Netflix Reveals Most Watched Shows And Movies Of 2018

Netflix keeps their cards close to their chest, very much like Apple and other successful companies adored by the public. The streaming company has managed to grow through some smart and risky decisions and by maintaining social media profiles that look like they’re run by a bunch of tech savvy teens. The result is funny and annoying, getting the job done and gathering more and more followers with each passing day.

Breaking tradition, Netflix uploaded a chart with their most viewed TV shows and movies of 2018. Amidst their gargantuan amount of content that they put out, the names on this list are pretty recognizable, having taken over social media for weeks at a time and showing off ads and publicity in some of the world’s most important places.

The post uploaded on Netflix’s media center begins with a short introduction that manages to squeeze in a bunch of references to their own shows and movies. It’s cheesy, but Netflix knows you’ll still read it.

Netflix’s charts disclose that their most viewed movies of the year were The Kissing Booth, To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, and Roxanne Roxanne. Interestingly enough, the first two movies were also re-watched by 50 percent of those viewers.

The most binged TV shows of the year include “On My Block”, “13 Reasons Why,” “Bodyguard,” “Orange Is The New Black” and “The Haunting of Hill House.” The order in some of these rankings sounds off, especially since some of these shows and movies had no presence online. But since Netflix doesn’t disclose their stats, all we can do is trust them.

Martha Stewart Eats Marijuana Edibles, Says ‘They’re Fine’

Martha Stewart discussed her friendship with Snoop Dogg during an appearance on the Wendy Williams Show and wouldn’t you know, the topic of marijuana was brought up. Stewart was describing a story to Snoop’s Los Angeles compound when host Wendy Williams couldn’t resist asking if Stewart puffs or passes.

“I pass,” said Stewart. “I just try to breathe. I just breathe.”

Whether that means Stewart breathes to absorb the secondhand marijuana smoke, or is desperate for oxygen amidst the milky cannabis clouds remains up for debate. Sadly Williams did not follow up for clarification.

Instead Williams reminded Stewart that edibles weren’t “smoky.” What about those? Did Stewart try one of those while in Snoop’s good company?

No, Stewart replied, she didn’t try edibles that weekend. However, she did admit to trying them before.

“I’ve tried,” she told Williams, adding, “What’s an edible? It’s like a little gummy bear or something. They’re fine.”

There ya go. Edibles are “fine,” according to Martha Stewart.

This isn’t Stewart’s first association with edibles either. She has after all shown us how to make pot brownies. And Stewart has flirted with entering the cannabis industry on a larger scale, as she’s said that companies have approached her to produced edibles and ointments as a new brand line.

“As it becomes recreationally approved, I think I probably would be more interested in it,” Stewart told The Hollywood Reporter in June. “I’ve been asked to design recipes and even ointments.”

In the time it takes you to figure out where you want to summer vacation, you can potentially find the person you’re going to marry. According to new statistic, the average person needs less than six months to consider if someone is worth tying the knot with.

On average, married people took just 172 days in their relationship before making up their minds on a spouse, according to a new scientific study. Single people, on the other hand, estimated it would take 210 days.

According to the researchers at the University of Chicago:

People readily categorize things as good or bad, a welcome adaptation that enables action and reduces information overload. The present research reveals an unforeseen consequence: People do not fully appreciate this immediacy of judgment, instead assuming that they and others will consider more information before forming conclusions than they and others actually do.

But as it turns out, we need way less information than we think to make a decision. And, we’re a lot less picky.

The study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found that even in today’s age of information overload, we don’t actually want or need it:
Presumably, one hopes that easy access to abundant information fosters uniformly more-informed opinions and perspectives. The present research suggests mere access is not enough: Even after paying costs to acquire and share ever-more information, people then stop short and do not incorporate it into their judgments.

The study concluded that in today’s information age, “people may intuitively believe that exchanging ever-more information will foster better-informed opinions and perspectives—but much of this information may be lost on minds long made up.”

LeafLink Says Alaska, Maryland Most Expensive Place To Buy Cannabis

Earlier this week, the cannabis technology platform LeafLink released its 2018 Wholesale Cannabis Pricing Guide and the company learned that Alaska and Maryland are the two most expensive states to buy legal cannabis, followed by Nevada and California.

Examining the wholesale landscape of some of the most mature cannabis markets in the United States, the guide looks at the average wholesale price of cannabis in eight states: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Maryland, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington. The product types covered by the report include concentrates, cartridges, edibles, flower, and pre-rolls.

Although the report does not dive into the specifics of why one state is more expensive than another, the authors speculate that the Alaska and Maryland’s high prices are due to the states having a low number of cannabis cultivators. In the two states where cannabis is cheapest, Washington and Oregon, there is currently a glut of cannabis cultivators; leading to low prices and oversupply.

“As the standard wholesale marketplace for the industry’s leading brands, we are able to provide crucial market information to cannabis retailers and brands, which will help inform their plans for 2019,” said LeafLink Co-Founder and CEO Ryan G. Smith in a statement. “As more states like Massachusetts, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Michigan continue to establish wholesale operations, we will be able to provide a larger scope of market activity to further empower the LeafLink community, as well as the industry at large.”

Nationwide, the average price for a pound of cannabis flower is $2,124 per pound, while a gram of pre-rolls costs around $5.66 per gram. The average price for cannabis concentrates costs approximately $26.07 per gram and cartridges are priced at around $39.55 per gram. Edible cannabis products, on average, cost around $0.20 per milligram.

When taken on a state-by-state level, cannabis prices start to vary. With regards to cannabis consumer preferences, the report found that consumers prefer products in the lowest 25% price range. The exception to this was pre-rolls. On average, consumers preferred pre-roll products in the 25%-49.99% price range.

The report also examined the relationship between pricing and discounted sales. On average, approximately 16% of the products sold through LeafLink’s platform have a discounted price. Across all eight states examined, discounted products generated 3% more sales than regularly priced products.

The discount effect is magnified when combined with larger sales campaigns. During the last year, LeafLink ran two sales promotions, one in the month leading up to 4/20 (dubbed 3/20) and one in July called 7/10; which is a considered an industry-wide “holiday” for concentrates.

When combined with those larger sales campaigns, discounted products generated 37% more sales on 3/20 and 38% more sales on 7/10. This seems to suggest that cannabis retailers stand to significantly boost their sales numbers by combining sales promotions with discounted cannabis products.

Miley Cyrus Blames Her Mom For Being Back On The Weed

A few years removed from declaring “weed is the best drug on earth,” then demonizing marijuana to promote wholesome values amidst a 2017 apology tour, Miley Cyrus is back on her bullshit. By that, we mean she’s smoking marijuana again.

The reason why? Because her mom’s doing it. Apparently, Miley’s “mom smokes a lot of weed.”

“My mom got me back on it,” Miley said during a SiriusXM interview. “When I’m just working I don’t think I function at my highest, most intelligent, most being-able-to-be-as-aware-and-as-present, so I don’t smoke when I work.”

Miley also joked her mom almost quit being her manager to start a life as marijuana farmer.

“My dad’s got a farm and she’s like ‘I’m just going to quit everything and grow.’ She’s my manager,” Miley said. “So if my mom quits everything, that’s quitting me to go home and, like, grow weed.  Which doesn’t sound like the best idea. … My mom could barely keep us alive. She’s not going to grow pot.”

We apologize for the possibly exasperated tone, but why are we still talking about this? No one likes to hear themselves talk more about how much or little cannabis they smoke than Miley Cyrus. She has no allegiance or agency toward marijuana, it seems. She promotes it when it’s profitable to do so and decries weed when it’s not.

Equally problematic is the media’s odd fascination with Miley’s marijuana habits. She’s always asked about it. And she’s only asked because who would expect someone like Miley—a blonde-hair, blue-eye good ol’ American darling—to smoke weed? In other words, if Miley wasn’t white, and didn’t so obviously invite controversy like a 15-year-old Los Angeles brat wearing a $150 limited-edition shirt that literally said “CONTROVERSIAL,” would anyone care?

Nope. And neither should you. Smoke weed if you want, Miley Cyrus. Or don’t, we don’t really care. But please just stop talking about it. We don’t need to know anymore about your weed habits.

“Cute Aggression” is the scientific term used to describe that violent feeling you get when you see something that’s unbearably cute. It’s not something that people discuss openly, because it’s a little embarrassing, but it’s there in all of us when we look at a particularly cute and tiny baby or some adorable animal.

This term was coined by Rebecca Dyer and Oriana Aragon in 2013 when the two were graduate students of Yale University. They ran an experiment that analyzed subjects’ responses to adorable images, looking to see how prevalent cute aggression was. The research found that the cuter the picture, the more aggressive the response was from people. “So cute I could… die, eat you up, kill you, maul you,” said one of the subjects. Creepy, but also relatable.

Katherine Stavropoulos, professor at the University of California, conducted another study on cute aggression and theorized that these findings could help us figure out how our brain rewards center works. “These are very cute things that you might want to approach. You might want to take care of them. You’re having very positive feelings—in fact, so many feelings that you’re overwhelmed by them. To me, that sounds like a very, very active reward system,” she said on an interview with The Atlantic. Stavropoulos tests took things further than the Yale study of 2013, mapping out subjects’ brain activity through the use of EEG caps while showing them images of cute babies and animals. The study concluded that cute aggression flares when you’re brain is overwhelmed – when something is too cute to handle and your emotions don’t know how to cope with it.

Scientists theorize that when you feel cute aggression, the best way to express it is to smudge your puppy or squeeze the baby. Once you do this, you release these energies and can go back to being the caretaker that nature meant you to be. “A baby can’t survive alone, but if you’re so overwhelmed by how cute it is and how much you love it, then you can’t take care of it, and that baby won’t survive.” The violence acts as a countermeasure, balancing out your feelings.

So, now you know. Don’t feel embarrassed when your dog or a baby on the subway make you want to punch something; it’s your brain’s natural response to the cuteness. Hug your dog. Just don’t hug a stranger’s baby.

New Zealand Legalizes Medical Marijuana, Makes It Widely Available

New Zealanders have been campaigning for years for legal access to cannabis medicine, and their persistence has finally paid off. The country’s legislative brass recently passed a law that will make medical marijuana widely available to tens of thousands of patients living with a variety of health conditions. It is a move that will be especially beneficial to those folks living in constant pain, according to various reports.

On Tuesday, New Zealand’s government decided that medical marijuana should be made available to more patients over time. In addition to allowing those with chronic pain conditions to get their hands on the herb, the new law will also provide access to the terminally ill, allowing them to start smoking marijuana immediately with the threat of legal repercussions. Most patients, however, will have to wait another year while the regulatory affairs are being hashed out.

“People nearing the end of their lives should not have to worry about being arrested or imprisoned for trying to manage their pain,” health minister David Clarke told the Guardian. “This is compassionate and caring legislation that will make a real difference to people … they can use illicit cannabis without fear of prosecution.”

The move is considered a progressive pathway for the country as it considers entering into a fully legal marijuana market. New Zealanders are expected to decide on a nationwide referendum in the next couple of years whether the nation is fit for recreational marijuana in the same way as Uruguay, Canada and a handful of America states.

Therefore, laying the initial infrastructure through medical marijuana was a logical first step.

“New Zealanders will take this as encouragement that we don’t need to be stuck in the past,” Sandra Murray, campaign manager for the #makeitlegal campaign, saidin a statement. “We are now only two steps behind the rest of the world when it comes to sensible cannabis laws and with the upcoming referendum, we are on track to become an example of how to get it right.”

The new law will give cannabis companies the ability to produce marijuana products for distribution in the local and international markets. Many of the nation’s struggling economies will likely benefit the most, as the legal cultivation and sale of cannabis will create new jobs and opportunities for the most impoverished communities.

Marijuana consumption is common throughout New Zealand, but police do not mess with the small-time offenders. It is the illicit trade that consumes the majority of their focus. There is hope the new law with put a dent in the illicit trade. Still, some opposing forces argue that the way the nation is going about the new medical marijuana scheme is “lazy and dangerous.” The cynics say the new medical marijuana law decriminalizes marijuana use by stealth, which could lead to an uprising in public consumption.

“We support medicinal cannabis but strongly oppose the smoking of loose leaf cannabis in public. Smoked loose leaf is not a medicine,”said the Nationals’ spokesperson on health, Shane Reti.

Regulations and licensing for the medical marijuana program are expected to be put into place within the next year.

In an interview with The New York Times, published Wednesday, Ellen DeGeneres reveals she wavered before extending her contract through the summer of 2020. She goes back and forth on the subject, consulting her brother, another comic, and wife Portia De Rossi along the way.

A 32-time Emmy Award winner, DeGeneres says de Rossi is in favor of her leaving the daytime talk show, while her brother believes television audiences needs her daily dose of positivity. “She gets mad when my brother tells me I can’t stop,” DeGeneres says of her wife, whom she married in 2008.

De Rossi counters, “I just think she’s such a brilliant actress and standup that it doesn’t have to be this talk show for her creativity. There are other things she could tackle.” No matter what happens, de Rossi explains, “I don’t see the end of her show as her career ending.”

DeGeneres says she would love to do another movie and play “someone unappealing” for once. Regarding rumors she’s nasty to staff members off camera, DeGeneres bristles. “That bugs me if someone is saying that because it’s an outright lie. The first day I said: ‘The one thing I want is everyone here to be happy and proud of where they work, and if not, don’t work here,’” the host explains. “No one is going to raise their voice or not be grateful. That’s the rule to this day.”

Of course, it’s possible DeGeneres is just misunderstood. “She’s just a bit more complicated than she appears on the show,” de Rossi tells the newspaper. “There’s more range of emotion.”

5 Things You Need To Know About Running In The Winter

Outdoor runners are subject to their environment, which can make or break their plans on a whim. While a rainy day mid-summer is a bummer because it derails your workout plans, there’s not a lot you can do when it’s winter and you’re someone who’s not into sweating while it’s 20 degrees out. There are runners who are out there no matter the time or weather, and you can be one of those just as long as you prepare yourself on different levels.

“Working out in the elements makes you stronger physically and mentally,” said Elizabeth Corkum, a trainer of  Mile High Run Club. She spoke to the New York Post and explained the benefits of the activity, which build up your endurance, help you burn more calories, develop more muscle, and allow you to work out for longer periods of time. Running while it’s snowing, raining, or very cold is certainly tougher than jogging while it’s sunny out, but the benefits are plenty and well documented.

Despite all of this, you can’t just start jogging in shorts and a sweater, especially if the weather is particularly brutal. Stretching before working out is always important, especially in the winter. Even if the task is boring and repetitive, it warms up your body and prevents injuries on your muscles and ligaments.  You can do something simple like three to five minutes of jumping jacks and high knees.

When jogging outdoors you should treasure the challenge but also be reasonable. If there’s a snow storm it’s best to just stay home or workout in the gym. Corkum advises foregoing outdoor running if the temperature hits the tens or the single digits and if there’s poor visibility.

When it’s warm out it’s easy to remember to drink water, since the heat and exertion make you thirsty. In the winter, your body needs the same amount of water, so you need to remind yourself to drink some periodically even if you’re not feeling thirsty or dehydrated.

If you’re doing cardio outdoors Corkum suggests dressing “for the temperature it is, plus 20 degrees.” We normally warm up after 10 minutes of exercise so overdressing can become a real problem, making you peel off layers that you’ll later have to lug around because you probably aren’t carrying a backpack. If it’s particularly windy or very cold, be sure to put on extra leggings and a light workout jacket.
