Marijuana Legalization: A Rare Issue Where Women Are More Conservative Than Men

Surveys show that on issue after issue, women are more liberal than men, save for one: Men are more likely than women to support the legalization of marijuana.

Americans are becoming more supportive of marijuana legalization each year but the gender gap remains a constant: While 68 percent of men now support marijuana legalization, only 56 percent of women do.

What’s behind this gender gap?

We suspected mothers might be a key driver. In our book “The Politics of Parenthood,” we were able to show that mothers support policies that help children, whether it’s subsidized health care or public assistance for needy kids. So we naturally assumed that mothers – out of concern for children’s health – were driving the gender divide on the issue.

We were wrong.

Parenthood is political

Becoming a parent and raising a child is a profound life-altering experience. It changes how you spend your time, the way you think about your finances, whom you socialize with, and what you worry about.

But until recently, political scientists had ignored the ways being a parent might shape political attitudes.

RELATED: Are Weed Moms The New Wine Moms?

In previous research, we drew from a range of national data sets to show that parenthood is, indeed, political. We showed that parents have distinct views on a range of policies, from government spending on education and child care, to the role the government should play in helping others.

Dads today are more likely to take on child care duties than in the past. But we found that parenthood remains a highly gendered experience. Mothers still spend more time parenting than men. Mothers also engage in more of the day-to-day work of parenting such as scheduling play dates and making doctor appointments.

Given the greater amount of time women spend caring for and worrying about their children, it’s perhaps not surprising that women’s political views are more affected than men’s by the experience of being a parent.

Across time and across demographic groups, motherhood consistently pushes women to embrace more liberal views on the role of government, which they see as a source of support for their kids.

Testing the motherhood hypothesis

All of this previous research fortified our belief that motherhood would be a major driver behind the gender gap on marijuana legalization. After all, so many of the anti-drug messages in the media focus on the dangers drugs hold for children.

It makes sense that mothers – worried about the safety of their children – might not want a mind altering drug to become freely available. Some earlier research even hinted that this might be the case.

RELATED: These 8 Celeb Moms Are Not Ashamed To Smoke Marijuana

To put our motherhood hypothesis to the test, we drew on a distinctive data set from the Pew Research Center that included a series of questions on attitudes towards marijuana, including self-reported marijuana usage.

Unexpectedly, we discovered that mothers and fathers were no more likely to oppose marijuana legalization than women and men without kids.

The real drivers of the divide

So if a lack of support among women for legalization has nothing to do with motherhood, what’s behind their tepid support?

We identified three key drivers.

First, women are more likely to be religious than men. Earlier work has found that, unsurprisingly, religious people are more disapproving of marijuana use and less likely to try drugs.

Second, men have a higher tolerance for risk than women. Legalizing marijuana involves some risks to society, and it appears that men are more comfortable with these risks than women.

But what best explains the gender gap in support is the gender gap in marijuana use. Men simply use marijuana more than women, and this seems to make them more likely to support legalization.

We were curious about which other demographic and political factors might predict marijuana use and support for legalization. Some results were surprising, while others weren’t.

Married people and older people were less likely to report using marijuana – no surprise there. But we found that despite Republicans’ lower level of support for marijuana legalization, Republicans were just as likely as Democrats to report using marijuana.

The other surprise was that mothers and fathers who had children 18 or younger in the home were just as likely to report using marijuana as non-parents.

The fact that mothers use marijuana as much as other women certainly helps explain why there’s no motherhood gap for marijuana attitudes. When it comes to marijuana, the perception that mothers are distinctively moral – or make more wholesome choices than the rest of society in order to protect their children – isn’t really supported by the data. The Conversation

New Law Requires UK Online Users To Submit ID In Order To Watch Porn

0

After a lot of hard work and controversy, the U.K. government has passed a law that will force online porn sites to introduce age verification software starting July 15, 2019.

The Guardian reports that once this law is in effect, online porn providers will have to activate an efficient age verification system in order to avoid sanctions, blockages and the withdrawal of payment services from their sites. These age verification methods include the use of passports, credit cards, porn passes purchased from physical stores, or government issued IDs — anything that proves the user’s age with some sort of legitimacy.

“Adult content is currently far too easy for children to access online,” digital minister Margot James tells The Guardian. “The introduction of mandatory age verification is a world first, and we’ve taken the time to balance privacy concerns with the need to protect children from inappropriate content. We want the UK to be the safest place in the world to be online, and these new laws will help us achieve this.”

Although the law will certainly prevent children from watching porn, many opponents claim that it could have a chilling effect on free speech, posing a threat for people’s identity and privacy. It’s reasonable to fear a measure that will make it possible for your porn browsing history to be associated with your passport number.

A law as strict as this one will have a big effect on the British porn industry, affecting millions of workers, websites and decreasing the amount of porn that’s consumed. The good or bad in this is up to interpretation, but censorship, especially when applied to the internet, tends to create more problems than it resolves.

This Week’s Music: Carly Rae Jepsen, Avicii And Frou Frou

This Week’s Music is a weekly column that discusses the week’s best, worst, and most interesting songs. We try to select songs of different artists and genres to keep things interesting and to please a variety of music fans.

This week’s column features Carly Rae Jepsen’s last single before the release of her much awaited album, Avicii’s first song of his posthumous album and Frou Frou’s comeback. Check them out.

Pop

Carly Rae Jepsen – Julien

“Dedicated,” Carly Rae Jepsen’s fourth album, will be released on May 17. “Julien” is the first track of the record and it’s a great opener that promises more of what fans and critics have come to love about Jepsen’s music and style, which is layered, more complex than it appears to be on a first listen, and always entertaining. Unlike “Party for One” and Jepsen’s last couple of singles, “Julien” is a little more contemplative, darker and melancholic, a good look for her new album which promises great things.

EDM

Avicii – SOS

RELATED: This Week’s Music: The National, BTS And PJ Harvey

“SOS” is the first song from Avicii’s posthumous album. It features Aloe Blacc, who worked with Avicii on EDM staple “Wake Me up.” The influence is obvious; you can spot the pair trying hard to retrace their old steps, looking for the same amount of success and influence that the first song achieved. This isn’t the case, “SOS” feels like a song that came out a couple of years too late, one that belongs to another time when EDM was still at it’s most basic form. Still, the song was released by the Avicii’s family as a way of honoring his achievements and all the proceeds will be donated to charity, so at least there’s plenty of good intentions.

Indie

Frou Frou – Guitar Song

“Guitar Song” is Frou Frou’s first song since 2003, when the duo split up amicably and each member decided to work on their own careers. Made up of Imogen Heap and Guy Sigsworth, there’s plenty of talent in Frou Frou to keep things interesting and different. “Guitar Song” is an easy song, perfectly described by its own name, with a simple set up of instruments and Heap’s powerful and singular vocals. Frou Frou is going on tour this year, giving them the opportunity to deliver songs that have their unique staple.

Best Shows And Movies To Watch While High

There’s a lot of enjoyable things you can do after smoking marijuana, but sometimes it’s best to stick to traditions. Before we discovered that cannabis was great for getting yourself amped-up to clean your house and go for a run, people used it as an excuse to buy snacks, smoke a joint, and watch tons of entertainment. This is a classic practice for a reason, especially when you have the right programs at your disposal.

“High TV” is its own genre of television and movie watching. Depending on your tolerance and personality, you could choose to go silly or mind-bending. These stories receive an added layer of awesomeness and depth when paired with marijuana that you won’t find anywhere else. Check out 10 of the best shows and movies you can watch while high.

Broad City

RELATED: The 14 Absolutely Twisted Movies You Should Watch On 4/20

One of the best stoner shows of the decade, “Broad City” is perfect to sit around, smoke and laugh without having to worry over anything else other than Abbi and Ilana’s hundreds of misadventures. The show just concluded it’s fifth and final season, making it the perfect opportunity to do a rewatch or, if you’re lucky, binge the entire show for the first time.

Adventure Time

https://giphy.com/gifs/adventure-time-sad-cartoon-o2qMumW7rlYqs

“Adventure Time” is a beloved cartoon that has shades of Dungeons and Dragons and Hayao Miyazaki. It focuses on the adventures of Finn and Jake, a pair of stepbrothers made up of human and a dog, as they travel through the post-apocalyptic Land of Ooo. Here, they encounter all sorts of layered characters and get involved with a lot of weird and beautiful stuff.

Bob’s Burgers

“Bob’s Burgers” is one of the sweetest and most hilarious shows around, especially once you get past season 1 and get to the good stuff. Centering on the Belcher family, each family member is given enough attention and personality that you’ll have a hard time picking favorites. Each episode tells its own little story, making it an easy watch, all the while featuring some of the best voice acting in the animation industry.

The Matrix

https://giphy.com/gifs/reaction-3WvhJ783Le5ieNEZ8z

The Matrix is one of the trippiest and most mind-blowing movies in the world, still managing to have one of the best twists of all time despite the fact that the technology and outfits are wildly outdated. 20 years after it’s initial release the film has lost a little bit of the charm its action sequences used to hold, but it’s still as thought provoking as ever.

2001: A Space Odyssey

2001 is one of the scariest and most beautiful movies ever made, especially if you’re a patient viewer and if marijuana makes you feel focused. Besides, space and marijuana are always a reliable pairing.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

https://giphy.com/gifs/disney-cinema-qKB77Csamns8U

One of the coolest ideas ever brought to screen, Who Framed Roger Rabbit? boasts some of the best actors of the 90’s and it combines live action and animation in a way that’s still seamless and gorgeous. It’s also very risque for a Disney movie.

A Clockwork Orange

https://giphy.com/gifs/filmstruck-stanley-kubrick-a-clockwork-orange-xU1V1j6BBrlHWVmgzC

Although some might say that this movie is a little too intense, it’s an amazing story if you can stomach the violence and depravity. Just make sure you don’t smoke too much and freak out mid-movie. That would be bad. Potentially traumatizing.

John Wick

https://giphy.com/gifs/john-wick-XUEQSE1pKSWIw

John Wick has a very simple idea at it’s core, yet the way in which the movie is executed, taking advantage of its sets, actors and color, is unlike anything else on the market. John Wick has been tremendously influential since its release and it’s also reminded us of how good Keanu Reeves is when movies just let him do his own thing.

Army of Darkness

Army of Darkness is the third installment of the Evil Dead series, and it’s the most lighthearted and daring one of the bunch. It’s among the defining camp movies of the 90’s, at times terrifying, hilarious, and impactful.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show

https://giphy.com/gifs/foxhomeent-fox-rocky-horror-3j3EQjqIi4523XG6Tw

Originally premiered in 1975, The Rocky Horror Picture Show still manages to be progressive and unlike anything else in Hollywood. With a nonsensical story and a combination of great performances, set designs and music, this movie is one of the greatest cult classics ever made.

This Is The Code Phrase That Will Be Used When The Queen Dies

On Sunday, April 21, Queen Elizabeth will be celebrating her 93rd birthday and, by all accounts, is fully expected to be alive for the big party. This is one broad who shows no signs of slowing down. But one of these days, the proverbial candles on the Queen’s cake will be blown out…for good. And when that happens, there’s a secret code phrase palace staff will utter that will follow a chain of command to inform insiders that the Her Majesty has died.

It starts with the Queen’s private secretary, who will repeat this phrase to the Prime Minister over a secure phone line. And that phrase is: “London Bridge is down.”

A Yummy Cannabis Creme Easter Egg Recipe

Easter candy lovers, rejoice: these homemade creme eggs combine one of your favorite Springtime treats with a delicious dose of cannabutter!

These chocolate eggs may look quite innocent, but they have a surprise inside. As you bite through the chocolate coating and sweet vanilla filling, you’ll discover a core of cannabutter which is bound to make this an Easter unlike any other. They’re easy to make and the effects are long-lasting, so you’re bound to be enjoying these long after the Easter egg hunt is over.

Makes 24 candies:

  • 1 stick (4 ounces) unsalted (non-cannabutter), softened
  • ½ cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • 4-5 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 7 oz milk or dark chocolate, coarsely chopped
  • ½ cup cannabutter (1 tsp per candy; see “A Note on Dosage”), slightly cool

Note: This recipe can be made with regular cannabutter or vegan cannabutter.

Photos by Jessie Moore

1. Combine the butter, sweetened condensed milk, vanilla extract and salt in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Mix on medium-high for about 3 minutes, or until creamy. Add the sugar, one cup at a time, until the mixture has thickened to the texture of play-doh.

Photos by Jessie Moore

2. Grab a teaspoon of your cannabutter; since it is slightly cool, you should be able to easily roll it into a ball. Then, grab a heaping tablespoon of white dough, and roll it into a (larger) ball. Flatten the white dough slightly to make an indent. Place the cannabutter ball in the center, then gently wrap the white dough around the yellow dough, covering it all around. Shape into an egg shape. Continue with all of the portions of dough, wrapping a teaspoon of cannabutter into each, until you’ve run out of dough. I personally got about 24 eggs from this batch.

Photos by Jessie Moore

3. Place the egg-shaped dough portions on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, and freeze for about 30 minutes. You want them to be really firm for the next step.

Photos by Jessie Moore

4. Meantime, melt your chocolate, either in the microwave or in a double boiler.

Photos by Jessie Moore

5. Remove the chilled egg centers from the freezer. Dip the eggs into the melted chocolate, coating on all sides. Let the excess chocolate drip off. Transfer the candies to a wire rack above a sheet of parchment paper (or right on the parchment, if you want them to retain a pretty coating on all sides). Let the eggs set until firm. Enjoy!

A note on dosage:

I “dosed” this recipe with 1 teaspoon of cannabutter per serving. The strength of your finished product will depend on many factors, including the type of marijuana you used and how you made your cannabutter. For more tips on proper dosage, visit this post.

What Canopy Growth Buying Acreage Holdings Means For Marijuana Consumers

The cannabis industry is so convinced that federal legalization is on the verge of taking hold across the United States that it is already making significant deals to create a stoner superpower for when that happens. Earlier this week, Canadian marijuana producer Canopy Growth, the company working with Constellation Brands on a THC-infused beverage, signed a $3.4 billion deal to take over medical marijuana firm Acreage Holdings as soon as the federal government ends prohibition.

Although the deal was loosely secured in ink this week in New York, nothing is set to happen until Congress pushes a bill intended to legalize marijuana at the national level and that measure is signed into law by the sitting president. It is sort of a preliminary agreement that will really only take shape if shareholders from both camps agree on the transaction. It is also contingent on approval by both U.S. and Canadian regulators. However, the companies believe this is the first step to unleashing the world’s first true ganja giant  — and they are confident their shareholder will support it.

RELATED: Here’s What Canopy Growth Investors Need to Know About the Houseplant Deal

“Today we announce a complex transaction with a simple objective. Our right to acquire Acreage secures our entrance strategy into the United States as soon as a federally-permissible pathway exists,” Bruce Linton, co-CEO for Canopy, saidin a press release. “By combining Acreage’s management team, licenses and assets with Canopy Growth’s intellectual property and brands, there will be tremendous value creation for both companies’ shareholders.”

But wait, didn’t we hear that Constellation Brands, makers of Heineken beer, was working on taking a controlling interest in Canopy Growth?

Well, Constellation Brands, which is working with Canopy on a THC brew that will be distributed in Canada, is part of this deal, according to reports. So, it appears that if Constellation decides to flex its stake in the company in the next several years, it could still end up taking a controlling interest. Technically, this would mean that one of the largest brewing companies in the world would become one of the largest cannabis producers as well. Either way it shakes out, Constellation gets to keep members on Canopy’s board of directors. The beer giant is going anywhere.

RELATED: NHL Alumni Association And Canopy Growth Partner On Marijuana Pain Relief Study

It is actually a smart move on the part of Canopy to move ahead with this deal now as opposed to waiting for the U.S. government to get its act together. It gets the wheels turning in preparation for federal legalization takes shape, ensuring that Canopy will be the first cannabis company to become a legitimate major player in the newly legal climate. Sure, we hear lots of discussions these days about the players in pot, like MedMen, but none of those will have the strength of Canopy. In a way, this deal almost guarantees that everyone else out there dabbling in marijuana commerce is destined to become mom and pop operations once weed goes fully legal.

Another way to look at this deal is someone knows something. Considering the cold feet the federal government has had over the years concerning the end of pot prohibition, it is difficult to predict when legalization will happen. But Canopy would not have forked over a $300 million down payment if they didn’t have some grip on the timeline. Therefore, it is conceivable that this deal means that federal legalization is right around the corner. Whether that happens this year or next, no one really has a clue. But considering that former House Speaker John Boehner not only sits on the board at Acreage as well as oversees a team of marijuana lobbyists in DC looking to drum up support for legalization bills, we’re going out on a limb and saying prohibition is on its last leg.

So, what does all of this mean for pot consumers? Try buying marijuana products in a manner similar to beer nationwide.

Richard Madden Posts Throwback Pic Of ‘GOT’ Costars; Justin Bieber Tears Into Laura Ingraham: ‘Absolutely Disgusting’

Richard Madden Posts Throwback With His ‘Game of Thrones’ Costars After Their First Table Read

Via People:

Now that Game of Thrones‘ eighth season is officially underway, Richard Madden is looking back at his beginnings on the acclaimed HBO series with fond memories.

On Thursday, the actor, 32, shared an adorable throwback photo, featuring him alongside GOT costars Kit Harington and Alfie Allen, taken shortly after their first table read for the series.

In the photograph, both Madden and Harington, 32 (who play Jon Snow and Robb Stark on the show, respectively) smile for the camera, while Allen, 32, (who plays Theon Greyjoy) hams it up in a gray hoodie and keeps his eyes and mouth open wide.

“#TBT This is Kit, Alfie and I after our first read through of S1 Ep1 of Game of Thrones about 10 years ago. KIDZ,” Madden captioned the sweet shot.

The pals appeared to have had fit in a visit to the iconic Northern Ireland Ferris wheel, The Wheel of Belfast, between GOT rehearsals.

Justin Bieber Tears Into Laura Ingraham: ‘Absolutely Disgusting’ And ‘Should Be Fired’

Via HuffPo:

Justin Bieber has joined the growing chorus of entertainers calling for Fox News to fire its controversial prime-time host Laura Ingraham.

The Canadian singer-songwriter wrote an Instagram post on Thursday that described Ingraham’s on-air joking and laughing about the death of community activist, rapper and musician Nipsey Hussle as “absolutely disgusting”:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BwZ7Sy2nciE

Hussle, who was born Ermias Asghedom, was shot and killed in March in South Los Angeles.

High-profile rappers, including Snoop Dogg, The Game and T.I., have also criticized Ingraham’s coverage. An online petition demanding her termination from Fox has garnered more than 44,000 signatures.

Ingraham made headlines earlier this week when she criticized the inclusion of model and cookbook author Chrissy Teigen in Time magazine’s list of 100 most influential people of 2019.

Teigen fired back in a series of blistering tweets in which she called Ingraham a “white supremacist.” Ingraham has a well-documented history of repeating white supremacist talking points on her widely watched show.
