The Moon Landing Was Staged And Other Space Conspiracies

0

On July 20, 1969, astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong stepped upon the surface of the Moon, while Michael Collins piloted the command module in orbit, marking the first time humans had reached the celestial body…that is, if you believe the “official story.” If you’re skeptical, you’re not alone. Anywhere between 6% to 20% of Americans believe the event was a fabrication. The Flat Earth Society has accused NASA of filming a staged landing, in a space conspiracy involving Walt Disney Studios, Arthur C. Clarke, and Stanley Kubrick.

Lunar landing hoaxes are not the only space-related conspiracies stoners have been reading and debating about for the last 50 years. Theories about alien contact, flat Earth and elaborate cover-ups abound, but the following are some of the more popular conspiracy theories that have endured for decades.

Nibiru, 12th Planet

Many conspiracists contend that our history and current society has been influenced by alien astronauts, one of those were Zecharia Sitchin, who promoted theories surrounding a planet called Nibiru. This planet is home, according to Sitchin’s theories, to a race of ancient astronauts called Anunnaki, responsible for the creation of Sumerian culture on Earth. Stitchin also contends that the Anunnaki genetically engineered Homo sapiens to enslave them and replace Anunnaki gold miners.

Roswell

In the summer of 1947 a flying object crashed at a ranch near the New Mexican town of Roswell, which the US military eventually identified as a weather balloon. Initially, the military itself announced recovery of a “flying disk,” later clarifying it was a weather balloon, which we now know was actually observing Soviet atomic weapons tests. For decades the incident lied mostly dormant until Charles Berlitz and William Moore’s book “The Roswell Incident” was published in 1980. Their version of events holds that aliens were observing nuclear weapons testing in New Mexico when lightning hit their craft, causing it to crash, killing the extraterrestrials on board, which was then followed by a government cover-up.

As time went on, the conspiracy grew in complexity, and culminated in a fabricated 17 minute film of a purported autopsy of one of the alien bodies recovered at Roswell. Released in 1995, the film was broadcast nationally by the Fox TV network, airing 3 times, seeing ratings go up with each subsequent broadcast. Eventually, the source of the footage, Londoner Ray Santilli, admitted it was a fake, but says it’s based on real footage provided to him by a retired military cameraman who wished to remain anonymous. Santilli says the film has degraded to point of being unwatchable, save for a few frames, which he claims are embedded into the staged reconstruction, but has never identified which frames are from the original film.

Flat Earth

The notion that the Earth is flat rather than a globe, despite overwhelming confirmation to the contrary, has roots in fringe interpretation of the Bible. English author Samuel Rowbotham published ‘Zetetic Astronomy: Earth is not a Globe’ in 1865, motivated by his particular interpretation of the Bible, he and his followers aimed to defend their notion of astronomy, believing contemporary astronomy incompatible with the Bible, and that Antarctica is an ice wall along the edge of the planet.

RELATED: These People Believe Earth Is Hollow, Filled With Aliens And Nazis

Religious inspiration for belief in a flat Earth has waned over the years, with modern believers more likely to be motivated by a distrust of government and international bodies such as the UN. Many “flat earthers” believe in vast conspiracies involving groups, from governments to private airlines, in on the cover-up and the dissemination of what they believe to be lies. Last year, this conspiracy theory led daredevil Mike Hughes to spend $20,000 to home-build a rocket, in order to observe the Earth’s shape from a higher vantage. Hughes reached 1,875 feet before hard landing, but remains resolute in his belief in a flat Earth.

Reptilians

In the same vein as Stitchin’s claims, British conspiracy theorist David Icke believes that blood-drinking, shape-shifting, reptilian aliens, or alien-human hybrids, live in underground bases and secretly run the world’s governments and economies. These aliens come from the Alpha Draconis star system, about 300 light years away, and Icke has connected the supposed alien overlords to powerful families, such as the Merovingians, the Rothschilds, Bushes, and the British Royals.

Esoteric Hitlerism

Perhaps one of the weirdest alien conspiracy theories, Esoteric Hitlerism combines mysticism, Biblical scripture, extraterrestrials, and white supremacy. One of its more prominent proponents, Miguel Serrano, was a Chilean-born Neo-Nazi, and believed that an ancient race of aliens lived in an ethereal state until they saw decided to take human form, as the Aryan race, to magnanimously rule the other races. This golden age, according to Serrano’s works, was the Bible’s Eden, the fall from grace came as a result of miscegenation, and that in order to restore paradise, those of Aryan descent must work to purify their bloodline. Oh and Hitler survived WWII and is living in Antartica.

Cannabis can inspire deep thought and critical thinking, but before diving deep into weird space theories on YouTube, remember, anyone can say anything on the internet, it doesn’t necessarily make it true.

Why Meghan Markle Has Traded Her Messy Bun

Since giving birth to baby Archie in May, the Duchess of Sussex has been sporting a new look. Meghan Markle has traded her messy bun for a sleeker, more tidy look. And if you believe experts, it has nothing to do with fashion choice.

Meghan Markle has been seen wearing her hair in a pulled back bun during several outings, most recently “The Lion King” premier in London last weekend (where she met Beyonce and Jay-Z). It’s not super out of character for her, but it is quite a departure from the laid back, more approachable style we’ve come to recognize (and love) her for.

The Daily Mail has been keeping track, counting four times in two months Markle has rocked the more serious up-do, including Wimbledon, Trouping the Colour and Archie’s christening. Here she is with Harry in London last Sunday.

Celebrity hair stylist James Johnson says this type of hairdo makes total sense for a new mom, because it keeps the hair from further postpartum hair loss.

“When you’re pregnant your hair cycle stops so you don’t shed any hair, so when you give birth, all the hair you should have lost in the nine months falls out over a quick period.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bscvlm5lOYi/

Many women experience thicker hair during pregnancy because of an increase in hormones, which doesn’t actually make the hair thicker, rather it keeps hair from shedding at its usual rate. And then when you give birth, all of the hair that would have shed, does.

“Meghan may have opted for a scraped back bun to prevent her hair from further damage. It’s also a quick hairstyle and perfect for hot weather,” said Johnson. “If her hair was damaged during pregnancy, putting her hair up will prevent it from further damage.”

The American Academy of Dermatology says normal hair patters usually return about a year after giving birth. Nice job when Meghan Markle has traded her messy bun.

Twista Explains How Young Black Men Will Flourish Thanks To Marijuana Legalization

This year Illinois became the 11th state to legalize the recreational use and sale of marijuana, passing legislation that New York and New Jersey were predicted to achieve first. The bill goes into effect Jan. 1, 2020 and includes a social equity program that will expunge the past records of anyone convicted of marijuana possession charges for 30 grams or under.

Rapper Twista has established himself as a fixture in both Chicago and marijuana communities over the years. (He even has a strain named after him!) In a recent interview with VLAD TV, he recalled how the illegal classification of cannabis negatively impacted his life and how thrilled he was young people wouldn’t have to go through that.

“I remember so many days and so many problems going through legal drama because of smoking marijuana, smoking weed in the city, said Twista, who was arrested for misdemeanor possession charges back in 2016. “But just as much as you’re excited to smoke [legal marijuana], you want to see young people not to get in trouble such as smoking when we have alcohol, which is way worse than marijuana.”

Not only will legalization help young people stay out of trouble with the law, Twista also observed how it can revolutionize a successful mindset in young people. Those who might’ve been sucked into hustling or gang violence can “become entrepreneurs now,” instead of selling product on the street illegally.

“Once you legalize it, people shift their thinking a little bit, including their product and how they move it,” Twista said. “You’re going to see a lot of young, black men—young men, period—and young women flourish in this era of the legalization of marijuana. I’m looking forward to young people getting money.”

Emojis And Photo Filters Could Spoil Your Online Dating

0

Online dating is fun but also taxing. Finding success through these apps is more likely if you spend a good amount of time swiping and looking through your options — something that can be taken in as a fun game with drinks and friends, or as a habit that takes a serious toll on your sanity.

A recent study conducted by UK dating guru James Preece and Carphone Warehouse surveyed 1,000 people, finding some interesting coincidences, turn-ons and red flags.

Despite how personal and individual each person’s preferences and dating life is, there are a few generalizations that apply to most. Most people appreciate humor and wit on personal bios, drawing the line at crude or sexual jokes.

Photos on dating profiles are vital, being one of the few things there that can show off some honesty and personality. One full-length image has better odds of getting responses from people, while profiles that feature images of traveling or pets also have a tendency to attract positive results. Pollers believe that people with kids should be upfront about it, having more odds of success if they feature an image with them.

Emojis

On the other hand, profiles with no images are ignored by virtually everyone. “You could have 99 amazing photos, but if there’s a red flag in number 100, it’ll put people off,” says Preece.

Some common sense applies on all of this, with filters like dog ears and flower crowns having a poor effect on daters. Just don’t do it. Smoking, drinking and mirror selfies should also be avoided, with a large percentage of people finding them undesirable.

Finally, emojis, for as much as we love and use them, get a lot of hate on dating apps. 80% of people find them annoying when featured in bios, even if it’s just a smiley face or a sunflower. You’ll have to find more creative and singular ways of showing that you’re friendly.

Area 51 Memes Prove Government Can’t Take A Joke

It all started with a Facebook event where 1.5 million people RSVPd. The event in question was called “Storm Area 51, They Can’t Stop All of Us,” and it took advantage of the mythology that surrounds the area, which is presumed to be filled with a lot of weird and possibly galactic stuff.

This secretive military base located in southern Nevada has been the inspiration for millions of science fiction stories and movies. So, perfect stuff for memes. The event, created as some sort of meta joke, stated the plan of action: “We will all meet up at the Area 51 Alien Center tourist attraction and coordinate our entry. If we naruto run, we can move faster than their bullets. Lets see them aliens.”

With that Naruto inside joke that references the way in which the anime character runs, the organizers of the event targeted — or perhaps isolated — a large subset of people.

“Any attempt to illegally access the area is highly discouraged,” said an Air Force spokesperson to NPR, showing no apparent ability to detect sarcasm or humor.

Now that that’s cleared, let’s get to the memes! So popular were they that brands like Funyons and Burger King had to get involved and reap some “Likes”, signaling that maybe the meme was overstaying its welcome.

Wait, Khloe Kardashian’s ‘bad nose job’ look was just makeup contouring?

Via Celebitchy:

Khloe did a video with Vogue where she shows off her makeup/beauty routine, and the routine includes lots of “contouring” for her nose and jawline. The video also includes Khloe’s nose from different angles, and in this video, her nose does NOT look as jacked as it has in the past two months?

Was this filmed pre-nose job, or shall I say, before her latest nose job? Or have I spent the last two months calling out Khloe’s botched nose job when really it was just “contouring”? I really don’t know. Khloe says to camera:

[From People]

“So one of my favorite things is nose contour. But this does stress me out a little bit.” The reality star explained that it’s often hard for her to know whether the contour will look as good in a photograph as it does in person. “In person and how cameras reflect and light, everything looks different,” Kardashian said. “So sometimes I will contour my nose and in real life I think I look so good and then in some photos I look crazy!”

Besides her nose, the star also uses her M.A.C Cosmetics Contour Palette to contour her jawline, which she said makes her face look smaller.

“Especially after baby, when you have had a baby [and] you’re working on losing weight, and you’re still not losing that much weight. [In] your face you just feel so big. This I swear is like a magic eraser. I sit here and I’m just like, ‘Please go away! Come again another day. Please! Or just don’t come!’” Kardashian hilariously joked.

Beyonce Shares New Pics Of Her Meeting Meghan Markle

Via iHeart Radio:

On Thursday, Queen Bey shared photos and videos of her meeting the American royal and Prince Harry at the London premiere of the Lion King. As fans know, Bey, who plays the voice of Nala in the upcoming live-action remake, walked the red carpet on Sunday (July 14) with her husband Jay- Z. Following the red carpet, the two met the royal couple (and even chatted a bit) before heading into the premiere. During the encounter, Beyoncé addressed the Duchess of Sussex as “My Princess.” The mom of three also gushed over Meghan’s newborn son Archie, calling him “so beautiful.”

Ways To Brace Yourself For The Impending Heat Wave

A record breaking heat wave will be hitting the central and eastern areas of the U.S. this weekend, affecting over 115 million Americans and making for the hottest weather of the summer. “A large dome of high pressure will allow high temperatures to surge into the 90s and 100s in many locations, while heat indices will top 100 and approach 110 degrees or higher,” reports the National Weather Service.

With such high temperatures, it’s important to be prepared. Here are 5 tips that can help you stay more comfortable once the heat hits.

RELATED: 5 Tips For Working Out In The Heat This Summer

While homes make some of the best shelters from the heat, some cities and communities facilitate cooling centers for those who need the most attention, like children and seniors. Spaces like public libraries, malls, community and senior centers should expect more visits than usual and should have functioning AC units and cool rooms.

Prepare your home

In order to be as comfortable as possible, make sure to cover your windows with drapes and shades, especially if they’re thermal. You can also insulate your home by placing sealant strips on doors and windows, covering cracks and gaps that facilitate the entrance of outside heat. Ceiling fans are also very helpful, moving hot masses of air and keeping your home feeling fresh.

Know the signs of heat illness

If your outdoor activities can’t be postponed and you have to leave your house, at least wear proper clothing, which should be light-colored and loose. Accessorize with hats and visors that will shade and protect your face. It’s also important to avoid high energy activities and take advantage of the AC in your car or public transportation.

How To Make Your Edibles Taste Less Like Weed

In theory, marijuana edibles are a win-win prospect: you get to have your cake and eat weed, too. However, in practice, you often sacrifice the actual dessert experience. The weed flavor can be overpowering, and you’re still left wanting a delicious dessert that actually tastes good. It begets the question: is there a way to make cannabutter goodies taste less like weed, so that you can have a meaningful dessert experience and still get high?

What do the experts have to say?

To start, I hit up one of the commercial cannabis bakeries which I admire, Colorado’s Sweet Grass Kitchen. This pioneering commercial cannabis bakery has been in operation since 2009. They’re a big deal: their products are sold in over 500 dispensaries and over 2 million servings were dosed in just the past year (like whoa). Much of their success owes to a simple fact: their edibles, which include cookies, pies, brownies, and even some confections, taste good. Their snickerdoodles are satisfying as a cookie as well as an edible; their brownies don’t taste skunky or overly weed-y, but definitely deliver a satisfying dosage. So…what’s the secret?

RELATED: 5 Ways To Utilize Leftover Marijuana Pulp From Cannabutter

I got to pick the brains of Jesse Burns and Kristy Gustafson from their marketing department, as well as executive chef Lauren Finesilver. Now, before anything else, they wanted me to tell you that overall, they discourage home baking and note that professionally prepared edibles will provide the most reliable and safe dosing. 21+ consumers should be sure to seek out products which are clearly marked and tested for potency.

However, for those who are curious and want to go rogue like me, they do have some wisdom to impart.

As executive chef Lauren Finesilver simply says, “it’s all about the cannabutter”. Your cannabutter is the flavor core of your edibles, and therefore should be considered of key importance. There are a few reasons why.

First, using cannabutter is important to flavor, as opposed to using an oil, concentrate, or shatter. Second, what goes into the cannabutter matters: Sweet Grass Kitchen employs full flowers versus trim. Unmanicured flowers go into a large kettle and through a proprietary slow cooking process; using the more “premium” product yields and overall superior and better-tasting cannabutter.

RELATED: Cannabutter: A Beginner’s Guide To Making The Best Ever

Another helpful tip from Finesilver? Intelligence with flavor combination matters. For instance, Sweet Grass Kitchen offers a seasonal ginger molasses cookie in which you can barely taste weed at all because of the assertiveness of the ginger. Or framed another way, if you don’t like the taste of weed in your edibles, a recipe like shortbread isn’t going to offer a whole lot to cover up the flavor.

Tips for making cannabutter taste less like weed

These tips reflect some of the guiding words from Sweet Grass Kitchen as well as my own advice.

1. Use cannabutter versus hash oil or concentrate. Remember, cannabutter is made with butter, which is the not-so-secret ingredient that makes baked goods tender and delicious. As such, it’s a better choice overall than hash oil or concentrate.

2. Make cannabutter with full flowers versus trim. This was one of my favorite tips from Sweet Grass Kitchen. Anecdotally, I can tell you that using the full flower versus the trim is more expensive, but does yield a superior flavor. Sometimes you get a wood-y flavor element from trim that can give baked goods a slightly bitter aftertaste.

3. Use good butter and good weed. Ingredients matter! I personally suggest choosing a high quality unsalted butter, and using a good quality strain of marijuana. It might be more expensive, but it will give you better-tasting results.

4. Do a good job of straining. When making cannabutter, use a very fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth to strain the weed so that you don’t get any leaves or buds in your finished cannabutter.

5. Be intelligent with flavor pairings. Marijuana has, well, an herbal flavor. As such, baked goods with herbal or spicy flavors are ideal pairings, as it will work in harmony with the weed flavor. As noted above, Sweet Grass Kitchen offers a killer ginger molasses cookie which doesn’t taste of weed at all.

6. Brown your cannabutter before baking. This is my own tip to share: brown your cannabutter before baking. Have you ever heard of browned butter? It’s butter which has been heated, toasted over low heat until it turns slightly darker in color, and then cooled and used as regular butter in a recipe. Browning the butter gives it a nutty flavor which I think mellows out the weed flavor.

If You’re Worried About FaceApp, You Should Worry About All Social Media Apps

Thanks to FaceApp, there’s been a wave of surreal images swirling the internet. The app quickly went viral after everyone became enthralled with a specific filter that lets you see what you’ll look like as a senior citizen.

There’s a scary side to all of this fun stuff; FaceApp is owned by a Russian company, and once you accept their terms you grant them access to the images on your phone, which are then sent to servers that can keep them and manipulate them for an undetermined amount of time.

RELATED: Facebook Brags Its AI Can Differentiate Between Marijuana And Broccoli

FaceApp says that they delete most of their images from their servers within 48 hours. They also claim that while they’re originally from St. Petersburg, their base is located within the U.S., and that their data doesn’t travel overseas.

But FaceApp isn’t alone. Lots of apps, from the dime-store imposters to Facebook, pose similar privacy dangers. The good news is that they’re prompting conversations about data and internet privacy are just gaining traction, forcing us to rethink about the way we use social media and interact with people through the internet.

WIRED talked to Christine Bannan, consumer protection counsel at the nonprofit Electronic Privacy Information Center. She said people give photos to lots of different apps. “I think this is probably getting attention because it’s Russian developers. But this is definitely not a unique FaceApp problem. FaceApp is part of a larger privacy problem.”

RELATED: Facebook Is Rolling Out A New ‘Secret Crush’ Feature

If you’re scared of FaceApp and are considering using one of the hundreds of rip-offs available on the Apple and Google Play store, take a minute to analyze the problem. All apps with these capabilities have access to your library, and most of them don’t come from verified sources. Even apps that are worth billions of dollars and have revolutionized the world come with their own set of dubious privacy policies. There is no escape from all of this except perhaps to not participate in social media.

Legalizing Marijuana Seems To Lower Teen Interest In Weed

Long has it been assumed the alcohol and tobacco industries are opponents of widespread marijuana legalization. The reason is simple—the availability of legal cannabis can cut into their market shares. A new study supports the theory as interest in alcohol diminishes following marijuana legalization. But for reasons that remain unclear, tobacco sales have increased at the same time as alcohol sales drop.

Utilizing data collected from “a leading U.S.-based web portal,” researchers at University of Georgia’s Terry College of Business sought to better understand how marijuana legalization affects various markets. Online searches between January 2014 and April 2017 revealed how the behaviors of state residents changed in terms of what they clicked and searched following marijuana legalization, as Marijuana Moment first reported.

“It appears the alcohol industry has valid reason to be concerned about legal marijuana and may need creative strategies to avoid market decline if it passes,” said co-author and assistant professor at the University of Georgia Pengyuan Wang in a press release.

RELATED: State Legalization Doesn’t Increase Youth Cannabis Use, Meta-Study Says

Published in the INFORMS journal Marketing Science, the study revealed that online searches for alcohol dropped 11% post legalization, though tobacco products were searched almost 8% more. Perhaps most interesting is the behavior changes amongst generational divides. Adults increased their marijuana searches by 17% following recreational marijuana legalization, but youths aged 19 or younger slightly decreased online marijuana searches.

“Contrary to widely held public concern after recreational cannabis is legalized, teenagers appear to lose interest, rather than gain interest,” Wang said. “Policymakers only concerned with an uptick in teen users, may want to rethink their stance.”

This online data falls in line with a previous analysis conducted by Cowen and Co. around the changes of Canadian consumer behavior after the country legalized recreational marijuana. The number of Canadians who admitted to using marijuana in the past month jumped by 25% in some provinces. Meanwhile, Canadian beer sales dropped by 6.8% in the month of March alone.
