Does Lady Gaga Still Love Cannabis? We Investigate

Beloved singer—and now actress—Stefani Germanotta, aka Lady Gaga, is a huge star, one that we’re pretty sure could speed up the cannabis liberation movement if she decided to speak more on it. Gaga has always been candid about cannabis use in the past, but in those times, the still existing stigma seemed to shade past revelations, like when she told the z100 Morning Show with Elvis Duran in 2013, “I do put that pressure on myself; I have to be high to be creative. I need that, that’s an error in my life that happened for over 10 years. Can I be brilliant without it?”

After a bad injury, medical cannabis became a source of pain relief for Lady Gaga— even though she notes a bit of concurrent escapism. Considering the common tale of opioid abuse spouting from chronic pain management, we should be more than happy to see Gaga going the cannabis route no matter who doesn’t approve.

During that old interview she said, “I have been addicted to it and it’s ultimately related to anxiety coping and it’s a form of self-medication and I was smoking up to 15-20 marijuana cigarettes a day with no tobacco.

I was living on a totally other psychedelic plane, numbing myself completely, and looking back I do see now that some of it had to do with my hip pain. I didn’t know where the pain was coming from so I was just in a lot of pain and very depressed all the time and not really sure why.”

This pain is very much still a part of Lady Gaga’s life, on full display in last year’s Netflix documentary Five Foot Two, where she is shown on camera smoking cannabis rolled cigarillos throughout filming. It’s heartbreaking to see how chronic pain and autoimmune conditions can hurt someone who even has all of the resources that Gaga has, but knowing that she finds at least some relief in cannabis is reassuring.

People magazine also noticed that Gaga never gave any verbal explanation during Five Foot Two, “While the singer never addresses her use of marijuana, Gaga is seen smoking several joints on camera. Whether she’s riding in the car, recording music, or hanging out with friends, the singer never passes up the opportunity to light up.”

Advocates often want another piece of Gaga, and though it’s true that many cannabis people wish she would talk about it more openly, with judgy quotes like those in People, one of the leading celebrity rags, it’s not hard to see why she just wants to let it speak for itself. Legalization could be coming to her home state of New York as soon as springtime, so maybe we will hear more about it.

Now that Lady Gaga is heading for yet another awards season, this time as an actress and a singer, here’s hoping her profile continues to rise. Maybe down the road she will dish more to the mainstream about how cannabis helps her life. The conversations may yet come up, being that A Star Is Born was a very emotional portrait of addiction. This is a hugely painful topic for many Americans, and since more research comes out each month about how cannabis can help with many forms of substance abuse, it could very well be discussed on the awards junket. We’ll be watching and listening for these interesting questions to be addressed by one of our cannabis favs.

There A Word For When Your Ex Reappears

0

Ho ho hold it right there. The relationship ended a long time ago and now you want back in? What is it about the holidays that makes us want to get back together with an ex? Oh, right. Loneliness.

https://giphy.com/gifs/lauren-holiday-xByJvTcWvaVdm

A new term has surfaced for those looking for a second, if not brief chance at getting back together with their SO: Marleying. The name is a nod to Jacob Marley —the former business partner of Ebenezer Scrooge who appears from beyond the grave on Christmas Eve.

According to The Independent, one in ten singles will be Marley’d this year by exes looking for a holiday hookup. They spoke to a 31-year-old guy who attempted to explain the festive association by saying it’s a time for reflection:

With social media it’s so easy to indulge these curiosities, and it can often lead to taking that extra step and actually making contact. I’ve been contacted by exes who’ve wanted to meet for drinks on trips back to my hometown from London, and I’ve also done it myself.

And when everyone returns home for the holidays, the perfect storm takes shape.

Rachael Lloyd from dating site eHarmony recommends this snap back to reality: “Often relationships end for valid reasons such as a lack of compatibility. If this sounds familiar, rather than revisiting a relationship where the same issues could arise all over again, we would suggest spending time with family and friends and enjoying a well-earned break.”

She says going backwards only decreases the odds of finding a new, long-lasting relationship.

Set Your Watches To Party Time With These Marijuana-Infused Churros

Churros evoke memories of theme parks, subway cars, city beaches and for some, childhood and special occasions. These marijuana-infused churros will give you new memories. If you’re a fellow Great British Baking Show fan, you know them as challenging choux pastry that require a bit of finesse to prepare properly. Unless you have the muscle memory of making them a few times, it’s gonna take you a few tries to get them down pat, but they are really fun to try at home, because then it’s ok to eat more than one.

The basic gist of a churro is a rich but light pastry that puffs up in oil as its deep fried, and it’s every bit as delicious as it sounds. Once cooked, these crispy crullers are sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar, and they turn into magic wands ready to be ingested with aromatic and psychoactive pleasure.

The cinnamon that gets dispensed generously on the top has more purpose than flavor and garnish. Potent terpenes from spices like cinnamon can help enhance an experience or speed up the absorption of cannabinoids into your system. Cinnamon is one of the sacred spices in ‘holy anointing oil’, the missing link between cannabis classical antiquity and the current climate.

Cannabis Churros

Danielle Guercio, 2017
Makes 20 churros – 6 mg THC per churro

  • 1 cup canola oil or shortening for frying 1 cup water
  • 2 Tbs sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 beaten eggs
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ⅓ c Cannabis infused butter*
  • 1 c flour
  • Garnish: 1 Tbs cinnamon and ¼ c caster sugar

You really want to set up your workspace before you mess with any frying. There’s a not-oft-employed stovetop portion of the dough making process and since you also will be doing some frying, so get prepared instead of diving in. Once you do, it all moves quickly. Get the oil in a heavy duty skillet or deep pan ready for the flames.

Make a station of paper towel lined cookie sheets to receive the hot churros. Have a saucepan to make your dough, and the piping bag or ziplock fitted with a star tip before you even measure out the goods. The last bit of prep is mixing the sugar and cinnamon so you can dust and promptly shove them in your mouth with no lag time.

Photos by Maria Penaloza

Let the oil come to 325 degrees while you prepare the dough. Melt the butter and bring the water to a boil in a small pan. Add sugar and salt and once incorporated, take off the heat and stir in the flour and work it in well. This will be a bit tough and a wooden spoon is the best tool to go for it.

Photos by Maria Penaloza

Beat the eggs and add some vanilla, getting them nice and fluffy. Scoop in the mixture from the saucepan and gently but thoroughly work it in. This will make a paste-like dough that then goes into the piping bag or ziplock.

Once you’ve got the dough ready to be piped out, work with 4 churros at a time. Squeeze the bag so you get churros of your desired length, mine were 6” to allow for better dosing and quicker cooking. Fry 1-2 minutes per side, turning once and then draining on paper towels. They will be done really quickly, with less than 10 minutes to fry all 20.

Dust immediately with cinnamon sugar mixture, and enjoy responsibly.

*Cannabutter

Decarboxylate 3.5g of finely ground cannabis at 225 degrees for 20 minutes in a tightly sealed, oven safe container. Put cannabis in lidded mason jar or vacuum sealed bag with cannabis and one stick of butter. Heat in water bath just under boiling for at least 1 hour. Strain and chill to use in recipes.

Deep fat frying is typically no bueno for cannabis recipes, but these cook up so quickly that it’s NBD. You will be happy you made such a fantastic thing in your home, since this is one of those things you just have to buy when you see because you never know how soon the next time will be. Crunchy, canna-spiked, and exciting, you’ll be making these when the craving calls now that you know the real deal.

The Best Christmas Movies To Watch While Baked

Watching Christmas classics during the holiday season is a wonderful tradition. You get to sit with your family and friends, and screen a film you guys have no doubt seen dozens of time to get amped for what is, for many of us, the best time of the year. But what better way to partake in such a tradition than by getting a little buzzed first with your favorite strain. Below you’ll find the best Christmas movies for the Cannabis lover.

The Nightmare Before Christmas

Tim Burton’s 1993 stop-motion animated musical masterpiece should take the top spot on any pot lovers Christmas movie list. It’s surreal, dark, and strange, but kid-friendly enough that the whole family can join you (in watching the movie, not smoking before hand, of course).

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

We sincerely hope you grew up in a family that watched this 1989 flick every year, but if you didn’t, you now have the pleasure of watching Clark Griswold and company ruin Christmas for the first time…while you’re high. The movie is full of highlights: Chevy Chase was still in his prime, or at least close enough to it that he was still genuinely funny; Randy Quaid was still only pretending to be crazy; and a pre-Seinfeld Julia Louis Dreyfus co-stars as a snooty neighbor. Plus, there’s a giant sewage-related explosion.

Elf

Beyond being the most recently-released addition to the True Holiday Classic canon, 2003’s Elf is also a fantastic movie to watch while baked. Few screen stars have been funnier than Will Ferrell was in his early- to mid-2000s peak, and his performance as the continually awe-struck and optimistic Buddy the oversized elf is no exception. In addition to all the other humorous moments (the scene above is one of our favorites), it’ll never not be funny watching Ferrell wander around New York City while dressed in a bright green elf outfit.

Home Alone

Everyone agrees that Home Alone is a holiday classic. What makes it a holiday classic to watch after having a weed brownie or two is it’s premium slapstick humor. Almost nothing is funnier than a good fall or scalding hot iron to the face, and the film’s villains—Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern are perfect as the unfortunately named Wet Bandits—suffer through all kinds of painful indignities at the hands of Macaulay Culkin’s Kevin McCallister.

Die Hard

No list of best Christmas movies–to watch high or sober or somewhere in between–would be complete without John McTiernan’s 1988 hit Die Hard, which, yes, is a definitely Christmas movie. From John McClane’s one liners to the huge explosions and long shootouts, few films are as enjoyable to watch while high as the movie that made Bruce Willis a household name. Yippie-ki-yay, motherfucker.

No Regrets: 5 Ways To Embrace Your Holiday Weight Gain

0

If you hate being surrounded by cakes, cookies, candy canes, cocktails and any other sugar-laden indulgences, you may not be a huge fan of of another “c” word: Christmas. It’s a time for joy and merriment, but it’s also a time when sweets seem to be shoved in your face whether you like it or not. Buzz60 has some ways to embrace the inevitable holiday weight gain. Here are 5 easy rules to enforce this season.

Forgive the gluttony

December is only one month of the year! Do you really want to forgo that holiday mimosa party for a day at spin class? We didn’t think so.

Take advantage of ‘limited edition’ foods

Gingerbread lattes, gingerbread houses and gingerbread scones won’t be around in January. Get ’em while you can (and enjoy them!).

Prepare your wardrobe

Instead of buying stretchy pants and another pair of comfy “joggers,” buy a dress in a larger size. You’ll feel better about your body (hell, you may even be able to fill out that dress more easily!) instead of feeling like a total lump of lard.

Skip the salad

Don’t be that person who orders a salad with the croutons and vinaigrette on the side. For one month out of the year, go for the red velvet cupcake.

Skip the gym

But only if you want to. Yes, getting a workout in can definitely make you feel better about your nutritional choices, but if you workout now, what will you do in the New Year?

This Week’s Music: Ariana Grande, Avril Lavigne And Pitbull

This Week’s Music is a weekly column that discusses the weeks’ best, worst, and most interesting songs. We try to select songs of different artists and genres to keep things interesting and to please a variety of music fans.

This week, we feature two pop songs from icon Ariana Grande and former punk princess Avril Lavigne. The first song is great, while the latter is passable. Then there’s Pitbull, who’s the world’s most reliable artist in terms of embarrassment. Check them out:

Pop

Ariana Grande – Imagine

After the record shattering single “Thank U, Next,” Ariana Grande is back with another ear worm, this one more vulnerable and delicate but still managing to sneak in a great beat that doesn’t allow the song to leave your brain for a minimum of a couple of hours. “Imagine” is a fantasy, focused on the beauty of an ideal and perfect love that disregards all problems and realities. It’s a gorgeous and melancholic experience that proves, yet again, that Grande is at the top of her game, bringing to mind the great songs of Mariah Carey and other powerful voices who redefined the genre.

Avril Lavigne – Tell Me It’s Over

Related: This Week’s Music: Grimes, Zolita And Los Unidades

Remember Avril Lavigne? She was a big hit in the 2000’s having a hand in redefining an era of pop and punk music for young women? Yeah, her. Despite the fact that there’s an ongoing conspiracy claiming that Lavigne is dead and that a look alike called Melissa is impersonating her, someone is very alive and making songs in her name. Even though the quality of Lavigne’s content is up for debate, “Tell Me It’s Over” has its moments of enjoyment. They are not many but they’re there in the blues-y rhythms and in her always honest and eager lyrics. After the minute and a half mark I was kind of losing my mind but hey, it’s a vast improvement over her last song.

Hip Hop

Pitbull – Ocean To Ocean (Ft. Rhea)

Where to begin with this? No one would ever believe that the Aquaman movie would feature a song from Pitbull that samples Toto’s “Africa,” yet here we are. “Ocean To Ocean,” Jesus Christ, is a pastiche of rap and awkward tropical music that only offers a break when Rhea sings the original lyrics of “Africa.” Pitbull doesn’t do anything besides pat himself on the back with ridiculous lyrics that proclaim “From ocean to ocean, sea to sea, I’m something you gotta see.” Thank you for ruining a perfectly amazing Karaoke song, Pitbull.

Massachusetts Rec Cannabis Sales Have Now Topped $7Million In 3 Weeks

The Daily Hampshire Gazette reports:

A total of $2,218,208.47 in gross sales was made from legal recreational marijuana and marijuana products last week in Massachusetts.

The week three total was slightly more than the week one total of $2,217,621 in gross sales, but less than week two’s total of $2,586,863, according to data released by the Cannabis Control Commission.

Combined with the first two weeks of sales, over $7 million of legal recreational marijuana and marijuana products have been sold.

All of these sales took place in only two locations: New England Treatment Access in Northampton and Cultivate in Leicester. Both dispensaries were first opened, and also continue to operate, as medical marijuana dispensaries.

The CCC has not released sales data for individual store locations. However, lines outside the building continue to be seen at NETA at all hours of operation.

Alternative Therapies Group, a Salem medical marijuana dispensary, was recently cleared to begin recreational marijuana sales by the CCC, and it is set to start them Saturday. This will make it the third location in the Bay State, and the third east of the Mississippi to sell legal recreational marijuana.

ATG was the first medical marijuana dispensary to begin serving patients in Massachusetts.

Meme Of The Week: Kanye West And Drake Engage In Meme-Worthy Fight

It’s not 2018 if Kanye isn’t doing something exhausting and annoying. As it has happened repeatedly throughout the year, Kanye does something and the internet proceeds to respond, freak out, and process this information for the remainder of the week. Let’s cross our fingers and hope that 2019 provides some peace of mind for Yeezy and for ourselves.

The latest problem that’s been bothering Kanye includes Drake, who reportedly wanted to sample one of Kanye’s songs and Kanye said no. Long story short, one threatened the other, Kim tweeted about it, and I can’t bother to look up the rest of the story because I’m already bored.

The fight is silly and unnecessary, but it has provided prime entertainment for internet dwellers, who’ve created all sorts of memes from Kanye’s tweets and Drake’s blatant disregard of them. It’s really funny, check out some of our favorites:

We conclude this column by leaving you with the wise words of one Ariana Grande:

That’s right. Let’s just ignore Kanye, wish him all the best and let him scream into the empty black void of social media.

Don’t Get Too Excited About Hemp-Mania And CBD Just Yet

Congress took a long overdue leap earlier this week when it passed the 2018 Farm Bill, which included a provision that legalizes industrial hemp production in the United States for the first time in over eight decades. As long of President Trump signs it – something he is expected to do – farmers all across the country will soon have the freedom to add this versatile crop to their plow and pick repertoire.

The measure is also expected to breathe new life into the CBD market, as this trendy derivative of the plant will also be given the kind of legal clearance it has needed to flourish unchained in pits of American commerce.

“CBD has been operating in a gray area up until now,” Jamie Schau, who follows the hemp scene for the Brightfield Group, told Cannabis Wire. “It gives people access to financial resources, loans, insurance all those things important to run a legitimate and scalable business.”

But don’t expect drastic changes to come as soon as the ink from the president’s pen is dry.

Although some states already have industrial hemp pilot programs in place for research purposes, states legislatures still need to pass laws in the coming months allowing farmers to put hemp in the ground.

This is expected to be a hot issue in the new year, especially since farming advocates have spent years pressuring lawmakers for this reform. In states like Indiana, the agricultural sector is hoping to use an industrial hemp crop to make up the difference lost to declining corn and soybeans prices.

Still, before the agricultural community gets too excited about their involvement in this new business division, experts argue that they need to start making a game plan. “I don’t plant corn without having a buyer and now we’ve got people buying hemp without having a buyer,” said Tim Gordon, a hemp producer and the chief science officer at the hemp oil company Functional Remedies.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Agriculture – the agency slated to oversee industrial hemp — will need to hash out the regulatory affairs. This could take anywhere from a year to 18 months, according to some reports. It is conceivable that American farmers might not be able to take full advantage of the new law until 2020. No one really knows how this aspect is going to shake out.

Other unknowns will need to be addressed with the legalization of industrial hemp. For example, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not yet said how it will affect the CBD market. As of now, these products are not regulated by the agency. It is likely that the companies that produce CBD products will have to adhere to federal restrictions and verify ingredients on their labels. This is good news for some, bad news for other. In reality, the legalization of industrial hemp is just the first step to a lengthy process of commercial independence.
