Study: Young People Are The Loneliest Of All The Age Groups

A large survey conducted by the BBC claims that people who report feeling the loneliest are not seniors as one would expect, but young adults between the ages of 16 and 24.

The survey was conducted by interviewing more than 55,000 people and reports that 40 percent of participants between the ages of 16 and 24 claim to feel very lonely. In addition, 27 percent of people over the age of 75 also reported similar feelings of loneliness.

According to psychologists and experts on the matter, loneliness has little to do with being alone and is associated more with a feeling of being left out. It has also been discovered that social media has an effect on people’s mental health, increasing feelings of anxiety, depression, and loneliness. Since younger generations are interacting with technology from a younger age, it makes sense that they’re affected the most by their screens.

Even though technology has an effect that can’t be disregarded, the BBC reports that older generations also felt particularly lonely when they were in their teens and early twenties. Mashable reports that young people feel loneliness more intensely because they are ill-equipped to manage these emotions, lacking the experience that lets them know that these feelings are temporary.

“Living much of your life on social media means that you can be extremely well connected, but still feel lonely, especially if you can’t relate to the apparently ‘perfect’ lives that other people are presenting,” says expert Matt Blow, making it clear that while social media is not the source of loneliness in youths, it certainly contributes to the problem.

Moms Confuse Ohio State’s Helmet Stickers With Marijuana

The Ohio State Buckeyes have been a college football team for more than a hundred years. Anyone who barely watches football is aware of their existence. They are easily one of the biggest brand names in college sports that we have.

You would think, because of this, most people would also be aware that Ohio State decorates their helmets with buckeye stickers. It’s a 50-year plus tradition, where players are rewarded for big plays by receiving a sticker. If the athlete is an exceptional player, his whole helmet is usually adorned with these stickers.

But guess what. A whole lot of moms think those stickers actually resemble marijuana, as SB Nation pointed out. In Ohio State’s nationally-televised game against Penn State this past weekend, Twitter users kept posting about their Moms and marijuana leaves.

But this isn’t a new trend, it turns out. SB Nation documented that tweets stretch back to 2010 of moms mistaking the buckeye leaves for pot stickers. And if this is something people have been posting about since then, it’s pretty easy to reason people have been saying it privately before 2010.

Moms of the world: We love you, but no Ohio State doesn’t have marijuana leaves on their helmets. The state of Ohio just legalized medical marijuana two years ago. Though we have to admit: the marijuana heads sound like a dope football team name.

Legal Adult-Use Marijuana In Michigan Looks Promising

When Michigan voters hit the polls in a little over a month, chances are they will approve an initiative designed to legalized marijuana for recreational use. A recent survey conducted by the Detroit Free Press finds that the majority of the state’s citizens are fully prepared to embrace the concept of a taxed and regulated pot market that allows adults 21 and older to purchase weed from a dispensary in a manner similar to beer.

The latest poll, which consisted of 600 active and possible voters, shows 55 percent intend to support marijuana legalization, while 41 percent are still opposed. So far, only 3 percent are undecided on the issue.

If these numbers are an accurate representation of how the election will unfold in November, Michigan is on the verge of becoming the first state in the Midwest to follow in the footsteps of states like Colorado and California by legalizing for recreational use. Then, things could get interesting.

Proposal 1, as it is will be referred to on the ballot, would give adults 21 and older the freedom to possess up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana from a retail dispensary and keep up to 10 ounces at home. It would also provide them with the ability to cultivate up to 12 cannabis plants for personal use. The measure would subject retail weed to the state’s 6 percent sales tax and a 10 percent excise tax. It also permits local governments to decide whether or not marijuana businesses would be allowed to open in their neck of the wood.

Although the proposal is showing strong enough support for a win, the numbers are down in some parts of the state.

Another survey conducted back in March showed 61 percent in favor of Proposal 1. As it stands, the initiative is widely received in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties, while the northern portions of the state seem to be less enthused.

Some believe the difference could have something to do with how the question of legal pot was presented. The first poll gave it to the respondents straight, “should marijuana be taxed and legalized for adults 21 and older?” The most recent attempt, however, included the full ballot language, which may have included some less favorable details.

Cannabis supporters, like the Coalition to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol (CRMLA), which is leading the charge behind this initiative, says the decline in support does not come as a surprise. But the organization plans “to continue to work hard and dispel the misinformation and scare tactics that the opposition continues to put out there,” said CRMLA spokesman Josh Hovey.

“Prohibition doesn’t work and we’re wasting millions to continue to enforce this law and arrest and incarcerate people,” he added.

Opposing forces are of the opinion that Michigan’s race for legal weed could be much tighter than the polls show. Still, legal marijuana has gained a tremendous amount of support from nearly every demographic other than people over 65. The consensus is that as long as younger people show up to the polls, the measure will pass without issue.

If Michigan legalizes marijuana, we could see legislative forces in the neighboring states of Illinois and Indiana finally get serious about the cannabis discussion. If not, they could have an enforcement issue on their hands.

Want To Build Muscle? Your Workouts Should Only Take This Long

0

It may sound counterintuitive, but if getting stronger is your end game at the gym, you don’t need to be there any longer than it takes you to listen to a few of your favorite songs.

To prove this point, a team of researchers put 34 fit men on one of three fitness routines. One group did just one set of a specific exercise for a total of 13 minutes. Another did three sets for a total of 40 minutes. And a final group spent 70 minutes doing five sets per exercise.

The results, recently published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, make us want to drop our weights in shame. (Cue treadmill coming to a complete halt and us falling off.)

According to Cosmo:

Although everyone performed the same seven exercises, like leg and chest presses, using weights heavy enough to exhaust their muscles after eight to 12 reps three times a week for eight weeks, the first group did just one set of each move while the second repeated the routine three times per session, and the third completed the entire workout five times during each gym visit.

At the end of eight weeks, researchers found little difference in strength gains. In fact, those who spent just 13 minutes in the gym gained as much strength as those who did five times the amount of lifting. However, those who did more than just one set of each exercise packed on some size. The more reps it seems, the larger the muscles.

It’s safe to say that lots of people, especially men, go to the gym to build muscle mass. And if that’s your goal, do more sets. But if you just want to work on your fitness and get stronger, you don’t have to kill yourself with lots of reps. A single set and 13 minutes in the gym will support your athletic goals.

But as the study’s lead author, Brad Schoenfeld, tellsThe New York Times, even if you’re not looking to bulk up, you’ll need to strain the muscles “to limp exhaustion.” And yes, that means exactly what you think it means. After you’re done with your set, you should feel like you can’t possibly do anymore.

Schoenfeld says more research is needed to come to a complete conclusion regarding the study’s findings, but says “it looks like 13 minutes in the gym can lead to significant improvements” in strength.

So there you go. Now you have zero excuse not to go to the gym. “I don’t have time” is no longer an excuse.

What The Heck Is Trichotillomania And Can Cannabis Help?

0

Trichotillomania is an irresistible urge to to pull out one’s hair, usually from the scalp, eyebrows, and eyelashes. It is an impulse control disorder related to obsessive compulsive disease that can leave patients with patchy bald spots — which can be a source of embarrassment that, of course, leads to even more compulsive pulling.

Some people pull their hair with great focus and determination, often as a means of controlling or dissipating anxiety, while others simply pluck in a desultory, unselfconscious way. People with trichotillomania may also be inclined to skin picking (excoriation) or nail biting (onychophagy).

Like most psychological conditions, trichotillomania arises from a complex combination of genetic and environmental factors.

Like most psychological conditions, trichotillomania arises from a complex combination of genetic and environmental factors. It’s possible that cannabis can help at both ends.

To the degree that marijuana can ease anxiety, it can give relief to sufferers of trichotillomania. But it’s not an absolute good: Anecdotally, casual hair pullers can lose track of time while high and end up on hours’ long plucking jags. On the other hand, as we know (just guessing!), weed can also temporarily induce paranoia, and that can also intensify hair pulling.

When it comes to neurochemistry, there is some evidence suggesting that trichotillomania is linked with the overproduction of the neurotransmitter glutamate—and THC can have a moderating affect there. A study from 2011 found that THC “demonstrated statistically significant reductions in trichotillomania symptoms, in the absence of negative cognitive effects.”

If you want to know more about trichtillomania, this review of the medical literature is a good place to start.

The Only Cocktail You Need This Fall: Walnut Old Fashioned

When the leaves start falling and a chill hits the air, it’s time to hunker down with a warm, cozy, soothing drink. Or, a really effing amazing iced cocktail. Enter the Walnut Old Fashioned.

For this, we turn to the lovely Anu Elford. She co-owns Rob Roy — easily one of the best cocktail bars in Seattle — along with award winning tiki bar Navy Strength, recently named Best New Bar in America, and its sibling beer bar No Anchor, with her husband Chris. She’s also a big fan of cold weather cocktails:

I always think of apples and roasted nuts alongside drinks that you can take your time with in the fall. The Walnut Old Fashioned has always been one of my favorite Rob Roy drinks. It makes an appearance on the Cocktail Advent Calendar, but I start ordering them right about this time of year.

According to Anu, one of the first definitions found for a cocktail states that it should contain sugar, water, bitters, and a spirit. “This is the basis for an Old Fashioned, typically made with whiskey, bitters, sugar, and water (in the form of ice and dilution), but there are accounts of many old cocktails being made with brandy,” she says.

“Basically, whatever was around and available was used. At Rob Roy we make Old Fashioneds using any aged spirit of choice — tequila, scotch, rum, etc.  So although whiskey, particularly Bourbon, is the most common way to make an Old Fashioned, any aged spirit can be used.”

(Watch Anu make a classic Old Fashioned at Rob Roy)

Here now is Anu’s recipe for one of her all-time favorite drinks using apple brandy (calvados).

Walnut Old Fashioned

  • 2 oz. calvados
  • 1/4 oz. walnut liqueur (I use Haus Alpenz)
  • 1/4 oz. demerara syrup (2:1)
  • 3 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Tools: mixing glass, bar spoon, large cube of ice
  • Glass: Old Fashioned
  • Garnish: lemon twist

The easiest way to make the drink is to first place a large ice cube into the glass, add all other ingredients, and stir for about 10 seconds to get it nice and cold with some dilution.

Skull-Like Asteroid Will Zip Past Earth Shortly After Halloween

0

An asteroid with the shape of a skull that was first seen on Halloween 2015 is making another appearance on Veterans Day, November 11.  Officially named TB145 but dubbed the Great Pumpkin for obvious reasons, this asteroid will fly past Earth by a distance of 25 million miles.

The asteroid is thought to be an extinct comet (the rocky remains of a comet that was stripped of its icy bits) and is considered as potentially hazardous because of its size and proximity to Earth. Despite this information, astronomers are not concerned with the asteroid because of its trajectory, which they have already mapped in advance. The last time it zoomed past Earth, it came at a much closer distance of 300,000 miles — still too small to be seen without a telescope.

According to NBC News, the next close encounter that the asteroid will have to Earth will be in 2088, where it’ll come within a distance of 5.4 million miles. Sadly, there will be no added space-spookiness on this or the following years’ Halloween dates.

CannaMamas Support Smoking Cannabis While Pregnant

0

“Our movement is not to support just willy-nilly recreational cannabis consumption throughout pregnancy. It’s here to help women make a choice that they feel is safer than pharmaceuticals and over-the-counter medications,” said Jeanna Houch, founder of CannaMama, a collective composed of over 5,000 mamas who advocate the use of cannabis during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Houch and two other CannaMamas spoke with Denver’s Fox 31 News about their decisions and steadfast support of each other and other mothers who are either considering cannabis for symptoms of pregnancy or who are doing so privately.

Naturally, smoking anything while pregnant is considered a no-no in most medical circles, but these are women who are having trouble keeping any food down at all, making edibles an impossibility. The anecdotal evidence that CannaMamas are bringing to the table is that smoking pot while pregnant eases morning sickness and other appetite problems that can crop up with pregnancy.

CannaMamas is an online community that considers themselves a movement. They want to spread awareness that the stigma behind smoking while pregnant is unfounded. Though none of their evidence is yet scientific, the mamas have expressed their desire to be part of clinical trials. Of course, it’s a very controversial idea.

Fertility specialist at Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center, Dr. Althea O’Shaughnessy, told Fox 31 that, “Animal studies and some human studies have shown that marijuana has adverse affects on neurological development. Kids who were born from mothers who consume marijuana have some developmental issues that point to the fact that the marijuana may have been implicated in causing these issues.”

The women behind CannaMamas, however, say not so with their children, pointing to academic and personal achievements of the kids born with cannabis in their systems and who then breastfed while mom was still smoking cannabis.

“Cruel [individuals] often call us selfish, tell us we’re harming our children,” Houch said. “They don’t even take the time to listen to our stories. Cannabis is not crack. Cannabis is not heroin. Cannabis is not alcohol.”

The CannaMamas hope the next set of people to hear their stories will be legislators with open minds and hearts to their controversial cause.

How A Random Smoke Session Saved A Woman’s Life

0

Americans tend to fetishize England’s phone boxes. Those red contraptions that house pay phones is a favorite photo opportunity for any foreigner visiting the country. But like pay phones in the United States, a phone box has lost its cultural importance as a necessary day-to-day tool. Well here is a story about how a random smoke session saved a women’s life.

This is what caused someone on London’s Reddit board to question when was the last time anyone had used a phone box. Some spoke of desperately using a phone box after their cell phone had died while others used to step into the box to make prank calls. But one Redditor told the story of when he passed a ringing phone box and a woman asked him if he liked to smoke weed.

As Repugnice tells it:

I went to her flat which was only a street away. She opened the door and let me in. We smoked weed and chatted until the early hours of the morning before falling asleep.

She was an attractive Italian lady in her late forties but we didn’t have sex or anything like that. It wasn’t that kind of vibe. We just talked.

From his point of view, it was obvious the woman was in a difficult place. Her son had just been in a fatal car crash, and the woman was discussing suicidal thoughts. Amidst their smoke session, the man “held her and talked her out of ending her own life.”

The two stayed in touch over the years, sharing a drink or smoke together, until the woman reconnected with an ex-boyfriend in Italy, whom she eventually married. The Redditor was invited to wedding but had to cancel due to work obligations.

You may be wondering why answer the phone, why enter a random woman’s flat who was offering you weed. Well, Repugnice responded to another Reddit user who asked such questions. He was working construction at the time. After locking up, he was headed to the pub when the phone rang.

Repugnice via Reddit:

It did cross my mind that it might be as scam and that I was very stupid to be going to some random persons flat in the middle of the night but it was such a bizarre scenario that curiosity got the better of me.

Thankfully he did. His random, “bizarre” smoke session with this woman likely saved her life. You can read the full thread here.
