5 Radlers To Quench Your Thirst For Summer

I grew up in New Jersey. In Princeton, to be exact. And, in New Jersey, the summers get HOT. It’s called “The Garden State,” but that’s being generous. For many years, New Jersey was understood to be the Swamp State — there are marshlands everywhere. With humidity, the summers can be a drippy 100-plus degrees. So, to beat the heat, we needed to drink some delicious, refreshing beverages. Enter: the Radler, a part-light beer, part-citrus or soda-based refreshment.

We loved Radlers so much, we used to make our own. Sometimes we called them by their alternate name, Shandy. And for others we used our own, Skippies (don’t ask). Combining our favorite light (read: cheap) beer with lemonade, maybe a little fizzy water — and, if we were feeling saucy, a little vodka — was the perfect daytime drink to sip on around your friend’s backyard pool. Has anything ever sounded so Jersey?

Nevertheless, the process made me a fan of Radlers. And now that I live on the opposite coast, in Seattle, I’ve had to find new versions of the beverage nearby. But there are delicious versions all over the country and beyond. What’s that, you say? You want to know which Radlers YOU can enjoy wherever you are during these oncoming summer months? Perfect! Rainier Radler, Rainer Brewery

Just in time to whet your whistle for spring, the famed Pacific Northwest brewing company, Rainier has released their own version of the bright, citrusy drink. Brewed with lemon zest and orange peel, this effervescent beer somehow tastes even lighter than the original Rainier Lager. Tailgating for a Mariners game? Want to float down a river holding a tallboy can? This is your go-to.

Turbo Shandy Citrus Ale, Hoppin’ Frog Brewery

This Akron, Ohion brewery jumped right out of the box with this one. Get it?! Whereas most Radlers are lighter fare, this beer clocks in at 7-percent ABV (Alcohol By Volume), giving it more of an IPA punch than a Lager. So, if you want to get buzzed quick on a summer’s day, go to Akron.

Over in Boston, the Samuel Adams brewery knows classic styles. They’ve perfected their recipes over many decades. And their version of a Radler is tangy, a touch puckery and will take your mind off of the British invasion – whether it’s the Red Coats, the 60’s rock bands or all the UK actors taking over U.S. movie roles.

Widmer Brothers Brewing, Hefe Shandy

Coming back west, Widmer Brewing in Portland, Oregon, has a taste for the delicious, light and fruity beers. Whether it’s their Marionberry Hibiscus Gose or now their Shandy, the company has refreshing talent. Giving their big name Hefeweizen some extra zest with some well-placed Lemon Drop hops, this unfiltered brew will put a sunshine smile on your thirty lips.

Grapefruit Hefeweizen, Schöfferhofer

While you may or may not be able to speak the language where this beer originates in Germany, you’ve almost assuredly seen this bright orange, inviting can before. A bit sweeter than the beers above, this 2.5-percent ABV brew is the perfect Venn diagram between beer, Radlers and a tasty soda. Bottoms up!

Jeff Sessions Has A Problem With Canadians Crossing US Border After Marijuana Legalization

In a meeting with a group of Canadian Conservative senators, Jeff Sessions and Trump administration officials expressed concerns over Canada’s upcoming plans to legalize recreational cannabis. According to VICE News, US officials specifically expressed worries regarding how Canada’s legalization efforts will affect the border.

Quick backstory: Canadian legalization is the result of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the country’s Liberal government. But these Conservative senators fall in line with their US counterparts and have openly opposed legalization. Frustration mounted due to the “empty answers and broken record” responses from the Liberal government about proposed cannabis laws, so these Conservative Senators sought out meetings in Washington DC

Speaking with VICE, Senator Claude Carignan stated the Canadian delegation met with Sessions and other officials for 45 minutes. The US Department of Justice would not comment on the meetings, though did confirm they took place.

Carignan told VICE that Trump administration officials “raised concerns about a possible increase in illegal cannabis trafficking across the US-Canada border, and possible illegal cannabis activities occurring on Indigenous reserves that straddle the border—although Carignan said they didn’t specify a particular reserve.”

What they have seen in Colorado is that they have seen new [cartels] that have used the legal activities to cover their trafficking,” Carignan said. “They produce more than what they need and they traffick [the cannabis].

In addition, Sessions and Homeland Security Officials said legalization could cause problems for Canadians crossing the border. Canadians could be subjected to increased security screenings and delayed at the border.

“They know that they will have more secondary inspection because if the dogs that they use at the border are very good … if people smoke cannabis and they keep the same clothes … they will smell the cannabis and so automatically they will put the people at the secondary inspection,” Carignan told VICE. “It will delay the travelers from not only for those who have inspections, but for the regular travelers. If they spend more time on secondary, they will have less border agents to take care of the regular travelers.”

During last month’s committee hearing focused on Canada’s proposed cannabis legislation, Canadian Senators heard testimony from immigration and drug policy experts that warned of such complications. However, Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale has repeated that Canadians shouldn’t worry. In addition, he’s stated the lack of concern for U.S. border guards to beef up screening Canadian citizens.

“Our message [to Americans] is this should not be an issue,” Goodale said during another Senate Committee last month. “It becomes an issue if you make it one, but there’s no need to make it one because the border rules have not changed.”

‘Phubbing’ Is A Thing And You’re Probably Guilty Of It

Phubbing may sound like a playful word, but it has the power to ruin relationships and make you less happy. What is it? It’s a mashup of the word “phone” and “snubbing.” And chances are high that you’ve either phubbed someone or have been phubbed yourself.

Snubbing someone by diverting your attention toward your smart phone has become an everyday activity. And according to TIME, it’s not only annoying, it’s harmful. And it’s not surprising how. Think back to how you felt the last time the person you were with wasn’t enough to keep you from scrolling through social media while you were supposed to be engaging with them instead of your device. Did it make you feel empty? If so, you’re not alone.

“Ironically, phubbing is meant to connect you, presumably, with someone through social media or texting,” Emma Seppälä, a psychologist at Stanford and Yale universities and author of the Happiness Track, told TIME. “But it actually can severely disrupt your present-moment, in-person relationships.”

A paper just published (March 25) in the Journal of Applied Social Psychology found that even faux phubbing resulted in negative feelings on the part of the person who felt phubbed.

According to the study:

Participants viewed a three‐minute animation in which they imagined themselves as part of a dyadic conversation. Their communication partner either phubbed them extensively, partially, or not at all. Results revealed that increased phubbing significantly and negatively affected perceived communication quality and relationship satisfaction.

Phubbing was found to threaten four “fundamental needs” — belongingness, self-esteem, meaningful existence and control — by making phubbed people feel excluded and ostracized, says TIME.

An earlier study found that smartphone use undermines enjoyment of face-to-face social interactions, like eating dinner. The study found that when phones were present (vs. absent), participants felt more distracted, which reduced how much they enjoyed spending time with their friends/family. And that during in-person interactions, participants felt more distracted and reported lower enjoyment if they used their phones than if they did not.

This research suggests that despite their ability to connect us to others across the globe, phones may undermine the benefits we derive from interacting with those across the table.

It looks like Lamar Odom will join the trend of celebrities investing in marijuana. While in recovery from crack cocaine and other substance issues, Odom claims he found the healing powers of cannabis.

That journey inspired Odom to begin his new business venture called Rich Soil Organics. The company will focus on the marijuana and wellness niche, with the intention to assist in areas of mental health like stress, depression, and anxiety, as well as physical ailments like chronic pain, headaches, and nausea.

“While going through rehab, I discovered certain strains that support wellness,” Odom said in a press release, adding:

Friends, associates, and ex-teammates asked me what solutions I was using on my road back to recovery, and that’s when Rich Soil Organics was born. It’s a perfect time to offer these Cannabis solutions to the public who may be going through similar body issues as I am.

Rich Soil Organics will feature the usual set of cannabis-related products, like flowers, extracts, concentrates, and CBD/THC infusions. Odom’s company follows suit with other celebrity-backed brands like Ricky Williams’ recently announced Real Wellness in touting wholesome, organic products for consumers.

But Rich Soil announced it will attempt to separate itself from other brands by focusing on “unique strains to foster creativity and focus, with particular consideration for the entertainment world in Hollywood and Los Angeles.”

Rich Soil Organics is expected to debut its product in the company’s state of California during the second quarter of 2018.

You might expect this story to happen in a state with legalized recreational marijuana like California or Colorado. But no, it was fast food joint in Gulfport, Mississippi that had an advisory sign greeting its drive-thru customers. Yes, Sonic demands customers stop smoking weed in drive-thru, they are not kidding.

“ATTENTION,” read the laminated sign in the Sonic window, according to the Sun Herald. “If you are smoking weed in the drive thru you will not be served! Please show some common courtesy and smoke and air out before pulling up to order.”

The manager of the fast-food chain informed the Sun Herald that the sign had come about following an incident where an underage employee had marijuana smoke blown in his face. Employees supported the sign as well, the manager said, because they were tired of smelling weed as customers order.

Again we’d like to remind you this story takes place in Gulfport, Mississippi. Cannabis is illegal in the state, though physicians can prescribe low-THC CBD oil for patients with intractable epilepsy.

According to the Sonic manager, their sign has worked. They’re no longer smelling undesired aromas while doing their jobs. But that’s not all that’s changed. “There have also been a lot of pictures [of the sign] taken,” the manager said.

Kensington Palace made the announcement this morning: “The couple have personally chosen seven charities which represent a range of issues that they are passionate about, including sport for social change, women’s empowerment, conservation, the environment, homelessness, HIV and the Armed Forces.”

The charities include CHIVA (Children’s HIV Association), which supports children growing up with HIV and their families. The charity helps to create a more hopeful and optimistic future for them, ensuring they achieve their greatest potential.

Crisis has also been chosen by the couple. Crisis helps people directly out of homelessness, working side by side with thousands of people each year to help them rebuild their lives and leave homelessness behind for good.

The Myna Mahila Foundation is another charity, which holds a special place in the heart of Markle. She visited Delhi and Mumbai last year, meeting girls and women directly impacted by the “stigmatization of menstrual health.” She wrote about her experience for TIME.

Rounding out the charities is Scotty’s Little Soldiers, Street Games, Surfers Against Sewage, and The Wilderness Foundation UK.

In 2011, Prince William and Kate Middleton made a similar move for their wedding, creating the “Royal Wedding Charitable Fund,” which raised nearly $1.5 million for 26 charities.

By contrast, when Prince Charles and Diana got married in 1981, they received a windfall of gifts, including 20 handcrafted silver platters, each inscribed on the back with the date of the marriage, from Australia…and an entire kitchen worth nearly $19,000 was accepted from a German company. After all, the newlyweds had an entire home and apartment to furnish.

Soft floral prints are in vogue this spring — and one chic lingerie brand is capitalizing on the trend by introducing a tasteful and chic cannabis print sure to be a hit for the marijuana lover.

Fleur du Mal, which boasts being “slightly subversive” in its approach to design, is the brainchild of Jennifer Zuccarini, who has spent years in the lingerie industry — from Kiki De Montparnasse to Victoria’s Secret. The brand made headlines last summer when reality star Kylie Jenner was seen in Beverly Hills wearing a form-fitting silver skirt with a Fleur Du Mal ‘Charlotte’ bralette. And now, A-listers can’t get enough.

This spring, Fleur du Mal outdid itself with a “botanical cannabis” print sure to make headlines. Zuccarini’s fashion ambition is to “change the way women think about lingerie” and “explore the notion of desire and artful provocation.” It appears she has succeeded with this unique offering.

Fashion blog “Wishful Inking” recently reviewed the $295 sweatshirt:

The shirt is 100% silk, and has a subtle textural weave of small diagonal lines across the fabric. The print is crisp, and the colors are vivid and saturated, even in the darkest areas. Often, too much of the white fabric shines through in the darkest areas of a print, resulting in dull, desaturated darks, but I am so very happy with the quality of this print! All interior seams are french seams, and all visible garment edges are trimmed with elegant thin black silk piping. There is a small decorative breast pocket on one side that has been sewn shut. The buttons are plastic, which is expected but boring, so I may replace them with some more interesting buttons in I come across any.

Restaurants have the potential to be nasty places. You also never know when your table was last cleaned, or if the menus have been wiped with a clean towel.

To maintain a semblance of sanity, it’s best to just never think about these things, because if we do, we’d live inside a bubble our entire lives and we’d never go out. And that’s not fun.

According to The Takeout, the absolute worst part about restaurants when it comes to germs are iPads, which are shared between dozens of servers and customers. Screens are always extremely dirty, no matter what device they belong to. And a recent article from Food Safety News supports this fact, stating that “Scientists have found that the average cell phone is 10 times dirtier than a toilet seat. Major pathogens, like streptococcus, MRSA, and E. coli have routinely been found on electronic screens.”

Imagine how many germs are on the screen of a restaurant’s iPad, which is larger than a phone, and is passed around between dozens of strangers with varying degrees of hygiene.

Even though these iPads and tablets are probably wiped clean, like all of the restaurant’s kitchen utensils and objects, dozens of customers could’ve used the iPad before you, transferring their personal germs. We’re not trying to stop you from living your life here, it’s just really important to wash your hands before you eat.

One of the most memorable scenes in the first Sex and the City movie is when Mr. Big surprises Carrie Bradshaw with a ginormous walk-in closet in their brand new penthouse. You could almost smell the still-wet paint on the walls. Seeing that dreamlike closet stabbed at the heart of every woman who loves shoes (aka almost everyone who loves SATC).

Even if you’re not a SATC fan, you probably know Carrie is a clothes horse, with a special penchant for expensive shoes. So the closet scene was kind of iconic. But Cynthia Nixon, who played the feisty, level-headed, tell-it-like-it-is lawyer Miranda Hobbes, revealed that she was disappointed in the scene.

Here it is for those of you who’ve never seen the movie (disclaimer: if you haven’t seen it, know it is not an accurate depiction of the much better HBO series!!!).

During a recent appearance on “The Wendy Williams” show to promote her run for governor of New York, Nixon told the story of how she attended a London screening of the movie and how everyone in the audience clapped when the closet was revealed.

“I was a little devastated by that because it seemed to me that the show was so much about female empowerment and about women making their own choices and women standing up for what they wanted and supporting themselves,” she said. “So to me, to have this be a kind of a climax of the film that your very wealthy husband built you a really nice closet for your clothes, I thought, ‘Wow, that’s not really what you love about this show, is it?’ Because that’s not what we were making it for.”

Nixon’s three BFFs on the show, Kristin Davis, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall, have all thrown their support behind Nixon. Californians Can Now Buy Willie Nelson’s Weed

Cannabis lovers in Washington, Colorado, Oregon and Nevada have already had the chance to try Willie’s Reserve, a brand of cannabis from music legend and longtime marijuana activist Willie Nelson. Now, Californians will get the opportunity to buy Willie’s weed.

Flow Kana, a top sun-grown cannabis company that embraces the small farmer ecosystem, was selected as the Willie’s Reserve partner in California. Cannabis enthusiasts in the Golden State can now purchase Willie’s Reserve Legendary Stash of packaged flower and signature Ready Roll pre-rolled joints from Flow Kana’s network of independent heritage farms in Humboldt and Mendocino Counties.

Nelson has for decades served as the face of responsible marijuana use. He has also been a champion of the small farmer.
