What TSA Does When They Find Marijuana

Flying with weed will remain problematic until the federal government ends the prohibition standard.

When it comes to getting through airport security with marijuana, there is a mixed bag of information. Some supposed toker travel experts say that flying with weed is as easy as stowing small amounts in checked luggage, while others argue it is best to keep the stash discreetly in a carry-on. Here is what TSA does when they find marijuana.

No matter which advice a person chooses to embrace, rest assured they will start second-guessing it while standing in line waiting for their turn to show the TSA agent their ticket and photo ID. Then, even though they are only carrying enough weed to roll a small joint, they’ll nearly have a panic attack by the time their luggage hits the x-ray machine. This is when  the nerves really kick into high gear and a series of lunatic thoughts like, “What will they do to me if they find that weed in my suitcase?” and “How much prison time am I looking at when that happens?” takes over and that little voice inside their heads tells them to drop their bags and run for dear life.

RELATED: Flying With Legal Weed: Does The TSA Care About Marijuana?

Whoa! Calm down there, Escobar. It’s not that deep. Sure, The folks at the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) are serious about their jobs, which is to prevent idiots, religious radicals and other unsavory characters from boarding airplanes with anything that might threaten the safety of the passengers. But they are not the Gestapo. These people understand that marijuana was never used to commit a savage act of terrorism, nor is it possible for someone to use it to invoke nuclear carnage. Weed is harmless, they get it. So, let’s just say that your rinky-dink marijuana stash is not a top priority.

But you still need to hide it from them.

“Are we cool? We like to think we’re cool,” TSA said in a recent Instagram post. “We want you to have a pleasant experience at the airport and arrive safely at your destination. But getting caught while trying to fly with marijuana or cannabis-infused products can really harsh your mellow.”

“Let us be blunt,” the post continued. “TSA officers DO NOT search for marijuana or other illegal drugs. Our screening procedures are focused on security and detecting potential threats. But in the event a substance appears to be marijuana or a cannabis-infused product, we’re required by federal law to notify law enforcement. This includes items that are used for medicinal purposes.”

Marijuana is now legal in many states for medicinal and recreational use, but it remains illegal under federal law. This means a traveler flying out of California who gets caught with marijuana by TSA agents is not going to face the same kind of hassles as someone flying out of Texas, where it is illegal. So depending on the law, getting caught with pot could mean just having to forfeit the stash before boarding the plane, or getting arrested, missing your flight and spending some time in jail. It is essential for travelers to understand the marijuana laws in the states they are flying in-and-out of – especially if they plan on chancing a dust-up at security over a little marijuana.

“We’re just reminding travelers to always be prepared for what to expect so that they are not caught unprepared or unaware of what would be allowed to pass through at a checkpoint,” Jenny Burke, a TSA spokesperson, told Forbes.

It is equally important for travelers to have a grip on how strict the airports are on the matter. Some of these facilities allow marijuana possession within the legal limits and others will even let travelers take weed beyond the security checkpoint if they are flying within a legal state. There are, however, some airports where their position on pot possession is vague. A few airports in legal states even provide travelers with “amnesty boxes” as sort of a last chance to dispose of weed before going through a security check. But these boxes are rare finds in the United States.

Flying with weed will remain problematic until the federal government ends the prohibition standard. Until that happens, though, smuggling pot through TSA is going to be a little risky. Congress is apparently looking into legislation this year that could lead to legalization at the national level, but for now, flying with weed should be considered illegal. Still, if you are searching for some tips on getting through TSA security checkpoints with marijuana clandestinely, we recommend reading our post “Smuggling A Little Marijuana On An Airplane Is No Big Deal.”

WATCH: Prince Harry Beams As He Announces Birth Of Son

New dad Prince Harry is absolutely glowing as he announces the much anticipated arrival of his firs child. He and wife Meghan Markle welcomed their son early this morning.

“We are pleased to announce that Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex welcomed their firstborn child in the early morning on May 6th, 2019. Their Royal Highnesses’ son weighs 7lbs. 3oz.,” the couple announced in an Instagram post earlier this morning.

And now, we have follow-up video of Harry announcing the big news himself.

“Mother and baby are doing incredibly well. It’s been the most amazing experience I could every possibly imagine,” he told a group of reporters outside Windsor Castle. “How any woman does what they do is behind comprehension, but we’re both absolutely thrilled.”

Harry says he and Meghan are still deciding on baby names. Baby Sussex takes Prince Andrew’s place as seventh in line for the throne. But he’s still behind his cousins Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

Harry says he and Meghan plan to share more details in a couple of days “as a family to be able to share it with you guys so everyone can see the baby!”.

The couple announced last month that they’d be eschewing the royal tradition of posing with their baby on the hospital steps like both Kate Middleton and Harry’s mom, Princess Diana, famously did.

Via Today:

The royal family just got a little bigger.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex welcomed their first child,a 7-pound, 3-ounce baby boy!

The announcement adhered to the couple’s intent to keep details around the baby’s arrival under tight wraps. A statement released by the palace earlier last month cautioned that Harry and Meghan planned to share news about the birth only “once they have had an opportunity to celebrate privately as a new family.”

The baby’s arrival caps an eventful year for the duke and duchess, who are about to celebrate their first wedding anniversary.

The couple tied the knot last year on May 19 in a ceremony watched around the world. Five months later, Kensington Palace delighted royal fans when it announced that Meghan was pregnant with her first child.

The new baby is the eighth great-grandchild for Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning monarch in British history.

The new royal baby now becomes the seventh in line to the throne, behind his father; three cousins, Prince George, 5, Princess Charlotte, 3, and Prince Louis, who just celebrated his first birthday; Harry’s brother, Prince William, and the baby’s grandfather, Prince Charles.

News about the impending addition for Harry, 34, and Meghan, 37, broke last October as the couple began their first official trip abroad, a two-week royal tour through Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga.

Meghan’s growing belly, or what Harry soon called “our little bump,” became the center of attention at every public excursion. Nearly every cradle of Meghan’s stomach became news. At one period, rumors spread quickly that the duchess was expecting twins.

Becoming parents is the latest milestone for Harry and Meghan, who met in July 2016 on a blind date set up by a mutual friend. The prince proposed to the California-born actress a year later during a “cozy” night roasting a chicken inside his Kensington Palace cottage. The pair kept their engagement under wraps until Kensington Palace made it public a few weeks later.

Amy Schumer, husband Chris Fischer expecting a boy

Via Fox News:

It’s a boy for Amy Schumer and Chris Fischer.

The comedian revealed the happy news in an Instagram post slamming fast food chain Wendy’s and calling out Chance the Rapper for endorsing the brand.

“Hey! We love @chancetherapper and hate to be the ones to tell him that Wendys is the only fast food chain refusing to protect farmworker women from sexual assault and rape in the fields. This is true,” she wrote alongside a photo of herself with Fischer, 39, in a nursery.

“Please read that sentence again. Message for the people in charge: Instead of spicy nuggets, we want food that is harvested with dignity NOT violence. Please join the @fairfoodprogram and #BoycottWendys link in my bio of how you can help,” the 37-year-old “Trainwreck” star continued.

Days earlier, she shared a photo of her growing bump from a doctor’s office, writing, “Oh yeah does it feel to everyone like I’ve been pregnant for a long time? It must be getting annoying to you all that I’m still pregnant. Well imagine how I feel mother f—ker!!!!!!”

Schumer has been open about the struggles she’s faced with her first pregnancy since announcing in October that she was expecting.

Ask Dr. Green: How Can I Use Marijuana To Deal With Chemotherapy?

Ask Dr. Green: How Can I Use Marijuana To Deal With Chemotherapy?

Dear Dr. Green:

I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer and will begin chemotherapy four weeks from now. Some of my friends who have also battled this hideous disease have suggested I try marijuana to help with the side effects of chemo. What are your thoughts? — Melanie J., Pagosa Springs, Colo.

Dear Melanie:

I am so sorry that you must deal with this dangerous disease. Fortunately, our chemotherapy regimens and anti-nausea medications have improved significantly over the past few decades. The severity of side effects from chemo varies greatly from person to person. Unfortunately there are, however, people who have significant side effects.

When considering any drug to manage side effects of chemotherapy, we have to realize that we do not have a single medication that will manage all side effects.

Some of the potential side effects of chemo for breast cancer include hair loss, nausea, a lack of desire to eat, constipation, diarrhea, chemo brain (with a difficulty to concentrate or focus).

RELATED: Understanding The Marijuana And Chemotherapy Connection

One of the most bothersome side effects is hair loss. This is a painful reminder of the disease and the chemo. Fortunately these are support groups that help people through this. I do not feel the use of cannabis will affect hair loss. There are cooling caps that may decrease hair loss.

There are pharmaceuticals derived from cannabis for nausea already in use in the United States. These complement other pharmaceuticals. In studies we have found that the pharmaceutical agents are generally more effective than cannabis. However there is a group of patients for whom cannabis works better than standard medications. If these standard medications fail to improve your situation, I think it would be worthwhile to consider medical cannabis if you are in a state where this is legal.

A review of 30 studies showed significant improvement with oral cannabis. Inhaled cannabis was not within this review. There are animal studies that show cannabis improves appetite, decreases anxiety and improves sleep. From anecdotal reports we also see that this is true in humans.

There are people who suffer from chemo brain (decreased concentration and focus) while receiving chemo. We also know that some people using cannabis can have difficulty concentrating. In the same review of cannabis for nausea, some side effects were drowsiness, sedation, feeling high, euphoria and depression. All potential side effects need to be kept in mind when trying a new medication.

RELATED: Tell Us Your Story: How Marijuana Helped A Mother With Stage 4 Colon Cancer

Since the cognitive side effects of cannabis may be similar to those of chemo, some practitioners advocate for trying cannabis prior to chemo so that the patient understands the effects of cannabis by itself. There are also preparations with higher percentages of CBD rather than THC, which may have less of an effect on concentration. You should discuss the types of preparations with your medical marijuana provider.

I wish you good luck with your chemo.

These Are The Secret Royal Code Names For William, Harry, Meghan And Kate

The names Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are basically considered new additions to Merriam-Webster by most of us, they’re so commonplace these days. But to those hired to protect them, they’re known as something entirely different.

Thanks to the Daily Mail, we now know the famous couple’s secret code names that use the initials D.S. to reference their royal titles (Duke and Duchess of Sussex). What’s their Mr. & Mrs. Smith persona? Why, it’s David Stevens and Davina Scott.

https://giphy.com/gifs/ui1hpJSyBDWlG

As for their in-laws, Prince William and Kate Middleton, the secret service plays by the same rules, using the aliases ‘Danny Collins’ and ‘Daphne Clark’, as a nod to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (D.C.).

Says a royal source to the Daily Mail:

If anyone got hold of a phone belonging to a royal aide or security team member, they won’t find Harry Windsor and Meghan’s names in it. It is far too risky in the wrong hands. They get given code names but they are changed regularly for obvious reasons.

So, how did these code names find their way to the public if they’re so secret? They recently came tumbling out of the mouth of one of Prince Harry’s aides at an event when he tried to explain to a worker why someone named David Stevents wanted to speak to him.

Said the royal source, ‘Imagine the surprise he got when he heard Harry’s voice on the other end of the line.’

The Summer Skinny On CBD Sunscreen

As stated in the 1997 Baz Luhrmann’s spoken-word sensation, “Everybody’s Free To Wear Sunscreen,” it’s highly important not to forget such cream. Strong sun rays on unprotected skin can be as dangerous as a pack of cigarettes. Now, in what seems like an unending slew of usefulness, CBD is being incorporated into sunscreens for more than just the buzzword.

Aside from being a skin friendly carrier oil, CBD also has anti-inflammatory properties, which keeps skin from becoming inflamed by the sun. Of course CBD is working in conjunction with zinc oxide, and they seem to make a mighty team. Cannabinoid alchemists everywhere seem to be infusing sunscreen with CBD.

RELATED: 5 Cannabis Products That Will Defeat Eczema In Time For Summer

In one example, NeuCana has developed a whole flower CBD potion intended for one’s delicate facial tissue. With 360 milligrams of CBD in every bottle, the cannabinoids work in conjunction with non-nano zinc oxide to provide protection. The only rub of it is that it need be reapplied every 45 minutes. An inconvenience that may not suit the flow of everyone’s day.

“We create products for the sun loving, tree hugging festival fairies,” states the website of Felix & Ambrosia, the creators of Sunny Daze Glitter Sunscreen with CBD oil. Meant for millenials in particular, this CBD sporting sunblock is a fashion statement physically, politically and botanically. This is a fun choice for festival goers and those who bare their skin, loud and proud, during the warmer months.

On a more practical note, Cannabios Hemp Sunscreen has an SPF of 50+ and comes in fairly plain, affordable bottles. Made with rosemary essential oils, the website explains that the savory, bushy herb contributes to the skin protection against harmful rays and reminds readers and potential purchasers that sunscreen is useful year round.

In every good life, there’s bound to be a time when some sunny day activities arise and you don’t have time to grab the sunscreen. Rather than scolding yourself after a good time, treat yourself to the ultimate relief with the CBD infused, aloe vera based Lost Remedy’s Burn Formula. With tea tree and olive oil enhancing the experience, your reddened epidermis will thank you on contact.

Just remember the sage opening words of Baz Luhrmann’s Sunscreen speech this summer, and yes, year round, “If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proven by scientists…” As have the many benefits of CBD. Together they’re a soup and a sandwich.

This Week’s Music: Rhye, Banks And Vampire Weekend

This Week’s Music is a weekly column that discusses the week’s best, worst, and most interesting songs. We try to select songs of different artists and genres to keep things interesting and to please a variety of music fans.

This week’s column features Rhye’s last single, Vampire Weekend’s collaboration with Danielle Haim, and Banks’ “Gimme.” Check them out below:

Indie

Rhye – Needed

Rhye’s music takes its time, maybe testing your patience, but ultimately rewarding those that stick around with a sensuous and thoughtful experience. “Needed” follows last year’s “Blood,” Rhye’s second studio album which has some of the duo’s most defining songs. “Needed” is part of a piano project called “Spirit,” which will presumably be released soon, and although it doesn’t show us anything different from the band, I’m happy to bask in their sound and see what comes next.

Electronic

BANKS – Gimme

RELATED: This Week’s Music: Madonna, FKA Twigs And Taylor Swift

Banks new song features her always impressive production yet really crumbles when it comes to lyrics. Filled with repetitions and with silly lines like “you can call me that bitch,” the single left me confused, not by its content but by its emptiness. “Gimme” is a song that wants to be provocative but is void of any provocation. Banks’ talent is there in spades; it’d be great if she stopped trying to craft a look, and for her to just thrive by doing her own thing. Of course, that’s easier said than done.

Rock

Vampire Weekend Ft. Este Haim – Hold You Now

Vampire Weekends’ new record is a behemoth, made up of 18 songs bound together by motif and mood. “Father of the Bride” is an album that can be heard in one sit down, the songs blending together seamlessly and time flowing by without bumps. It’s a homogeneous experience, one that lulls you, with few songs here and there jolting you awake. It deserves a closer listen though, with the record always having a deeper meaning, filled with complex lyrics, interesting arrangements and their always experimental attitude. “Hold You Now” is the first song of the album and it’s an old school duet, held together by guitars and two lead voices, all new facets of the band. It’s deceptively simple and gorgeous.

Dogs Of Instagram: Scottish Terrier

This week’s dogs of Instagram: Scottish Terrier.  They are an independent, confident and dignified breed with human-like characteristics. Territorial and feisty, the Scottie makes a great watchdog and is known to be incredibly loyal to its family. Its notable beard, lower body and legs make the breed instantly recognizable. The bold Scottie has coats of black, brindle, or wheaten yellow.

Other than the German Shepherd, the Scottish Terrier is the only breed to have lived in the White House three times. Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Scottie, Fala, is immortalized at his owner’s monument, situated right next to his side. George W. Bush had two Scottie’s at the White House, Barney and Miss Beazley. Other notables with Scottish Terriers include Dwight D. Eisenhower, Jackie O and Queen Victoria.

Here we pay homage to five of the most famous Scottish Terriers found on Instagram.

5 Quirky Dealbreakers In Dating

Relationships can be challenging, mainly because you’re dealing with two people who likely have different preferences and pet peeves, which are very personal. What may seem random and completely permissible to you may be someone’s biggest deal breaker.  Here are 5 quick dealbreakers in dating.

The wrong astrology sign

https://giphy.com/gifs/funny-the-office-tv-show-PMqhzKfuiMLQc

RELATED: 5 Things We Usually Get Wrong About Sex

Nabeela Aysen explained to the New York Post that she lets astrology guide her relationships and potential romantic partners. She claims that she’ll never date an Aquarian because they’re stubborn and too different from her. “I know you can’t paint everyone with the same brush, but for whatever reason, [Aquarians’] core values are all the same — they internalize all their feelings, it’s difficult to read them and they’re noncommittal,” she said. Aysen is currently looking for a partner who’s a Leo.

Poor grammar

https://giphy.com/gifs/dumb-judge-judy-BYeeRPPXcQS4M

This is understandable. If the person’s grammar is awful and barely legible, it’s hard to understand how they’ve managed to lead a functional life. “I refuse to talk to any guy on tinder that opens with ‘hows you’ or ‘hows yous’ which isn’t uncommon where I live. I don’t know why it bothers me so much,” said someone on a Reddit thread.

Bad taste in food

https://giphy.com/gifs/astrology-apr-fFdxA40DpBrNK

The rise of the digital era has helped us develop our sense of taste, giving us access to delicious food photography, recipes and more. Good taste has become a priority for a lot of people, and although you might appear snobbish, it’s a valid concern if someone doesn’t share that with you. “I have had guys say, ‘I don’t eat vegetables,’ or order, like, a hamburger at a Michelin-starred restaurant or something. It becomes laborious every time we go out. Like, is he a child?” a single 38-year-old New Yorker told the New York Post.

Dumb Facebook statuses

RELATED: Survey: Nearly Half Of Us Would Rather Have A Clean House Than Sex

This is quite a popular deal breaker, where someone’s social media presence is a big turn off and is completely different from how they are in real life. Facebook is a prime spot for highlighting these traits, especially when it comes to spreading news from strange sources.

Someone addicted to screens

https://giphy.com/gifs/infomercial-youtube-random-4LL66XsL0aTZe

Phone addiction is real, and most of us suffer from it to some degree. There are people who take it very far, unable to check their phones on dates and conversations. These people are distracting, rude, and anxiety-inducing. Nick Grosche explains to the Post that whenever a date starts taking pictures of the food they just ordered, he’ll make an excuse  to go home.

The Scary Reason You Want To Avoid A Window Seat On Your Next Flight

A warning for those of you who like a window seat on the plane: you could be exposing yourself to harmful UV rays.

According to experts, harmful UVA rays can penetrate the glass. Marc Glashofer, MD, a dermatologist at The Dermatology Group tells Condé Nast Traveler that getting sunburned should be worrisome, but not as much as its deadlier counterpart. That’s because there are two types of ultraviolet (UV) rays: UVB rays, which cause sunburn, and UVA rays, which penetrate the skin deeper, potentially causing cancer. While plane windows do a decent job of blocking UVB rays, Glashofer says, they allow the transmission of UVA rays.

According to a recent study examining the repercussions of pilots exposed to UV rays, “Airplane windshields are commonly made of polycarbonate plastic or multilayer composite glass. UV-B (280-320 nm) transmission through both plastic and glass windshields was reported to be less than one percent. However, UV-A (320-380 nm) transmission ranged from 0.41 percent to 53.5 percent, with plastic attenuating more UV radiation than glass.”

RELATED: Airplane Turbulence Is Going To Suck Thanks To Global Warming

That same study found that pilots flying a plane for just one hour were exposed to UVA rays equivalent to a 20-minute tanning bed session. And don’t let the size of a plane window fool you. Even though they’re small, the hours on a long flight can add up, increasing your risk for skin cancer. So, either pull down the shade or slather on some sunscreen that’s at least SPF 30.
