E-Cigarettes And A New Threat: How To Dispose Of Them

The two largest global brands of capsule coffee, Nespresso and Keurig, are regarded by many as environmental nightmares. Billions of the throwaway non-recyclable plastic products currently clutter waste dumps, waterways and city streets. Both inventor of the “K-cups” John Sylvan and former Nespresso CEO Jean-Paul Gaillard have publicly bemoaned the environmental consequences of the products they once championed. Sylvan has stated that the disposable (but not biodegradable) coffee capsule is “like a cigarette for coffee, a single-serve delivery mechanism for an addictive substance.”

The comparison between cigarette butts and capsule coffee is surprisingly fitting. Both butts and capsules are intentionally designed to be convenient, single-use products. Both are also non-biodegradable and un-recyclable. As pervasive and polluting as cigarette butts are, however, the e-waste from e-cigarettes presents an even more apt comparison.

As a postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education at the University of California, San Francisco with a background in environmental philosophy and public health, I became curious how the waste stream of e-cigarettes has passed completely outside the regulatory radar.

A smoking gun?

San Francisco’s Pax Labs, maker of the market-leading electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) Juul, thinks of its product as a “Nespresso machine, if Nespresso still made great coffee.” It also describes its e-cigarette as a “gun.”

The product has soared in popularity, particularly among teenagers, leading Dr. Scott Gottlieb, commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, in September 2018 to call Juul smoking among teens an epidemic.

While the health outcomes for e-cigarette vapor versus an inveterate capsule coffee drinker vary greatly, both “disruptive” products present lingering harms to the environment greater than the products they replace.

The legacy of cigarette butts imparts a dark story. An estimated two-thirds of cigarette butts are littered, clogging sewer drains, blighting city parks and contributing to estimated cleanup costs of US$11 billion yearly for U.S. litter alone. Cigarettes are environmentally irresponsible by design, and yet e-cigarettes pose an environmental threat of considerable proportions. Instead of merely being thrown away, these complex devices present simultaneously a biohazard risk with potential high quantities of leftover or residual nicotine and an environmental health threat as littered electronic waste.

Their endocrine-disrupting plastics, lithium ion batteries and electronic circuit boards require disassembly, sorting and proper further recycling and disposal. Their instructions do not say anything about disposal. Electronic waste (e-waste) already presents a daunting environmental quandary and is notoriously difficult to recycle. When littered, broken devices can leach metals, battery acid and nicotine into the local environment and urban landscape.

A preventable environmental health disaster

E-cigarettes remain controversial because of the inability to know whether they are a gateway to cigarette smoking. One thing is clear: They are an environmental threat. RedPixel.pl/Shutterstock.com

A main question public health regulators must face is: How are these new devices being disposed of? Are e-cigarettes being thrown away carelessly, like cigarette butts? Or disposed of in special electronic waste facilities, like smartphones? Preliminary results from litter pickups give mixed results. Juul pods are found routinely littered, especially where young people congregate. But because of the double-bind of e-cigarette waste being both electronic waste due to the components and hazardous waste due to the nicotine liquid residue, currently there is no legal way to recycle them in the U.S. The Office on Smoking and Health and the EPA need to coordinate their regulations to allow for the safe recycling and waste minimization of these products.

More than 58 million e-cigarette products were sold in the U.S. (not including those sold in vape shops or online) in 2015, 19.2 million of which were disposable e-cigarettes. A 2014 study found that none of the surveyed e-cigarette packages contained disposal instructions.

The major transnational tobacco companies so far primarily sell throwaway, one-use “closed” system products. Vuse and MarkTen, owned by Reynolds American and Altria, respectively, are two leading U.S. e-cigarettes, and both are closed systems. While these products may prevent nicotine poisoning in small children, their environmental health harms may be significantly larger due to their expendable design.

Most independent vaporizer manufacturers sell open, or reusable, systems, which are more popular with longer-term users and possibly more effective to quit than traditional cigarettes. In other markets, however, like the U.K. and Japan, transnational tobacco companies British American Tobacco (BAT) and Japan Tobacco International have begun to heavily market open systems.

BAT’s website on the disposal of their Vype e-cigarette warns “electrical waste and electronic equipment can contain hazardous substances which, if not treated properly, could lead to damage to the environment and human health.” So neither open nor closed systems are environmentally sustainable.

The World Health Organization, in its report Tobacco and Its Environmental Impact: An Overview, recently noted the “quieter but shockingly widespread impacts of tobacco from an environmental perspective.” Article 18 of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control states that all signatory parties “agree to have due regard to the protection of the environment and the health of persons in relation to the environment in respect of tobacco cultivation and manufacture within their respective territories.” It is time to close the loop and pay increased attention to tobacco product disposal as well.

As regulatory agencies continue deciding how to regulate e-cigarettes, not only should the immediate health effects and secondhand effects of the products be taken into account, but I believe the environmental effects of these products should be too.

The mounting environmental impact of the single-use non-recyclable coffee fad has left coffee capsule Keurig inventor John Sylvan regretting his invention. Will apocryphal e-cigarette inventor Hon Lik ever have a similar reckoning regarding the mountains of e-cigarette e-waste? Let’s hope it never gets to that point. The Conversation

This Utah Senator Filmed Himself Trying Marijuana The First Time

Don’t knock it until you try it. Utah state senator Jim Dabakis challenged his fellow politicians with that attitude as the state prepares to vote on legalizing medicinal marijuana in the coming weeks. To put his money where his mouth is, Dabakis traveled to Nevada, where marijuana is recreationally legal, to film himself trying marijuana.

According to local news station KUTV, Dabakis is known for his political publicity stunts. The senator supports Prop 2, which would legalize medicinal marijuana in Utah, and wants his fellow legislators to know it’s “not a big deal.”

In a Facebook Live video posted over the weekend, Dabakis pops a gummy edible, noting his “sacrifice for you, the taxpayers.”

“I wouldn’t recommend it as a sheer candy because it’s a little bit bitter,” he says while chewing. Dabakis also assures viewers his stunt is a responsible one—he already has a driver secured and plans to lay by the pool while the edible kicks in.

“It dawned on me Wednesday on the floor of the Senate that the Legislature is going to have the final say on this medical marijuana,” Dabakis told KUTV, explaining why he went through with the stunt. “I thought, ‘Maybe nobody on this floor has ever tried marijuana.’”

“I think if the legislature would actually try it they would find it and realize this is no big deal, and at least let those who are suffering have the help that they need,” he added.

Regardless of the vote next month medical marijuana appears assured in Utah, thanks to a deal struck between leaders of the Mormon Church, marijuana advocates, and Gov. Gary Herbert. Dabakis is correct, though, about legislators having the final say. Whether the medical marijuana program is more restrictive or accessible will be determined by state legislators after the fact.

And in a followup Facebook video, Dabakis told his colleagues to “mellow out” on cannabis.

“I think the reefer madness crowd—you guys, you need to try it. It’s not that big a deal.”

Canadians Unhappy With Excessive Plastic Marijuana Packaging

In an astounding find by Canada’s first retail customers, for every gram of cannabis sold there is in excess of as much as 70 grams of packaging. That’s a lot of lasting waste, and without a solid recycling program put in place, it’s already turning some consumers off.

Moncton resident Remi Robichaud said,”It’s really shameful. Being a coastal province, they should do something about the amount of plastic that goes into our ocean.” Which is a very real concern. A friend of Robichaud weighed the packaging that came with one gram of cannabis on a food scale and it came out to 70 grams between the plastic, foil and other packaging.

And it’s not a Moncton phenomenon. In Nova Scotia, Greg Mac, who has a YouTube Channel “Greg Mac Reviews Whatever,” put up a picture of all the packaging that came with his cannabis, with the caption, “This is how much packaging / Waste for just 4 grams of weed from the Nova Scotia Liquor Commision.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/BpCcEE1Hndv

Previously Mac had been getting his cannabis at medical dispensaries and said that the product simply came in a plastic zippered bag, which was just fine for him. But is there any sort of method to this packaging madness?

Health Canada’s website states that cannabis ought to, “be packaged in an immediate container that is tamper-evident, child-resistant, prevents contamination and keeps cannabis dry.” It goes on to say, “Regulations would require that the immediate container be opaque or translucent. Products could have both an inner and outer package, but every package would need to be labelled in accordance with the proposed requirements.”

Robichaud and Mac both agree that glass jars, which are reusable and useful, should be considered as an option, especially with the world seemingly banding together to make the planet healthier for wild and sealife, not to mention us humans and our descendants. Bans on plastic items are already taking effect, including an impending ban on plastic straws.

Cannabis is supposed to be the green option all the way around. Its roots breed better soil, its properties lend medicine without the burden of side effects, organic cannabis is practically the norm now and it’s already high time that the way it’s delivered gets with the fledgling post-excessive-waste era.

Jamie Lee Curtis Defends Halloween Marijuana Scene

She is known as an icon in the horror genre and the Scream Queen. Now, Jamie Lee Curtis defends Halloween marijuana scene. There are a litany of rules for surviving horror movies. Blog posts around the internet dedicate themselves to deciphering what not to do if you have any chance of surviving a masked killer or extraterrestrial being. Intuitively you know what these are. Whenever you watch a character announce, “I’ll be right back,” or roll around in the sheets, you assume their time is ending shortly.

In John Carpenter’s iconic slasher Halloween, babysitter Laurie Strode breaks one of those cardinal rules—don’t do drugs or drink alcohol. Played by Scream Queen Jamie Lee Curtis, Laurie shares a few puffs from a joint riding around town with her friend Nancy. Though Nancy pays the price for her horror movie misdeeds, Laurie does not.

Curtis reprises her role as Laurie in the Halloween reboot, which is in theaters now. While promoting the movie, the actress discussed the origins of her character and she “was the archetype that had to be the center of that story, which is an innocent girl, without boyfriends, without experience.”

According to Curtis, the original Halloween movie is about the innocence of babysitting—where parents entrust their children’s lives to someone who’s basically their peers—perverted by this unadulterated evil in the form of Michael Myers.

“She’s the good girl, even though she did smoke pot, which is such an anomaly for a good girl,” Curtis said. “But the way she smokes it, you can see she’s not experienced. She coughs and she sort of blows it.”

That lack of inexperience, that innocence is ultimately what redeems Laurie to survive against Michael Myers. So if you ever find yourself in a horror movie, remember—don’t inhale. It might save your life.

David Schwimmer Swears He’s Not The Same Dude Wanted By British Police

It started out as a serious question on Facebook. Police in the English seaside town of Blackpool wanted the public’s help in tracking down a thief who stole a jacket, wallet and phone from a local restaurant.

But things took a turn when the public got a visual of the suspect in question — security footage of the guy buying beer from a nearby convenience store. This dude look familiar to you?

If you’re thinking to yourself, “That guy looks just like Ross from Friends!” you are not alone. If you have a few minutes to spare,  just wade through the comments, which include:

im suprised youve not found him…..its like your always stuck in second gear…

I don’t think it’s been this guy’s day, his week, his month or even his year…..?

Was he on a break?

I was going to read the report for this but it was 18 pages… FRONT AND BACK! It rambled on for so long that I fell aslEEP

Shoplifting…It’s NOT that common. It DOESN’T happen to every guy, and it IS A BIG DEAL !!!

That’s clearly not Ross. They’re as different as night and… later that night.

Approach this man with care, especially if someone has just taken his leftover turkey sandwich with a moist maker

Hope he didn’t forget his ‘salmon skin roll’

Only way this can end is with a Scooby Do ending, where they pull off the Ross Mask and its Gunther

Others acknowledged it was a serious crime, you guys:

Guys this is serious…it was a robbery based on giving and receiving as well as having and sharing. And the stolen items that they give and have is shared and received. And through this having and giving and sharing and receiving, we too can share and love and have… and receive.

Scotland officers even joined in on the fun. Wrote the Dumfries Police:

If you see him keep away. He is known to have studied Karate and we believe he has mastered the art of Unagi, the state of total awareness.

Of course, it was only a matter of time before the real  Ross Geller (aka David Schwimmer) heard about his doppelganger and posted a response proving his innocence:

https://twitter.com/DavidSchwimmer/status/1055123896909864966

Blackpool Police unanimously agree that Ross from Friends is not the culprit:

Thank you to everyone for your speedy responses. We have investigated this matter thoroughly and have confirmed that David Schwimmer was in America on this date. We’re so sorry it has to be this way.

Evil Ross is still on the loose. If you have any genuine info, Blackpool Police are there for you. Like they’ve been there before.

(If you’re not a Friends fan, apologies for an entire story which must make absolutely no sense.)

Why Marijuana Advocates Believe This Is The Year It Could All Come Together

The word on the street is 2019 could be the year that all of the pieces fall into place for nationwide marijuana legalization. Public opinion on the issue of legal weed is at an all-time high, and the Democrats, which have shown the most support for furthering the movement, stand a better than average chance of gaining back control of the U.S. House of Representatives following the November election. Toss in the fact that several more states are expected to legalize for medicinal and recreational use when voters head to the ballot box in another week, and there is perhaps a perfect storm brewing in the nation’s capital that could lead to the end of pot prohibition.

“The train has left the station,” U.S. Representative Earl Blumenauer of Oregon, one of the founders of a small advocacy group called the Congressional Cannabis Caucus, told NBC News. “I see all the pieces coming together… It’s the same arc we saw two generations ago with the prohibitions of alcohol.”

It has been said that once public opinion on marijuana legalization consistently resides in the 60-65 percent range, Congress will have no choice but to consider the matter. This has happened now for the past few years. The latest Gallup poll finds that 66 percent of the population is in favor of marijuana being taxed and regulated in a manner similar to alcohol and tobacco.

And when it comes to politicians tendering their support, the majority of Democrats (74 percent) and Republicans (53 percent) are onboard. In a situation where the Democrats dominate in Congress, there is a solid chance that we could see more marijuana-related measures getting approved in the next legislative session. Considering this possibility, Representative Blumenauer recently filed his “Blueprint to Legalize Marijuana” with Democratic leadership in hopes of pursuing an end to marijuana prohibition when everyone returns from the holiday break.

Meanwhile, marijuana legalization is picking up serious momentum at the state level. It has been less than ten years since Colorado and Washington became the first in the nation to legalize for recreational use. Since then, seven other states and the District of Columbia have done the same. And more states are following. Next month, Michigan is expected to become the first state in the Midwest to make weed legal for adults 21 and over. North Dakota is poised to make it entirely legal, as well.

Some states are on the verge of winning their lengthy battle to legalize comprehensive medical marijuana programs. Utah voters will decide on this issue next month, as will voters in Missouri.

But when it comes to ending marijuana prohibition at the national level, the party controlling the U.S. House only goes so far. Congressional leadership in both chambers goes a long way in pushing issues forward. The primary obstruction will be the Senate, which is led by Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. Although he has been struggling to legalize hemp nationwide (still unsuccessful), the lawmaker has no interest in legalizing marijuana. But Blumenauer believes that if the Democrats build on the momentum the marijuana debate has gained over the years, they can change his mind.

Whether the concept of legal marijuana in the United States has a fighting chance really depends on the outcome of the election next month. Democrats must win back the House, and right now that is not a guarantee. A recent poll by the Washington Post found that 50 percent of the voters support Democrats, while 47 percent favor Republicans in filling the contested House seats.

It’s going to be a close one.

Why Having Sex With Your Ex Might Be Good For You

0

If you’re starting to feel the impending pangs of being alone during the holiday season, 1) you’re certainly not alone and 2) science says having a fling with your ex might not be the worst decision you’ve ever made.

Despite conventional wisdom that tries to convince us that having sex with an ex will only lead to heartache, new research finds it doesn’t do any harm, at least where “moving on” is concerned, according to a study published in the  journal Archives of Sexual Behavior. This is true even for those who continue to pine for their ex, says lead author Stephanie Spielmann of Wayne State University.

After studying nearly 500 participants, researchers found that “pursuing sex with an ex did not seem to stand in the way of people’s subsequent recovery from a breakup on a daily basis or over the course of two months.”

Most participants who pursued sex did end up in bed with their ex, but this did not influence how someone managed to get over the end of their relationship. Those pining after their ex-partner more often sought out sexual activity, potentially as a way of fostering closeness and connection.

However, reveals the study, this didn’t leave them distressed or feeling depressed. In fact, it left them feeling more positive in everyday life.

Says Spielmann, “This research suggests that societal handwringing regarding trying to have sex with an ex may not be warranted. The fact that sex with an ex is found to be most eagerly pursued by those having difficulty moving on, suggests that we should perhaps instead more critically evaluate people’s motivations behind pursuing sex with an ex.”

Spielmann says the findings highlight the various ways people get over a breakup and believes it’s an important subject to research because of the consequences it could have on someone’s mental health, how distressed they remain, and whether they are able to move on.

Is Marijuana Already Mainstream For Businesses?

As cannabis is being infused into mainstream beverages, beauty products, sunscreens, every kind of food imaginable and is now legal in Canada and the majority of the U.S., it seems consumers may have already normalized what was stigmatized not long ago.

Recently, a majority of respondents to a survey put out by the Chicago consulting firm, A.T. Kearney, said that their overall perception of mainstream companies wouldn’t change if said businesses became affiliated with cannabis. That means for most they wouldn’t get all that more hyped about them or snub them, just continue with consumerism per usual.

About a quarter of the respondents, however, said their impression of a company that aligned themselves with pot would actually improve. “This really speaks to the mainstreaming of cannabis, which, for the overall industry, I think is a positive thing,” Nancy Whiteman, CEO of Boulder, Colorado edibles maker Wana Brands said to MJBizDaily.com.

In a strange twist of irony, the industry that most people don’t want to see associated with cannabis is the alcohol industry. Perhaps it’s the layering of substances that seems sketchy, perhaps people just like their spirits unadulterated, but whatever the reason, 18 percent of respondents said adding cannabis would leave a bad taste in their mouths.

With the bigger companies coming in with big money guns blazing and branding that’s been established for quite some time, what about the cannabis brands that have worked so hard to get the corners of the market that they occupy?

“Innovation is the key in any industry,” Whiteman said. “Innovate or die, and I think companies in this industry understand innovation at a different level. They know what’s effective and what’s not effective.” Especially those who’ve been ingrained in the movement and have watched carefully what works and what doesn’t.

Another option that has a quieter, sadder ring to it is for the smaller companies to be absorbed by the giants who need the real knowledge they’ve amassed. Some will go for the big payout, some will innovate until they stand alone and some will become big brands themselves.

As to the question if cannabis is mainstream yet for business, look to our Northern neighbors, look at Coca-Cola and Constellation Brands’ plans for infused beverages, look at all the CBD brands going, well, mainstream and simply look around; it was built and they came.
