4 Signs You Need To Send Back That Bottle Of Wine

0

A bottle of wine is a surprisingly fragile thing, and I’m not just talking about what happens when you leave it too close to the edge of the table. Despite the best efforts of winemakers and retailers, unfortunately faults and flaws are more common than you’d think. Sometimes that wine you didn’t like wasn’t your thing, but sometimes there’s something wrong with that bottle (or the whole batch). So what can go wrong, and how can you know? The short answer is, you have to use your senses, and talk with the person who’s selling you the wine. Let’s talk about a few of them.

The Wine Smells Like Your Basement

If your wine smells like moldy cardboard or is lacking in any pleasing aromas at all, the chances are that Trichloroanisole (commonly called TCA) is to blame. It’s typically transmitted to the wine via a tainted cork (which is why those wines are often termed “corked”), but TCA can even be present in screw-capped wines, so don’t just assume that if there’s no cork you’re safe.

The Wine Smells Like Vinegar

You’ve probably left a bottle of wine open a bit longer than you should have; if so, you’ve learned that when exposed to oxygen, wine inevitably becomes vinegar. Well, either too much exposure to oxygen during winemaking, or a poorly-closed bottle can do the same thing before you ever open it.

RELATED: 4 Serious Things To Consider When Buying Canned Wine

There are a few classic styles of wine that might have faint hints of vinegar; it’s fairly common in Italian red wines for one, so if this turns you off (or on), talk to your server or sommelier beforehand.

The Wine Smells Like Nail Polish Remover

A whole host of different yeasts can contribute to a wine’s fermentation. Some of them can produce compounds that don’t exactly smell like wine, like ethyl acetate. As with acetic acid above, individual preferences and tolerances can vary, but if you dislike this odor you should be a bit wary of wines that are fermented with wild yeasts, like natural wines. In less experienced hands, fermentations can quickly get out of control and produce some of these off odors.

The Wine Looks Discolored Or Faded

The color pigment in red wines decays over time, so if you’re ordering older bottles (10+ years old), don’t expect a vivid purple. But if you’re buying a relatively new wine, faded or rusty colors might be another sign of oxidation. There are a few varietals (Pinot Noir, Nebbiolo, Grenache) that are naturally low in pigment, but if you’re drinking Syrah or Cabernet Sauvignon, color can be key. The best way to examine color is to hold the bottle at a 45-degree angle away from you and look at both the center of the glass, and how the color changes as you move to the edge of the wine. A significant rim variation in a young red wine is rarely acceptable.

Most of all, don’t be afraid to ask your server and sommelier their opinion. Yes, it can be scary, but restaurants can almost always get a refund from the distributor for a flawed bottle, and in any case they’ll undoubtedly want to make sure that you get the best possible wine in your glass.

Prince Harry Was ‘Worried’ About Not Finding A Partner; Jennifer Garner Works ‘Very Hard’ Not To Read Comments About Herself

Jennifer Garner works ‘very hard’ not to read comments or articles about herself

“They tell me I’m prettier in person than I am on screen,” the actress, 47, tells PEOPLE good-naturedly in this week’s cover story. “You might as well see it for the compliment that they mean it to be. That happens, if I’m out and about, every day at some point. I don’t know what it is, but that is by far what I hear the most.”

Garner insists she feels “really lucky” because the fans she typically meets “tend to feel like I’m the girl they grew up next to or an old friend, and they want to continue a conversation that I didn’t know we were having,” she says, laughing.

As for the Internet, the actress never pays attention to anything about herself in the media. “Zero. Not only do I not read comments, I work very hard to not see the pictures, to not read articles or to know what’s out there at all,” she says. “And it’s not that I don’t care, it’s that I care too much. Instagram is a different story because I don’t get a lot of people being mean.”

“I want to just keep doing what I’m doing,” Garner says.

Prince Harry was ‘worried’ about not finding a partner

Britain’s Prince Harry was deeply concerned about what the future held for him before American actress Meghan Markle came along.

After a whirlwind romance, the couple tied the knot in a televised ceremony in May 2018. Markle, 37, and Harry, 34, are expecting their first child sometime this spring.

“Harry, at one point, was genuinely worried that he was going to be left on the shelf,” royal expert Katie Nicholl told Fox News.

“His brother [Prince William] was happily married with children,” she explained. “Many of his friends, who up until that point had been eternal bachelors, were getting engaged, getting married. I think Harry genuinely worried about that, and one of the reasons he worried about that was because he wanted to find his life partner, and he wanted to be a dad. Harry wanted children for a very long time.”

“I was told by one of their friends that Harry would travel to Toronto in those early weeks of their courtship with just one protection officer, in a baseball cap, dressed down, looking absolutely ordinary, not always flying in first-class,” said Nicholl. “He deliberately entered out those journeys to Meghan being as normal as possible, and then some days he’d go to her house and come out with friends. They were seen in Meghan’s neighborhood all before it was public knowledge that they were a couple.”

“Everything moved quickly,” said Nicholl in a previous interview back in 2018, before the wedding. “According to sources I spoke to, they’ve both settled at Nottingham Cottage. She had her clothes and many of her belongings shipped over [from Toronto]…. They’ve managed to do that all very quietly and very below the radar.”

In October of last year, Markle and Harry revealed to the world they were expecting — an announcement Nicholl wasn’t shocked by.

Young People Experience Arthritis Too And Cannabis Can Help

Arthritis is the umbrella term for literally hundreds of joint-related disorders, pretty much all of them painful, including rheumatoid arthritis and the most common form, osteoarthritis. Though often associated with aging, arthritis doesn’t discriminate. Approximately 54 million Americans have been diagnosed with arthritis and 7 percent of those tens of millions are 18-44 year olds.

There are many ways to treat the discomfort that comes with arthritis—from creams to pills to joint wraps—but ofttimes the best medicine is all-natural. In many arthritic cases the very best medicine is actually cannabis, which also comes in a variety of forms, such as capsules, tinctures and salves.

RELATED: There’s No Known Cure For Arthritis, But Marijuana Works Wonders

So how best can arthritic pain be relieved with marijuana? It depends on the situation and how active of a lifestyle you lead. For a 21-year-old athlete experiencing arthritic symptoms, salves used in conjunction with what the doctor ordered may just do the trick without any of the side effects of cannabis, like getting high. But truly, whenever possible, the best answer is a combination of cannabis remedies.

Creams and salves are obvious choices, as you can rub in the soothing lotion, which is often combined with other medicinal herbs, right where it hurts. Not all lotions and potions are created equal, though. If you’re in a legal or medical state, use a cream with activated THC along with other cannabinoids and plant components (they won’t alter mindsets if that’s a concern). If you don’t live in a legalized state, a hemp/CBD cream will also help, just look for the words “full-spectrum” or for other cannabinoids to be named.

All told, a mixture of methods will help alleviate the pain in more ways, thus providing more relief. Adding an oral tincture to the rub remedy helps to loosen up stiff joints throughout the body. As arthritis is often caused by inflamed tissue between the joints, the anti-inflammatory aspect of cannabis really helps mitigate tender and sore areas by bringing down swelling.

Luckily, for states that haven’t gone all the way green yet, non-psychoactive CBD concoctions are also known to be anti-inflammatory. All cannabinoids are utilized by the body’s own endocannabinoid system, where they fit in like puzzle pieces. The system runs throughout the body and brain, thus relieving pain pretty much wherever when ingested, smoked or vaped. Layering topicals, tinctures and toking is a surefire way to feel better all around, and all aforementioned methods kick in almost immediately, so they’re easy to gauge if indeed psychoactive.

RELATED: Study: Medical Marijuana Has Serious Anti-Arthritic Capabilities

If the arthritis calls for the big dogs, it’s time to bring in capsules made of full spectrum hemp oil, high-THC cannabis oil or an activated edible. If taking either of the latter two, wait at least an hour after the initial dose before taking more to see where your pain level and headspace land. Unlike vaping, smoking, rubbing lotions or dropping tinctures, edibles and capsules take awhile to kick in, but then they really go to work, offering a heavy body high and maximum relief.

No matter what age arthritis hits, cannabis can help put stiff joints in motion, relieve swollen tissue and make for a higher quality of life. Movement is key whether 44 and under, in the senior bracket or somewhere in between. Add some flexibility and relief to living with arthritis by using the cannabinoids available to you and that work best with your lifestyle.

Women Are Treating Their Vaginal Infections With Garlic

Here’s a headline we bet you never thought you’d read.

Jennifer Gunter, a gynecologist who also writes recurring pieces for the New York Times, tweeted that inserting garlic cloves into your vaginas is a bad idea. Because, sadly, this is a thing that must be said.

RELATED: 10 Bad Habits To Avoid If You Want A Healthy Vagina

The practice of introducing garlic inside vaginas stems from the knowledge that the plant has allicin, a property that’s demonstrated some anti-fungal capabilities when tested in labs. Dr. Gunter explains that even if this chemical had been tested on humans – it hasn’t – people who insert full garlic cloves inside their vaginas aren’t reaping the benefits of allicin. These only appear when the garlic clove is cut or crushed. On a thread of tweets she explains that cloves are in contact with dirt which might introduce even more bacteria to the vagina, an environment that’s notoriously delicate.

Vaginas are mysterious creatures, prompting tons of hysteria and ignorance. That doesn’t mean that women should do crazy things to them, like inserting yogurt, lemon juice or oregano to improve smell and get rid of bad things. Yes, people actually have done this.

As a rule of thumb, steer clear from online vaginal remedies, no matter how many reads or views they have. People make up a lot of crap. If something feels off or wrong with your vagina, your best bet is to visit your doctor.

There’s Mounting Evidence Meghan Markle Has Already Given Birth

If all the buzz surrounding Meghan Markle is true, there’s a strong likelihood she has already given birth to baby Sussex.

The noise surrounding this rumor gained volume on Sunday when Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, was reported to have arrived in England. Now, if one were to surmise that a mom would arrive to be by her daughter’s side before she gave birth, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that Meghan could have given birth sometime between her mom’s arrival and today.

RELATED: Prince Harry Is In Charge Of This Important Task After Meghan Gives Birth

Also, on April 15, Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, announced they’ll be visiting Germany May 7 for a three day tour. And since it’s assumed they’re both expected to be nearby when the royal baby is born, it’s probably also safe to assume Meghan is expected to give birth before the trip begins. So if she’s already given birth, all of this information adds up.

Couple this with the facts we already know: Meghan and Harry don’t plan to announce their baby’s arrival until days after it’s born, and Meghan’s due date has been announced several times as late April/early May.

SheKnows speculates Meghan could have gone into early labor:

“Meghan could have been experiencing early signs of labor or possibly have been informed by her doctor that baby Sussex’s arrival was imminent. When you’re that close to the end of your pregnancy, doctor’s appointments typically take place weekly — and given that she’s a royal, perhaps even more frequently. Suffice it to say, Meghan and Harry probably had a pretty good beat on when their baby might make its big debut.”

Meghan also missed Easter service Sunday, which was also the Queen’s birthday. According to the Daily Mail‘s royal correspondent Rebecca English, it wasn’t exactly a surprise.

Even if Meghan has not yet given birth, it’s likely we can expect to hear about a royal arrival sooner than later.

Is This Why Adele Split From Her Husband?; Britney Spears Comments On Rumors She’s Being Held Captive

Did Adele split from Simon Konecki because he couldn’t handle her fame?

A source is telling E! News the two decided to go their separate ways because “they just grew apart.”

“They had a lot in common early on, but eventually they just grew apart,” the insider shares. “She became a bigger and bigger star, and he was okay [with] being in the background, but as she got bigger and had massive tours and intense schedules, they just grew apart.”

The source reveals they plan to “keep this amicable.”

Britney Spears comments on rumors, death threats

Via Fox News:

Britney Spears responded to rumors she’s being held against her will at a wellness center and said her family is receiving death threats in a video posted to Instagram Tuesday evening.

Fans began the #FreeBritney based on unfounded rumors that the 37-year-old pop star was being held against her will at a mental health institution by her father, Jamie Spears.

The 66-year-old gained sole conservatorship of his daughter’s estate in March after the singer’s attorney, Andrew Wallet, suddenly resigned.

Wallet had controlled Spears’ finances since her public meltdown in 2008. The artist checked herself into a wellness facility for mental health treatment earlier this month to help her cope with her father’s declining health, Fox News previously reported.

“There’s rumors, death threats to my family and my team, and just so many things crazy things being said,” Spears wrote Tuesday without clarifying whether she was kept at the mental health institution against her will or if she voluntarily committed to treatment. “My situation is unique, but I promise I’m doing what’s best at this moment,” she added.

Adding fuel to the fire, Britney’s mother, Lynne Spears, 63, liked several comments on her own Instagram post last week that supported rumors of her daughter being held captive. “Give Britney back her freedom, her voice, her life! Love you guys #freeBritney,” read one post the matriarch liked.

The “Toxic” singer concluded Tuesday’s post by assuring fans that she’s strong and stands up for what she wants. “Your love and dedication is amazing, but what I need right now is a little bit of privacy to deal with all the hard things that life is throwing my way,” Spears said. The songstress announced in January that she was taking an indefinite hiatus on her “Britney: Domination” show in Las Vegas to be by her father’s side as he battles a serious colon condition.

Survey: Nearly Half Of Us Would Rather Have A Clean House Than Sex

A clean house or a romp in the sack. Which would you prefer? If you’re like the majority of those who participated in a new study, you’d rather have a shiny home.

A recent survey found that more than 44% of people would choose to have a clean house over having sex. In fact, these people would prefer to live with their parents over the prospect of living in a messy home. If you think about it, this thinking makes some sense since cleanliness is a trait that affects many aspects of a person’s appearance and mentality.

The survey, conducted by Decluttr, aimed to find out how the state of a person’s home affects their sex life; it turns out, it affects it a lot. Results show that 50% of participants were more likely to have sex with their partners if they had completed their household chores. Sixty percent considered a tidy bedroom to be enough of an incentive for sex.

Cleanliness might not be at the top of our minds when we first meet someone and are considering their attractiveness, but it’s a trait that can quickly become a deal breaker for many. “When it comes to dating, Americans are hesitant to continue a relationship with someone whose household isn’t organized with 40% of respondents reporting that they’re likely to end a relationship with someone who has a cluttered and/or dirty home,” explains Decluttr via press release.

Although cleanliness is not something we naturally equate with sex appeal, there are few things more off-putting that a messy and dirty home. People who are content in messy homes and settings have been linked with traits like anxiety, depression and lack of focus and productivity. Setting aside a few minutes each day to pick things up and do your dishes can do a lot for your health, like boosting your cognitive functions and making you feel good about yourself.

Elizabeth Warren Doubles Down On Supporting Marijuana Legalization

This week Elizabeth Warren gained attention nationwide after announcing her higher education platform that would eliminate tuition for two-year and four-year public college, in addition to wiping away student loan debt for millions of Americans. But during a CNN town hall for presidential candidates, Warren also doubled down on her support for marijuana legalization.

A major impetus for her support? Racial disparities in current marijuana prohibition laws.

“The best evidence suggests that African Americans and whites use marijuana at about the same rates,” she said, according to Huffington Post.

“But African Americans are more likely to be arrested [than] whites are … if we talk about criminal justice reform, we need to start with the things we make illegal. One of the best places we could start with is the legalization of marijuana.”

While Warren delicned to publicly endorse her home state of Massachusetts’s ballot vote for recreational marijuana legalization in 2016, she responded to a Harvard student that suggested she opposed the state’s medical marijuana vote back in 2013. In fact, over the past few years, Warren has been one of the biggest public supporters of marijuana reform.

“I supported Massachusetts changing its laws on marijuana and I now support the legalization of marijuana [in the United States],” the senator replied.

RELATED: For The First Time, The Majority Of Republicans Favor Marijuana Legalization

Along with Sen. Cory Gardner (CO-R), Warren is one of the lead sponsors on the STATES Act, which would protect those in states with legalized marijuana from any federal prosecution or regulation. In addition, Warren co-sponsored other significant pieces of marijuana legislation like the SAFE Banking Act—which would protect banks and credit unions who want to work with cannabis companies from federal penalties—and the Marijuana Justice Act—which would remove cannabis from the list of controlled substances, making it legal on the federal level.

She currently has an A ranking from the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML).

Battle For California Cannabis Access Is Roadmap For States Considering Legalization

Over the last few years, California has gained a reputation of being a state where cannabis is completely legal and out in the open. In reality, cannabis isn’t nearly as “free” as people think it is in the Golden State, with many cities outright banning commercial cannabis activities. Right now, there is an ongoing battle between the state and local governments for access to cannabis, which should be the first place that states (and possibly even Congress) look when considering legalization.

For background, the operative state cannabis law in California—the Medicinal and Adult-Use Cannabis Recreation and Safety Act (“MAUCRSA”)—allows cities and counties to “adopt and enforce local ordinances to . . . completely prohibit the establishment or operation of one or more types of businesses licensed under this division within the local jurisdiction.” This provision (as well as some other related ones) have created a great deal of tension between state and local governments.

RELATED: FDA Issues More Guidance On CBD Products

The result of this comprehensive local control is that some local governments reject commercial cannabis activity altogether, or only allow very limited licensing and/or no retail sales or delivery. For example, only a small handful of the approximately 90 cities in Los Angeles County allow cannabis retail sales. To boot, many other localities throughout the Golden State prohibit deliveries within their borders. This continued prohibition even occurs in many cities whose voters approved of adult use cannabis sales back in 2016.

Local bans have created a good deal of regulatory and administrative chaos throughout the state, including the fact that the state is not netting the expected tax revenue it would otherwise receive if all local markets were open. One sticking point in particular is the fact that cities that don’t allow cannabis businesses also don’t even allow delivery to their citizens. According to the state though, that’s going to change. And fast.

The Bureau of Cannabis Control (“BCC”) recently created a regulation that allows deliveries by licensed cannabis retailers into any city or county in the state regardless of any local delivery ban. This was widely praised in the cannabis industry but was immediately attacked by localities.

RELATED: Does Legalizing Marijuana Help Or Harm Americans? Weighing The Statistical Evidence

To combat open deliveries, legislation was introduced (AB-1530) to specifically allow cities to forbid deliveries. AB-1530 recently failed passage on April 9, 2019 but may be reconsidered. A number of California cities also recently sued the BCCover this regulation. The litigation was only just filed, but we expect that the cities will move to enjoin the BCC’s implementation of this new open delivery rule—the result would be that deliveries could only occur in cities that allow them, which is the status quo. We don’t yet know how that litigation will unfold but will continue to follow it as it progresses.

Another recently introduced piece of legislation is AB-1356 would require local jurisdictions to allow certain local retail permitting if local voters voted in favor of the Control, Regulate and Tax Adult Use of Marijuana Act of 2016. In other words, AB-1356 would overrule local governments where local voters approved of the adult-use precursor to MAUCRSA.

One thing that’s obvious from these recent challenges and new bills is that there is room for compromise. Cities that don’t want to have brick-and-mortal cannabis operations, for example, could agree to allow regulated deliveries. Whether they agree or not, any total ban is likely to be ineffective and may only result in the further proliferation of the existing black market. Cannabis prohibition didn’t work previously; it’s not likely to work now on the local level either.

This battle is ultimately important for jurisdictions considering adopting cannabis laws. The point of legalization, regulation, and taxation is to outpace the black market and ensure safe and reliable access to cannabis with public health in mind—not to impose additional costs on the state and to shift disputes from the criminal courts to the civil ones. While local control is important and serves a legitimate purpose for protecting communities, lack of access to cannabis will really only serve to harm communities where the unregulated and unscrupulous black market rages on.
