5 Unconventional Habits For A Healthy Relationship

0

Our obsession with love is so intense that we’ve molded popular culture around it. Love is the main topic in movies, songs, books and conversations with friends and family. It’s also responsible for the multi-million dollar dating app industry.

This stronghold on the topic has influenced the way in which we view love, creating unrealistic expectations and ideals. While having someone who understands you on an intimate level feels very nice, it’s not magic; it can’t make you happy and it can’t heal your problems.

We scoured the internet to find some of the most unconventional, yet healthy relationship habits we could find. Here are 5 of the most useful ones.

Feeling attraction to people outside of the relationship

RELATED: 5 Reasons Why People In A Committed Relationship Might Cheat

Our culture has this hilariously unrealistic attitude when it comes to people outside of our relationship, expecting that once you’re with someone, other people will stop existing. We all know this isn’t true. And it’s not healthy. Self-help author Mark Manson says that suppressing these feelings causes tremendous guilt and makes people act irrationally, being more likely to cheat on their partners. He writes: “When you suppress these feelings, you give them power over you, you let them dictate your behavior for you (suppression) rather than dictating your behavior for yourself (feeling them and yet choosing not to do anything).”

Instead of thinking and torturing yourself over how attracted you are to someone, just admit it to yourself. Think about all the reasons why you love your partner and let it go. Like most things, your attraction will pass and you will be fine.

Establishing boundaries

While being in a relationship means that you spend most of the time together, you should have your own space to enjoy the things you want to do alone. Maybe your partner doesn’t like one TV show and you do. Make compromises and communicate, letting the other know that you want to do this while they can go ahead and do that thing that you don’t find particularly enjoyable. Hobbies, separate friends, even solo trips should be considered when it comes to reacquainting yourself with you.

Letting conflicts go

https://giphy.com/gifs/vh1-jesus-big-ang-YmhXe0t346waA

While many psychologists and relationship experts express how important communication is, it’s also important to learn how to let things go. While the big arguments should be solved, the little ones, which can lead to awful fights and hurt feelings, can be ignored. Conflict is part of the deal; the best thing you can do for your relationship is realizing that there will be things that bug you and that you’ll still have to get over.

Having realistic expectations about love

While love and intimacy are great, it’s important to know that passion and butterflies in your stomach are not symptoms that will stay there forever. Quartz reports that the most successful couples understand that their relationships aren’t fairy tales and that being with someone for long periods of time takes dedication and hard work. “Many people never learn how to breach this deep, unconditional love. Many people are instead addicted to the ups and downs of romantic love. They are in it for the feels, so to speak. And when the feels run out, so do they,” explains the article.

Letting go of the relationship if it’s not working

https://giphy.com/gifs/bye-actress-pitch-perfect-eQyPiQGIkaQSI

This is kind of hard to explain, especially when it follows a paragraph detailing why real love isn’t a fairytale, but it’s an important point to stress over. Expecting that your partner will be there no matter what happens and what you do puts an unfair strain on your relationship. It’s also very harmful; if a relationship isn’t working, if you’re unhappy and don’t know why you’re still holding on, you should be strong enough to end it and to prioritize your own happiness and health.

NFL Agrees To Study Marijuana As Pain Management Tool

As part of effort to study “a variety of pain-management issues and strategies for players,” the National Football League and the NFL Player’s Association have agreed to form two new joint medical committees, with a particular focus on marijuana as a pain management tool. This move could represent a potential shift in the NFL’s long-held taboo around cannabis, reports Mark Maske of The Washington Post.

The news is revealing ahead of the two sides engaging in upcoming Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations. Previous reports have indicated the NFL would be willing to make concessions around marijuana in the CBA, and this latest move could be a step toward that goal.

While 10 states have legalized cannabis for adult use and 33 states for medicinal purposes, marijuana remains a banned substance in the NFL. Players still undergo marijuana testing and receive suspension if those tests prove positive. Though these two new committees are not solely focused on marijuana, their goal “will include a review of teams’ policies and practices for the use of prescription medication by players,” according to the Post.

The committees will each focus on different areas of research: one for pain management and the other for mental health and wellness. A prescription drug monitoring program will provide the pain management committee with reports “that will monitor all prescriptions issued to NFL players by club physicians and unaffiliated physicians.” This practice, according to the league’s chief medical officer, Allen Sills, is “happening throughout medicine, not just in the NFL.”

“We’re asking our pain management committee to bring us any and all suggestions,” Sills told the Washington Post. “We’ll look at marijuana.”

More former players in recent years have been outspoken about the league’s need to engage in honest dialogue around medical marijuana. Former superstar receiver Calvin Johnson, who is a “true believer” in cannabis,” is now entering the marijuana business with his former teammate Robert Sims. Meanwhile, former running back Tiki Barber recently launched an investment firm that guides marijuana startups through the tricky legal requirements of the young cannabis industry. He told FOX Business the NFL’s marijuana drug tests were notoriously easy to beat.

Still, any official changes to the league’s drug policy will have to go through official channels, like the CBA, which will expire following the 2020 season.

Landmark Study Shows CBD Could Treat Heroin Addiction

Prior research has pointed to marijuana’s ability to treat addiction in myriad ways. Not only have previous studies shown how cannabis can be an exit drugs from opioids, it’s also been proven effective in treating cocaine addiction and alcoholism. Perhaps this explains why consumers are replacing their prescription pills with cannabis, including those taking anti-anxiety meds.

A new study out this week demonstrated that CBD, the non-psychoactive cannabinoid in marijuana and hemp, could assist those with opioid addiction. When given to patients with heroin addiction, CBD helped them experience less cravings when compared to those participants given a placebo. The CBD was also effective in making patients feel more at ease and lessen anxiety symptoms.

“The specific effects of CBD on cue-induced drug craving and anxiety are particularly important in the development of addiction therapeutics because environmental cues are one of the strongest triggers for relapse and continued drug use,” the study’s lead researcher and the Addiction Institute of Mount Sinai director Yasmin Hurd said in a press release.

The study, published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, was a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 42 men with known heroin addictions, but weren’t taking methadone or buprenorphine, two substances known to treat opioid addiction. None of these men were taking heroin or opioids at the time, and randomly divided into three groups—one collective taking pills containing 800 mg CBD, another with 400 mg CBD pills, and finally a placebo group.

Over the course of two weeks, individuals were shown various images that would test their potential cravings and overall mood. Some media participants saw included nature videos while other pictures shown were associated with drug use, like needles or packets filled with substances resembling heroin. Afterwards, individuals were asked to rate their heroin cravings, as well as their anxiety levels.

The groups that had taken CBD reported less cravings and anxiety on average compared to the placebo group, though the difference between the two CBD groups was insignificant. In addition, more objective measurements like heart rate and cortisol levels in saliva (which can be used to evaluate acute stress) were also down.

“Our findings indicate that CBD holds significant promise for treating individuals with heroin use disorder,” Dr. Hurd said. “A successful non-opioid medication would add significantly to the existing addiction medication toolbox to help reduce the growing death toll, enormous health care costs, and treatment limitations imposed by stringent government regulations amid this persistent opioid epidemic.”

While the authors caution this is an “exploratory” study, the scientific community remains encouraged by the results. To continue their findings, Dr. Hurd and her team will next explore CBD’s effects on the brain and the second will focus on more specific CBD formulas to treating opioid addiction.

5 Videos Of Cute Animals To Get You Through The Week: May 20

There’s no better pick-me-up than the one you get when you see a clip of an animal acting silly, which is why we’ve compiled this weekly column. These short videos feature all sorts of animals, providing you with that much needed rush of endorphins.

This week’s column features a dog model wearing a flower crown, a pug looking romantically at the camera, a couple of gorillas hiding from the rain, and different types of kittens. Very wholesome, very positive. Check them out below:

A dog who models

No one likes to get wet when it rains, least of all these gorillas, who are unable to hide how much they hate it. At first, they seem content with hiding under the small roof, but then, as the first brave gorilla takes the plunge and inspires the rest to follow suit, you can tell how much they regret it.

Foster kitties

While Sphinx cats are not everyone’s cup of tea, there’s no way you don’t feel anything when you see this tiny kitten who can barely keep its head up. Look at its ears! Listen to its mews!

Alabama Senator Tells Cancer Patients To Buy Marijuana On The Streets

Creating situations where Alabamans must jeopardize their safety to receive the medical treatment they need, appears to be Sen. Jim McClendon’s modus operandi.

You shouldn’t expect an Alabaman politician who voted in favor of the state’s deeply unpopular anti-abortion law to also have the clearest elucidations on cannabis. Yet you can still be stunned, as we are, by what State Sen. Jim McClendon used as reasoning not to support Alabama’s current proposed medical marijuana legislation.

In an interview with the Matt & Aunie program on Birmingham’s Talk 99.5 radio station, the hosts asked McClendon his reasoning behind voting against the medical marijuana bill. His reasoning resembled those conservatives have made in Texas as well, stating any loosening of the law will eventually lead to full-blown recreational cannabis reform.

“I guess what bothers me as much as anything is I know what we’re doing is, some time along the way we are going to open a door that will eventually lead to recreational marijuana,” McClendon said. “I figure as long as I can kind of push against that door the better it will be.”

But it’s what McClendon said regarding access to marijuana that proves shocking. When Matt Murphy, one of the two radio hosts, suggested that cannabis was already in his district and that meeting with cancer patients helped by medical marijuana, McClendon was nonplussed. His stance—if they can get marijuana, why should I legalize it?

“Well if there is someone that needs it, let’s say there is someone doing the cancer treatment, they have nausea problems and they need something to control it, they can get it!” McClendon said.

Andrea Lindenberg, the other program host, was frustrated and pushed back. McClendon’s views was forcing normally law-abiding citizens suffering from cancer into becoming criminals. In fact, they were potentially risking their lives with whatever product they can get on the streets, which could be mixed with a deadly dose of fentanyl.

“They’re not too worried about that,” McClendon dismissed.

Again, maybe this shouldn’t be all that startling. Thwarting the safety of his constituency, creating situations where Alabamans must jeopardize their safety to receive the medical treatment they need, appears to be McClendon’s modus operandi. Maybe he can find a better sense of honor on the streets.

Meghan Markle Asked TV Host To Set Her Up With ‘Famous’ English Men Before Prince Harry; Mel B Slams Reports That Claim She Has Herpes

Meghan Markle asked British TV host to set her up with ‘famous’ English men before dating Prince Harry

Via The Sun:

Before she met Prince Harry, Meghan Markle asked a British TV host to set her up with famous English men.

Lizzie Cundy struck up a friendship with Markle, now 37, in 2013 when they attended a charity dinner together, but Cundy says that Duchess Meghan ghosted her once she and the Ginger Prince went public with their relationship in 2016.

“We were having a girly chat and then she said, ‘Do you know any famous guys? I’m single and I really love English men’. So I said, ‘We’ll go out and find you someone,’ ” Cundy recalled in her memoir, “Tales From The Red Carpet” (via The Sun).

Cundy, who hung out with the Duchess at the Global Gift Gala in London in November 2013, says she showed Meghan — who had divorced first husband Trevor Engelson months before her trip to London — a photo of soccer star Ashley Cole.

Mel B Went Temporarily Blind, But Slams The Report That It’s Due To Herpes

Via The Sun:

Mel B says that yes, it’s true that her vision is going through it, but it doesn’t seem like it’s because of Coachella’s #1 parting gift: herpes. And the Spice Girls (Minus Posh) reunion tour will go on!

Mel B said in 2014 that she’s blind in her left eye after a laser surgery she had 15 years before went wrong (Mel B said then that she was planning to get a cornea transplant hoping that would help, but I’m not sure if that happened or not).

The Sun originally claimed she went temporarily blind because of eye herpes. A source said that Mel B went to the eye hospital in London, and wanted us to know that she didn’t drive herself.

“Mel was in a really bad way. The other girls and their managers were really worried. Mel was frantic and screaming that she couldn’t see a thing. She went to the hospital in a chauffeur-driven car with an assistant, who was holding her hand. No one knew what brought it on but she had very swift, and very good, treatment. It is unclear if the loss of vision is linked to her previous problems, although it does seem likely.”

The Sun said that after she was treated, she immediately went back to rehearsals even though doctors told her not to.

Why Are So Many Of Our Pets Fat?

When I looked at my appointment book for the day, I thought something must be wrong. Someone who worked in the fitness industry was bringing his cat in to the Tufts Obesity Clinic for Animals. Did he confuse us for a different kind of weight management clinic? Is he looking to get muscle on his cat or maybe kitty protein shakes?

I was utterly surprised when I called for my appointment in the lobby and an athletic man stood up with an almost 20-pound cat! I asked if I could speak bluntly with him. Why does someone who clearly knows a lot about keeping healthy need to bring his cat to a veterinary nutritionist? What would he say if the cat was one of the people he helps to keep fit every day? Our conversation then went something like this…

“Well, I’d tell her, suck it up, buttercup. Do some kitty pushups and no more treats!”

“Well, I have to ask, then, what’s stopping you from doing this with your cat?”

With a worried look of guilt on his face, he replied, “Well, Dr. Linder, I mean… she meows at me…”

This was the moment I realized that I was treating pet obesity all wrong. I needed to focus less on the pet and more on the relationship between people and their pets. That’s what’s literally cutting the lives short of the dogs and cats we love so much.

An obese pet isn’t a happy pet

As with humans, obesity in pets is at epidemic proportions. Over half of the dogs and cats around the globe battle the bulge.

While overweight pets may not face the same social stigma as humans, medical and emotional damage is being done all the same. Obesity in animals can cause complications in almost every system in the body, with conditions ranging from diabetes to osteoarthritis.

RELATED: Did Meghan Markle Really Name Her Son After Her Beloved Fat Cat?

Owners often say they don’t care if their pet is “fat” – there’s just more of them to love! It’s my job to then let them know there’s less time to provide that love. A landmark lifespan study showed Labradors who were 10-20 percent overweight – not even obese, which is typically defined as greater than 20 percent – lived a median 1.8 years shorter than their trim ideal weight counterparts.

Another study shows that obesity indeed has emotional consequences for pets. Overweight pets have worse scores in vitality, quality of life, pain and emotional disturbance. However, the good news is those values can improve with weight loss.

Furthermore, humans struggle to succeed even in the best conditions – and so do pets. In one study, dogs on a weight-loss program were only successful 63 percent of the time.

Showing love through food

So where exactly is the problem? Are foods too high in calories? Are pets not getting enough exercise? Is it genetics? Or do we just fall for those puppy dog eyes and overfeed them because they have in fact trained us (not the other way around!)? From my experience at the pet obesity clinic, I can tell you it’s a bit of all of the above.

It seems veterinarians and pet owners may be a little behind the curve compared to our human counterparts. Studies show that it doesn’t really matter what approach to weight loss most humans take – as long as they stick to it. But many in veterinary medicine focus more on traditional diet and exercise plans, and less on adherence or the reason these pets may have become obese to begin with. (This should be easy, right? The dogs aren’t opening the fridge door themselves!)

RELATED: Ask A Vet: How Old Is My Pet In Dog Or Cat Years?

However, the field is starting to understand that pet obesity is much more about the human-animal bond than the food bowl. In 2014, I worked among a group of fellow pet obesity experts organized by the American Animal Hospital Association to publish new weight management guidelines, recognizing that the human-animal bond needs to be addressed. Is the pet owner ready to make changes and overcome challenges that might slow down their pet’s weight loss?

One interesting editorial review compared parenting styles to pet ownership. As pet owners, we treat our cats and dogs more like family members. There’s a deeper emotional and psychological bond that was not as common when the family dog was just the family dog. If vets can spot an overindulgent pet parent, perhaps we can help them develop strategies to avoid expressing love through food.

A healthier relationship

Managing obesity in pets will require veterinarians, physicians and psychologists to work together.

Many veterinary schools and hospitals now employ social workers who help veterinarians understand the social aspect of the human-animal bond and how it impacts the pet’s care. For example, a dog owner who has lost a spouse and shares an ice cream treat every night with their dog may be trying to replace a tradition they used to cherish with their significant other. A social worker with a psychology background could help prepare a plan that respects the owner’s bond with their pet without negatively impacting the pet’s health.

At our obesity clinic at Tufts, physicians, nutritionists and veterinarians are working together to develop joint pet and pet owner weight-loss programs. We want to put together a healthy physical activity program, so pet owners and their dogs can both improve their health and strengthen their bond. We also created a pet owner education website with additional strategies for weight loss and pet nutrition.

Programs that strengthen and support the human-animal bond without adding calories will be critical to preserve the loving relationship that is the reason why we adopt our pets, but also keep us from literally loving them to death by overfeeding. Hopefully, we can start to chip away at the notion that “food is love” for our pets. The Conversation

Suicide Numbers Dropped In California After Marijuana Legalization

For those critical of and against cannabis reform, a reliable worry revolved around potential increases in suicide behavior following widespread marijuana legalization. This was of particular concern when considering those afflicted with psychiatric disorders. Last year, researchers at McMaster University in Canada released a study last year that repudiated such claims, finding “no clear link between cannabis and suicide attempts.” In fact, suicide numbers dropped in california after marijuana legalization.

Now, a new study published this May in Archives of Suicide Research discovered that the total number of suicides in California each year declined following medical marijuana legalization, including gun-assisted suicides. According to the University of California-Irvine scientists behind the study, “findings reveal that rates of total suicide and gun suicide dropped significantly in the aftermath of Proposition 215.”

Suicide rates have risen 30% nationally over the past 15 years, as Democratic presidential candidate Amy Klobuchar said at a recent FOX News town hall. That time frame roughly equates to when states began legalizing medical marijuana across the country.

RELATED: Study: Opioid Abuse Linked To Higher Suicide Rates For Veterans

“The systematic evidence connecting this trend to the availability of medical marijuana is ambiguous, however,” the research team wrote, according to Marijuana Moment.

To conduct the study, the UC-Irvine team collated the number of total, gun and non-gun suicides between 1970-2004. In an effort to understand what those figures would look like if California hadn’t legalized medical marijuana, the team compared the California statistics to the 41 states that didn’t have any medical marijuana program during that time frame.

“In particular, for all suicides, our results demonstrate that California’s 1996 intervention led to an average reduction of 398.9 suicides per year and a cumulative reduction of approximately 3,191 suicides during 1997-2004,” the study found. “Similarly, legalization led to a reduction in gun suicides of 208 per year on average and a cumulative reduction of approximately 1,668 fewer gun suicides during 1997-2004.”

So why did cannabis have this effect on California’s suicide numbers? The most direct conclusion scientists learned regarded federal regulations blocking any citizen who use a federally illegal controlled substance like cannabis from obtaining firearms. Accessing medical marijuana might have discouraged potential victims from committing suicides as a result, considering many suicides involves guns.

The study’s authors also suggested that medical marijuana could help with the symptoms that can lead to suicidal behavior, including mental illness. Previous studies have shown how cannabis can help patients get off their anti-anxiety medications, and treat stress-induced depression.

RELATED: Does Legalizing Marijuana Help Or Harm Americans? Weighing The Statistical Evidence

In addition, researchers added the decline in suicide numbers might involve alcoholic use disorder. Those suffering from the disorder raise their risk of suicide, but replacing that alcohol use with marijuana could help.

“If marijuana and alcohol use are combined, one might expect no change in suicide risk or even an increase in suicide following legalization,” the authors wrote. “If marijuana replaces alcohol, on the other hand, one might expect a decrease in suicide risk following legalization.”

However, such explanations remain inconclusive at the moment. Should further research interrogate such theories, perhaps it “may reveal insight into why we do not find the expected reduction in non-gun suicides following legalization.” Until then, linking marijuana legalization with rising suicide rates should perhaps be discouraged.

How Rising Levels Of Anxiety In Teens Might Support The Rise Of CBD

People have never been more transparent about their mental health issues than they are today. And encouragement from a variety of sources — clothing brands, restaurants, apps and more — have made us all aware of mental health diseases that were previously kept under wraps. What previous generations deemed as private have now become a source of unending memes.

People below the age of 30 are reaping the benefits of this culture while also coming forward with their own stories of mental health. Stats and data show that anxiety and stress levels in teens are on the rise, perhaps because they’re encouraged to report these feelings. These stats are interesting when you consider that alcohol consumption, underage sex and cigarette use have been steadily decreasing.

RELATED: The Only CBD User’s Manual You Need

Per the CDC:

  • The percentage of students who’ve tried alcohol is down 26% since 1991.
  • The percentage who’ve tried cigarettes is down 41%.
  • The percentage who were offered, sold or given illegal drugs at school is down 17.5%.
  • The percentage who’ve had sex is down 27%.

Although teens are engaging in less risky activities, they have more than enough reasons to be stressed. Mass school shootings, climate change, uncertain politics, and an awakening of feminist and queer ideologies are all factors that teens are reckoning with, to degrees that older generations can’t understand.

While finding a cure for this wave of mental health issues is extremely hard, understanding why this is happening can help us see why the term“wellness” has been so heavily utilized lately. Teens are growing into adults who are very aware of their mental impairments and the issues they’ve faced in the past.

While CBD is new and unpredictable, its focus on wellness is paying off. Businesses that range from Burger King to Hulu are stepping in on the wellness trend too, suggesting that this is the way to get people to purchase your product. While the voraciousness with which CBD has been embraced might suggest that it’s a fad, it is still a product that could surprise us. At the end of the day, it bridges two timely topics: wellness and cannabis.
