Joe Biden’s Toughest Opponent Is His Criminal Justice Record

Former Vice President Joe Biden announced on Thursday that he would seek the Democratic nomination for the presidency. This is Joe Biden’s third run for the presidency in 32 years, and during his long tenure in public service, the Democratic Party has changed dramatically, particularly on issues involving criminal justice and drug policy. It is on these issues that Mr. Biden’s strengths have become his weaknesses.

Mr. Biden’s resume of public service would position him to be the most experienced individual to seek the office of president—including a space of nearly 40 years as a U.S. senator and eight years as a trusted Vice President to Barack Obama. However, it also means Mr. Biden has a long voting record in a party that sees certain issues differently than earlier periods of public service.

Mr. Biden will be criticized widely by progressives, liberals, communities of color, young people, and other key demographic groups within the Democratic Party over his participation in and advancement of the War on Drugs and, and related, his authorship of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994 (also known as the 1994 Crime Bill). The 1994 Crime Bill continued and expanded a criminal justice system that enhanced racial inequities in the enforcement of the law. It expanded the federal government’s use of the death penalty. It included a federal three strikes law. It simultaneously expanded drug testing and restricted opportunities for federal inmates to better themselves.

RELATED: Why Do So Many Americans Now Support Legalizing Marijuana?

For many groups in the Democratic Party, the Crime Bill was seen as a devastating expansion of the police state disproportionately shouldered by communities of color. It is seen as a law that is racist in part and one that has limited the economic, social, and educational opportunities among demographic groups already facing significant challenges in each. Although many in the Democratic Party see portions of the Crime Bill, including the assault weapons ban and the Violence Against Women Act, as positives, it is Biden’s authorship and support of the law as damning. (It should be noted that the only other 2020 presidential candidate who was serving in Congress in 1994, then-Rep. Bernie Sanders, voted in favor of the bill.)

As chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Mr. Biden pushed legislation that expanded the War on Drugs and as a Senator and Vice President, he did little to reform America’s addiction to treating drug use as a public safety rather than public health problem. Although not the direct cause of the increase, Mr. Biden’s tenure in the Senate saw an explosion in the number of drug arrests in the United States, and his support of legislation (as well as the support of hundreds of other Democrats) helped contribute to it.

And now, a majority of Americans and a supermajority of Democrats see these issues differently than they did in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. According to a 2017 ACLU poll, 9 in 10 Americans see a need to reform the criminal justice system. The same poll found that that “68 percent would be more likely to vote for an elected official if the candidate supported reducing the prison population and using the savings to reinvest in drug treatment and mental health programs” and “72 percent…would be more likely to vote for an elected official who supports eliminating mandatory minimum laws.” According to a 2018 Voice of the People/University of Maryland poll, between 80 and 90 percent of Democrats supported a variety of reductions in mandatory minimum sentencing. And an October 2018 Gallup poll showed that 75 percent of Democrats supported cannabis legalization. This polling shows an electorate with view very different than Sen. Joe Biden’s voting record.

So, what is a law-and-order, 1980s drug warrior to do? Repent.

If Joe Biden wants to be the Democratic nominee in 2020, he needs to face these issues head on, and Mr. Biden may be the best positioned to do so. One benefit the former Vice President has is that many Americans see him as sincere and honest. And while transforming from “Joe Biden, Crime Buster” to “Joe Biden, Criminal Justice Reformer” may be a political calculation, his candidacy depends on his being contrite and convincing.

RELATED: Should Voters Trust 2020 Democrats’ Newfound Support Of Marijuana?

Mr. Biden cannot simply say it was a different time and the public had a different view. (They did.) He cannot simply say that he didn’t realize it would have a disproportionate impact on communities of color. (It’s hard to see how he couldn’t.) He needs to apologize to all Americans for pushing legislation that hurt America. He needs to say that he made a mistake and that he knows that lives were lost, opportunity was foregone, and families were ruined because of laws he helped pass. He needs to speak passionately and eloquently about the impact of his work and the problems it has caused. Finally, he needs to explain, in detail, how he will not simply apologize for his past actions, but right them. He needs to issue detailed plans around criminal justice reform, drug policy, policing, mental health policy, and drug treatment policy. He needs to convey to Americans that he has learned the hard lessons of his past and that his presidency is his opportunity to heal the wounds he helped inflict.

Would a mea culpa of that magnitude help convince every Democratic voter that Mr. Biden is a different person? No. But a sincere and convincing approach to these issues will benefit the former vice president in multiple ways. First, he will convince some voters that he is a reformed person who has seen light. Second, he will help blunt (not eliminate) attacks that would destroy him as a primary candidate if he opted not to apologize. Third, in the event he wins the nomination, it may help him convince voters on the left to turn out to vote for him, even if they are not enthused about his candidacy. Finally, it can show voters that an old dog can learn new tricks and that one of those new tricks can be compassion emerging from listening to the concerns of everyday Americans—a seeming rarity in American politics.

Or, Mr. Biden can hold firm to his past views on all of these issues (and others), opt not to repent, and ensure that the 2020 Democratic presidential primary is his third strike.

Kate Beckinsale ‘Splits’ From Comedian Pete Davidson; Justin Bieber And Ed Sheeran Tease Secret Project

Kate Beckinsale ‘splits’ from comedian Pete Davidson

Kate Beckinsale and Pete Davidson have apparently called it quits on their three-month romance.

According to Entertainment Tonight, The Widow star and Saturday Night Live comedian parted ways amicably. “They’re still friendly but are not on romantic terms,” the source allegedly told the publication.

These rumours should be taken with a pinch of salt however, as PEOPLE are reporting that the pair are “still dating” but have just “decided to slow things down a bit” because they “got super serious very fast.”

Elsewhere, another insider told Page Six that Beckinsale “struggled with the attention on her relationship with Pete” and the fact that “he lives his life with his heart on his sleeve.” The same outlet states that it was not the couple’s much-talked-about age difference that contributed towards their split.

Beckinsale, 45, was first linked to Davidson, 25, when they were spotted leaving a Golden Globes after party together on 6 January. Since then, they have been photographed packing on the PDA at numerous events including a New York Rangers hockey game at Madison Square Garden in early March.

Justin Bieber & Ed Sheeran Tease Secret Project

Ed’s manager, Stuart Camp, posted a photo of the 28-year-old singer standing in front of a green screen while staring at the camera. “This guy! Something is happening,” he captioned the post.

It didn’t take long before fans realized that Stuart’s caption and photo was an almost exact replica of a post Justin’s manager, Scooter Braun, posted just last week. “This guy! Something is happening. Love it,” Scooter captioned the similar photo of Justin staring at the camera in front of a green screen.

Clearly, something really is happening! While it’s not clear what exactly that something is, a source close told The Blast the two stars — who have worked together before, Ed co-wrote Justin’s 2015 single “Love Yourself” — are definitely working on a new project together. However, the insider remained tight-lipped when asked if it was new music.

Finding Business Opportunities In The Cannabis Industry

Getting into the legal cannabis industry can be an expensive endeavor. There are significant lead times on building out cultivation capacity for growers. Cultivators and dispensaries need to acquire licenses that can be expensive and limited by regulators. Many jurisdictions require market participants to purchase specific seed-to-sale tracking systems and follow other strict tracking protocols. On top of all of this, security is a much bigger concern than in other similar industries like tobacco and alcohol.

The current murky legal nature of cannabis in the United States makes security much riskier than for other commodities or retail goods. Even in states where recreational use is allowed, the continued federal Schedule I status of cannabis and its derivatives means that providers still exist in a murky environment. Fair or not, they are subject to higher scrutiny and more risk than someone selling baked goods or textiles.

RELATED: Billionaire Mark Cuban Says If He Were To Start A Business Today, It’d Be This

The legal environment also adds an additional wrinkle that other retailers of valuable products don’t face as frequently anymore: significant business transactions taking place with cash. Most banks still won’t do business with cannabis companies and most sales are still done in cash. Holding and dealing with such large quantities of cash on a regular basis makes all plant-touching businesses an obvious target for criminals. This is in addition to the existing threat of employee theft and normal inventory risk during transportation.

As one company’s threats and concerns are opportunities to others, so is security becoming a big opportunity some US firms supporting the cannabis industry today, like Helix TCS (OTC:HLIX). Their recent acquisition of Tan’s International Security helps to make them one of the bigger players in the field of security catering to the cannabis industry. Helix already had their own home-grown security line operating in Colorado. Tan’s California-based operations give it the ability to apply the same business practices that led to their current foothold in Colorado to one of the largest markets in the US.

Helix has been expanding to carve out a slice for itself as a support company for the industry. Their seed-to-sale tracking platform, BioTrackTHC, is required in several large markets. Despite having several competitors, it has one of the larger footprints.

RELATED: The Cannabis Industry’s Top 12 US Multi-State Operators

Now with their expansion into the California security market, they are even better situated to gain from the market’s continued growth without the same level of risk faced by dispensaries and cultivators as they are completely ancillary. The rising supply of cannabis products in legalized markets places strong pressure on margins. The same forces can’t act as quickly in the tracking, security, and other ancillary sub-sectors that support the industry.

The security business complements the Helix seed-to-sale tracking business. They already have the infrastructure to provide identification and tracking of individual plants and their products from the first stages of growth to the point of sale and beyond. The physical components of security can be treated as an addition to an existing business rather than a brand new approach.

The best growth opportunities are the ones that companies can defend even during periods of extreme market change. The US cannabis market is certainly a source of tremendous growth and potential, but the threat of competition from new products and supply is one that can’t be ignored. Business owners will have to find their own niche to go after. Sometimes finding one that isn’t overly saturated and obvious to everyone else is the best approach.

Will Meghan And Harry’s Baby Be A Prince Or Princess?

The next little bundle of royal joy is about to make its way into the world, and right behind “When will Meghan Markle give birth?”, everyone can’t wait to find out if her and Prince Harry’s first child will be a boy or a girl.

And regardless of sex, will baby Sussex have the title of Prince or Princess? The short answer is probably not, unless the Queen intervenes. The law goes way way back to King George V’s 1917 decree that states only the eldest son of the Prince of Wales’s oldest son (William) is entitled to be called His Royal Highness and a Prince. And that honor goes to George.

RELATED: This Is Why Kate Middleton And Meghan Markle Are Not Called ‘Princess’

According to Town & Country, if Meghan gives birth to a baby boy, he will be known as an Earl, and similarly, if Meghan has a baby girl, she’ll be known as a Lady.

However, the Queen has the power to issue her newest grandchild a title if she feels like it.

As for Meghan herself, can she ever become Queen? As fairytale-esque as the idea sounds, she absolutely can not ever be Queen. She can, however, become a Queen Consort.

RELATED: Here’s Why Princess Charlotte’s Kids Probably Won’t Have Royal Titles

According to PureWow, succession to the British throne is regulated by descent, which is why Prince Charles, the Queen’s son, is next in line, followed by her grandson Prince William. But those who marry into the royal family don’t get a place in the line of succession, which is why Kate Middleton will never be the Queen of England, even when her husband Williams takes the throne. Instead, she will receive the title of Queen Consort. If earning the title of Queen was a competition, Queen Consort would be runner-up.

But for Harry, who has a longer wait to be King (he’s fifth in line for the throne, behind Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis ), it’s unlikely he’ll ever see the throne, which means his wife will likely never become Queen Consort. So, basically, when it comes to Harry and his family, the pressure is (almost) off.

People Really Hate The Smell Of Weed On Sidewalks

Marijuana is a pungent fragrance. When you smell a waft of cannabis smoke in the air, there’s no questioning what it is. And for over half of Americans, the smell is becoming a serious problem. Meanwhile, nearly a quarter of people “hate” the smell, according to a major new survey conducted by PSB Research, Civilized, Burson Cohn & Wolfe, and BuzzFeed News.

If you think those attitudes are bad, just wait until you hear how our neighbors to the North react to the smell of marijuana. Despite the plant being legalized nationwide last year, “three in five people think the smell of weed in pubic is a problem and nearly half report disliking or even hating it,” Buzzfeed wrote.

RELATED: What Canopy Growth Buying Acreage Holdings Means For Marijuana Consumers

To conduct the survey, PSB partnered with Civilized, Burson Cohn & Wolfe (BCW), and Buzzfeed News. Together the group interviewed 1,000 American adults (ages 21-plus) online, as well as 602 Canadians (19-plus). Interviews were held between March 12-21 of this year and inquired both the general views, habits, and behaviors between those who identified as cannabis consumers and those who didn’t in each country.

Here’s some other intriguing findings from the survey:

– 84% of American support legalization and 60% favor regulating it with taxes and sales, like alcohol.
– Marijuana use is increasing as 27% of Americans now say they “imbibe.”
– Current marijuana users are not exempt from distasting the smell of cannabis in public. A third of them called it a problem, while 10% said it was a major problem.
– Meanwhile, 27% of non-consumers said it was a “major problem” and 29% labeled it a “minor problem.”
– That said, 41% of Americans admitted they don’t notice the marijuana smell or don’t care.

There you have it, people got some problems with smelling marijuana. From the statistics the survey collected, it doesn’t seem like an overtly significant problem, but a major annoyance for a passionate minority. Our suggestion: If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.

4 Signs You Need To Send Back That Bottle Of Wine

0

A bottle of wine is a surprisingly fragile thing, and I’m not just talking about what happens when you leave it too close to the edge of the table. Despite the best efforts of winemakers and retailers, unfortunately faults and flaws are more common than you’d think. Sometimes that wine you didn’t like wasn’t your thing, but sometimes there’s something wrong with that bottle (or the whole batch). So what can go wrong, and how can you know? The short answer is, you have to use your senses, and talk with the person who’s selling you the wine. Let’s talk about a few of them.

The Wine Smells Like Your Basement

If your wine smells like moldy cardboard or is lacking in any pleasing aromas at all, the chances are that Trichloroanisole (commonly called TCA) is to blame. It’s typically transmitted to the wine via a tainted cork (which is why those wines are often termed “corked”), but TCA can even be present in screw-capped wines, so don’t just assume that if there’s no cork you’re safe.

The Wine Smells Like Vinegar

You’ve probably left a bottle of wine open a bit longer than you should have; if so, you’ve learned that when exposed to oxygen, wine inevitably becomes vinegar. Well, either too much exposure to oxygen during winemaking, or a poorly-closed bottle can do the same thing before you ever open it.

RELATED: 4 Serious Things To Consider When Buying Canned Wine

There are a few classic styles of wine that might have faint hints of vinegar; it’s fairly common in Italian red wines for one, so if this turns you off (or on), talk to your server or sommelier beforehand.

The Wine Smells Like Nail Polish Remover

A whole host of different yeasts can contribute to a wine’s fermentation. Some of them can produce compounds that don’t exactly smell like wine, like ethyl acetate. As with acetic acid above, individual preferences and tolerances can vary, but if you dislike this odor you should be a bit wary of wines that are fermented with wild yeasts, like natural wines. In less experienced hands, fermentations can quickly get out of control and produce some of these off odors.

The Wine Looks Discolored Or Faded

The color pigment in red wines decays over time, so if you’re ordering older bottles (10+ years old), don’t expect a vivid purple. But if you’re buying a relatively new wine, faded or rusty colors might be another sign of oxidation. There are a few varietals (Pinot Noir, Nebbiolo, Grenache) that are naturally low in pigment, but if you’re drinking Syrah or Cabernet Sauvignon, color can be key. The best way to examine color is to hold the bottle at a 45-degree angle away from you and look at both the center of the glass, and how the color changes as you move to the edge of the wine. A significant rim variation in a young red wine is rarely acceptable.

RELATED: Act Like You Know: 4 Key Questions to Ask Your Sommelier

Most of all, don’t be afraid to ask your server and sommelier their opinion. Yes, it can be scary, but restaurants can almost always get a refund from the distributor for a flawed bottle, and in any case they’ll undoubtedly want to make sure that you get the best possible wine in your glass.

Prince Harry Was ‘Worried’ About Not Finding A Partner; Jennifer Garner Works ‘Very Hard’ Not To Read Comments About Herself

Jennifer Garner works ‘very hard’ not to read comments or articles about herself

“They tell me I’m prettier in person than I am on screen,” the actress, 47, tells PEOPLE good-naturedly in this week’s cover story. “You might as well see it for the compliment that they mean it to be. That happens, if I’m out and about, every day at some point. I don’t know what it is, but that is by far what I hear the most.”

Garner insists she feels “really lucky” because the fans she typically meets “tend to feel like I’m the girl they grew up next to or an old friend, and they want to continue a conversation that I didn’t know we were having,” she says, laughing.

As for the Internet, the actress never pays attention to anything about herself in the media. “Zero. Not only do I not read comments, I work very hard to not see the pictures, to not read articles or to know what’s out there at all,” she says. “And it’s not that I don’t care, it’s that I care too much. Instagram is a different story because I don’t get a lot of people being mean.”

“I want to just keep doing what I’m doing,” Garner says.

Prince Harry was ‘worried’ about not finding a partner

Britain’s Prince Harry was deeply concerned about what the future held for him before American actress Meghan Markle came along.

After a whirlwind romance, the couple tied the knot in a televised ceremony in May 2018. Markle, 37, and Harry, 34, are expecting their first child sometime this spring.

“Harry, at one point, was genuinely worried that he was going to be left on the shelf,” royal expert Katie Nicholl told Fox News.

“His brother [Prince William] was happily married with children,” she explained. “Many of his friends, who up until that point had been eternal bachelors, were getting engaged, getting married. I think Harry genuinely worried about that, and one of the reasons he worried about that was because he wanted to find his life partner, and he wanted to be a dad. Harry wanted children for a very long time.”

RELATED: This Is The Code Phrase That Will Be Used When The Queen Dies

“I was told by one of their friends that Harry would travel to Toronto in those early weeks of their courtship with just one protection officer, in a baseball cap, dressed down, looking absolutely ordinary, not always flying in first-class,” said Nicholl. “He deliberately entered out those journeys to Meghan being as normal as possible, and then some days he’d go to her house and come out with friends. They were seen in Meghan’s neighborhood all before it was public knowledge that they were a couple.”

“Everything moved quickly,” said Nicholl in a previous interview back in 2018, before the wedding. “According to sources I spoke to, they’ve both settled at Nottingham Cottage. She had her clothes and many of her belongings shipped over [from Toronto]…. They’ve managed to do that all very quietly and very below the radar.”

In October of last year, Markle and Harry revealed to the world they were expecting — an announcement Nicholl wasn’t shocked by.

Young People Experience Arthritis Too And Cannabis Can Help

Arthritis is the umbrella term for literally hundreds of joint-related disorders, pretty much all of them painful, including rheumatoid arthritis and the most common form, osteoarthritis. Though often associated with aging, arthritis doesn’t discriminate. Approximately 54 million Americans have been diagnosed with arthritis and 7 percent of those tens of millions are 18-44 year olds.

There are many ways to treat the discomfort that comes with arthritis—from creams to pills to joint wraps—but ofttimes the best medicine is all-natural. In many arthritic cases the very best medicine is actually cannabis, which also comes in a variety of forms, such as capsules, tinctures and salves.

RELATED: There’s No Known Cure For Arthritis, But Marijuana Works Wonders

So how best can arthritic pain be relieved with marijuana? It depends on the situation and how active of a lifestyle you lead. For a 21-year-old athlete experiencing arthritic symptoms, salves used in conjunction with what the doctor ordered may just do the trick without any of the side effects of cannabis, like getting high. But truly, whenever possible, the best answer is a combination of cannabis remedies.

Creams and salves are obvious choices, as you can rub in the soothing lotion, which is often combined with other medicinal herbs, right where it hurts. Not all lotions and potions are created equal, though. If you’re in a legal or medical state, use a cream with activated THC along with other cannabinoids and plant components (they won’t alter mindsets if that’s a concern). If you don’t live in a legalized state, a hemp/CBD cream will also help, just look for the words “full-spectrum” or for other cannabinoids to be named.

All told, a mixture of methods will help alleviate the pain in more ways, thus providing more relief. Adding an oral tincture to the rub remedy helps to loosen up stiff joints throughout the body. As arthritis is often caused by inflamed tissue between the joints, the anti-inflammatory aspect of cannabis really helps mitigate tender and sore areas by bringing down swelling.

Luckily, for states that haven’t gone all the way green yet, non-psychoactive CBD concoctions are also known to be anti-inflammatory. All cannabinoids are utilized by the body’s own endocannabinoid system, where they fit in like puzzle pieces. The system runs throughout the body and brain, thus relieving pain pretty much wherever when ingested, smoked or vaped. Layering topicals, tinctures and toking is a surefire way to feel better all around, and all aforementioned methods kick in almost immediately, so they’re easy to gauge if indeed psychoactive.

RELATED: Study: Medical Marijuana Has Serious Anti-Arthritic Capabilities

If the arthritis calls for the big dogs, it’s time to bring in capsules made of full spectrum hemp oil, high-THC cannabis oil or an activated edible. If taking either of the latter two, wait at least an hour after the initial dose before taking more to see where your pain level and headspace land. Unlike vaping, smoking, rubbing lotions or dropping tinctures, edibles and capsules take awhile to kick in, but then they really go to work, offering a heavy body high and maximum relief.

No matter what age arthritis hits, cannabis can help put stiff joints in motion, relieve swollen tissue and make for a higher quality of life. Movement is key whether 44 and under, in the senior bracket or somewhere in between. Add some flexibility and relief to living with arthritis by using the cannabinoids available to you and that work best with your lifestyle.
