Government Promised Equity Help, Doesn’t Deliver, No One Surprised

The marijuana industry has been transforming in the last couple of years. Social equity has become a mission to provide access to growth, development and ultimately wealth to communities that have been must harmed by the war on drugs.  New York upended their whole system in an effort to provide a pathway, ending in a fiasco with over 1,600 unlicensed dispensaries operating in NYC alone.  Now Massachusetts is the latest to have green egg on their face.  The state government promised equity help, doesn’t deliver and no one is surprised.

Last August, Massachusetts legislature passed a bill which last created a new fund that promised millions of dollars to equity-owned cannabis businesses. At the time, Republican Gov. Charlie Baker signed  the legislation into law which seeks to promote greater diversity among those participating in the state’s licensed cannabis industry.

The state grants two license that are given to to entrepreneurs who come from marginalized groups or who were harmed by the war on drugs. The fund was due to receive 15% of the revenue collected from the sale of cannabis in the state and give it to social equity and economic empowerment licensed businesses. Last year both adult-use and medical marijuana together hit $1.76 billion in the state, their best year over. This is according to data from the state regulatory body Cannabis Control Commission.

The fund was established, and the Cannabis Control Commssion established the Cannabis Social Equity Trust Fund.  It was duly charged with oversight of the income and the grants. There was some grumbling regarding the board, but it looked as if things were moving forward.

As it approaches a one year birthday, a group of businesses have petitioned the state Cannabis Control Commission asking regulators to disburse money from a social equity trust fund to existing social-equity-licensed businesses rather than to encourage new entrants to the marketplace.

Turns out in the all the excitement of saying they are doing good, they neglected to put the system in place to capture and accumulate the money. One year later, the fund has zero dollars much to the shock of the industry. But not a surprise to the people it is supposed to help.

A potential interim fix by the Office for Administration and Finance is in the works, which could make $2 million-$4 million available for social equity companies within a few months.  But previous revenue is lost and licensed who had thought they would have help will have to develop alternative plans to maintain and grow their businesses.

Tips To Manage Your High

For the canna newbie, you can sometimes overdose. In the wrong setting, it can be an issue…here are some tips

People are drinking less and consuming marijuana more. Like alcohol, sometimes you over indulge or you’re just not used to a Long Island Ice Tea and things hit you harder than you expect.  The same thing can be done with marijuana, experience or not, sometimes you go a bit farther you than you know, so here are some tips to manage your high.

Lemonade

Probably the most easy if you are near or store or at a party, is lemonade. People who regularly use cannabis know having a drink nearby is a good idea for multiple reasons. Lemonade is particularly useful because citrus can be effective in helping offset the effects of THC due to the presence of the limonene terpenes that promote alertness upon consumption.

The best way to ingest the terpenes necessary to offset the effects of THC is to consume lemon slices or lemon peels. Having lemon slices also help your breathe. This may not be the most subtle way to go about managing your high, but no one will comment on you a chill beverage. Lemonade also provides people with the opportunity to quench the cottonmouth that comes with marijuana consumption.

Though it may seem unlikely, lemonade could be the best aid in helping to manage a seemingly uncontrollable high.

Ibuprofen

Another one that may seem unusual is something that most people likely have stowed away in their medicine cabinet. Ibuprofen, while effective at treating head and body aches, has also shown to be effective in helping people manage their high after overindulging on THC.

A 2013 study published in the journal Cell found a safe dosage of ibuprofen was instrumental in helping some patients offset the effects from THC.  Having a few ibuprofen on hand could be crucial in helping people overcome over serving.

Ibuprofen can be taken inconspicuously in public or in private. Either way, remembering the effects that they can have in offsetting an inconvenient high could be a lifesaver this holiday season.

CBD

Whether it’s in the form of a vape pen or gummies, CBD could be the best resource in helping people deal with a high that they can’t shake. Scientific research shows evidence that the cannabinoid has properties that negate the effects of THC. Perhaps having a CBD pen, oil or gummies could be instrumental in overcoming an overbearing high.

Taking that into consideration, people considering using CBD vape pens to overcome their high should be slightly more mindful of their setting since vaping isn’t universally accepted  and may raises questions or suspicions.

Everyone has a bit too much at times, at worst you can go to sleep and later you can have some great stories. Be prepared if you are heading into a gathering where you need to stay focused, watch out and hopefully you can chill out and have fun.

Hitting the high seas? Marijuana on a cruise!

Cruises have rebounded from Covid in a HUGE way with some cruises sold out for upcoming years. Also popular are smaller, charters with 15-30 friends. This all inclusive bounty of food and fun has a great appeal.  And now they have alcohol packages that make imbibing easier and more cost efficient. But what do if you want marijuana on a cruise?

The cruise industry is expected to have over 31 million people board their ships this year.  This is larger than the 2019 numbers showing people are craving to board a boat and let loose.  The demand is so great, a new ship the Icon of the Seas, can carry 5,600 passagers and has built the largest waterpark on water.

All you can eat buffets, relaxing in the sun, music, multiple opportunities to chill, it would seem to be the perfect place to kick back and consume some marijuana.  But you need to be mindful of the rules.

white and black ship on sea during daytime

Marijuana products are simply illegal by federal law, so they’re banned across the entire fleets of pretty much every cruise line and river cruise company. Included in the prohibition are delta-8 and cannabinoid hemp products.  It also includes CBD and medical marijuana.

What if you bring them onboard?

Norwegian Cruise Line says in their policies that “items will be confiscated and not transported aboard. When an item is determined to be illegal the appropriate authorities will be informed.”

Carnival has a similar notice on its website. It says that the cruise line “reserves the right to confiscate any item” and that “items will be removed and disposed of and no compensation will be provided.”

Some ports of call have legal weed, like Seattle and Canada, so there is another opportunity for you to relax or restock.

RELATED: 3 Key Tools To Help Manage Your High

Knowing the rules, you can figure out your game plan. Many seniors use medical marijuana for pain and inflammation, in general, people use it for anxiety. And, some just use it for fun. If you can drink on board, perhaps you can have a gummy?

If you want to take it, remember the two giveaways.  Don’t use anything that produces a smell. It is a dead giveaway and very easy to trace back to you.  And you don’t want a staff member to have to confront you in front of your fellow passengers.  The second is don’t be overly high. While being a bit tight on alcohol is legal, but messy, onboard.  Being fully stoned is not.

Consider how you are going to consume.  Tintures, oils and edibles are the easiest for boarding and produce the least smell. They are also better in managing your high.

Don’t use a cruise as your first time experiment. You may not have the reaction you want and it is tough to respond in an unknown and unfamiliar environment.

If you decide to have marijuana on a cruise, be discreet, be chill and have a great time.  Bon voyage!

Does Legalizing Marijuana Reduce Drunk Driving?

DUIs are well known, seen in TV shows, newspapers and movies…we now the accidents and reason to avoid it.  But a night out and one too many beers/cocktails/wine and things can take a rough turn. Recreational cannabis legal in 23 and medical in 40 states, so does legalizing medical marijuana reduce drunk driving?

Data finds a link between states with medical marijuana programs and lower risk of dangerous driving and car accidents. The data belongs to a study in Health Economics that analyzed insurance information and trends from auto companies from 2014 to 2019.

RELATED: Regular Cannabis Users Better Drivers Than Casual Consumers, New Study Explains Why

The study found auto insurance premiums decreased in states with medical marijuana programs due to cars being involved in fewer accidents on the road.

The date showed premiums dropped by approximately $22 dollars a year after states enabled their medical marijuana programs. Researchers theorize that this is due to fewer car accidents and drunk driving in these states, with drivers substituting alcohol for cannabis.

“Medical cannabis legalization has reduced auto insurance premiums by $1.5 billion in all states that have currently legalized, with the potential to reduce premiums by an additional $900 million if the remaining states were to legalize,” reads the study.

The results are not wholly understood, but the link between legal cannabis and a reduction in drunk driving matters. While driving while high is potentially dangerous and should be avoided and monitored, the fact that legal marijuana might curb drunk driving is important. Statistics claim that drunk driving account for 10,000 deaths a year, accounting for a little under 30% of traffic fatalities.

The odds of being involved in a motor vehicle crash when driving ‘stoned’ are approximately double those of sober driving, but significantly less than the 10 to 15 times increase when driving with a blood alcohol concentration of approximately 0.1,” shared Godfrey Pearlson, MD, medical director of the Olin Neuropsychiatry Research Center at the Institute of Living, part of the Hartford HealthCare Behavioral Health Network.

Your body reacts to alcohol and marijuana differently. Despite the fact that both substances alter people’s perceptions, when people use marijuana they tend to stay at home or go to house parties. Alcohol prompts the opposite behavior, encouraging people to drive to bars and clubs.

it seems legalizing marijuana does reduce drunk driving.  But driving stoned is not a smart idea. Marijuana affects areas of the brain that control your body’s movements, balance, coordination, memory, and judgment.

Data Clear THC Has A Positive Effect On PTSD

Veteran’s give there all and experience things rarely faced by average citizens. In Canada and America alone there are 17 millions with over a million suffering from Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).  Now data is clear THC, from marijuana, has a positive  effect on PTSD. The US Department of Veterans affairs are working to provide medical marijuana to veterans.

Research has consistently demonstrated that the human endocannabinoid system plays a significant role in PTSD. People with PTSD have greater availability of cannabinoid type 1 (CB1) receptors as compared to trauma-exposed or healthy controls (18,19). As a result, cannabis use by individuals with PTSD could produce short-term reductions of PTSD symptoms.

Researchers from Wayne State University in Michigan have been working to help.  They published data in the journal Neuropharmacology. The study found the combination of a specific type of therapy and moderate amounts of THC were particularly beneficial for people with PTSD.

They conducted a double-blind experiment on 51 participants. These subjects were randomly given 7.5 mg of THC or a placebo pill and were kept under supervision and timed. Participants were scanned on a MRI with researchers conducting regular check-ins on their mental state.

After consuming their pills, at the peak of THC’s effect, researchers provided participants with emotional regulation tasks, like showing participants triggering images and repeating this with the goal of having them reappraise them, and thus successfully regulating their emotions.

Results showed that only participants who’d consumed THC were able to reduce and manage their negative emotions. The compound also activated areas of their brains that are normally stunted in people with PTSD. “THC may prove to be a beneficial pharmacological adjunct to cognitive reappraisal therapy in the treatment of PTSD,” wrote the study’s authors.

This study isn’t the first to find a link between THC and PTSD, but it is the first to see THC’s impact during cognitive reappraisal tasks for individuals with PTSD, which is important. When patients are able to successfully reappraise their emotions they’re more likely to repeat this behavior in the future, reducing anxiety and negative responses. This suggests that THC could become an effective way of treating these patients and improving their symptoms.

Is Marijuana Use Linked With An Overactive Bladder?

0

Marijuana has gone mainstream and become part of people’s weekly life. Similar to alcohol, it is even moving into people’s routine.  We know how beer makes you want to visit the restroom, but what about cannabis.  It seems heavy use of marijuana might be linked with an overactive bladder.

Overactive bladder is defined as a condition where people have to urinate with more frequency. It includes behaviors like nocturia, urge incontinence, and more. It’s considered a chronic disease. At worse it is a major inconvenience and can cause disrupted sleep, but it can lead to other conditions. It affects up to 33 million adults, including as many as 30% of men and 40% of women. However, that number may be higher because many people may feel embarrassed and won’t get help.

A study published in the American Journal of Medicine examined whether marijuana has an impact on overactive bladders and found regular marijuana consumers are more likely to suffer from the condition than non-users.

Researchers collected data from 2005 and 2018 on regular and non-regular marijuana users aged 18 to 59, who answered a variety of questions about drug use and kidney conditions.

RELATED: Study: Regular Cannabis Use Not Linked To Anhedonia (What Is Anhedonia?)

Over 18,000 samples were gathered, with 24% of respondents identifying as regular marijuana users. These people were more likely to be male, single, smokers, thinner, and younger when compared to the other participants in the study. They also reported more urinary incontinence and frequent nocturia, which is the urge to wake up in the middle of the night to go use the bathroom.

While researchers don’t fully understand why marijuana affects bladders specifically, the study shows regular marijuana users were at higher risk of overactive bladder disorder and are especially at higher risk of nocturia.

“Our data do not support the evidence for the use of cannabinoids in the medical treatment of patients with overactive bladder, especially given the thorny health problems caused by marijuana,” concludes the study.

Before you becoming overly concerned about marijuana, there are multiple causes for an overactive bladder. They  include drinking too much fluid, urinary tract infections (UTIs), caffeinated drinks, alcohol, spicy foods, and other bladder irritants, and having certain health conditions, for example, bladder stones or diabetes. In addition, certain medications can lead to the same condition, so if they are issues, chat with your doctor.

What Is Hashish?

0

It has been around for thousands of years, but what is it?

Hashish has been referred to in stories from ancient times.  Exotic locales like Tangiers, Egypt, the far east…all with whiffs of smokey clouds and a relaxed air.  But what is hashish and is it still consumed today?

Hashish, also known as hash, is a concentrated form of cannabis that has been used for centuries for its psychoactive effects.

Cannabis has a long history of cultivation and use, dating back thousands of years. The use of cannabis for medicinal and recreational purposes can be traced back to ancient civilizations in Asia, including China and India. Hashish, specifically, originated in the Middle East and North Africa, where it was traditionally made by collecting the resinous material from cannabis plants.

The person to make hashish known in Europe was Napoleon Bonaparte. The famed French military and political leader. In 1798, Napoleon invaded Egypt with a scientific expedition team.  They conquered the country and looted treasure to bring back to Louvre he remade it to the trove of art known today.

They made another discovery of hashish which had great effect on European culture and literary thought. Prior to the French campaign in Egypt, hashish wasn’t well known in Europe and certainly wasn’t commonly used. The 40,000 French troops stationed in Egypt, however, quickly learned about it. Hashish was ubiquitous in Egypt Hashish was ubiquitous, bought and sold in cafés, markets, and smoking lounges. Lacking access to their customary French wines and liquors and encouraged by Napoleon to embrace Egyptian culture, many French troops took up hashish. When they returned to France and Europe with hashish, it was introduced to a new audience. The public loved it.

Despite efforts by authorities in Europe to paint hashish as an unstable and dangerous substance, many of the Romantic period’s most accomplished artists and writers were brought together because of cannabis. Dubbing themselves Le Club des Hachichins (Hashish-Eaters’ Club), luminaries such as Théophile Gautier, Charles Baudelaire, Gérard de Nerval, Victor Hugo, Honoré de Balzac, and Alexandre Dumas meet an extoll hashish. The Creative set helped normalized marijuana use and popularized the Romantic era’s bohemian creed: l’art pour l’art (art for art’s sake).  Some things never change.

Today, it is recognized as a form of cannabis containing concentrated amounts of THC, the psychoactive compound. It is often produced by collecting the resinous material from the cannabis plant and then drying and compressing it into various forms. A potent form, it is not suggested for the canna-newbie.

Smoking hashish can be done in several ways, but the pipe remains the most preferred method of all. Pipes have been around for hundreds of years and were used even by the ancient Egyptians. Another easy way is to take your “hash” and roll it into a joint.

Hashish a ancient and powerful cannabis, so be ready for the journey.

Billionaire Buffett’s Bet On Cannabis

The Powerball is at a $1 Billion – a fraction of Warren Buffett’s worth.  What’s his investment in the marijuana?

Everyone is watching the Powerball with the dream of becoming instantly wealthy. People who win a lottery find all sorts of door open to them.  From building a water park to paying off their family and friend’s mortgage, people have fun spreading their wealth.  But what about the real rich?  Especially the Omaha guru?  He has made a fortune in food, soda, mobile homes, and funeral homes. The pubic feeds on watching billionaire Buffett’s bets on industries, including cannabis.

While born to a connected and comfortable family, Buffett has a strong work ethic. As he began the journey to being worth $110+ billion, he sold products door to door, worked at a grocery store and delivered newspapers.

Buffett’s interest in the stock market and investing dates back to his school days spent in the customers’ lounge of a regional stock brokerage near his father’s own brokerage office.  Who would have guessed way back when, Buffett would have a stake in the marijuana industry? And, like usual, the billionaire Buffett’s bet on cannabis is doing very well thanks to increased consumer cannabis demand.

Buffett and his investment company Berkshire Hathaway don’t directly invest in cannabis.  Rather, like some pharmaceutical companies, the companies where he owns a part invests in the industry.

Crazy Comparisons Of Lotteries To The Marijuana Industry

People are starting to make pitstops to pick up their lottery tickets.  The “pot” is huge and people are willing to toss a few extra dollars to dream. Lines are long and the morning shows are asking “what would you do if you win”.  A hunt for the winner will follow and they will share they just want to do right by their friends and family.

Lotteries have a long history. Starting in ancient Rome and used in Renaissance Europe to raise money for churches and other government projects. They won acceptance in the US with the promise of helping with education funding. Marijuana use dates before lotteries as it was (and still is) used as medicine for things including pain and inflammation.

Sales of state lotteries in the United States reached approximately $107.92 billion 2021. A Powerball lottery set records, coming in at a whopping $1.6 billion. The industry is over 4 times the size of the marijuana market in 2021 where is was around $22 billion.  These two industries help you kick back, dream and chill.

Forty-five states have lotteries with Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada and Utah opting out.  For cannabis 23 states have recreation and 40 have recreational. Idaho, Nebraska, Indiana, Kansas and Tennessee so far say fully no to any legal marijuana. Interesting there is no crossover.

RELATED: Unlicensed Shops in NYC Are Doing Better Than The Naked Cowboy

Gallup polls have found that state lotteries are the most popular form of gambling in the U.S., with roughly half of respondents saying they purchased a lottery ticket in the past 12 months. it is affordable with prices as low as $1 or $2 per ticket.  About 66% of the population play the lottery at least once a year.  Almost 90% of the population believes marijuana should be legal and roughly 18% of the population use marijuana at least once a year.

Convenience store chain Circle K has been a leader in both cannabis and the lottery. They have been putting a structure in place where people are able to buy marijuana products along with cigarettes and snacks at gas stations. Now they announced they are partnering with Jackpocket, a third-party app that provides a secure way to order official state lottery tickets, for exclusive perks for lottery players.

RELATED: California or New York – Which Has The Biggest Marijuana Mess?

State Government are the big winners in both.  For lotteries, they take in about a third of each lottery jackpot.  In states where marijuana is fully legal, it has supposed alcohol tax revenue, despite selling fewer products.

While the money spent on lottery tickets give you the ability to perhaps dream of a different life (and for a very few – live the life), the purchase of legal marijuana allows you to chill or treat your medical issue every time.  Money well spent.
