Can You Be Allergic To Marijuana?

Allergies can be all year round and 24/7 making them difficult to fully enjoy your day.  There are normal allergies like pollen, strawberries, dust mites, peanuts, animal fur and bee and wasp stings.  Then there are wacky allergies like water, coins, sunlight, and sweat. But can you be allergic to marijuana?

Some people have an alcohol allergy or intolerance.  Alcohol allergy is more rare and more severe, but intolerance isn’t a barrel of fun.  Globally we spend over $40 billion a year to treat allergies in one way or another.

With more and more people using cannabis recreationally or medically, it is natural allergies would pop up.  With 45+ million consuming in Canadian and the US, you are going to a number who find it has an unfortunate side effect.

Allergy to marijuana is considered rare, but a reports of allergies to marijuana have been documented. It’s estimated perhaps up to 10% of people may have an allergy or a reaction to marijuana or THC. The number may increase as the plant legalization and use grows.

How do know if you are allergic to marijuana?  Common sense to start with, if you consume and you have an onset of reactions, it is a major clue. The best way to diagnose an allergy is to perform a challenge in a safe setting with a trusted doctor.

Symptoms from a cannabis allergy may include

  • Asthma symptoms such as wheezing
  • Hives
  • Skin rash
  • Swelling/watering/itching eyes
  • Sore throat
  • Shortness of breath
  • Nasal symptoms such as sneezing
  • Anaphylaxis in rare cases

Symptoms of a marijuana allergy can range from mild to severe. Most marijuana allergy symptoms occur immediately in adults; less frequently, they can be delayed for hours. Adults with a marijuana allergy usually show symptoms within hours or days after first being exposed to cannabis. While it is rare, it is possible to experience anaphylaxis after exposure to marijuana. It’s important to recognize your symptoms and seek medical attention immediately if you suspect a severe allergic reaction.

If you think that you have developed an allergy to marijuana, the best thing to do is avoid it. This means no longer smoking weed or consuming edibles, as well as refraining from touching it and having any secondhand exposure to it.

This isn’t currently a clinical treatment for marijuana. Marijuana allergy is not curable however, some individuals grow out of it throughout adulthood. Symptoms may become less severe over time.

The Imagine Of Today’s Marijuana User Is Not What You Think

Think you know the answers – well….

The 70’s show was popular enough to have a new spin off called the 90s show on Netflix.  The antics of the kids usually involved either sex, marijuana and goofy drama.  But it also showed something more…the changing faces of those who use marijuana.  The “hippie” in the show was Leo, who runs the Fotohut is chill and plays into all the stereotypes. He is  played by stoner icon Tommy Chong.  But almost everyone else in the show also winds up using during the show, and that is the foreshadowing of things to come.

It seems in the over 18 set, white people (53.6%) use more cannabis than black people (45.3%). What is unfortunate since across all 50 states, on average, black people are 3.6 times more likely to be arrested on marijuana charge.

Additionally, 68% of conservative voters support federal cannabis according to a study this year. Congresswoman Nancy Mace (R-SC), has been a leader in the bipartisan efforts in Congress toward federal legalization.

The generation most excited for legal cannabis is Gen-Xers at 93%. They agree that cannabis use has many health benefits and can be good for the mind and body.  Gen-Xers were born between 1965-80 and represent about 65 million people. They are also the age to craft and implement policy decisions both locally and federally.

Millennials are the largest age group (22%) are are voting and soon will decide on major issues like marijuana legalization, climate change, housing and more. An estimated 92% of them are believe cannabis should be legal and available.

Study: Older Adults Are Using Cannabis At Higher Rates

A new report in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine found cannabis use in adults 65 and older increased by 75 percent over a three-year period. Among the 65-plus population, 4.2% used marijuana in 2018 versus 2.4 % in 2015. In 2006, usage in the age group was only 0.4%, the report states. Seems that are fast growing demographic.

Marijuana has not only helped seniors medically, but also to better engage in intimate relationships. They are not alone, results of this study, published in the National Library of Medicine, contrast and establish new evidence within the literature. Demographic results indicate that the people who use cannabis are of a wide range of ages, from a variety of occupations, and have differing cannabis use preferences. The inclusion of LGBTQIA + respondents is a strength of this study. Overall, results indicated that both men and women perceived that cannabis use increased their sexual functioning and satisfaction, particularly increased desire and orgasm intensity.

With 88% of the country believing cannabis should be legal in some form, it seems part of the public are using it to relax, destress or for medical issues along with just having some fun.

Science Tosses Cold Water On Psychedelics

Psychedelic plants and mushrooms have been used for a thousand years. Long part of indigenous medicinal traditions, it wasn’t part of modern research until 1938.  In recent years, there has been an explosion in for profit businesses who push for legalization. The Psychedelic Drugs Market is anticipated to reach a valuation of  $11.82 billion US by 2029 from $4.87 billion US in 2022. Recently the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) published an article, and, it seems, science tosses cold water on psychedelics.

Veterans of the  boom – bust – and sort of boom marijuana industry pivoted starting in 2019 to jump into building psychedelic companies and brands. Investors who have seen slow returns on companies like High Times and Tilray have been wooed into the next big thing which, they say, will have a quicker return.

The crux of the issue is the research. Anecdotal information is abudant with millions swearing to the effectiveness of treatment.  But that is not science, and there is not data to verify claims. In the 1950-60s there was a  period of scientific and cultural exploration.  Psychedelic research was slowed significantly decreased starting in the 70s with governmental interventions.

man in black crew neck t-shirt wearing white goggles

There are issues the recent article in the  JAMA that need to be resolved for government always it become fully mainstream. We have highlighted three in this article.

How Reliable Are The Studies?

The double-blinded randomized controlled trial (DB-RCT) remains the gold standard method for determining if an intervention is efficacious. However, psychedelic drugs’ intense psychoactive effects make blinding difficult and render trials susceptible to expectation effects.  Psychedelic are very personal so looking at a groups of blind data is very difficult, making it even harder to see trends, patterns, benefits and warnings.

What Are The Risks

The challenges of rigorous trial design and the “moral panic” that accompanied the first wave of psychedelic research make separating the true risks of psychedelic drugs from myth and misinformation difficult. Classic psychedelic drugs cause acute and dose-dependent increases in heart rate and blood pressure, but they do not seem to have significant nonpsychiatric medical risks.4 In terms of psychiatric risks, there is concern that individuals with a diagnosis, or immediate family history, of a psychotic or bipolar disorder may be at increased risk of adverse events (eg, prolonged psychosis), but more research is needed.

Another arguably underappreciated risk of psychedelic therapy concerns the possibility of major life changes after the experience.

What Are the Challenges of Scaling Psychedelic Therapy?

Questions remain regarding the societal impact of psychedelic drugs as they are scaled up from research trials to clinical practice. Another critical issue is the high cost of current psychedelic therapy models, which typically involve 2 clinicians for the 6- to 8-hour dosing sessions, bookended by approximately 10 to 15 hours of talk therapy.

Anything that is a healthier and a more natural solution for physical and mental ailments is a positive. It is important for global research to invest in solutions that will benefit millions.  Equally important is people understand science will make things more effective if allowed to explore and research.

Marijuana Is Not The Cause Of The Fentanyl Crisis

Don’t blame marijuana for fentanyl sweeping the nation and endangering millions

Fentanyl has become the thing parents warned us about.  Easily addictive, it can wreck a person’s life within a few months. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is up to 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine. From Oregon to Alabama, hot spots are cropping up and cities, police and healthcare are trying to figure out a response.

There are two types of fentanyl: pharmaceutical fentanyl and illicitly manufactured fentanyl. Both are considered synthetic opioids, both can be be deadly.

Anti-cannabis proponents in media and government say marijuana use leads to harder drugs including heroin and fentanyl.  Science says it is not true and scientists are exploring what more medical marijuana can do as a benefit for humanity.

Fentanyl and other synthetic opioids are the most common drugs involved in a fate overdose. Even in small doses, it can be deadly. Each day 150+ people die from fentanyl related overdosesRecent cases are linked to illicitly manufactured fentanyl, which is distributed through illegal drug markets for its heroin-like effect. It is often added to other drugs because of its extreme potency, which makes drugs cheaper, more powerful, more addictive, and more dangerous.

Marijuana is fully legal in 23 states and medically legal in 40. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), there has yet to be a drug overdose death solely attributed to cannabis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also states that while symptoms of too much THC might include extreme confusion, emotional distress, increased blood pressure, heart rate, severe nausea, or unintentional injury, “a fatal overdose is unlikely.”

There has been reports of a marijuana laced with fentanyl, which is why you should purchase from legal retailer if possible.

Medical marijuana can be used as an effective and non-additive pain reliever over opioids. Invasive surgery is traumatic to the system resulting in significant pain.  Opioids have been used, but medical marijuana has been shown to work effective and not be addictive, and helps with recovery.  More research is being conducted to explore this approach.

But cannabis use is associated with reduced risk of exposure to fentanyl among people on opioid agonist therapy during a community-wide overdose crisis.

Marijuana is also recognized by the American Medical Association as having benefits for ailment as varied as nausea to cancer.

Change How You Consume Marijuana During Air Quality Alerts

Over 100 million people are under and air quality alert, you might want to change how you consume marijuana.

Canadian wildfires have exploded and hundreds of millions of Canadians and Americans are under an air quality alert.  Eastern Canada, the northeast US from Virginia to Maine are blanketed with thick smoke. New York City is recorded as having the worst air quality in the world yesterday. Masks, closed windows on hot days and air purifiers are in demand, so maybe it is time to change up how you consume marijuana.

Joints and pre-rolls are the most popular form of cannabis use and represent a significant portion of sales.  But smoking in an already comprised environment could cause short and long term problems that spoil the experience.

“The particulate matter that’s in this haze is significant because it does irritate the bronchioles, or the small tubes that go down into your lungs and connect to the alveoli, which are the sacs that allow you to breathe,” Dr. Bob Lahita, director of the Institute for Autoimmune and Rheumatic Disease at St. Joseph’s Health, told CBS News. “That gets irritated in people without asthma, but if you have asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, congestive heart failure or anything that involves your lungs or even your heart, you should stay indoors.”

Smoking, be it cigars, joints, or cigarettes are irritants to the lungs. Smoked marijuana, regardless of how it is smoked, can harm lung tissues and cause scarring and damage to small blood vessels.  With such current poor air quality, you are likely to have more coughing and hacking, definitely a downer for your chill.  There are lots of way to consume marijuana including edibles and oils that can send you on the journey.

Another example of the current atmosphere disruption is travel. Smoke from wildfires in Canada is a serious problem for airlines. It has created conditions that cause more delays than rain or fog, the Federal Aviation Administration said. That’s because airlines rely on advanced navigation systems on the planes and on the ground, according to the FAA’s Kevin Morris.

Why Gen Z Is Putting Down Beer And Picking Up Marijuana

The Boomer generation grew up with Santa pushing cigarettes for Christmas, smoking on planes and kids able to mix drinks cocktails. Marijuana was seen as evil and the (falsely) road to a “bad end”. There has been significant baggage about a good vice versus a bad vice.  Things started changing around the birth of Gen Z.  The three martini lunch declined as did afterwards afternoon boozy behavior in the office. Big Tobacco lost a landmark case costing them $206 billion. It is the largest settlement in U.S. history. And marijuana was grudgingly seen by “those in charge” as possibly having medical benefits.

Gen Z grew up with changing attitudes including a focus on heath, cleaner air, bottled water and a balanced lifestyle.  They begin to see marijuana as a staple and not a sin.  Around 93% of Gen-Xers agree that cannabis use has many health benefits and can be good for the mind and body.

“Gen Z is the first generation to be of legal consumption age in an environment with widespread adult-use cannabis access,” Amanda Reiman, New Frontier Data’s vice president of public policy research, said in an email exchange. The firm’s study, which included 4,170 current cannabis consumers and 1,250 nonconsumers, found that the preference seems to fade with age, with just 44% of respondents aged 65 to 74 choosing weed over booze.

In states where recreational cannabis products are legal, 65% of Gen Z survey respondents smoke marijuana and 51% consume cannabis-infused beverages, Technomic, the foodservice industry data company, reported in its Adult Beverage Planning Program.

Most of this consumption takes place at home, but 38% of Gen Zers would visit a marijuana lounge or club to partake of the products. Visiting a bar or restaurant for a drink and/or food edges out that number at 41%, but the margin is thin.

Gen Zers are drinking less than young people in past generations with about 20 percent less alcohol per capita than millennials did at their age, according to a report from Berenberg Research. And many are forgoing booze entirely.

Contrary to in cannabis industry’s claim that marijuana is going to doom alcohol, rather it is going to be added to the mix and change patterns of behavior.  Some claimed bottled water would never work, then it said it would kill sodas, now it is just an separate revenue line for the big soda companies.

Nothing stays the same, but it is interesting to watch the change.

Female, Veggie, And What? Some Unknown Marijuana Facts

Marijuana continues to gain popularity and more mainstream companies are diving in to exploring and exposing the plants positive attributes. From Estée Lauder to Molson Coors big businesses are bringing cannabis straight to the consumer.  And from South Africa to Italy to Minnesota, recreational use is legal. But despite it being as well know, there are still some unknown marijuana facts for the general public.

Like most things over 2,500 years old, it has a history AND it has tidbits of knowledge unknown to the masses.  Until the recently, most research was done on what harm the plant could inflict, but now there is a growing effort to see what benefits can be unlocked.

Marijuana goes by many names.  Weed, pot, mary jane are just a few. A unique name that has become the cannabis emoji of choice is broccoli, so when you seen the emoji, you know it is about more than a staple vegetable.

Other unique names include Houdini because the user “escapes” reality. Da kine is the Hawaiian surf slang which can refer to anything for which one forgets the precise name. And bag of bones means multiple marijuana cigarettes

Female marijuana plants produce the potent high THC via the buds. Guy plants only produce small amounts of THC and they do not produce buds. The bud contains high levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the psychoactive compound in cannabis responsible for the effects of being “high”.

Marijuana growers want to remove male plants from the grow area before they begin to flower and release pollen. Once a marijuana plant starts to produce male flowers, it can pollinate and ruin all of the females in the grow area causing them all to start flowering prematurely. It sounds like a complicated plot from Sex in The City.

While many countries have legalized marijuana and many promises have been made to grow businesses, what countries grow the most?  Canada, the legal trendsetter, set the stage for “new” or “big” cannabis.  They are home to companies like Tilray and more who claimed they will make everyone rich on indoor grow, but they are only 8th in global production. With their climate, they have a smaller black market and shorter growing season. The third place in production is sunny Afghanistan. The country’s largest and fastest cash crop is opium. The poppy and cannabis trade has a more significant impact on the civilians in Afghanistan than the impact of wheat farming and livestock trading.

Second place has farmed cannabis for centuries and in 2021 made medical marijuana legal along with cosmetic and industrial purposes.  Morroco is former largest producer but has been ousted by the new champion.

The black market is thriving in the United States, which has a huge agricultural history in the American South and Midwest. They are the new reigning champion. New indoor grows and significant outdoor production is working to meet an in-country need for the 23 fully legal states and the 40 medical marijuana ones.

The more you know.

The Largest Country In The World’s Take on Marijuana

In 2023 India becomes the most populous country in the world.  The exotic nation is known for Bollywood, amazing fabrics, technology, a great love story, the Kama Sutra and their cuisine.  But what is the largest country in the world’s take on marijuana?  Well, it is a bit complicated.

India was a series of small nations prior to the British colonizing them and making them part of the great empire. In 1947, they broke from the UK to become a independent under India’s first prime minister—Jawaharlal Nehru. India has 28 states each with a cultural identity reaching back thousands of years.  India has 22 separate official languages and home to a total of 121 languages and 270 mother tongues. It’s also home to the world’s oldest language, Hindi

Cannabis in India has been known to be used at least as early as 2000 BCE. Today it is a bit complicated on how they approach marijuana.

India primary religion is Hinduism. The third largest religion has a trinity of  gods: Brahma the creator, Vishnu the preserver and Shiva the destroyer. Shiva was is a fan of marijuana. Cannabis is one of the most sacred Hindu plants, and it is written in the fourth Veda it relieves anxiety. Thus it is used sacred spiritual and religious plant.

Maha Shivaratri also known as ‘night of Shiva’ is a major holiday in India. On this day, Hindus worship Lord Shiva and his wife Parvati with thousands of years old customs and traditions. According to legend, it the night when Shiva married his bride and experienced the beauty of love and pleasure of sex for the first time. Consuming marijuana is considered part of the holiday. Shiva, it’s believed, used marijuana both to relax and to focus better for meditation. The tradition lives on today worldwide.

During Holi, the annual Hindu festival of colors, a drink called thandai, which literally translates to “cooling off,” makes an appearance. Depending on where you go, the traditional milky concoction might be laced with hints of an edible Indian cannabis called bhang. Bhang holds cultural significance for Indians.

What is bhang? An avocado-green paste made with the young leaves, flowers, and stems of the cannabis plant, which get soaked, ground, and then mixed with whole milk or yogurt to make a shake. The legal status of cannabis in India is fuzzy. In some states it’s permissible, in others and from a federal point it is not. But go for a drive in many places and you’ll run across government-run stores with the words “Bhang Shop” in bright scarlet letters. Bhang is highly popular and accepted in the country.

A nation of contradictions, India’s enforcement and legalization of marijuana is a bit puzzlingThe Assam Ganja and Bhang Prohibition Act of 1958 bans the sale, possession, purchase, and consumption of ganja and bhang. The Bombay Prohibition Act of 1949 prohibits the manufacture, possession, and consumption of bhang and bhang-containing substances without a license in Maharashtra.

Even possessing prohibited drugs (weed or marijuana) in India is an offense under the NDPS Act. The purpose of possession of drugs is not relevant and the punishment depends upon the quantity of drugs in possession. If a person is caught with drugs or found to be a drug addict, he/she would not be subject to prosecution if he/she voluntarily chooses to undergo de-addiction treatment.

As Shiva would say “You are free to make any decision, but you aren’t free from the consequences of those decisions. In India you can have, consume, and meditate with marijuana, as long as the wrong person doesn’t catch you.  If then, it is a negotiation on what happens next.

Things NOT To Do When You Have Marijuana – Like Buy A Ferry

Marijuana use directly affects brain function, specifically the parts of the brain responsible for memory, learning, attention, decision-making, coordination, emotions, and reaction time.  When in this state, there are definitely some things you should not do.  An SNL alum highlights that point when he shared he bought a ferry while stoned!

Pete Davidson is know as much for TV as his dating life and good humor. The talented star has been frank about having borderline personality disorder (BPD) and using medical marijuana to manage.  Like many other comedians, Davidson struggles and it helps him calm his brain. He has dated Ariana Grande, Kate Beckinsale, Kim Kardashian and more while having a bit of a goofy good time boy attitude.  He lives his life on this terms.

Davidson walked the red carpet at the premiere of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts in New York City, and opened up about his surprise Staten Island Ferry investment with his former Saturday Night Live so-star made in January 2022.

RELATED: Science Says Medical Marijuana Improves Quality Of Life

Davidson shared he and Colin Jost got stoned and did a little shopping. They won a decommissioned Staten Island ferry at auction for only $280,000!  That is a bit more than most people spend on Wayfare, Amazon or Ebay after having an edible or too much wine.

So while consuming here are some things you might not want to do if you had a bit much:

  • Texting exes – social media is full of either next day regrets or memes about people who did not this this advice
  • Drive a car, motorbike, boat, ship, scooter, bike or plane – it is just common sense
  • Overeat. Ted in Pasadena, California says he makes a big low fat/calorie platter to snack on when consuming and watching movies. It keeps him from devouring huge helpings of rice, ice cream and other things he regrets.
  • Taking the plunge and asking your crush out.  While it may be considered cute and work out, there are minefields you should avoid.
  • Talk about important issues.  It will be hard to focus on complicated matters and you may decide in the moment to cede more than you planned.
  • Watch scary movies.  Could be to much of the wrong type of stimulation.
  • Respond to work emails or calls, this does NOT need to be explained.
  • Have key one on one appointments. This includes your therapist, hair dresser, pastor, parole officer and more.
  • Decide on getting ink immediately.  You want to wait 24 hours, trust us.

Davidson and Jost continue to be the owners of a the 1965 MV John F. Kennedy. The 2109 ton ship is 277 feet long with 3 decks and can hold up to 3,500 passengers and 40 cars.  They are still exploring the options of making it an event space or club.

At the premier Davidson shared “I have no idea what’s going on with that thing, we’re figuring it out.”

Real Marijuana And Virtual Reality – Do They Mix?

Virtual Reality is more accessible to people – does marijuana make it even better?

They are two giants of a new era – marijuana and virtual reality(VR). Marijuana, after decades of being banned is coming out the closet with 88% of people believing some form should be legalized.  Virtual reality is putting us in a custom universe allowing us to see and do things we have only dreamed about.  But can they walk you down a road together?

VR is a worldwide market worth $31 billion and with an estimated 171 million worldwide users.  The 25-34 year old is the largest market representing 23%.  Marijuana is an almost $30 billion global market with about 147 million users.

While VR places you in a crafted world, marijuana enhances the world you are in, whether it is real or virtual. Marijuana has THC, the component that give you s “high”. For many people, the THC experience is a pleasant euphoria and sense of relaxation. Other common effects, which may vary among consumers, include heightened sensory perception (e.g., brighter colors), laughter, and altered perception of time.

The cannabis effect dovetails nicely into the VR experience, making a potential great match.

On Reddit and other forums, people share the heightened immersion of a combined experience. From comments, it seems it takes gaming and movies to another level and  makes you feel more alive and tickles your senses.

Today in VR you can attend concerts, ride roller coasterss, game, explore real and fantasy locations, deep sea dive and more. You can also attend meetings, lectures and more – but that is a different experience.

Ray in Seattle says “VR with Marijuana intensifies all your senses and makes it a whole body and mind experience – seeing a concert is the most amazing experience”.

On the flip side, VR writer Reter Rubin did an article for Wired where he is not a fan of the mix. He feels for his personal journey, he prefers the experience be split.

Another perk of a mild high while using is it could eliminate any motion sickness, which can be very distracting.  Both VR and marijuana are on track to have more people engage over the next few years and improvements will only continue.  We will check in and let you know how it is goes.
