Ways To Prepare Your Pet For A Flight

0

Flying with a pet is not only stressful and possibly dangerous for them, it’s also an exhausting endeavor for you and your travel companions. No matter how relaxed and easy-going your pet is, they’ll always feel some stress over the prospect of remaining inside their travel bag for a couple of hours, or the even more grueling scenario of having to spend the trip along with the luggage. Here are some ways to prepare your pet for a flight.

Learn your airline’s animal policy

Before you purchase your ticket, make sure to do the necessary research and learn about the different animal policies from each airline. While some only allow for small cats and dogs, others make room for birds, rabbits and other domesticated animals. You can check out this guide which has some in depth information about different airlines and their animal policies.

Make sure everything is okay with your pet

A few days ahead of your trip, make sure to visit the vet and check on your pet, ensuring that their vitals are fine, they’re up to date with their vaccinations, and that they’re fit for travel. Check with your airline about health certificates since some of them require ones that are time sensitive.

Purchase a comfortable pet carrier

https://giphy.com/gifs/forgot-P40vjSdXJny24

A good and comfortable pet carrier can make or break your trip, facilitating the whole transportation process and keeping your pet as comfortable as possible. These carriers should have appropriate ventilation, be easy to transport and they should also be roomy enough for your pet to move around comfortably. Another thing you should account for is the fact that each airline has their own pet carrier standards, making a complicated process even more troublesome.

Make sure they’re fed and hydrated

Have a talk with your vet about the appropriate feeding and drinking window for your pet. You don’t want them to be dehydrated and starving for the duration of the flight, but you also don’t want them to make a mess of themselves through the trip. Most vets advise that pets should have a relatively empty stomach before flights, that they’re moderately hydrated and that they’ve had enough exercise so they can sleep or relax through the duration of the trip.

Think twice before sedating them

https://giphy.com/gifs/morning-monday-hqnMFgrNktTBS

While many believe that sedation makes the whole flight process easier, the AMVA says that pets shouldn’t be sedated since this creates some problems in different areas. Pets who are sedated may not be able to brace themselves properly if there’s turbulence and might also have more trouble breathing. Speak with your vet and try to find the best solution for your pet.

Hopefully these ways to prepare your pet for a flight is helpful.

THC Gummies, Cookies And Chocolate Hit Differently

Weed brownies and candies likely won’t have the same effect as cannabis beverages or chocolate.

Edibles on dispensary shelves today are a far cry from the erratically-dosed, untested and unregulated munchies of a decade ago, whether you procured them as a registered medical patient or made your own. Nowadays everything is made in a permitted facility with proprietary technology and formulas, lab-tested and packaged with clear dosing instructions. But as many regular users might have noticed, not all edibles induce the same high, even at the same numerical dose. THC gummies, cookies and chocolate hit differently, and here is why.

Baked Goods

How To Choose and Buy Edibles Like A Pro

Who hasn’t had a magic brownie and freaked out when the effects peaked hours after consumption? Infused baked goods have been around for generations, and is what inspired the name of seminal cannabis activist Mary Jane “Brownie Mary” Rathbun.

Cannabis is fat-soluble, as opposed to water soluble, and cannabinoids bind to lipids, meaning the butter cocoa and eggs in most cookies, brownies and cereal treats are great at storing THC; an anecdotal High Times article deemed butter and coconut oil the best bases for these kinds of edibles. But because baked must, by definition, be baked and exposed to heat, it’s likely some of the potency will be burned off.

Chocolate

Similar to baked goods, chocolate also contains fats that cannabis compounds like to bind to, though in lesser amounts. Chocolate is also often made with ground flower or a cannabis oil for control, and doesn’t have to be baked and exposed to heat.

Chocolate masks the taste of cannabis well and is less heavy to eat in high doses if needed. However, some research raises the concern that chocolate could chemically interfere with how THC appears in product testing, according to Healthline, making it appear to be less than what the true value could be.

Gummies

Gummies may very well be the most popular form of edible today due to their ease with dosing, range of flavors and evolving infusion methods like nano-emulsions. Gummies are also more fast-acting than their other fat-heavy counterparts.

RELATED: Why You Need To Be Careful Using Edibles The First Time

Due to their formulation constraints, gummies are often made with a cannabis distillate (though some brands use hash or other forms of full-spectrum concentrate) to avoid a strong cannabis flavor, and are digested quickly, meaning they set in and taper off quicker than chocolate or a cookie. But they can also be enhanced in ways other edibles can’t, like having terpenes added to mimic strain profiles and provide their specific effects.

Drinks

Cannabis beverages had a great 2020, emerging as a market of alternatives to alcohol and alcohol-centric socialization while the country was on lockdown. They range in dose, with most sitting within the 5–10mg range, though there are many high-dose options as well. Most beverages nowadays use emulsion technology to create a fast-acting, consistent experience that mimics the onset of alcohol, but with THC, CBD and a blend of adaptogens and/or terpenes for nuance. Due to their liquid form and quick onset, however, cannabis drinks have the shortest intoxication period.

This is all to say, if you found what works for you, keep at it, or try something new if you’re feeling unsatisfied. No matter what form of (controlled) edible you choose to consume, you’re bound to have a good time.

How Marijuana Helps With Constipation

A new study found the prevalence of constipation was lower for those who recently consumed marijuana compared to those who had never used.

If you’re struggling with consistent healthy bowel movements, you might want to try smoking marijuana. According to  research published in The American Journal of Gastroenterology, those which recently smoked weed were less likely to suffer from constipation.

Scientists still don’t fully understand how cannabis affects the gastrointestinal system and digestive process. However, to better grasp the relationship, researchers identified American adults who completed the drug use and bowel movement questionnaires in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey over a 6-year period from 2005 to 2010. Using the Bristol Stool Form Scale, scientists then analyzed the likelihood of an individual suffering from chronic constipation or diarrhea based on recent marijuana use.

According to the study, recent weed consumption was associated with 30% lower odds of constipation. The prevalence of constipation was also lower for those who recently consumed marijuana compared to those who had never used or had used in the past. These results persisted when the scientists adjusted for demographic factors like race, sex, and socioeconomic status.

However, there was no relationship with recent toking and diarrhea symptoms.

“Our analysis is the first population-based human clinical study of marijuana and bowel function providing important insights into the aggregate effects of the various components of the marijuana plant on constipation,” the study’s authors wrote. “Owing to the high prevalence and burden of constipation in combination with the increasing availability of both recreational and medicinal cannabis, further studies are needed to identify how use of whole cannabis, different marijuana strains, and frequency of marijuana use exert their apparent effects on constipation.”

RELATED: Microdosing Marijuana For Depression: What To Expect

Previous research on marijuana’s effect on the gastrointestinal system has been conflicted. While the authors demonstrated an association between recreational marijuana use and constipation, other studies have provided different results.

“Current evidence suggests that cannabinoids slow colonic transit through actions on the CB1 receptor,” the researchers wrote. “However, a recent clinical trial reported that hemp seed pills improved constipation symptoms among patients with functional constipation, suggesting that the summative effect of the separate cannabinoids in the marijuana plant might have a unique effect on bowel motility.”

How To Cope With A Bad Marijuana High

0

Bad highs, although scary, are manageable if you stay calm. Here are some tips that can help you cope with an unwelcome high.

Bad highs can be awful. Flashbacks of previous experiences can even make people afraid of trying THC again. These episodes can range in intensity, but most leave you feeling like an anxious mess, even if you know that they’re temporary and not life threatening. It is something you want to avoid, but here are tips on how to cope with a bad marijuana high.

While no one has died from a marijuana overdose, some people have had panic attacks over them, which is concerning, especially now that our health system is congested with more important matters.

Bad highs are an amalgamation of lots of symptoms, but some of the most common ones include a racing heart, dry mouth, and anxiety. They’re also more likely to occur when you’re in a bad setting, such as being an anxious person in the midst of a pandemic.

The good news is that there are things you can do to alleviate your symptoms, even while alone and in quarantine. You should always remember that what you’re experiencing is a manifestation of anxiety and that it will wear off, even if you consumed a high dose of a super strong edible.

Here are some tactics that can help you feel better:

Talk to a friend

Talking to a friend or partner, whether you’re talking to them in person or chatting over the phone or video, can help a lot. Try reaching out to someone who is calm and not panicky, that way they can help you stay cool and remind you that all of the bad feelings you’re experiencing are temporary. If you’re in quarantine with someone, it can also be beneficial to hold their hand or hug them, since the physical sensation will make you feel good and help you stay grounded.

Pets are soothing, adorable and interactive — the perfect distraction for a bad high. Spend a good amount of time playing and cuddling with them, whether you’re playing fetch with your dog or using a flashlight to pester your cat.

Do something distracting

Put something on the TV, preferably something funny and lighthearted, that you’ve seen before to avoid getting anxious. You can also put on some relaxing music or start building a puzzle. All of these activities are soothing and will give your brain something to put its energy into that doesn’t require a lot of attention.

Be careful

It’s always better to be safe than sorry. When trying out new methods of consuming marijuana, start off with low doses, even if they don’t look that intimidating or you have experience with the drug. If you’re feeling stressed out or upset, your best option might be to avoid marijuana all together, since your mood is a big influence on your high.

Marijuana Hacks For The Average User

Do you already know your way around a bong? Are you returning to marijuana after a lengthy break and seeking some pointers? Here are marijuana hacks for the average user, the cannabis enthusiast who enjoys getting high but is looking to take it up a notch:

1. Construction Paper Can Keep Your Buds Fresh

There is no such thing as an expiration date for marijuana. It is a dried herb and can last a long time if aged correctly and stored properly. One of the most popular storing method is glass. Mason jars are awesome and can be found just ab0ut anywhere. With glass, your marijuana stays consistent … nothing gets in or out of the jar until you open it and allow oxygen to enter.

But sunlight is an enemy of cannabis; it loses potency the longer it is exposed to light. The solution? Pick up some construction paper (found in craft stores) and cut enough to wrap around the inside of your glass jar.

Your bud will be protected from the light, stay fresher longer and maintain its potency.

Tip: Use different colors for different strains. For example, use black for indicas and navy blue for sativas.

2. Put A Penny (Or Dime) In Your Grinder

Most intermediate cannabis enthusiasts know what kief is. But there are some of you out there who are not entirely sure how to get it.

The word keif comes from the Arabic word kayf, meaning pleasure or intoxication. Basically, it is the resinous trichomes that collects after cannabis buds are sifted either through a grinder or sieve.

Kief is a powder loaded with THC. And it can be found at the bottom of your grinder. But there is a simple way to get more kief while grinding your bud: Put a coin in the grinder. Find a dime or penny and get it clean with rubbing alcohol. Place the coin in the grinder chamber that your cannabis falls into. Shake the grinder a few times. And there you have it: More kief.

3. Remember CDs? Keep A Few Around

Before iTunes, Pandora and other streaming music sites, you had to buy CDs in order to listen to your favorite music. I know, how barbaric.

If you still have a few CDs around your home, keep a few near your stash. Here’s why:

When loading a bowl, put the CD carefully on top of your pipe, with the CD’s center directly over your bowl. Drop your ground cannabis through the hole. No wasteful spillage!

4. Do You Have An Orphan Sock? Save It

Next time you do a load of laundry and your dryer eats one of your sock, keep the orphan sock. Or if you are about to toss out a pair of socks, keep one.

Socks are great to store and carry gear. It’s not elegant and there are great cases for sale at most cannabis retailers, but it will work in a pinch. You can use the sock to store and carry grinders, pipes, jars, etc.

5. Sea Salt And Rubbing Alcohol Work Wonders

Isopropyl alcohol, commonly known as rubbing alcohol, is a must for any cannabis enthusiast. It is the go-to cleaning solution for glass.

Place your pipe or bong in a ziplock bag with rubbing alcohol and sea salt. Carefully shake the bag for 5-10 minutes. Keep the piece in the solution for another 20-3o minutes. Rinse with warm water.

It is always a better user experience when your pipe is sparkly clean. And if you are sharing, your friend will appreciate the gesture. It’s the polite thing to do.

6. Keep Your Lips From Drying Out

Consuming cannabis can give you cotton mouth, red eyes and dry lips. So hydrate, keep Visine handy and buy lip balm.

Seriously, lip balm is underrated. Keep some in your pocket. In your purse. In your car.

Added bonus: There are some hemp-based lip balm lines out there. Find some and stock up.

7. Brushing Your Teeth Never Felt So Good

This may sound strange, but it is true. Dentists recommend brushing for at least two minutes, but do you really take that much time? If you are a little high, time flies and you may even exceed the two-minute rule and continue brushing.

If you have an electric toothbrush, even better! The sensation is enhanced and it just feels so much better.

Added bonus: Once you have cleaned your teeth and your mouth is all minty, it may dissuade you from the munchies. Who wants to eat Doritos after brushing your teeth?

Can You Prevent A Hangover By Eating A Big Meal

When seeking advice on how to cure a hangover, a common trope is how to avoid one in the first place (hey, thanks!) And that often includes the phrases “soak up” and “greasy food”. And that can easily lead to a junk food binge of pizza, omelettes, hamburgers and anything you can get at a drive-thru, really. But can you prevent a hangover by eating a big meal?

According to an emergency medicine physician in New York, there’s some merit behind that theory.

Alexis Halpern, MD says by eating a big meal, you’re basically creating a buffer between your stomach and the alcohol. It may not completely prevent a hangover, but chances are, you’ll feel tons better.

https://giphy.com/gifs/t49Q3o13L4jRK

Now, what to eat. Halpern says a good rule is to stick with heavier foods that take longer to break down in your body. Especially ones that are nutrient dense. So instead of that slice of pepperoni pizza, try eating a burrito bowl. Water-rich foods are also a good idea, like cantaloupe, watermelon and other juicy fruits to keep you hydrated. Avocados and bananas are another good choice, because they contain important electrolytes. “If you give your body back the things that it needs and the things that it loses when you drink, you’re going to feel better no matter what,” she says.

Of course, not everyone plans to get drunk. So if you find yourself getting tipsy (or maybe you’re already a little wasted) and pizza is the only thing around, by all means, dive in. Eating while you’re drinking/drunk is better than nothing at all (but no promises you won’t see that pizza again by night’s end).

https://giphy.com/gifs/jerseyshore-jersey-shore-family-vacation-28DcrTyY7Q7WeK7Fi3

And last but not least, water. It’s essential when you’re consuming alcohol. Halpern says it’s important — and we’ve all heard this before — to drink more water than alcohol in order to prevent a hangover. Says Halpern, “Try to have a drink, then a glass of water if that’s how you need to think of it. Just make sure you’re aware and keeping up with yourself.”

Now you have some knowledge about can you prevent a hangover by eating a big meal. Have a fun night out!

Dating App Says Caring About This Gets More Dates

0

Agreeing on global warming and other environmental issues is very serious business for OKCupid members.

This dating app says caring about this gets more dates, which is a good thing all around. According to OKCupid’s data, an important determinant for swiping right is agreeing on Global Warming. In an interview with Earther, the dating site reports that there’s been a 240% increase in words that include all sorts of environmental issues, ranging from people like “Greta Thunberg,” to terms like “recycle” and “global warming.”

A surprisingly large percentage of OKCupid users appear to care about the state of the environment. Nearly all of them, 97%, believe climate change is real and 82% of them say that it’s something worth being concerned about.

OKCupid workers found global warming dictated people’s dating habits to such a large degree that they tweeted about it. Of course, it went viral.

“Since your match percentage with someone shows how compatible you two are, if you are a climate change activist and they think climate change is fake news, your match percentage is going to decrease,” said Michael Kaye, OKCupid’s Global communications manager.

OKCupid differentiates itself from Tinder, Bumble and other dating sites because it provides matches for you according to answers on a quiz you take when you sign up. This is the method used to provide you with pairings, which has its pros and cons.

RELATED: 8 Tips That Make For Super-Successful First Dates

This isn’t the first time where hot topic issues have influenced people’s dating app preferences. Last December, Tinder published a list of the most discussed topics on their app. Their results show that in previous years, Millennials used to talk about traveling. Now that the dating app is made up of a large percentage of Gen Z, the most discussed topics include politics and personal causes.

A few years ago, your politics — one of the biggest determinants on your stance regarding global warming — wouldn’t matter as much for your dating prospects. Nowadays, they’re almost all that matters. While there’s the occasional viral tweet here and there that talks about someone’s personal experience with dating a Trump supporter, these kinds of stories are limited. Most of us choose to date people who we won’t want to murder over dinner.

What Is California Sober

Some buzz terms pop up on the radar frequently, while others have been floating around for a while. But “California Sober” was a new one for us. It is more than just Demi Lovato’s hot song from 2021. Some people call themselves California sober because they use marijuana in place of alcohol and other addictive substances. Others define it as using alcohol and marijuana in moderation while avoiding other drugs.

Cannabis and sobriety have had a fraught relationship that now seems to be changing, and possibly even growing into a new concept altogether. Not everyone’s reasons for sobriety are health related, and not all of them are due to an aversion to intoxication—some people just prefer no intoxicants.

The term popped up in a piece by cannabis author and rave queen Michelle Lhooq about taking a breather from one type of hard partying. Says Lhooq:

“The truth is that I will always love drugs and raving—and a future without either would be spiritually unfulfilling. Being Cali sober allows me to keep my feet in both subcultures, while its parameters make it easier not to cave to temptation. I am able to take from these experiences what I’m looking for—mind-expansion, self-exploration, empathetic connection, sensorial amplification—without the addiction and selfishness, and other types of ugliness that I associate with many non-psychedelic drugs.”

RELATED: The Key To Treating Alcoholism With Medical Marijuana

As natural as it came across in her description, Reddit users couldn’t come to agreement on the term; this seemed more like a beef over the use of the term “sobriety” rather than the idea that someone can abstain from hard drugs and have a word for it.

Sobriety used to mean one thing: a hardline abstention from all substances. But considering it often doesn’t apply to caffeine and nicotine, it’s starting to make sense to some people that cannabis may fall under the umbrella of sobriety, being that it is only a mild intoxicant when taken in moderation.

It’s true that some may develop an addiction to cannabis, but research is also showing that cannabis might help dramatically reduce side effects and aid withdrawal to opioids and other drugs.

RELATED: Proof That Marijuana Is More Than 100 Times Safer Than Alcohol

Regardless of motivation and result, it makes sense that someone would label a mostly sober sitch that involves cannabis after the weediest weed friendly state: California.

No matter what someone is “using”, compassion, non-judgement, and care are the much more important ways to approach addictions of all kinds. Humans are imperfect and lowering the stigma of substance reliance, addiction, or assistance is a huge deal— society needs to shift if we’re going to heal the pains of the more damaging addictions. If cannabis is a ‘softer’ way to come down from something, more power to those who use it in such a way.

Science Explains How Marijuana Inspires Awe

Marijuana regulates two subtle, but important gateways through which we experience life.

Regular cannabis users often report an important side effect of smoking marijuana — everything in your life seems amazing. Pizza becomes heavenly. Nature walks seem like you’re exploring the Garden of Eden. Mediocre Netflix shows elevate to masterful works of art. Now, science explains how marijuana inspires awe.

This is by design — your brain’s design, more specifically. We don’t usually talk about awe as an emotion in public. Negative feelings like anger, sadness, and fear crowd the discourse space instead. But awe is an essential ingredient to the experience of being alive. The emotion derives from a novel sensation or moment in your life. A feeling that you can’t believe you’re lucky enough to witness something you might describe as magical.

Awe occurs because of an almond-shaped ball collection of cell bodies called the amygdala. Previously you may have heard of the amygdala described as the brain’s “fear center.” That vastly oversimplifies it. The amygdala regulates many of your emotions and behaviors, including pleasurable feelings like awe. As explained by Timmen L. Cermak, a psychiatrist who specializes in addiction medicine, one way the amygdala facilitates awe is by organizing incoming stimuli.

“When an unfamiliar stimulus arrives, for example wearing a new ring, the amygdala adds a special ‘zing’ of alertness to the feel of the ring,” Cermak writes. “This draws our attention to the new sensations on our finger. After a while, when the feel of the ring becomes the unchanging norm, the amygdala stops adding the zing. We accommodate, or habituate, to the ring’s feel and it falls into the background of our awareness.”

RELATED: Study Shows How Marijuana Can Motivate You To Exercise

Guess what disrupts that familiar feeling of the same-old, same-old? Your body’s natural endocannabinoid system, which is triggered by an uptake of cannabinoids — or, put simply, by puffing a joint. It lowers the barrier to what your amygdala, which has a dense collection of cannabinoid receptors, considers novel or new. It then instructs your brain to release neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and serotonin, causing pizza to taste like the best thing you’ve ever tasted.

“We dishabituate to the world and many stimuli rise up out of the background and back into awareness,” Cermak writes of this effect.

what is reiki and is it right for you

But cannabis also produces awe in a more subtle way. A 2015 study published in Emotion analyzed the relationship between inflammation and negative emotions. Researchers noted that poor mental health often leads to poor physical health. One example was that high inflammation correlated with clinical depression. However, researchers discovered the strongest relationship was between inflammation levels and awe.

“Why would awe be such a potent predictor of reduced proinflammatory cytokines?” researchers wrote. “One reason is that proinflammatory cytokines encourage social withdrawal and reduce exploration, which would serve the adaptive purpose of helping an individual recover from injury or sickness.”

RELATED: How Marijuana And CBD Help Create Calm, Healing Walks

“On the other hand, awe is associated with curiosity and a desire to explore, suggesting antithetical behavioral responses to those found during inflammation,” they added. “In this sense, experiences of awe may be part of an integrated response that includes emotional and biological responses that facilitate approach and social exploration.”

Multiple studies have noted marijuana anti-inflammatory abilities. It is within reason that by reducing inflammation, cannabis also opens up users to experiencing awe. Sometimes, you hear marijuana causing users to feel like a kid again. This can be meant jokingly, as in you can’t function well enough to perform adult activities, like laundry or cooking. But it can also highlight those big-eyed wonders we associate with childhood — how new and abundant life seems. Put another way, marijuana helps remind users how full and possible life can be.

Why You Should Never Refreeze Melted Ice Cream

If you’re guilty of leaving your ice cream out to melt, join the club. Especially during summer months, people generally don’t think twice about bringing a tub of ice cream outside, but when that happens, you could be putting your health at risk. Here is why you should never refreeze melted ice cream.

Let’s not forget that ice cream is made of dairy (and sometimes eggs), and when it’s left out to sit in the sun, bacteria can start growing. And if you dig into the (what was once) cool treat, you could get an angry case of cramps, diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and other symptoms associated with food poisoning.

Your best bet is to avoid eating melted ice cream all together or making sure you put the ice cream back into the freezer immediately after scooping some for yourself. Or just eat the whole damn pint already.

The Daily Mail has some even worse news when it comes to contaminated summer foods you didn’t think could make you sick.

And it isn’t only processed food and drink that can ruin your weekend. Cantaloupes and watermelons have been linked to Salmonella, E. coli and Listeria outbreaks, as pathogens from the soil can reside in the fruit’s skin.

Washing your fruit under running water is usually sufficient, but bacteria can be introduced to the inside of the melon if the outside is not washed properly, giving them all the nutrients they need and the proper temperature and time to grow.

While it’s usually pretty clear when fruit has turned (rotten smell, mold), Listeria can grow in the fridge with no smell or taste. The Daily Mail says if you’re worried about getting sick from food you thought was safe, make sure to wash your hands thoroughly, monitor the temperature of your food (no melted ice cream!) and ensure you don’t leave food in the warm sun for too long.

To recap when you should never refreeze frozen ice cream – conditions in ice cream are prime for bacteria growth and as a result, the risk of food poisoning is high. Besides that, the dreamy creamy texture you’re craving would simply not be satisfied if you tried to eat refrozen ice cream
