Psychedelic Research Could Provide Answers For Various Psychiatric Disorders

0

Hallucinogenic substances like ayahuasca, LSD, and psilocybin were effective in treating various psychiatric disorders, ranging from depression to autism.

Psychedelic research has generated significant momentum over the past several years. Johns Hopkins University announced earlier this month the Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research, which will focus on the efficacy of psilocybin mushrooms, LSD, MDMA, and other psychedelic substances in the treatment of mental health illnesses. The center, founded with a $17 million investment from private donors, handed psychedelic research a legitimacy long sought after in the field.

According to a scientific review of previous psychedelic studies published in the Journal of Psychiatric Practice, psychedelic research ranging from 1946 to 2017 demonstrated that substances like ayahuasca, ibogaine, LSD, psilocybin, more were effective in treating various psychiatric disorders. The review provides a foundation for the potential medical efficacy of psychedelics, as 15 out of the 16 studies researchers analyzed “produced clinically significant reduction” in symptoms. More importantly, the review found that subjects who had not responded to traditional treatments experienced many of these improvements.

“The conditions treated ranged from depression to autism, with the largest volume of research dedicated to substance use disorders,” researchers wrote. “The majority of studies that were reviewed demonstrated significant associations with improvement in the conditions investigated.”

The researchers at University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, the group behind the study, found that each hallucinogen impacted patients differently, though some psychedelics similarly improved some psychiatric disorders. For example, the review highlighted two small studies that highlighted ayahuasca’s ability to help those with treatment-resistant depression. Those patients diagnosed with a recurrent major depressive disorder saw their symptoms improve after just one single dose of ayahuasca, though the substance did induce vomiting in half of the subjects.

Meanwhile, a small study concluded that MDMA could assist women suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder caused by sexual trauma. Across the board, patients who received a higher dosage of MDMA experienced greater reduction in symptoms. A large portion of the studies researchers analyzed focused on how psychedelics could assist in treating substance abuse disorders for alcohol, cannabis, and cocaine. Ketamine, ibogaine, LSD, and dipropyltryptamine (DPT) showed significant evidence in helping patients maintain sobriety.

“While the successes reported in the studies reviewed here are intriguing, they should not be misinterpreted as an endorsement for the use of hallucinogens to medicate any of the above conditions,” researchers wrote. “This review was inherently biased by the selection criteria, and dangers of hallucinogenic drug use were not the focus of this review. This should not, however, distract from the potential benefits described.”

That’s where an institution like Johns Hopkins comes in, especially with its reported funding. The 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health estimated that more than 40 million Americans (15.3% of the U.S. population) have experimented with hallucinogens at least once. A 2018 survey by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration also reported that an estimated 5.6 million Americans used hallucinogens last year. Momentum for psychedelic research will only continue to grow in the coming years, as even the federal government has acknowledged their possible therapeutic benefits. For those suffering from psychiatric disorders resisting treatment, the answers could be coming sooner rather than later.

Was Becoming A Duchess Meghan Markle’s Master Plan?; Ariana Grande Cuts Her Iconic Ponytail

Her iconic ponytail seems to be one of the secret ingredients of Ariana Grande’s new perfume; Was a royal life always in the cards for Duchess Megan?

Meghan Markle Allegedly Said “Becoming A Duchess” Was Her Master Plan

Via iHeart Radio:

Before Meghan Markle married Prince Harry and became literal royalty, she was best known for her role as Rachel Zane on the long-running legal drama Suits. Like most actors and actresses, Meghan got her start in the entertainment industry with an acting-adjacent job on TV. Back in 2006, Meghan starred as a “briefcase girl” on Deal or No Deal. She was even on the popular game show at the same time as Chrissy Teigen.

Now that Meghan is a Duchess, though, people from her past get asked about her all the time. Recently, Us Weekly asked former Deal or No Deal host Howie Mandell about the Duchess of Sussex and he had some interesting things to say. Mandell told the celebrity gossip magazine he doesn’t think Meghan will ever make a return to acting, despite rumors she’d appear in the final seasons of Suits.

According to Mandell, a royal life was always in the cards for Meghan. “Well, she’ll be seen on television, because she’s a duchess,” he continued. “But that was her plan. I used to say to her, ‘Meghan, open the case.’ And she used to say, ‘Not now, I’m doing some work on becoming a duchess.’ It was the master plan, so I don’t think she’ll come back for us.”

Though it’s totally possible Mandell was joking around with this anecdote (or that Meghan was joking around back in the day), it seems like Meghan predicted her life as a member of the British royal family over a decade ago. If the crown fits, wear it.

Via iHeart Radio:

Everyone knows that Ariana Grande’s ponytail is her thing, so it’s quite a sight to see the pop titan cut the iconic ponytail in her new fragrance ad, which is appropriately named “thank u, next.”

On Thursday (September 19), the pop titan launched the perfume with a lengthy TV spot, which mocks her music video of the same name, where she recreated teen classics like Mean Girls, Legally Blonde and Bring It On. Unlike her viral video, this ad sees everyone in school, including Victoria Monet and new mom Colleen Ballinger, gossip about the perfume. “Supposedly she uses juicy raspberries in it so I’ve only been eating juicy raspberries for months so my breast milk will taste like her perfume smells,” the former says.

“Rumor has it, she put part of her ponytail in it,” another person says, before viewers catch a glimpse of Grande literally cutting her ponytail and putting it into the perfume. “Honestly, I’m not the biggest Ariana Grande fan, but I do hear the new fragrance is… somewhat promising,” Grande says towards the end of the video.

“thank u, next,” which is a collaboration with Ulta Beauty, serves as her seventh fragrance. “I wanted to make a fragrance that smells related to my first fragrance Ari but more summery, so I revisited Ari’s fruity pear and raspberry notes and changed it up by adding some coconut,” she previously said in a statement. “I was inspired to design a bottle that represented the message of my song ‘thank u next’—the emergence of the perfume from the broken heart represents moving forward from a challenging chapter.”

Angel Olsen gifts us with a new music video, Brittany Howard releases her much awaited solo debut and Caroline Polachek has a new song.

This Week’s Music is a weekly column that discusses the weeks’ best, worst, and most interesting songs. We try to select songs of different artists and genres to keep things interesting and to please a variety of music fans.

This week Angel Olsen gifts us with a new music video, Brittany Howard releases her much awaited solo debut and Caroline Polachek has a new song. Check them out.

Rock

Angel Olsen – Lark

“Lark” is a song that starts off slow and quietly, building up to a grand and sweeping chorus, perfectly reflected in the music video with aerial shots that zoom in and out of Olsen running through gorgeous landscapes. It’s a song that’s not as strange and alien as her last single, “All Mirrors,” but that keeps Angel Olsen’s trademark eeriness and ambition.

Brittany Howard – Georgia

Known for her explosive vocals on the Grammy award winning band Alabama Shakes, Brittany Howard surprised everyone when she decided to separate from the band and to work on her solo music. The result, an 11 track record called “Jaime,” is personal and different, something that the singer could have only achieved when stepping away from the projects and bands she’s best known for. “Jaime” is one of the best and most distinct records of the year, with “Georgia” being one of its stand out songs.

Pop

Caroline Polachek – So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings

“So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings” is amazing on name alone. Add in some great lyrics, airy vocals and a breezy and inventive melody and you have one of the weirdest and most fun pop songs of the year. Caroline Polachek’s new album is called “Pang” and it’s set for release this October 18th.

5 Ways To Decrease The Damage Caused By Sitting At A Desk All Day

0

Desk jobs are bad for your body, ruining your posture and messing with your back, neck and wrists. Here are some tips to preserve your body when spending most of your time sitting.

All sorts of studies say that spending most of your hours sitting down is a recipe for a bad back and an early death. Seriously, this was proven by scientists. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, work-related musculoskeletal problems made up 32% of worker injuries in 2014, ranging from carpal tunnel syndrome to pain in backs.

While sitting down for most parts of the day is a prerequisite for everyone with a 9 – 6 job, not all is lost for our health and our necks and our backs. Numerous studies say that a short walk or some brief exercises every once in a while can reduce the damage on your back. Check out five simple ways to avoid desk-job injuries:

Be mindful of your posture

Lower back damage and pain is the most common side effect of having a bad posture, which is a given when you spend 6 hours a day hunched over a desk. To prevent this, invest in a good chair, one that allows you to have your back straight and your feet firmly planted on the ground. You can also purchase a lumbar pillow, to control your posture even more. If you have lower back pain, the easiest way to treat is to push your hips front and back while sitting in your desk chair, loosening up the muscles and relieving pressure.

Protect your wrists

You’re putting your risks in serious danger when you spend most of your day pounding on your keyboard and clicking on a mouse. The harm you cause your wrists may be due to typing too hard, having poor posture and overuse. To prevent this try holding your wrists loose and hovering horizontally over the air as you type. Avoid placing them on the desk, even if having them hover sounds exhausting.

Accessorize your workspace

You’ve probably seen a few coworkers sitting on yoga balls and using standing desks. Yes, they’re kooky looking, but they serve a purpose. Sitting on a yoga ball keeps your pelvis sharp and strengthens your core, while the standing desk allows for better circulation.

Have some anti-inflammatory foods

While the damage on your back won’t be reversed by your diet, it certainly helps to eat healthy! Instead of having something quick, delicious and greasy, go for anti-inflammatory foods, which are usually plant-based (berries, nuts, avocados, whole grains, etc.). These foods will make you feel better and maybe remind you to take a walk now and then.

Stretch and walk around

The best advice on this list is to stretch and walk around, even if it’s just for a lap around your room or office. Stretches work well for alleviating pain and release tension, and walking around will make you feel better and correct your posture and the positioning of your body.

The most famous beagle, without a doubt, is Snoopy. Charles Schulz once stated, “Snoopy didn’t start off being a Beagle. It’s just that ‘beagle’ is a funny word”. And the Beagle itself is funny, too.

The most popular hound among American dog owners, the breed is known for its hunting skills, as well as being happy-go-lucky, mischievous and silly.  The breed comes in color variations including red and white, lemon and tri-color. The Beagle is incredibly loyal, and is an ideal family companion. Kate Middleton Was Just Upstaged By A Victoria’s Secret Model

Sure, it’s fun to see the future King and Queen roll up next to your car, but how long until the novelty wears off? According to one parent, it’s already become stale.

You may think Kate Middleton would be the most whispered about mum at school drop-off in the mornings. But according to at least one parent, there is someone even more interesting.

Earlier this month, Kate and William were photographed dropping Charlotte and George off at Thomas’s School in Battersea for the start of the new school year. It was a first for Kate. She was too overcome with severe morning sickness when she was pregnant with Louis to make George’s first day of school back in 2017, but she was able to make an appearance for Charlotte’s fist day. Fortunately for the busy mom, the siblings attend the same school.

As the Daily Express reports, parents of children who attend this private London school are expected to be hands-on with their children’s school experience.

Jane Moore, a panelist on the U.K. talk show “Loose Women” gave some insider knowledge of the school, including what will be expected of Kate and Wills, saying:

“It’s a school that really expects parental involvement.

“The parents are very heavily involved in the school so [Kate and William] will be as well.”

So, basically, nobody should be surprised when the royal couple drops off their kids. Sure, it’s fun to see the future King and Queen roll up next to your car, but how long until the novelty wears off? According to one parent, it’s already become stale.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, one of the fellow mums at the school said that there’s another parent that rivals the Duchess of Cambridge, especially where the dads are concerned.

“No one really gives Kate a second glance when she does the school drop-off,” said the anonymous mom. “We have a Victoria’s Secret model doing the school run, too, and the dads are far more interested in her!”

In addition to Charlotte and George, there’s another royal tyke who attends the school: Maud Windsor, the daughter of Lord Frederick Windsor, who is the only son of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent.

Just when you think you’re the popular kid.

Meme Of The Week: Alienstock Music Festival Produces A Fresh Wave Of Alien Memes

0

Alienstock is the Woodstock of music festivals for people invested in Area 51 and government schemes.  And it’s spawned a bunch of memes.

For some reason, alien memes keep coming back to us.

A couple of months ago, the government freaked out because a Facebook group was created to “storm Area 51,” also known as that mystical place where a lot of UFO stuff happens. Long story short, there was no storming of the place, but someone did organize a music festival in its honor. It’s called Alienstock.

The music festival is taking place in Rachel, Nevada, and, as of Thursday, there are over 500 people in attendance. More are still wondering in, it’s a little creepy.

No matter what the Feds do, whether there’s aliens or if there will actually be any live music at this supposed festival, at least we’ve got the memes and the fact that this is happening in the first place. Here are some of our favorites responses:

Former Chicago Bulls star Dennis Rodman says Madonna offered him $20 million to “get her pregnant”; ‘The Bachelor’ star talks about dating Demi Lovato: “The woman is quite astounding and amazing.”

‘The Bachelorette’ Star Mike Johnson Spills On Demi Lovato Romance

Via iHeart Radio:

Demi Lovato and Mike Johnson were previously spotted having dinner in Los Angeles after months of online flirting, but it seems as if The Bachelor star is indeed interested in more than just friendship when it comes to the pop star.

Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Johnson, 31, confirmed that he did go out on a date with Lovato, 27, but kept the details of the outing scarce.”Demi Lovato and I went on a date. The woman is quite astounding and amazing. And that’s all I’ll say on that,” the reality TV star told the outlet of the budding romance.

As per PEOPLE, Johnson’s appearance on the Bachelor Happy Hour podcast with Rachel Lindsay and Ali Fedotowsky-Manno heard him confess that the pair had met more than once. “I think she’s amazing. She’s incredibly humble,” he said. “When Demi and I are together, it’s laughter and we talk about real sh*t. Like, she’s a down-to-earth woman and I respect it so much. And she’s just a really humble, really cool, really fun, down-to-earth person.”

As for what the two were doing together, Johnson strategically said, “My status of the relationship with Demi and I are that we are two people exploring each other.”

Prior to meeting in real life, Lovato and Johnson had been flirting via social media captions and replies. After Lovato admitted that she accepted his rose when he got eliminated during the 15th season, she took to Twitter to confess that her mom already loved him when he tweeted something addressing the pop star as his future wife. “I’m flirting with her too. Tell her, ‘What’s up, baby?’ I would definitely take her out for an initial date, yeah,” he previously said. “100 percent not scared about it at all. I would be like, ‘Oh my God! Girl, come here.’”

Dennis Rodman Claims Madonna Offered Him $20 Million For A Baby: ‘Oh, I Tried’

Via Yahoo! Entertainment:

Dennis Rodman told a wild story about his high-profile relationship with Madonna many years ago. The NBA star and Material Girl dated in the ’90s and were apparently very close to having a baby together. Rodman wrote about Madonna’s desire to have a kid with him in his book Bad As I Wanna Be, but he shared a new detail about that time. According to the former Chicago Bulls star, Madonna offered him $20 million to “get her pregnant” — and she would write the check “if the baby was born.”

While stopping by Power 105.1’s The Breakfast Club, Charlamagne tha God asked Rodman if it was true he and the singer broke up because she wanted to get pregnant.

“I tried [to get her pregnant],” the 58-year-old said. Rodman said he received an urgent call from Madonna one day when he was in Las Vegas.

“I was rolling the dice in Vegas and she was in New York and she calls,” he continues. “So I say, ‘Hold the dice.’ I [answer] the call and she says, ‘Dennis, I’m ovulating.’ And I say, ‘What? You’re ovulating? What is that?’”

Rodman added, “I was trying to f*** with her. And she was like ‘you know, ovulating.’ So I say, ‘OK, great. I’ll be there in five hours.’ … So, I put the dice down and said ‘hold the table.’”

“[Madonna] sent a plane for me — a G5 — and I went to the airport, flew [to New York], went over to her house, did my thing, went back on the plane, got back, they held the table and I started playing dice again,” he shared. “That’s a true story!”

Charlamagne asked if he regretted not getting her pregnant.

“No! Well… Well,” Rodman replied. “She asked me if I got her pregnant she’d pay me $20 million… That’s if the baby was born.”

Rodman also scoffed at the notion Madonna made him more famous. When Charlamagne asked if he “gave credit to Madonna for making him a star,” the athlete replied, “It’s the other way around.”

“In 1993 I think her career was declining and she said the reason why she dated me was because I was a bad boy,” he said. “That’s why she dated me. I was going up and she was pretty much leveling off.”

How Greasy Foods Might Make CBD More Effective

A new study says that ingesting foods containing high amounts of fat might boost the therapeutic effects of CBD.

Most things in life can be improved with a slice of pizza and a greasy burger. Thanks to some science, we can now add CBD to this list.

Researchers from the University of Minnesota discovered that consuming foods with high amounts of fat before ingesting CBD improved the cannabinoid’s absorption rate by a large margin, allowing for more therapeutic effects.

The study, published in the journal Epilepsia, provided CBD capsules to a group of eight patients suffering from the disease, and documented their responses to the drug — both while fasting and while consuming a high fat meal. While the scope of it was very limited, the results were promising.

RELATED: Is Legal Marijuana Creating More Junk Food Junkies?

Patients who consumed a fatty meal and later ingested CBD experienced 14 times more CBD effects than patients who consumed the cannabinoid while fasting.

Photo by Stephanie McCabe via Unsplash.

“The type of food can make a large difference in the amount of CBD that gets absorbed into the body. Although fatty foods can increase the absorption of CBD, it can also increase the variability, as not all meals contain the same amount of fat,” explains one of the authors of the study.

CBD has long shown promise for treating and preventing seizures, presumably why researchers decided to conduct this study in the first place.

Although CBD reacts differently depending on the body and the ailment that it’s targeting, learning this fact about fat foods is curious, because it goes against traditional beliefs of drugs and their relationships with foods. The latter traditionally diminishes the effects of whatever is being ingested.

Researchers from the study claim that this discovery may reduce costs for patients with epilepsy, decreasing the amount of CBD they must consume in the long term. It also proves that high fat foods are the best method of alternative medicine.

How Donald Trump Holds Significant Sway on Marijuana Legalization

The sitting president, and the public’s faith in the executive office, greatly influences how the American public feels about marijuana, according to a new study.

Public support for cannabis has never been higher in America. Recent polls have shown nearly two-thirds of U.S. citizens support the federal legalization of cannabis. Advancement of decriminalization and legalization efforts in various states by advocate groups have driven this newfound support. But according to a recent study, it’s the President of the United States who has historically had the biggest influence on public perception of marijuana.

“Findings indicate that confidence in the executive branch, fear of crime, and presidential drug rhetoric predict attitudes toward legalization despite controls for other factors such as estimated levels of marijuana use and arrests,” the study’s authors wrote.

Utilizing data from the General Social Survey and the American Presidency Project, researchers wanted to examine “the relationship between the president and Americans’ attitudes toward marijuana legalization from 1975 through 2016.” Published in the Deviant Behavior journal earlier this year, the study connected that data through presidential documents, State of the Union speeches, and more.

RELATED: FBI Worried About Corruption In The Marijuana Industry

Official White House Photo by Joyce N. Boghosian

For example, the study found that “each annual percent increase in SOTU words about drugs predicts a decreased odds of favoring legalization of about 6%,” according to Marijuana Moment. But on the other hand, how people felt about the sitting President held significant sway as well. Expressing confidence in the Oval Office correlated with 29% decrease in supporting legalization when compared to those who “hardly any confidence” in the executive branch.

The biggest data points in terms of public support of marijuana legalization were the 1980s and 2014. Due to President Ronald Reagan’s harsh anti-drug rhetoric and policies, public support for marijuana dropped by 27% during his terms. But 2014 marked an important turning point, as it signified the first time since 1975 that more people publicly supported legalization than those who opposed.

RELATED: Why The US Will Never Elect Another Anti-Marijuana President

“While attitudes toward legalization of marijuana have varied greatly over time, so has presidential rhetoric about marijuana and drugs,” researchers wrote. “This project supports the hypothesis that presidential drug rhetoric is related to public opinion about drugs, and more specifically, about marijuana.”

Throughout his tenure, Donald Trump has left the legalization and regulation of marijuana sales to the states. He did employ noted prohibitionist Jeff Sessions as Attorney General for a stretch, and Sessions did try to revive anti-marijuana sentiments. But that mostly ended when William Barr replaced Sessions as Attorney General. Marijuana legalization appears to be an important political talking point this election season, with reports indicating Trump will soon support marijuana legalization to boost his reelection chances.
