This Week’s Music: Gracey, Adam Lambert And Halsey

This Week’s Music is a weekly column that discusses the week’s best, worst, and most interesting songs. We try to select songs of different artists and genres to keep things interesting and to please a variety of music fans.

This week’s column features Gracey’s new song, Adam Lambert’s last music video and Halsey’s first solo single of the year. Check them out!

Indie

Gracey – If You Loved Me

“If You Loved Me” is a surprising single, one that shows off Gracey’s vocals but not much else until you give the song a few tries. Behind a somewhat predictable pop break-up song there’s a level of intensity and lyrical depth. Although that lone is not enough to elevate “If You Loved Me” into a great song, it does suggest that the 21 year old singer songwriter has an exciting career ahead.

Adam Lambert – New Eyes

“New Eyes” is the lead single for “Velvet,” Adam Lambert’s upcoming fourth studio album. It’s an interesting song with a catchy chorus and Lambert’s traditionally powerful vocals, yet the most notable thing about it is its restraint. Lambert has always had a gorgeous voice and an interest in old school rock, something that has separated him from his contemporaries. Still, his solo work never gives him enough room to take advantage of all that makes him so unique.

Halsey – Nightmare

Halsey has had a big year, with plenty of appearances on awards shows and more, so it’s surprising that “Nightmare” is her first solo song released in 2019. With a music video loaded with references, an appearance from Cara Delevinge and an angry and political message, Halsey’s intent is clear, and it’s a valuable one. Blurring the lines between pop, rock and hip hop, the single sets a charged mood for her upcoming work. Although “Nightmare” is not my favorite song of hers, it makes me wonder what she’s planning on doing next.

‘He Stole My Thunder!’ Says Hollywood A-Lister Who Shares Birthday With Baby Sussex

George Clooney may not be a likely candidate for godparent to Baby Sussex, but he has the next best thing: He shares a birthday with him.

Archie Mountbatten-Windsor was born on May 6, the same day Clooney was born, albeit 58 years earlier.

“He stole my thunder,” Clooney said during an appearance on the British talkshow Lorraine on Wednesday. “That kid stole my thunder!”

The day after baby Archie was born, amid a bunch of hoopla, Clooney stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! and told the host that his birthday was celebrated quite differently. He said he “got nothing” for his birthday, and spent a quiet night at home with his wife, Amal.

Dogs Of Instagram: Welsh Corgi

If you follow the Royals, likely you follow their Corgis. Originating in Wales, the Welsh Corgi has been linked to the British Royals for centuries. Queen Elizabeth II, Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret, and Prince Albert all had Corgis. The happy-go-lucky Corgi sits low to the ground, but has sturdy, muscular features. Weighing up to 30 pounds, it’s a big dog in a small dog’s body. The Welsh Corgis are funny, playful and sensitive family dogs.

Here, we recognize six regal Corgis of Instagram.

Austria Warns People Against Kissing Cows

The Austrian government issued a statement warning people against kissing cows. Why? Because there’s a “Cow Kiss Challenge.” The government’s message was clear: Don’t be dumb. Don’t do it.

Per The Guardian, the KuhKussChallenge, a term that sounds a little nicer than the English translation, first appeared on the web May 15. It was launched by an app called Castl, urging people from Switzerland and other German-speaking countries to seek cows and kiss them “with or without tongue” in order to raise money for a charity. There’s not a shred of common sense here.

The Austrian agriculture minister, Elisabeth Köstinger, said in a statement:

“Pastures and meadows are not petting zoos – actions like these could have serious consequences.”

You don’t say?

While the charity isn’t specified, it does explain how balancing tourist activity with cattle farming is a complicated issue for Austria, especially in the areas where there’s a lot of mountains and interaction between the two. The country’s economy is heavily influenced by tourists and the business they make in their farms. Still.

One part of a cow’s personality is sociability, which means that within a herd, some cows may be more gregarious characters than others. In general, cows are social, herd animals, and so a level of friendliness and cooperation amongst themselves is essential to their survival.

There has been some fear surrounding cows and their perceived lack of friendliness due to a few isolated cases of people fatally trampled by a herd. These instances are rare and almost always have to do with dogs, who tend to make cows feel threatened. Bulls can be more aggressive and should be avoided. When cows have calves during the spring months, some caution is warranted, as their maternal instinct can manifest in aggression. Still, cows are generally friendly and approachable animals. People who engage in healthy relationships with cows are rewarded and impressed by their sensitivity, friendliness, and intelligence.

Baby Sussex Birth Certificate Has Revealing Side Note

Big news around the palace. The official birth certificate of the new royal baby, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, has been released for the world to see. That’s great and all, but did you see what his mom listed as her occupation?

Meghan Markle used her full name on the birth certificate: Rachel Meghan Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex. But in the “occupation” box, Meghan is referred to as “Princess of the United Kingdom.”

When Meghan and Harry’s in-laws, Prince William and Kate Middleton, welcomed Prince Louis last year, his birth certificate listed him as “His Royal Highness Prince Louis Arthur Charles of Cambridge.” Kate and William were referred to as “His Royal Highness Prince William Arthur Philip Louis Duke of Cambridge” and “Catherine Elizabeth Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge.” Although Kate and Meghan use the title of Duchess, they are also princesses by default, since both of their husbands are princes.

RELATED: This Is Why Kate Middleton And Meghan Markle Are Not Called ‘Princess’

According to the Daily Express, the reason that Kate isn’t known as “Her Royal Highness Princess Catherine” is probably the same reason Meghan isn’t: It’s not the highest ranking title. Just like “prince” isn’t always the highest title for a man of the monarchy.

Take Princess Diana for instance. When she married Prince Charles, she became known as Diana, Princess of Wales, because Charles in the head of a principality —  Wales —  unlike his son, Prince William. Instead, William was made Duke of Cambridge when he married Kate, which is a higher rank that many price or princess titles (such as Princess Eugenie, the daughter of Prince Andrew, who is not higher ranking that Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge).

“Every wife of a prince is a princess regardless of how she is styled,” royal historian and Royal Musings founder Marlene Koenig tells BAZAAR.com.

“William is styled as the Duke of Cambridge but he has not stopped being a prince because he is a grandson of the sovereign in the male line. He is styled as Duke of Cambridge for now. Same for Harry, as Duke of Sussex.”

It’s a little confusing, for the same reason baby Archie is known as “Master” and not “Earl of Dumbarton”, which he is entitled to. No wonder members of the royal family don’t use last names. They have enough already.

Poll Shows Least Popular Female Royal

If you had to pick your favorite royal, who would it be? (We see you taking those £20 out of our pocket, George!) In theory, you might think it would be a heated race between new parents Meghan and Harry. But a new poll says otherwise.

The most popular royal in the 2019 Opinium Monarchy Tracker survey of 2,003 U.K. adults was Prince William with a 73% rating. That, my friends, is called a landslide. Even with rumors of a reported affair with his wife’s close friend circulating, his numbers are still fierce.

Will’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, has a 70% approval rating, with his wife trailing 8 points with 62%. Will’s Brother Harry also scored 70% or higher.

And now, here’s the awkward part: Kate Middleton’s reported rival Meghan Markle only has a 39% approval rating. Yet, she is still ranked above the least liked royal. And whom might that be? Who do you think?

It’ Camilla Parker Bowles, the second wife of Prince Charles. She scored a measly 24% approval rating. Ouch.

We can all guess why the general public doesn’t love Camilla. She was, after all, the “other woman” while Charles was married to the beloved Princess Diana. Some say Camilla will never live up to the elegance and inner beauty of the late Princess Di.

Kate Middleton’s high ranking isn’t surprising, either, seeing as how she’s raised three young children in the spotlight, while carrying herself with grace and professionalism. and as mentioned, she’s dealing with a potential cheating husband. And everyone likes to  sympathize with a person who’s been betrayed.

Meghan, on the other hand, is considered a spoiled Hollywood actress by some. And her public family drama, including close relatives attempting to smear her good reputation, doesn’t help matters. It’s also been reported that she’s unliked by palace staffers, considered a diva who doesn’t belong. She’s also made a name for herself as someone who eschews royal protocol. And let’s not forget she’s a biracial divorcee. Some people just do not have an open mind about these things, especially when it comes to someone in power.

But, hey, cheer up Megs. At least you’re not Camilla.

Meme Of The Week: The Amount Of Democrats Running For President Is So High That It Became A Meme

Politics are crazy. This is a known fact, reflected by the headlines of the country’s biggest news outlets and our reactions to how culture and media are processing it all.

The latest existential crisis in a year that’s been filled with them was triggered by the amount of Democrats currently running for President. This is sweet because it shows that politicians are interested in providing help and ushering in change, but it’s also not because they need to calm down.

Author Morgan Jerkins posted a tweet that quickly went viral, asking her followers if they knew all the names of the 22 Democrats who had announced their candidacy for 2020.

Joe Biden Realizes Anti-Marijuana Stance Is Politically Toxic, Now Supports Decriminalization

Well it only took a month of criticisms for Joe Biden to change his tune on cannabis reform. The presidential nominee announced this week that he supports marijuana decriminalization, but he wouldn’t go so far as to support legalization at a federal level. The former vice president believes the question of legalization should be left to the states.

Biden first signaled his evolution in cannabis reform during a house party in New Hampshire Tuesday. It was there he told voters, “Nobody should be in jail for smoking marijuana.”

Those comments were further expanded in a statement Biden’s spokesman released to news media Thursday.

“As he said [Tuesday], Vice President Biden does not believe anyone should be in jail simply for smoking or possessing marijuana. He supports decriminalizing marijuana and automatically expunging prior criminal records for marijuana possession, so those affected don’t have to figure out how to petition for it or pay for a lawyer,” Biden campaign spokesperson Andrew Bates said in a statement to CNN.

Bates also added that Biden “would allow states to continue to make their own choices regarding legalization and would seek to make it easier to conduct research on marijuana’s positive and negative health impacts by rescheduling it as a schedule 2 drug.”

Currently, cannabis remains a Schedule I drug at the federal level. That classification as defined by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is reserved for drugs “with no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse.” Other well-known Schedule I drugs include LSD, heroin, and peyote.

RELATED: Fact Check: Is Marijuana’s CBD Psychoactive Or Not?

Meanwhile, a Schedule II drug is considered to still have a high potential for abuse, but could also have some accepted medical use. Some Schedule II drugs are methamphetamine, fentanyl, and cocaine.

Biden’s past anti-drug records came back to haunt him this week. In addition to feeling pressure from candidates on drug policy like Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and Cory Booker, a newly surfaced video clip demonstrated that his views haven’t really changed since 1989. The question remains if Biden’s new stance will be enough to convince marijuana advocates to support him ahead of the 2020 Election.

Cannabis Industry Using Health Insurance To Snatch Up Uber And Lyft Drivers

0

Drivers presently earning a living through tech companies like Uber and DoorDash may want to consider delivering marijuana instead. Some cannabis firms are sweetening the pot, so to speak, by offering delivery drivers a benefits package in an attempt to get them to jump ship on their current employer and join their team. It is a move that could force the gig economy to change the way it operates in order to stay competitive, according to a recent report from Yahoo Finance.

Some California cannabis companies understand that it is going to take more than just money to attract good employees. It is for this reason that Caliva, a Bay Area cannabis producer, is now offering delivery drivers a health insurance package complete with a 401(k). The idea is to lure in those independent contractors living without a net – most gig economy jobs do not offer any kind of benefits package — to more stable employment. Considering the high cost of maintaining health insurance today, tech firms may soon find themselves struggling to keep people in the driver’s seat.

RELATED: Uber Drivers May Squeal On You If You Smell Like Marijuana

The cannabis industry is one of the fastest growing business sectors in America. There are now somewhere around 300,000 people earning a paycheck through the cultivation and sale of marijuana. That’s rather significant considering that the coal industry, the industrial division that President Trump seems hell-bent on trying to revive, now only employs around 53,000 workers.

And the jobs market for marijuana is showing no signs of tapering off. Some reports indicate that cannabis industry employment increased by around 44 percent in 2018. And the pay, well, most unskilled laborer positions have a starting wage of somewhere between $10 and $15 per hour. Not great, but better than flipping burgers! For those with an agricultural skillset, however, the salary increases significantly.

But more people today are jumping into the gig economy rather than punching a clock. A recent report from Forbes shows that independent contractors could make up more than half of the working class in the United States within the next few years. This means millions of people are interested in becoming their own boss, having control over their work schedules and the type of work that they do.

RELATED: Forget Uber And Lyft, These Drivers Would Rather Deliver Marijuana

However, there is a downside to being self-employed. Unpredictable income, no retirement savings, and a lack of health insurance benefits are all part of the game when earning a living in the gig sector. Not having health insurance can be especially problematic for older workers, and the expense of these policies can make it nearly impossible for them to maintain on their own. It’s not a situation that appears to be getting any better. A new study from Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) and the Los Angeles Times finds that health insurance and deductibles have skyrocketed vastly over the past decade. This is leaving many working-class stiffs in a financial crisis.

But the cannabis industry is onto something. If it continues to flourish into the realm of legitimate business by providing workers with health insurance benefits, we will likely start seeing more American workers in the coming years entering the field. That will be even truer once the federal government lifts its ban.
