5 Things Doctors Know About CBD

CBD is incredibly popular, but a lot of questions surrounding the compound remain unanswered. Here are some science supported facts.

Despite CBD’s lack of research and its relative newness, we’ve seen an increase in demand for the compound, with new infused products hitting retailers every day. We know cannabidiol is a good addition to skin and beauty products because of its medicinal properties, and that it produces relaxing results when consumed as a supplement. But where’s the science?

The fact that CBD is so new and mysterious has allowed for some misinformation to slip in, with many companies calling it a miracle drug that can fix anything and everything. This confusion also has led to hundreds of knock-off products that claim to contain CBD, while they don’t actually contain enough to produce an effect.

The Huffington Post spoke to experts regarding CBD, trying to separate fact from fiction. Here are some of the effects that have some scientific support.

CBD can reduce inflammation

CBD attaches itself indirectly to cannabinoid receptors in the body, which could lead to less inflammation. Dr. Rahul Klare says that the compound might work best as a compliment to another medication, helping people manage their symptoms and pain. “CBD won’t completely take the pain away like a morphine would, but it may decrease it to a point where it makes the pain more tolerable,” he explains.

It can help manage anxiety

Studies show that CBD can affect your emotional state, managing short term disorders like anxiety, panic disorder, social anxiety and more. A study from the University of Montana says that CBD attaches itself to a serotonin 1A receptor in the brain, producing these anxiety relieving results. Another interesting discovery is the fact that, with a little THC, CBD’s effects are even more pronounced.

It could help with gastrointestinal issues

A little known fact is that CBD has shown some promise in treating gastrointestinal issues, particularly the ones caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease. The Huffington Post explains: “Cannabinoid receptor antagonists (AKA parts of CBD that bind to those cannabinoid receptors in your body discussed earlier) decreased relaxation in the lower esophageal sphincter. When the lower esophageal sphincter relaxes too much, it can often lead to acid reflux.” TLDR: By decreasing relaxation of the sphincter, CBD can also limit acid reflux and similar symptoms.

CBD could have an adverse reaction to other medicines

Doctors explained that CBD in high doses could have a negative and maybe even dangerous reaction with conventional medicines, especially if the person taking them is older or consuming multiple medications. It’s important for you to be careful and to talk to your doctor if you’re considering pairing CBD with a prescribed medication.

It may also cause nausea

CBD has been related to nausea, especially when consumed in high doses. Making matters more complicated, CBD is also particularly hard to dose, with experts and authorities not setting a dosing standard. As always, if you’re consuming CBD or planning on doing it, start off slow and listen to your body.

This Week’s Music: Lindsay Lohan, Samantha Urbani And The Knocks

This week’s music includes the return of Lindsay Lohan and new singles from Samantha Urbani and The Knocks.

This Week’s Music is a weekly column that discusses the weeks’ best, worst, and most interesting songs. We try to select songs of different artists and genres to keep things interesting and to please a variety of music fans.

This week was an uneventful one for music, with lowkey releases from The Knocks and Samantha Urbani, and the somehow not covered at all musical comeback of Lindsay Lohan.

Pop

Lindsay Lohan – Xanax

Lindsay Lohan’s notorious music career isn’t as populated as you’d think. She released two albums in the early 2000’s, and sang some songs for her Disney films. Now, almost two decades later, Lohan returns to the music scene without the support of Disney or her rabid fanbase, resulting in a song that’s called “Xanax.” It features an EDM beat and Lohan’s ever youthful vocals but that’s about it for individualities. It’s a bad song, with stock beats and lyrics, but it’s an improvement over social media videos where she’s attempting to kidnap kids. Good for her.

Samantha Urbani – Made In Love

“Made In Love” is Samantha Urbani’s first single of the year, and despite a cheesy title and some lyrics that shouldn’t work, the song comes together surprisingly well. The song features different breezy and surreal sounds that blend well together, made better thanks to Urbani’s lovely vocals. There’s an undercurrent of sincerity in her writing that makes “Made In Love” into a stand out pop song.

Electronic

The Knocks – New York Luau (KC Lights Remix)

The Knocks, an electronic duo from New York, are known for their remixes of popular songs, but they also produce some really elaborate and fun singles. “New York Luau” is a rich song, filled with different instruments and rhythms, jumping around from one mood to the next. The KC Remix version is stripped down and less experimental, more centered on a house party mood.

Debunking 6 Popular Myths About Today’s Marijuana

We now have more information about marijuana than ever, but there are still a bunch of myths that influence the way in which we view the herb.

There are a lot of myths surrounding marijuana, ranging from crazy stuff to others that makes a little bit of sense. This confusion is understandable; it’s only recently that marijuana has earned some legal status across states, and that serious scientific studies are being conducted.

Although much of marijuana’s make up and effect remain mysterious, there’s lots of room to learn more. We scoured the web to find some of the most popular marijuana myths. Here are six of the most common.

Weed isn’t as strong as it used to be

According to Ryan Vandrey, a professor from John Hopkins University, THC in cannabis is way higher than it used to be. Since cannabis is now a business, there are expert botanists that breed plants that contain larger quantities of THC. So maybe people smoked more weed in the 70s, but that doesn’t make today’s marijuana any less potent.

All weed is the same

There are two major types of marijuana, Indica and Sativa, both of which produce different highs. In short, Sativas are psychoactive while Indicas are more relaxing. It’s a little more complicated than that, since most marijuana plants contain a mix of both, but this generally works as a rule of thumb.

Synthetic marijuana is safe

Synthetic marijuana is much stronger than regular marijuana and it can lead to some really awful side effects. Synthetic marijuana has chemicals added in in order to resemble the effect and look of natural marijuana. These chemicals are harmful for your body, with some of the most serious side effects include renal damage, psychosis, cardiovascular harm and changes in the brain.

You can overdose on marijuana

It’s extremely unlikely to die from a marijuana overdose, but if you smoke too much you can have a pretty awful time. These overdoses can last a couple of hours and include symptoms of anxiety, paranoia, dizziness, and loss of coordination.

You can cheat a urine test

While there are tons of products that claim to do this, it’s very, very unlikely and practically impossible to cheat a urine test if there’s marijuana in your system. THC can be detected in urine for up to 10 days after consumption, 30 days if you’re a chronic user. Most products that claim to cheat urine tests simply dilute your urine, which tests can pick up on, flagging your sample as invalid.

Holland has never legalized marijuana

Holland, one of the world’s most popular marijuana scenes, has never actually legalized marijuana. In 1978, the government decided not to enforce bans in coffee shops and locales where people get together and smoke/sell small amounts of marijuana. Still, growing, distributing and importing marijuana within the country remains illegal.

5 Tips To Prepare Your Finances For The Holiday Season

0

The holiday season is one of the most expensive times for traveling and shopping. Here are some things you can do to save some money and have a good time.

The holidays are great time, filled with family reunions, food, alcohol, presents and trips. The one thing they all have in common? Money.

As exciting as the holiday season is, one of it’s main drawbacks is the stress that comes with stretching your money and ensuring that you have the right amounts to do everything you kind of have to do.

Here are five tips that can help you plan around the holiday season and ensure you’re not paying off debts come next Thanksgiving:

Plan ahead and start early

Now that October is beginning and everyone is decking out their best Halloween themed things, make sure you start accounting for your holiday trips and expenses. Spend your money wisely and think twice before impulse shopping. The earlier you start planning ahead, the easier everything will go, finding cheaper presents, flight tickets and more.

Book your flights as soon as possible

The first thing you should do is book your trip, allowing you to get the best possible price. If you’re using a site like Kayak or Momondo, be sure to visit the site regularly and pay close attention to their price estimates. Plane tickets around this time of the year tend to fluctuate on a day to day basis. If you see a good price, buy it. It’ll likely be gone within the hour.

Use technology to your advantage

Make a budget for the holidays or keep track of your spending with the help of a website like Mint. This will notify you when you’re spending too much money and don’t have the luxury to do so. Your budget should include travel expenses – plane ticket, gas money, car rental, hotels, Ubers, etc. You can also include your budget for presents and your plans for going out to dinners and drinks. Don’t be too strict because it’s the holidays and you want to have fun, but also, don’t be too lenient.

Make a shopping list

If you have a big family then it’s time you start putting together that shopping list, looking for presents that the person will like and that are also worth their price. The worse thing you can do is wait until the last minute and panic shop: this will result in a shitty and expensive gift.

Make a plan for your credit card debt

Although the worst thing you can do is get in debt because of the holidays, it happens, and that’s okay. If you’ve had debts all year, be sure to at least make the minimum credit card payments so that it doesn’t build up. Look for flight tickets and shops that allow you pay for things in different payments, that way you’ll have a bigger grip on your money and won’t allow your budget to get too out of control. It’s also okay to have some fun and to owe a little more money than usual. It is the holidays and you can cut yourself some slack.

The Majority Of Americans Support Decriminalizing All Drugs

A new poll demonstrates shifting views on how to treat drug offenses in the country. Instead of jail time, most Americans favor recategorizing drug offenses.

In news that would’ve seemed inconceivable a decade ago, a new poll from libertarian think tank The Cato Institute found that 55% of American favor drug offenses not resulting in jail time. Instead, the majority of Americans favor “recategorizing drug offenses from felonies to civil offenses.” This would result in drug possession violations to “be treated like minor traffic violations rather than crimes.”

The news falls in line with a new trend of enforcing drug laws across the country. Last year, a Gallup poll reported that two-thirds of all Americans support legalizing marijuana. It also coincides with major American cities where cannabis has been legalized, like Seattle and San Francisco, expunging past marijuana convictions.

RELATED: Marijuana Legalization Would Eliminate Drug Smuggling Better Than Trump’s Wall

Unsurprisingly, the support for decriminalizing all drugs was favored more by Democrats (69%) and Independents (54%) than Republicans (40%) in the Cato Institute’s polling. To reach these conclusions, the Cato Institute surveyed more than 1,700 Americans through phone calls. Respondents were then asked whether they “favor or oppose re-categorizing drug offenses from felonies to civil offenses, meaning they would be treated like minor traffic violations rather than crimes.”

The questions comes at a time when American political leaders have reconsidered the negative impact brought by the War on Drugs, particularly on disenfranchised communities of color. Many presidential candidates for the Democratic nomination have announced they’d legalize marijuana should they be elected. Sen. Kamala Harris and former Rep. Beto O’Rourke have displayed the most aggressive marijuana reform, with O’Rourke calling for drug war reparations.

In addition, a Canadian lawmaker recently proposed legislation that would repeal federal law that prohibits the possession of illicit substances. Though Liberal MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith’s bill has a low chance of passing, it would effectively decriminalize all drugs in the country. Erskine-Smith believes drug offenses and addiction as a public health issue, not as a crime.

Why Princes Harry And William Drive Themselves To Parties

Don’t members of the royal family have chauffeurs, you ask? Yes, yes they do. But here’s why that’s not always wanted or even necessary.

If you’ve been following the royals for awhile, especially since Harry and Meghan got hitched, you’ve probably seen both Prince William and his brother papped driving themselves to fancy royal soirees. If you think that seems weird, you’re not alone. The question has been asked enough times that the Daily Mail has done some digging and uncovered a few reasons why the princes get behind the wheel when they could very easily just use a driver. (Sometimes, they get really crazy and open their own car doors!)

Last November, during Prince Charles’ 70th birthday party, many of the royal guests drove themselves to the shindig at Buckingham Palace, including the Dukes of Cambridge and Sussex. And in 2017, Sophie, Countess of Wessex, was one of many members of the royal family photographed driving to the Queen’s Christmas lunch at Buckingham Palace with her daughter Lady Louise.

Etiquette expert William Hanson tells the Daily Mail that the decision to drive has everything to do with private events.

“Modern royalty tend to drive themselves to private parties and engagements because it is exactly that — a private event.”

He said William and Harry’s decision to drive to their father’s birthday party was, according to the Daily Mail, “a subtle but significant way of putting aside their titles for one night and being two loving sons attending their father’s milestone birthday celebrations.”

They are not attending specifically because of the titles and roles they play but because of their personal connection to the host.

He says in the case of their father’s party, they likely chose “to arrive and leave with less fanfare than during their official ‘work’ engagements.”

The brothers, William and Harry, were famously photographed driving their new brides off to their respective wedding receptions once the official ceremony was over. There’s something very romantic about a prince whisking his princess off into the sunset. Who would want to mess with that image?

Meme Of The Week: A Scared Tyra Banks Becomes The Most Relatable Meme

0

This week’s meme is a clip pulled from one of Project Runaway’s early episodes. Here are some of our favorite Twitter responses.

Internet memes tend to come from the most unexpected of sources, like this week’s meme, which is pulled from one of the early seasons of Project Runway. Why? No one knows, but it’s still a funny video.

In it, Tyra Banks walks inside a room and asks a handful of models to raise their hands if they’re scared, all with the most peaceful tone imaginable. All models, including Tyra herself, raise their hands in sympathy and the clip ends. For something so detailed and unique, it’s impressive how much the memes resonate, coming up with different twists and versions of a joke that are hilarious.

Hemp Is On Its Way To Becoming An American Cash Crop, But Farmers Have Challenges

0

While the idea of earning $40K per acre may be enough money to get just about anyone interested in industrial hemp production, should know that there are some tremendous risks involved.

Although the American farmer has struggled for years to survive amidst economic uncertainty, they were given some hope with the 2018 Farm Bill. That’s when, for the first time since 1937, industrial hemp production was legalized once again in the United States.

The plant, which had been outlawed nationwide because it too closely resembled its outlaw cousin marijuana, was unchained in hopes of giving the agriculture community the financial boost it needs to rise again. And, despite a slow start, that boost is well on its way. A new Hemp Cultivation study shows that farmers are well on their way to generating tens of thousands of dollars per acre by growing this plant.

Researchers from the Brightfield Group believe that more of the farming community is eventually going to jump into the hemp game. The reasons are not supernatural either; it’s all about the money. With the hemp-derived CBD market expected to touch $23 billion by 2023, the market research firm expects farmers to start knocking down $40,000 per acre through the cultivation of hemp.

RELATED: Industrial Hemp Is Now Legal: Can I Grow It At Home?

Considering that corn farmers typically only make $1,000 per acre, it is easy to see why some farmers would allot more land to hemp than those crops which were previously the basis of their plow-and-pick repertoire.

Presently, 34 states have legalized industrial hemp production since the passing of the Farm Bill. The study finds that 285,000 acres of hemp were planted this year, which is about 72 percent more than what was grown in 2018. Interestingly, 87 percent of the hemp crop was cultivated exclusively for CBD producers. And while the amount of hemp grown for CBD is expected to diminish in time, it is still likely to lead the game as of 2023.

While the idea of earning $40,000 per acre may be enough money to get just about anyone interested in industrial hemp production, farmers looking to this plant for economic salvation should know that there are some tremendous risks involved.

For starters, because of a shortage, it can be difficult to find the type of seed needed that guarantees the plant will produce high CBD yields. Some reports show that farmers are losing thousands of dollars on seed that didn’t sprout or flower as advertised.

RELATED: Marijuana Vs. Hemp: What’s The Difference?

Furthermore, growing hemp is labor-intensive, especially when it comes time to harvest. Traditional equipment doesn’t work. So, farmers have to invest tens of thousands of dollars in new machinery and retrofits to get the job done. There are also cross-pollination issues and, perhaps, more importantly, a lack of markets to take this stuff off their hands. Farmers are scrambling to learn how and where to sell hemp crops once they are pulled from the ground.

“It’s a high-risk crop — it’s hard to find markets,” Matt Cyrus, the president of the Deschutes County (Oregon) Farm Bureau, told the Philadelphia Inquirer. “It’s not like corn or wheat or other commodities, where you just go down to the local grain elevator.”

Even though it is well worth it now for many farmers to get in on the ground floor of hemp production, there is still a lot that can and probably will go wrong. It is for this reason that experts are urging farmers with more to lose to enter the hemp sector with a bit of caution. Because while the crop does come with the potential for high profits, getting there is a whole other story.

Everything You Need To Know About Moon Rock Weed

Also known as meteorites, moon rocks are potent cannabis buds “moon rock weed” that have been coated in concentrates and then rolled in kief, making for a powerfully strong session.

Upon hearing about a cannabis product called moon rocks, one can imagine some pretty alarming realities, but this is just another super potent specialty product that has been around for awhile in some states. We don’t have easy access across the land, so on a recent trip to the typically abundant markets of California, tracking down the elusive rocks was harder than anticipated.

Moon rocks are potent cannabis buds (moon rock weed) that have been coated in concentrates and then rolled in kief, making for a powerfully strong session. Though this may sound wild and new, it’s truly no different than an artisan pre-roll with the same three components. These nuggets are sometimes known as meteorites, and occasionally you’ll see single color kiefs giving them purple or golden glow.

RELATED: I Went To A Dab Bar For The First Time And This Is What Happened

What makes these delights so special is their appearance and high cannabinoid content. When you take a peek, the sparkle of crystalline kief and the flower’s own trichrome carpet meld together. You can spot tiny glimmers of oil occasionally visible in between the buds. They look like Frankenweed, but in the best way — even experienced smokers find them exciting.

Where an eighth of 25.7 percent cannabis can contain 850mg of THC, tossing roughly 1000 mg of concentrates right on top of them takes it to the next universe. This means you can get to some strength stratospheres and should be careful when partaking of these babies. Try using a tabletop vape for full flavor and minimal harshness, or going for the gusto by rolling up a gram or so; both ways will be surprisingly potent compared to even high THC flower.

So, how to smoke a moon rock? Rolling with the moon rock is also a slick way to make your own “cannagar” (cannabis cigar) if you procure some hemp wraps; mondo blunts like this are often fully lined with oils and rich kiefy flower for a premium taste and a whole lot of doses. You could probably bust down 20 other eager smokers with two grams or so.

When it came time to try for myself, I twisted up one gram of nuggets made out of Pineapple OG coated in Do-si-dos concentrate and Super Sour Diesel kief that a friend had made for a really interesting cultivar blending experience. It was tastier than I could have imagined, thanks to the piney Do-si-dos that made everything else meld together in a way East Coasters don’t often come across. Flavor seems to be the chief benefit of these party pleasers, and the various components give you as much terpene taste as a dab if you have super clean product.

RELATED: What Is Kief And How Can Marijuana Patients Use It?

That beautiful joint kept me baked for seemingly forever, perfect for a long haul flight or a sesh with friends. As a seasoned smoker, the potency was quite surprising, and I wouldn’t recommend anyone who is new to cannabis reach for something quite so intense until they’ve been at it for a few years or are trying to quash serious pain.

The challenge with moon rocks these days is finding them, since California updated its cannabis regs, again. Lab testing requirements have put many smaller operations who used to make moon rocks out of business, and specialty products of this nature are often made by smaller brands, at least for the time being. You can consult the internet to make your own as some Californians do, which works great if you’ve been saving your kief.

It’s easier to source these items in a legal state, like Washington, where the regulations have been in a much longer stasis, allowing specialty products like moon rocks, cannagars, and herbal artisan joints to flourish and spread in popularity like they’re going to do no matter who makes the profits.
