This Is The Crazy Effect Meghan Markle Is Having On Baby Names

0

Meghan Markle’s reach has far extended beyond the palace walls. She’s so popular, more babies are being named “Meghan” than ever before.

After Markle and Prince Harry got married, the name Meghan (with an “h”) spiked 49-percent, according to the website Baby Center, which assumes her own baby’s name will also be influential in 2019.

When Markle and Harry’s in-laws, Prince William and Kate Middleton, welcomed baby Louis in April, the name jumped 17-percent in popularity for boys.

It’s also expected that the assumed offspring of Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank, who got hitched in October, will also play a role in influencing baby names when/if it arrives.

In related news, according to International Business Times, the “Meghan Markle Effect” has also extended its tastemaker status to fashion. Global fashion search platform Lyst reports searches for halter neck dresses were up by 40-percent after her royal wedding in May. The term “halter neck tops” spiked 20 percent.

10 Perfect Tweets About Christmas Tree Struggles

The holiday season can be both amazing and trying, and the two are not necessarily mutually exclusive. The things that bring us the most joy, like sharing presents and spending quality time with loved ones, also produce a batch of side effects that are expensive and stressful.

One of the biggest moments of Christmas is setting up the tree, which brings a large host of problems of its own. Should you buy a real tree or a fake one? What about the decorations? Will it even fit in your apartment? What if it catches fire? And who the hell is going to help you take it to the dumpster after?

There are no solutions to these problems because setting up the Christmas tree is always awful. You’ll just have to figure things out as they come along and try to have a good time.

The following tweets, compiled by The Huffington Post, encapsulate the drama and relatability of Christmas tree struggles. While we’re sure that during these incidents the people involved weren’t having the best time, all of us readers can appreciate their misery from a safe distance. Check out 10 of our favorites:

Former Detroit Lions Denied Entry To Michigan Medical Marijuana Business

Investors and entrepreneurs alike have rushed to enter Michigan’s nascent cannabis industry. Two gentlemen who won’t be involved in the freshly vibrant scene, however, are hometown football heroes and former Detroit Lions Calvin Johnson and Robert Sims.

As more football players turn to cannabis treatment for injury recovery and pain relief instead of dangerous opioids, Johnson and Sim represented a bridge between those skeptics in the football community and supporters in the cannabis industry. That bridge crumbled Friday when the Michigan Licensing Board denied Johnson and Sims’ prequalification for the pair’s marijuana venture, which would have included a dispensary, grow operation, and marijuana processing facility.

“There is great interest because of head injuries and there are a number of football players looking into the research with cannabis and oils and the impact it might have on brain injuries,” John Truscott, a spokesman for Johnson, told the Detroit Free Press. “And there are a lot of professional athletes who are interested in the business as they look at 20 years down and how it may impact them.”

The board’s concerns stemmed from a couple unpaid traffic tickets in Georgia belonging to Johnson. A couple of rental properties owned by Sims weren’t up to proper codes as well, according to officials.

“[In regards to the traffic tickets,] one is nine years old and one is four years old and there are warrants out,” board member Donald Bailey told the Free Press. “They’re minor, maybe even meaningless, but the problem is their response (noting that Johnson hadn’t disclosed the tickets in his marijuana license application). We’re entering this highly regulated market. And if this is their response, that’s a problem for me.”

Truscott said the traffic tickets were resolved as soon Johnson learned of them. Because of frequent moving between places during his football playing days, the tickets got lost in the shuffle. A spokesman for Sims also said his housing matter has been resolved.

CRJJA Ventures, the group that applied for the licenses, is expected to appeal the decision.

“What’s happened is kind of ridiculous. We’ve put a lot of work into this. It would be hard to see how you could have a better candidate for a license.” Truscott said. “We’ve done everything by the book. But just like football, we’ve had some hard times, but we’ll get back up.”

Sonic The Hedgehog Has Weirdly Sculpted Legs In His Live Action Movie Poster

Every big studio in Hollywood is trying to get their hands on whatever video game, novel or comic book they can, just so they can create a cinematic universe of their own. From the Avengers, to Pokemon, to whatever you can think of, studios are squeezing the juice out of everything they can in order to make a halfway decent movie that makes them a lot of money.

Sonic The Hedgehog is next. Initially a video game character with super speed and not a whole lot of plot or backstory, Sonic’s movie will be produced by Paramount Studios and will star Ben Schwartz as the voice of the eponymous hedgehog, and Jim Carrey as the evil doctor Ivo Robotnik. That all looks good on paper. What doesn’t look good is Sonic’s muscled and hairy legs.

Paramount’s movie poster finally gives viewers an image of what they’re in for, which is a “humanized” Sonic who wears bright red sneakers and has powerful runner’s thighs. That makes sense: if you run a lot you have muscles. The thing is that when you see a cute blue cartoon in a video game, it doesn’t mean that once it’s brought out into the real world it’ll look good. To be honest, Sonic just looks kind of gross.

Sonic The Hedgehog is set for release in winter 2019, leaving us a lot of time to imagine and speculate on how terrifying Sonic’s face will look when it finally hits theaters.

‘Game of Thrones’ Star Warns Fans: Don’t Believe Everything You Read About Final Season

The lengths HBO and the Game of Thrones production staff has gone to avoid spoilers for the show’s final season is beyond admirable. Actually, it’s almost insane. Scripts only accessible through an encrypted app, directors shooting fake scenes, “drone killers.”; you would almost assume this is the biggest show on television.

Now, in an interview with Sky News, actor Richard Dormer revealed another tidbit to demonstrate how far the show goes to protect its spoilers. Dormer, who plays fire-sword wielding, eyepatch-wearing Beric Dondarrion, admitted the show leaks some news on purpose.

“I suppose it’s good for the show because it gets people talking, and sometimes I suppose they even leak stuff on purpose,” he said. “It’s all good for the show, but we find it kind of annoying because we want fans to see it on screen and go, ‘Oh my god, I can’t believe it.’ You don’t want it to be spoiled, you want it to be a piece of entertainment that is constantly keeping you on your toes.”

This helps explain some of the cryptic musings other GoT actors have dropped in recent months. From Maisie Williams posting bloody sneakers on Instagram, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau hinting steamy relationship drama between Jaime Lannister and Brienne of Tarth, and the Night King indicating Episode 3 of the new season will feature the “biggest battle” in TV history, actors have kept fans salivating. And perhaps that’s all by design, if Dormer is to be believed.

Oh, and Game of Thrones showrunners shot multiple endings for the finale. If any of this causes you anticipatory consternation, don’t worry. Just do like GoT stars and chill out by getting high in bathtubs.

World Health Organization Postpones International Scheduling Of Cannabis

0

There was hope that the World Health Organization (WHO) would come forward before the end of the year with a recommendation for amending the dangerous drug classification of the cannabis plant within the confines of the international drug treaties, but that seems unlikely at this juncture.

The U.N.’s  health agency recently announced that it was postponing its high-anticipated cannabis rescheduling reveal, as it has yet to complete a thorough review of all the evidence collected during its investigation.

Earlier this year, WHO said it was compiling information on the cannabis plant, including scientific data, the thoughts of global governments and public testimony, in an attempt to reevaluate whether cannabis belongs the same ranks as other Schedule I drugs. The agency was expected to have a report ready to go by sometime in early December – presenting it at the latest Commission on Narcotic Drugs in Vienna — but WHO now says it needs more time before it can appraise the situation.

The agency’s indecision has cannabis advocates in a state of discontent. Many representatives of global governments showed up last week expecting to perhaps bear witness to a historic day in the realm of international cannabis reform. But little did they know the agency would brush off the issue until a later time. This has many concerned because they say WHO’s inaction could cause a dust-up in March 2019 when member states are expected to take up a vote on the marijuana issue. They feel countries need time to review the recommendations before making a final vote.

“The fact that the recommendations weren’t made today as expected could mean that when the time comes to decide what to do with the recommendations in March, it will be easier for certain countries to argue that they didn’t have enough time to review the inputs to have a position, possibly delaying the process once again,” Bruno Javier Faraone Machado, permanent representative of Uruguay to the United Nations told Marijuana Business Daily.

There is no doubt the U.N. is feeling pressure to make some changes to its drug policy. In October, the International Drug Consortium released a report calling the UN’s drug war a “spectacular failure of policy.” It found that marijuana is the leading drug of choice when it comes to illicit trafficking and use.

Many believed the IDPC report combined with the fact that countries like Uruguay and Canada, as well as a growing number of American states, have legalized cannabis for recreational consumption, would be a catalyst to downgrading cannabis within the boundaries of international law. And it still could.

Over the summer, WHO published a report saying that marijuana was a “relatively safe drug” that causes no significant health issues.

The agency has yet to say when it is expected to complete its review.

Green Market Report: 2018 Farm Bill To Legalize CBD, Give Hemp Farmers Crop Insurance

The 2018 Farm Bill was expected to be voted on this Monday, December 10, but that didn’t happen. It’s possible it will still come to a vote this week. It is expected to pass with language legalizing hemp farming. It seems a compromise has been reached between the politicians on issues that had been stalling the legislation.

Hemp farmers and CBD-related companies will benefit the most from the passage of the Farm Bill. CBD or cannabidiol is derived from the cannabis plant but has none of the psychotropic effects of THC. In The Farm Bill, there is language that amends the Controlled Substances Act and legalizes CBD. The passage reads as follows:

‘(B) The term ‘marihuana’ does not include— 10 ‘‘(i) hemp, as defined in section 297A of the 11 Agricultural Marketing Act of 1946; or 12 ‘‘(ii) the’’. 13 (b) TETRAHYDROCANNABINOL.—Schedule I, as set 14 forth in section 202(c) of the Controlled Substances Act 15 (21 U.S.C. 812(c)), is amended in subsection (c)(17) by 16 inserting after ‘‘Tetrahydrocannabinols’’ the following: ‘‘, 17 except for tetrahydrocannabinols in hemp (as defined 18 under section 297A of the Agricultural Marketing Act of 19 1946)’’.

It is expected to be removed from the DEA’s schedule 1 list to schedule 5, which is the lowest level and would lift the DEA’s restrictions. CBD products have already begun to explode in the marketplace in anticipation of these changes.

“The cannabis industry is closely watching the outcome of the Farm Bill. And while we are seeing a lot of startups try to move in, nobody is better suited to operate in this market than experienced licensed cannabis manufacturers,” said Nancy Whiteman, founder, and CEO of Wana Brands, makers of cannabis-infused products.” Marijuana-infused producers have been perfecting precise dosing, testing, and supply chains for the past decade, and these companies will lead the way in the next generation of CBD products.”  Wana Brands has the leading THC gummy in Colorado, but it will be producing a CBD only version in 2019.

GW Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: GWPH) had its drug Epidiolex approved by the FDA earlier this year and removed from the schedule 1 category. This medicine though has a very high level of CBD, unlike the mass-market versions which have fairly low levels of CBD. Plus, patients know exactly what they are getting with the prescription drug. Consumers purchasing mass market CBD products generally have no idea how much CBD is in the product or how it was manufactured.

“What is known about CBD is only the tip of the iceberg,” said Lisa Richards, co-CEO, L’eela CBD Body Care:  Consumers are just starting to understand the benefits of CBD, and when the floodgates open, they are going to need to be educated and be their own advocates. Hemp may be federally legal with the passage of the Farm Bill. However, more importantly, where is it sourced? How is it processed? The passage of the Farm Bill is only the first chapter.” All L’eela products are made with hemp that is grown and processed in the United States.

Many companies use CBD oil that is made from Chinese hemp. In 2017, the FDA issued warning letters to several CBD companies. The products didn’t contain the level of CBD that they claimed or the companies made marketing claims about health conditions for which there was no scientific proof. With these new changes, the industry has a better chance of creating standards so that consumers can make educated choices.

The Farmers

In addition to boosting the product sales of CBD brands, the Farm Bill will benefit hemp farmers. Chase Terwilliger, CEO of CBDistillery, a Balanced Health Botanicals brand said that the biggest benefit to hemp farmers is that they will be able to buy crop insurance. Most farmers have this type of insurance to protect them from weather or anything else that could hurt a harvest. Hemp has only been approved from a research standpoint and so it wasn’t eligible for crop insurance.

There is a big desire to shift some of the Chinese production of hemp back to the United States. One reason Senator McConnell has been supporting the inclusion of hemp in the Farm Bill is that it gives tobacco farmers in Kentucky a way to keep their farms productive.

“Hemp is fairly inexpensive to grow and maintain,” he said. “But we hear from farmers that harvesting is a big challenge because the farm equipment isn’t designed to handle the product which is extremely fibrous.” Terwilliger also noted that hemp is a very absorbent plant and with China’s pollution, their hemp plants tend to have heavy metal exposure. “Consumers deserve a high-quality hemp plant,” he said.

Farmers have already begun carving out small sections of their farms to begin testing hemp. 100 acres was seen as a little risk. Now, it is expected that many farmers will quickly make the switch if the plant is legal.

Options

Terwilliger also noted that like traditional agriculture, there could soon be hemp futures. Farmers like futures contracts on their crops as it locks in a price. Options traders will buy and sell these instruments like any other agricultural product. “It will turn into a commodity that futures can trade on,” he said.

Kathie Lee Gifford Quits ‘Today’ Show; Jennifer Garner Is Pumping The Breaks With Her New Boyfriend

0

Jennifer Garner has slowed things down with her new boyfriend

“Privately, she has told friends she doesn’t want to be deeply committed at the moment,” a source tells Entertainment Tonight.

“She wants to focus on family, career and getting Ben back on track. She enjoys her time with him but she has concerns of moving too quickly because she doesn’t want to be disappointed. Her friends are in full support of her stepping back a bit because they all know relationships take a lot of work and right now her plate is full.”

Kathie Lee Gifford Just Quit ‘Today Show’

NBC News chief Noah Oppenheim announced this morning that Kathie Lee Gifford has decided to exit Today show, where she has hosted the final hour of the four-hour franchise since 2008.

From: “Noah Oppenheim

It is with mixed emotions that I share the news Kathie Lee Gifford has decided it’s time to leave TODAY.

As we all know, Kathie Lee’s plate has been overflowing lately with film, music and book projects, and after giving us eleven extraordinary years, she’s decided to focus her attention full-time on those other creative endeavors.

When we first launched this incredible hour, no one could have predicted the lightning (or rather, wine) in a bottle that is Hoda & Kathie Lee. Whether in studio or on one of their many road trips, they have delighted our audience with their distinct brand of fun, friendship and adventure. During that time, Kathie Lee has cemented her status as one of the most enduring and endearing talents in morning television. In short – she is a legend.

Jimmy Fallon summed it up best when he channelled Kenny Rogers on the tenth anniversary show earlier this year: Through the years, Kathie Lee has never let us down, she’s turned our lives around and she’s brought some of the sweetest days we’ve found…

As Kathie Lee told me today: “In 2008, I joined the TODAY Show family intending to spend one year. But something unexpected happened along the way: I fell in love with a beautiful, talented, extraordinary Egyptian goddess named Hoda, and an amazing group of individuals who work tirelessly and joyfully at their jobs, many of them starting at midnight, creating an unprecedented four hours of live television. I stayed year after year making a million memories with people I will never forget. I leave TODAY with a grateful heart but I’m truly excited for this new creative season in my life. Many thanks to all the wonderful people who made the years fly by.”

Kathie Lee is generously staying with us through the show’s next anniversary, April 7, 2019. We will have much more to share before then about our plans for that hour, which will, of course, continue to include Hoda.

Please join me in congratulating Kathie Lee on a dazzling run at TODAY. We look forward to celebrating her in the months to come.

Ellen Pompeo hasn’t spoken to Patrick Dempsey since he left ‘Grey’s Anatomy’

During her guest appearance on Jada Pinkett Smith’s Red Table Talk Facebook Watch series, the 49-year-old actress revealed that she hasn’t spoken to her former onscreen lover, Patrick Dempsey, since his “Grey’s Anatomy” exit in 2015.

“We haven’t spoken since he’s left the show,” said Pompeo, who portrays Dr. Meredith Grey on the popular ABC series. “I have no hard feelings toward him. He’s a wonderful actor, and we made the best TV you can make together.”

“That’s a talented man right there. He did 11 amazing years,” she continued. “Typically, when people leave the show, they need to sort of find themselves, who they are without the show, because the show takes up so much of your life. You need that time to figure out who you are without the show, so, we have not spoken, but I will always have a place in my heart for Patrick.”

Woman Marries 300-Year-Old Pirate Ghost, Then Confirms They’ve Split Up

0

Amanda Teague found love with the ghost of a Haitian pirate called Jack.

At the beginning of the year, the Irish Mirror reported that Teague became the first person in Ireland to get married to a dead person, choosing to share her life with the spirit of a pirate from the 1700 who was executed for thieving on the high seas.

“He wanted to explore all the cultures of the world, he wanted to travel the seven seas. Obviously he needed money to do that, so yes, he was a petty thief, and he did commit some crimes. But he wasn’t the typical pirate shall we say,” she said of the ghost.

Teague and her pirate ghost were legally married by a shaman on the Irish coast, but now, she claims to be seeking a divorce.

“So I feel it’s time to let everyone know that my marriage is over. I will explain all in due course but for now all I want to say is be VERY careful when dabbling in spirituality, it’s not something to mess with…” she explained on social media.

Teague currently lives in Belfast and claims that she’s not a medium, just someone who is sensitive to spirit energies. For a time she worked as a Jack Sparrow impersonator, spending over 6,000 pounds in order to change her name and looks so she could resemble Johnny Depp in costume, including the dreads, the golden teeth and the tattoos.

She met her ghost back in 2014, where she explained that the spirit appeared beside her when she lay in bed, and that he looked very much like Jack Sparrow. “He is dark-skinned and has jet-black hair, so he tells me.”

She also explained that, due to her views and thoughts regarding casual sex, they had to get married and have a commitment to each other. “I wanted the big traditional wedding with the white dress. It was very important to me,” she said of their engagement.

Netflix Just Broke A New Streaming Record

It’s not surprising to know that Netflix is one of the world’s leading streaming services. TechCrunch reports that this November the company broke its own record on mobile users, pulling an estimated $86.8 million in worldwide consumer spending across Android and iOS apps. In comparison, last November Netflix generated $49 million, showing a 77 percent increase in just one year.

Netflix’s previous record was held at $84.7 million, which they established on July 2018. Even though there are no clear explanations as to why Netflix is suddenly experiencing such a boost, experts believe that their increased viewership is due to Netflix providing more original content that appeals to international audiences.

An analysis conducted by Sensor Tower reports that viewership in foreign countries like Germany, Brazil, and South Korea has grown dramatically over the past year, by 90, 94, and 107 percent respectively. Although U.S. viewers still make up most of Netflix’s audience, accounting for 57 percent of the company’s revenue, the company’s share is declining and will continue to do so as long as they keep expanding.

Other reasons as to why Netflix is pulling more money are also due to a current shift towards streaming services and a disregard for cable networks and TV providers.

Netflix is planning on experimenting with different subscription plans and on developing a cheaper model that only runs on mobile. This new plan would be much more affordable and marketable in countries located around Asia, where there are much cheaper alternatives.

“We are testing to understand consumer interest in a mobile-only plan in some countries. Generally, we try out lots of new ideas at any given time, and they can vary in how long they last and who sees them. We may not ever roll out the features or elements included in a test,” Netflix told Quartz.
