an hour to research something on their phone on something they don’t even know about it. Until they have a traumatic brain injury, then they’re going to realize—what outside Big Pharma can I do to help myself?”

Americans Spent As Much On Weed As Taco Bell

New data compiled by Marijuana Business Daily says that last year Americans spent $10.4 billion on legal cannabis, about the same amount of money that they spent on Taco Bell foods. To help you get some perspective, Taco Bell is the sixth-largest fast food chain in the country.

Are people buying weed and then stuffing themselves with Cheesy Gorditas? Seems plausible.

RELATED: A Simple Guide To Making An Investment In Marijuana Stocks

The 10.4 billion earned in 2018 are made up of the medical and recreational cannabis sales, a figure that has grown over the years and that’s expected to go even further. Last year cannabis managed to outsell some of the most discussed brands, like the Fortnite video game and the e-cigarette industry. By 2020, stats suggest that the cannabis industry could rival the revenue income of the NFL.

Black market marijuana is assumed to be valued at $50 or $60 billion, a number that is nearly on par with the wine industry, valued at $72 billion. If the plant were to be legalized and taxed the country’s economic boom would be huge.

While legal cannabis has not met expectations in California, one of the US’s biggest markets, state sales predict that the industry will grow as the plant earns its legal status in more states and continues to employ more people and develop new and inventive products.

4 Ways On How To Use Raw Cannabis Leaves

Trimming and pruning days are something West Coast home growers and hobby cannabis cultivators know all about. Before buds are allowed to get big in their final push, excess leaves must be removed from the plant in a strategic way. Having a big pile of these live green leaves should be more than waste to toss—they’re rich in nutrition and a great way to experiment with the plant outside of getting high.

Raw green cannabis leaves have lots to offer you culinarily. Like many other bitter greens, they need a creative hand and knowledge of harnessing strong flavors in a dish. Pairing them with things like garlic, ginger, or pungent green herbs such as basil are some base techniques, but here’s some strategies and recipes for using up those raw leaves when they come around.

Tiger Salad

We’ve made this Xi’an Foods dupe before, but not with this non-THC aspect of cannabis: its leaves. Tiger salad like the Xi’an version involves simple but show stopping cilantro and Chinese celery for a good fit with vegetal hemp leaves, just keep it at a lower ratio to avoid upsetting the delicate herbal to celery balance.

Places like Mission Chinese employ bold combos like ginger, mint, basil, cilantro and scallions in their version of Tiger Salad. It’s a supreme spot to stash some torn cannabis leaves for a fusion flavor.

Raw Pineapple Juice

Stomping out a cold requires you to hit your system with everything you’ve got, nutrient wise. Better than talking a tablet, adding foods high in vitamin c, b12, a, and d are a worthy plan of attack. Adding a handful of green cannabis leaves to a raw ginger lemon pineapple concoction supercharges the already assaulting juice with even more of these vitamins for a solid plan of attack.

Roasted Greens

Like kale before it, greens are back on the menu at many places where salads and buttery sides were the chief veg offering. Simply tossing any bitter greens with a quality olive oil and some salt, pepper, garlic and shallot before roasting for a bit is not only upping the beauty of your dinner, it’s adding critical fiber and nutrients. Cook up kale or collards with cannabis leaves in a 2:1 ratio for a new twist on a simple and satisfying classic.

Herbed Crackers

The taste of herb can be best aided by more herbs. Chopping up some rosemary, cannabis, thyme, and tarragon to use in baked crackers will make an elevated design without getting anyone elevated. Enjoy with cheeses, fermented foods, and anything you would put on a charcuterie plate. Saving a few seven pointed leaves for garnish is not a bad idea.

If you can grow a plant just for the leaves, it’s a unique way to get a little extra veg into your diet, and it’s a beautifully decorative plant too. If you learn to do it right, you’ll have both leaves and buds, a dank investment.

Can I Become A Police Officer If I’ve Smoked Marijuana

0

There was once a time when a person with a history of marijuana use was automatically disqualified from the hiring pool if they set out to become a police officer. It just didn’t make sense to put former stoners in the big blue suit and unleash them into the streets to crack the skulls of their previous drug dealers. In a lot of ways, this is still the status quo.

Most police forces are still doing their best to avoid recruits that have a history of cannabis consumption. But in some parts of the country, law enforcement agencies are taking a more lenient stance on past drug use. It’s either that or watch lawlessness unfold while good men and women remain unemployed.

Utah is one of the latest states to change the rules to some degree regarding law enforcement applicants that have smoked weed. Although candidates are still required to reveal any past marijuana use, the information they divulge during the hiring process might not weaken their chances at getting the job.

But Utah’s police force is still not ready to give the average high timer a badge and a gun.

RELATED: Survey: Police Officers Nationwide Want Marijuana Laws Relaxed

Only the medicinal use of cannabis is something that the agency is prepared to embrace. In the interest of accountability, candidates must list the specific medical cannabis products they have used in the past. As long as those products are fit for consumption under the guidelines maintained by the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food, applicants “are not required to have a two-year wait to enter the academy,” Major Scott Stephenson, who oversees the state’s police academy, told the Salt Lake Tribune.

All marijuana use, he added, will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

In other parts of the country, past cannabis use is no longer a disqualifier for police candidates. In 2018, the Chicago Police Department, which is the second largest police force in the country, revealed that it was no longer scratching applicants with a history of marijuana use. It’s not that the force is looking to hire cops that were high just last week, but people who may have experimented with the herb in their youth are no longer being turned away. The change came just a couple of years after former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel said he was open to police recruits that may have been convicted of a minor drug offense. Interestingly, this policy may become even less restrictive in the future. Illinois just became the 11th state to legalize marijuana for recreational use.

RELATED: Police Field Tests Can’t Distinguish Between Hemp And Marijuana

Other jurisdictions are taking a similar approach to recruiting police officers with a pot-past. Maryland will allow a prospective officer to have smoked weed within the past three years. This is a considerable change from the time when the admission of regular cannabis use after the age of 21 was an automatic disqualifier. “It gives us a greater pool of police applicants to consider as we are at a very critical time in our profession’s history and we want to identify the right people,” said former Baltimore Police Commissioner Kevin Davis.

Atlanta is another city that has moved in this direction. As long as a candidate hasn’t smoked marijuana in the past two years, they are good to go. Police agencies in parts of Colorado have progressed, as well.

All of these changes are taking place as a result of America’s increasing cop shortage. All across the country applications to become a police officer are down.

Even the FBI has eased its drug policy in recent years to widen the recruitment pool. Applicants that are weed free for three years are still given consideration. The Secret Service is another agency that has amended its stance on weed.

The pot policies of law enforcement in America will undoubtedly become more relaxed each year as more of the United States moves toward legal weed. This will be even more true once the federal government legalizes nationwide. At that point, even Tommy Chong has a fighting chance at going on patrol.
