What To Know About Chemotherapy And Cannabis

Nausea, lack of energy, taste, aches – chemotherapy is tough – but medical marijuana can help.

Even the hesitant becomes curious about medical marijuana when dealing with chemotherapy.  Studies have shown medical marijuana in the right dose can help relieve some of the side effects of chemotherapy. Nearly 25% of cancer patients receive chemotherapy during a given year.   And the exhaustion is real and could last months even when the treatments are over.

Data demonstrates you can take cannabis with chemo and radiation, but it is wise to have a conversation with your oncologists as you consider blending it in to your regimen. Cancer is a life-threatening illness which knows no boundaries.  The medical community is now open and researching on how to use the benefits of medical marijuana for healing parts of cancer.  Here is what to know about chemotherapy and cannabis.

During chemotherapy, cancer patients experience a range of side effects. If you’re on a strong chemo regimen, usually the day after is when you’ll experience the worst symptoms and symptoms range from dizziness to nausea and vomiting. Patients need chemotherapy because it is a powerful treatment that kills the body’s growing cancerous cells, however, these side effects often make it a gruesome experience.

Aside from the fact that cannabis helps to mitigate some of the symptoms associated with chemotherapy, it also plays a supportive role in helping the body fight back cancerous cell growth when they get into chemotherapy and radiation.

One of the earliest side effects of chemotherapy is feeling nauseous, which is a disrupting factor for cancer patients. Many patients undergoing chemo complain of feeling excessively tired, headaches, high body temperatures and so on. By incorporating cannabis with chemotherapy you can significantly reduce the bulk of these side effects.

Like most medications, medical marijuana works over a period of tine with the right dosage. Taking it once doesn’t always provide the greatest benefits immediately.

A key benefit is it helps with a patients appetite, which is important for body maintenance. Patients complain after chemo they couldn’t eat or feel hungry.  With cannabis, often the appetite returns with an increased craving for food and an urge to snack more.

Another side effect of chemotherapy is exhaustion. Coupled with feeling overwhelmed by the process they end up mental and physical challenged to move forward.  A sativa “wakes” the body up and helps through the difficult times. CBD and THC posess properties that can keep patients alert and active throughout the chemo treatment process.

Another side effect can be insomnia, despite the exhaustion, they struggle to have a decent sleep. Since chemo patients are given steroids beforehand to help with the side effects, the majority also experience insomnia. Combining cannabis can help patients feel well-rested throughout the day, thus making it easier to sleep.

You may feel exhausted when combining cannabis or any other medication with chemotherapy. It can be an overwhelming experience if it isn’t done right. Here are some pointers to help you derive the best from using cannabis:

  • Always start low and go slow: don’t take so much cannabis at the same time.
  • Always consult your doctor or oncologist if you feel like you need to take more or lessen your dosage
  • Avoid using too many products simultaneously: sometimes, you may not get the best out of cannabis because you are taking too much medicine.
  • Cannabis is very safe when used with a doctor’s guidance.

Patients are often concerned about the “method of application” of cannabis when they are in chemo: they wonder if they should smoke it, chew it or consume it via other means.  The easiest is through a tincture or oil. Under the tongue and it acts quickly without having to put stress or the lungs and it doesn’t have to be swallowed if there is nausea.  If there is no nausea a gummy or maybe a cannabis beverage can be absorbed, but it may take time.  The last way to consume is either through a vape or smoking.  It is important to discuss this method with your health professional to avoid aggravation of the respiratory system.

Does Kevin Bacon Use Weed

He is the ideal rebel for a generation – but does Kevin Bacon use weed?

He is a symbol of rebel – his defining roll in the movie Footloose set a music and rebel tone for a generation. The classic movie is about one teen’s desire to dance changed the mindset of a small town. When it premiered, marijuana was not legal anywhere in North America. The movie was filmed at Payson High School in Utah, and now Bacon is returning for the school’s prom on the 40th anniversary of the premier.  And boy, have things changed.  In 2018, Utah approved and started legal medical marijuana, a first step toward recreational. So now patients in Payson can dance and consume.

Bacon’s career continued in such diverse vehicles as Frost/Nixon, X-Men: First Class, Crazy Stupid, Love, and I Love Dick Six Degrees.  There is even a fun game/meme of Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon where players try to connect actors or people to others within 6 connections – and the less connections the better.  After all this, does Kevin Bacon use weed and chill?

The 80s classic move Diner

Well, the answer is Bacon cuts loose and enjoys the plant. He is very open about it and in fact shared. “Different people react differently to it,” Bacon said. “I’m okay as long as I’m in a super, super safe kind of situation … I need to be like in bed, or something’s on. Like work, never, never, never … otherwise I can get a little paranoid.”

But sometimes, things happen. Kevin Bacon revealed to Seth Meyers he got high on marijuana with co-star Daniel Stern before filming a scene for the 80’s hit Diner. Thinking they had the day off, he and Stern head to a movie theatre to chill and watch a film.  Partially through the movie, he got called to return to the set.  Stern was not need and laughing is head off.

“I was fine. It turned out that the scene was just me walking in the background or something like that. Plus the adrenaline just straightened me right up,” Bacon said.

Krya Sedgwick, Bacon’s wife,  shared to prep for a role, she got stoned with him. Marijuana is a great material aid, maybe it is one of the reasons the Hollywood couple has been together for 35 years. They starred in numerous movies together including Space Oddity which Sedgwick and Bacon starred.

It is great Bacon has kept up the fight to open people’s minds about new things.

Has Kamala Harris Changed Her Stance On Marijuana Or

After a long history of blocking legal marijuana, VP Harris now seems to be pushing rescheduling, is it for real or is it another campaign promise.

Vice President Kamala Harris made the news about her supporting the need for rescheduling. Marijuana stocks jumped while the industry holds its breath. Harris was speaking at a meeting at the White House with people who received pardons from marijuana-related offices from the President. Joseph Cartagena aka the Rapper Fat Joe and Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (D) were among the crowd.  But has Kamala Harris changed her stance on Marijuana or is this another campaign promise which will take years to follow through.

As a San Francisco prosecutor, Harris oversaw more than 1,900 cannabis related convictions, higher than her predecessors. When it was a key issue about the state voting for legal marijuana, Harris opted out of the discussion.  It wasn’t until 2020 with the presidential campaign she appeared to change her mind and followed Biden’s lead in promising the cannabis industry a friend in power.  But it would be 3.5 years before any real action took place.

In 2020, the cannabis economy was just gaining major steam, but now with federal resistance, chaos in New York and California and flower price compression, it is critical something change.  Marijuana isa Schedule 1 drug as ruled by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). The classification designates the plant as similar to heroin, LSD. It is seen as a dangerous drug with no medicinal uses. Science, the medical community and cannabis advocates have campaigning for the federal government to either reschedule marijuana to a different category or deschedule it entirely since it has proven medical benefits.  Alcohol is considered a drug but is not scheduled.

President Joe Biden, running for re-election, has again brought marijuana into the picture, even mentioning it in his State of the Union address.  But he said he would work with the industry in 2020, took office in 2021 and finally, tentatively suggested a change in 2023.  Harris hasn’t been given a public role in the conversation until the meeting.

Researchers at Rutgers University suggest in a study marijuana can help ease the suffering of patients with severe IBS symptoms.  They analyzed data of Nationwide Readmissions Database from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, comparing IBS patients who were cannabis users vs. non-cannabis users. Among non-cannabis users, all-cause 30-day readmission rates were 12.7%. In cannabis users, that figures was only 8.1%. The study also found cannabis use correlated with shorter hospital stays and overall lower hospitalization charges.

The study included 6,798 adult IBS patients, 357 of which were identified as cannabis users. Autism, especially in the young, is an incredible difficult challenge…while some progress is being made, more needs to be done.

Around 1 in 36 children has been identified with autism in the U.S. according to the data. Around 1% of the world’s population or 75 million people has autism spectrum disorder. One out of every 100 children globally are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction, associated with the presence of restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities. The most effective interventions available are behavioral therapies based on applied behavioral analysis (ABA). But where is medical marijuana with autism?

Some studies show cannabis reduced the number and/or intensity of different symptoms, including hyperactivity, attacks of self-mutilation and anger, sleep problems, anxiety, restlessness, psychomotor agitation, irritability, aggressiveness perseverance, and depression. Moreover, they found an improvement in cognition, sensory sensitivity, attention, social interaction, and language. The most common adverse effects were sleep disorders, restlessness, nervousness and change in appetite.

Medical cannabis is usually welcomed by the families of young treatment-resistant ASD patients, often driven by evidence of CBD as a successful treatment for ASD-related symptoms and comorbidities (e.g., Dravet syndrome, Rett syndrome, Lennox–Gastaut syndrome), and as a somewhat natural product, devoid of any adverse effects. Unfortunately, lack of extensive research has not made a clear path. The occurrence of adverse outcomes is unclear due to the wide range of cannabis-based medications’ compositions and dosages within the studies.  Until marijuana is under the FDA, which would ensure consistent manufactures and dosage, it is still a challenge for patients.

What’s Up With Happy Finland And Marijuana

Is it supposed to the happiest place in the world – but what’s up with Finland and marijuana?

Finland has again reached the top of the list of happiest countries in the world. Rounding out the top 10 include Denmark, Iceland, Sweden, Israel, Netherland, Norway, Luxembourg, Switzerland and Australia. The University of Oxford, publishes the report and takes in data and a series of six variables in the more than 130 countries ranked in the report.  The variables include GDP per capita, freedom, generosity, social support, healthy life expectancy and freedom of corruption. This year the United States and Germany fell off the top 20 completely.

From a size point of view the top ten happiest countries, only the Netherlands and Australia have populations over 15 million. In the top 20, only Canada and the U.K. have populations over 30 million.

But what’s up with happy Finland and marijuana. Happy Canada was a groundbreaker in legalization weed, opening up some great science based medical benefits and filling the government coffers. The total population of Finland amounted to roughly 5.56 million. The largest age groups were 20 to 39 year-olds (1.39 million), and 40 to 59 year-olds (1.38 million), which made up over half of the population. So they should be up and with the times right?  Well, it is complicated.

What's Up With Happy Finland And Marijuana

Unless it’s prescribed for medicinal purposes (which is highly rare in Finland), it’s illegal to use cannabis. But an estimated 100,000 people still use it in the country every month, and usage has grown over the past few years. In an updated  procedure, the police issue summary fines for most personal use violation, and cases are not brought to court unless the defendant so desires. An aggravated drug offense and possession with intent to redistribute (possession for sale) are always brought to court and penalties are harsher.

Prime Minister Petteri Orpo’s (NCP) government is against the legalization of cannabis and against decriminalizing it.  However, his party’s youth wing came out in favour of decriminalising all drugs in 2022, before being shut down by its parent party.

The Perfect James Bond Martini

Did James Bond make the martini famous? Or did the martini help make Bond cool?

The classic line of “shaken or stirred” has been used by men for decades.  Bond instructs the bartender in the phrase “shaken and not stirred” in Diamonds Are Forever and Dr No and it has been in our lexicon ever since. But did Bond make the martini famous – or did the martini help Bond. And what is the perfect James Bond Martini?

The history of the martini is murky, “Professor” Jerry Thomas, a famous and influential 19th century bartender, invented the drink at the Occidental Hotel in San Francisco, sometime in the late 1850s or early 1860s. As the story goes, a miner, about to set out on a journey to Martinez, California, put a gold nugget on the bar and asked Thomas to mix him up something special. Thomas produced a drink containing Old Tom (sweetened) gin, vermouth, bitters and Maraschino, and dubbed it the “Martinez” in honor of the customer’s destination.

The big question is gin or vodka? Purist insist it be gin for the classic martini, but numbers say vodka is preferred. Vodka sales are about $7.5 billion annually while gin is around $5 billion. If you order a classic martini, you will probably be served gin unless you say vodka. Bond seems fairly fluid in his choice, he orders 19 vodka martinis and 16 gin martinis throughout Fleming’s novels and short stories.

Like Bond’s creator Ian Fleming, James Bond prefers his cocktails shaken and not stirred. A traditional martini is stirred rather than shaken, but Fleming’s biographer Andrew Lycett shared the author preferred martinis shaken since he believe it preserved the flavor.

Bond like celebrity chef Justin Khanna

Internationally known celebrity chef Justin Khanna has his take on the martini.
“The perfect Martini, to me, takes advantage of the “blank canvas” nature of this timeless cocktail. “Many cocktails restrict you to specific garnishes, and even fewer allow the liberty to swap the base spirit.
With the Martini, a vodka base that’s heavy on the olives and light on the vermouth is just as “right” as one made with gin and a twist of lemon, even though they couldn’t be more different once you take your first sip. Accompanied by a bowl of olives, bleu cheese or salty potato chips to snack on, and I’ll savor this iconic cocktail in bliss.
I personally love the body, complexity and herbaceous kick of vermouth, often making it a co-star in my version”

Maybe The New James Bond Should Update With Marijuana

Aaron Taylor-Johnson is to be the new James Bond…maybe he should update the image and add in some cannabis.

The buzz is Aaron Taylor-Johnson may be set to be the new James Bond. A British tabloid claims Eon Productions offered the iconic role to the actor after Daniel Craig stepped down.  What does it mean for the next round of movies? Maybe the new James Bond should update with marijuana.  There is a case of bold different direction, The Spy Who Loved Me used the title of one of Fleming’s novels, but was an original screenplay with nothing to do with the book plot. And both Sean Connery and Roger Moore flirted with the plant when young.

When Casino Royale was published in 1953, Bond burst on the scene.  When he hit the big screen via Eon Production in 1962 with Dr. Noan icon was born.  The name, the look, the cars, the martini all became part of the cultural language. While the 60s were the start of the cultural revolution, it hadn’t hit the movies.  And Eon was all about mass marketing and weed was not where it was at. Ian Fleming, Bond’s creator was an old school spy. He took his adventures and knowledge, added in a healthy dose of creativity and produced a series which have captured the public’s fancy.  Himself a fan of liquor and cigarettes, his writing reflects the times.

clear martini glass with black liquid

But since the new Bond will not appear at least until 2025, things have changed. The youngest fans in Gen Z have started drifting away from alcohol and embraced legal cannabis.  Also, over 85% of the population believe there should be some form of legal cannabis. A different landscape could add some updated nuance.

While it might be hard to switch out the martini for a vape or pre-roll, an ointment or gummy could be used to help with the frequent aches, pains and injuries the hero endures as he saves the world. The average deaths per movie is 16 people which usually involved some type of scuffle.  Popping a gummy to power through could be positive…or Q can give him some medical marijuana for injuries.

While Bond is known for charging hard, defeating the villains and winning the ladies.  It must take a tool.  Cannabis and even CBD can help him sleep and is proven to help with PTSD…which even the most ardent hero must have some regrets.

Let’s see what Eon does in the role and in the update.
