Math: Both Jack And Rose Could Have Totally Survived The ‘Titanic’

A group of high school sophomores, who were born a few years after 1997’s Titanic debuted, figured out that lovers Rose and Jack would have, in fact, survived the sinking ship if they both shared space on the floating door. Good job, Rose, you selfish B.

The teenagers, from Westminster, Australia, won an award for their findings at the National Maths Talent Quest. Here’s how they did it.

“We looked at how buoyant the door would have been, and how that would have changed if there were people on top of that,” Abigail Wicks, 15, told The Advertiser. “There was a lot of exploring and testing, and we had to fiddle with different buoyancies and look at what materials were realistic for that time.”

Her teammate, Julia Damato, also 15, says they factored in how the door’s buoyancy would have been affected by the water’s salt content.

Along with a third student, Christy Zhang, 16, the three young ladies discovered that if Rose and Jack had both stayed on the door and put their life jackets underneath it to stay afloat, they could have gone on to have beautiful fair-haired babies together. But we all know what happened instead — Celine Dion profited a bazillion dollars off our tears.

It should be noted that Mythbusters did this exact same experiment last year and also found that Jack’s death was absolutely needless and a total publicity stunt for an Oscar. It did make for a great ending, though.

A Deep Study Of Taylor Swift’s Meals And Eating Habits

No one inspires as many think pieces as Taylor Swift. For whatever reason, whenever she says something to the media, releases a song, or simply breathes, there are legions of haters and fans alike who will defend and attack.

It’s stunning to see just how much the world revolves around the singer whenever she pops up. We tend to forget her and live in peace for a couple of months, but then she comes back and it’s like the Swift craze never left.

While Taylor Swift has made a lot of things iconic, creating endless memes, coining terms like girl squad and immortalizing the world’s most dramatic celebrity feud, people also obsess over her eating habits. The Daily Meal has investigated what lies in T. Swift’s fridge and we’re not surprised by what they found.

While everyone else is pushing their food into perfect lighting, dressing it up in “going out” clothes, and contouring it into unrecognizability just to pass Instagram’s “like” test, there is a subset of OGs who are keeping it old school; the type of old school that you’d never consider posting on social media, just like those Polaroids you’ve stumbled upon digging through your grandma’s hope chest. You know, the ones where you have, like, 27  plastic barrettes in your ratty, derelict hair and one eye looks like it needs immediate medical attention? Yep. Those ones.

Here are 15 photos that prove our obsession with intangible perfection may not be as severe as we thought. Thank you Reddit’s “Shitty Food Porn” for being our Santa Clause year-round.

Thanksgiving Side Dishes 101: Slow Cooker Sweet Potato Casserole

0

On Thanksgiving, we can all use a a few dishes that cook themselves.  With the help of a slow cooker, this recipe for sweet potato casserole does just that.  With the exception of the marshmallow topping, the entire side dish is prepared in the crock pot.  As an added bonus, you will have additional oven space to bake more pie.

Slow Cooker Sweet Potato Casserole

For the casserole:

  • 5 lbs sweet potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 stick unsalted butter, Melted
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup half and half
  • salt, to taste

For the topping:

  • 1 cup pecans, roughly chopped
  • 4 cups Mini Marshmallows

Directions:

Step 1: Add water and sweet potatoes to the slow cooker.  Cook potatoes for 3 to 4 hours on high or until potatoes are tender.

Step 2: Drain sweet potatoes and return back to slow cooker bowl.  Add the eggs, vanilla, butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, half and half and salt. Mash sweet potatoes with ingredients until well combined.  Continue to cook on high for an additional 1 to 2 hours.

8 Times ‘The Simpsons’ Perfectly Predicted The Future

No matter how much time passes and how many iterations of the iPhone exist, you can always rely on the  “The Simpsons” to be a place where things tend to stay the same. Homer will always love beer, Bart will always love his skateboard, Lisa will always be goals AF, and Maggie will always be a toddler. Also, Marge will never change her hairstyle because the world couldn’t stand it.

We’re also sure that the writers of the show have some hidden crystal ball that can see the future, because these predictions are uncanny.

Here are 8 times when reality hit Springfield before it hit us:

Donald Trump Is President

The most unimaginable and most jarring prediction ever aired on a Simpsons episode in the year 2000. Who would’ve thought that The Simpsons would foresee the results of the most controversial elections in American history, 16 years before they happened?

Smartwatches

I remember when smartwatches came out and thought they were the stupidest and most useless thing ever. Now everyone has them. Should’ve paid more attention to The Simpsons.

Lady Gaga’s Halftime Show

She had to copy it. It’s the only way.

Disney Buying 20th Century Fox

It’s only a matter of time before Disney comes knocking on your door and kicks you out of your house. Surprise! They just bought the state where you live.

The NSA Spies

On The Simpsons Movie, the family goes into hiding and they’re located because the NSA listens in on their phone conversations. Ring any bells?

Facetime

On the episode of ‘Lisa’s Wedding’ we see a futuristic version of the world where Lisa is face timing Marge. The episode aired in 1995, a time when we were barely getting used to the idea of having computers in our houses. Steve Jobs who? Credit where credit is due.

Siegfried & Roy’s Tiger Attack

Ok, in the show the characters are called Gunter and Ernst but we all know who they’re really supposed to be.

Miley’s Wrecking Ball

The original Wrecking Ball aired in 1994. Miley Cyrus did a remake on 2013.

California’s Marijuana Mecca Inches Closer To Completion

The tiny town of Nipton was once built by the gold rush, is now being completely transformed by the green rush into a marijuana mecca.

American Green, Inc. bought the entire town of Nipton, all 80 acres, which had been for sale since January with an asking price of $5 million. American Green wants this near ghost town to thrive again, with sustainable energy sources and above all else as a marijuana destination.

They’ve already renovated a small cafe and have big plans for providing the town with ample lodging. There are plans for public smoking and the bringing in of entrepreneurs who don’t want to be saddled by government regulation. They hope for cultivators, processors and edibles makers to find their new home in this pot destination.

Now all’s they need is the weed. California still doesn’t go legal until January 2018 and there are no medical dispensaries in town. But as the saying goes, if you build it, they will come and the savvy, publically traded company had a good idea of what they were doing when they purchased the town.

Nipton is on the edge of the Mojave desert and is nearly a straight shot from Las Vegas. Though certainly off the beaten path, it’s isolation and rustic charm already draw tourists looking for a western experience.

Now American Green hopes that they’ll flock to the green experience, from green energy to the greens that will be publically imbibed.

Stephan Shearin is the project lead for American Green when it comes to Nipton and says that it changes by the day, according to WBIR: “It’s really a combination of modernizing some things, returning other things to the way they were, and bringing in our own touches,” he said.

Among other, more marijuanacentric ideas, American Green hopes to restore postal service and bring in banking. It will be interesting to see if the bank they bring in is a marijuana friendly bank, as nearly all banks shy away from the yet unregulated and federally illegal cannabis marketplace.

According to WBIR, Shearin also said, “This isn’t an 80-ace development of condos. People have been living there for 130 years. We’re evolving the town into the future.”

And the future looks bright indeed, at least for now. Once all logistics are in place and the public smoking and bud businesses kick in, we’ll see how long the administration let’s the west continue to run wild.

You Might Soon Be Buying Marijuana From These Vending Machines

What can’t you buy from vending machines these days? Whenever traveling,we can’t help noticing the strange accessories one could find in an airport vending machine, ranging from iPads to Beats wireless headphones and more. Who is walking around an airport and decides this is when they’ll drop all that extra cash?

This is relevant because a technology company has developed a new type of vending machine that would be highly interesting to cannabis users worldwide. According USA TODAY, American Green is a Phoenix-based medical cannabis technology company and they’ve released a prototype for a vending machine that will sell marijuana.

The machine will use “biometric verification technology” via a finger scanner that will sell controlled substances to those of legal ages. Other items that could be included in this machine include alcohol, casino chips, pharmaceuticals, and guns.

These vending machines would be ideal for areas like casinos or nursing homes, where it is advantageous to be cash-less and patrons, like the elderly, possibly shouldn’t leave their premises to acquire these substances. Though 29 states have legalized medical cannabis, some states still require users to buy at dispensaries instead of possible off-site locations. This could reduce that possible complication.

“This could make individuals who need it more comfortable. They won’t run into their pastor or kindergarten teacher outside a dispensary,” said NORML Executive Director Erik Altierri to the USA TODAY.

Though some worry about the abuse of such systems, the possible cannabis vending machines already have built-in precautions. For example, you can’t cut off someone finger to use the machine illegally, as the device detects vein architecture for blood flow. There will be other worries and problems to solve before these machines see a release, buying weed from a vending machine remains a tantalizing prospect of the future.

Let’s Talk About How Marijuana Is An Analgesic That Kills Pain

Right you are! Even though it’s not specifically approved, pain relief is the most common off-label use for medical marijuana. Not all pain is the same, however, and cannabis seems to best serve a niche clientele among the agonized and achy.

Chronic nerve pain affects up to 2 percent of the population (typically as a consequence of surgery or HIV/AIDS), and it’s a condition that does not respond well to treatment: Less than half of patients can find even partial relief in our current battery of medication. But for the unserved 50 percent, cannabis offers a new hope. A 2015 meta-analysis by the American Medical Association reviewed 12 trials and concluded that there is “moderate-quality evidence” that cannabis—or more specifically, THC—effectively treats neuropathic pain. That’s hardly a full endorsement, but, given the rudimentary state of cannabis research, it’s the highest praise JAMA has to offer

Delving down into the weeds, there is conflicting findings about optimal dosage and even effect: Low concentrations of THC may work as well as moderate concentrations, or it may not work at all. High concentrations (according to one report) can actually increase pain. Another study even found that smoking was the best delivery system—which in not something the Man wants to hear.

But even if weed is unarguably an analgesic, Mr. Establishment can take satisfaction in the proviso that the finding is “provisional” and the efficacy is “not great.” But, to put that in context, if you rate your chronic pain a 6 out of 10 and cannabis drops it even to a 5, that’s still a real benefit.

4 Things You Need To Know Before Investing in Cannabis Stocks

One of the most-discussed investment sectors for 2017 is the cannabis industry. It is poised for growth, to be sure: After November’s historic election, eight state now have legalized full adult recreational use and 29 states have a medical marijuana program.

As the legal consumer base blossoms, so does the revenues. Cannabis sales will nearly triple in the next three years — from $7.4 billion today to nearly $21 billion by 2020, with a compound annual growth rate of 29 percent — Arcview Market Research, a San Francisco-based cannabis research firm, projects.

Colorado, Washington and Oregon — the most mature legal states — experienced 62 percent growth last year.

With that kind of explosiveness, investors’ eyes are bulging with visions of possibilities of enormous wealth. But before you begin investing in cannabis stocks, there see are a few things you should know.

What Does The Company Even Do?

Are you investing in a farm? A technology? A retailer? It matters. According to a detailed a analysis by Bloomberg Intelligence:

The pot companies are an eclectic mix. Pharmaceutical businesses have been the most successful so far. Some produce medical marijuana; others are hedging by investing in hemp- or cannabis-based drugs to treat pain and fibrotic diseases. Marijuana growers make up the second largest segment. And two tech companies are developing breathalyzers for pot smokers.

Here is a breakdown of investment in the cannabis sector’s sub-categories:

  • Pharmaceutical & Research: $1.5 billion
  • Producer/Grower $645 million
  • Consumer products: $302 million
  • Real estate: $216 million
  • Consulting:  $170 million
  • Technology: $162 million
  • Industrials: $54 million

Some investors make the investment calculation in a simple way: Does the company “touch” the product or not? Since cannabis is still considered a Schedule I substance and federally illegal, risk-averse investors steer clear of grow operations or farms since the risk is considered high. Investing in real estate and consulting, for example, are considered a safer strategy.

What Is A Penny Stock?

Over-the-counter (OTC) stocks — also known as penny stocks because of the low price of most shares — are among the riskiest investments you can make. When you make an OTC stock purchase, be prepared to lose it all.

Companies that trade shares over the counter do not have to file audited financial reports with regulators. Claims made by the companies can often be exaggerated and these stock prices are easy for insiders to manipulate.

The Securities and Exchange Commission issued an investor alert in 2014 regarding fraudulent marijuana stocks, warning potential buyers of exaggerated claims:

“Fraudsters often exploit the latest innovation, technology, product or growth industry — in this case, marijuana — to lure investors with the promise of high returns. … When publicly-available information is scarce, fraudsters can more easily spread false information about a company, making profits for themselves while creating losses for unsuspecting investors.”

Does this mean do NOT invest in these stocks? No. It just means that you need to be diligent in your research. And if you are getting the hard sell, it’s wise to walk away.

Are There Marijuana Stocks Sold On Regulated Exchanges?

There are a handful of large firms that are worth considering if you are seeking a lower-risk strategy. Keep in mind that these stocks are not as volatile and the growth curve will be more gradual.

GW Pharmaceuticals

This biotechnology firm based in Great Britain makes cannabis-based drugs. The company’s product line includes medicines that help treat pain, multiple sclerosis and severe epilepsy. (NASDAQ: GWPH)

Microsoft

Yes, the Washington-based software behemoth is in the marijuana business , tangentially. In 2106, Microsoft purchase Kind Financial in an attempt to boost its cloud-computing offering. Microsoft is working with Kind’s “government solutions” division, which provides compliance systems to state governments that have legal marijuana laws. (NASDAQ: MSFT)

The Bottom Line: Should I Invest In Cannabis?

It’s your money. Do your research. Double check your research. Take a look at your investment portfolio. Do you have relatively safe investments that would counterbalance taking a runner on a longshot?

And, finally, search SEC.gov to see whether the SEC has taken any action against the company or anyone associated with the company.
