Jimmy Buffett Makes A Move To ‘Marijuanaville’

Apologies in advance, but I am contractually obligated to make the following and very corny joke—ahem: Looks like Jimmy Buffett is leaving “Margaritaville” and moving to “Marijuanaville!” Instead of that lost shaker of salt, he’s now searching for his, er, lost shaker of shake! He’s still watching the sun bake, though.

Jokes aside, Jimmy Buffett will license his Coral Reefer band name and brand to place on cannabis products ranging from vaporizers to edibles. The licensing deal is through medical cannabis giant Surterra.

“I have followed and studied with keen intensity the recent evolvement of the medical marijuana story and the path towards the simple common-sense conclusion that cannabis is good medicine,” Buffett said on Tuesday.

You might be familiar with Surterra’s recently appointed chairman — William “Beau” Wrigley Jr., the former CEO and heir to the Wrigley chewing gum empire. Buffett partnered with Wrigley on the deal. According the Wall Street Journal, Buffett was approached by other startup companies to use his brand name, but ultimately sided with Surterra because of its medical focus.

A New York Times profile earlier this year noted that “Jimmy Buffett does not live the Jimmy Buffett lifestyle” anymore. The party icon of old “has been replaced with a well-preserved businessman.” He doesn’t do carbs or sugars, and doesn’t smoke marijuana anymore. Instead, he vapes oils “only sometimes after work,” like a responsible 71-year-old rock star.

So Buffett’s decision to side with Surterra is understandable. However, it’s worth noting that Wrigley told Bloomberg last month that he aims to move Surterra into the recreational cannabis space eventually and soak up some of the $5 billion market that recreational marijuana is anticipated to produce across nine legal states. In other words, don’t expect Marijuanaville to stay small for long.

App Gives Recipes Based On Your Food Photos

If there’s one thing that hasn’t yet been invaded by artificial intelligence, it’s food. But PixFood plans to fix that. The new app give recipes based your food photos. It will allow users to know exactly which ingredients make up a plate, while also giving them personalized recipes. Because that’s what we all need, especially on a lazy day.

How the app works is pretty straightforward: take a picture of food and the app tells you which ingredients are involved in the making of the dish, while also giving recipes based on the food you have in your fridge.

TechCrunch reports that the main difference between PixFood and other food apps is the fact that the former is personalized and creates a profile for you that’s singular and unlike anyone else’s. “After you take a photo, the app instantly sends you tailored recipe suggestions! At first, they are more or less the same for everyone, but as you continue using it, it starts to learn what you precisely like, by connecting patterns and taking into consideration different behaviors,” said Martin Tonnesson, CEO and founder of PixFood.

The next step in the recently launched app is to connect itself to restaurants and delivery services, so you can order something your craving or the items you need in order to cook whatever the app is recommending.

Mark Wahlberg Reveals His Insane Schedule And Social Media Has Questions

0

The name Mark Wahlberg is usually associated with music or movies, or even Wahlburgers, the burger joint he owns with his brothers Paul and Donny. But lately, the name elicits confusion over some strange remarks the actor made on social media.

Last year, Wahlberg, who is now a devout catholic, dropped a bombshell saying he regrets acting in Boogie Nights despite the fact that the film basically launched his acting career. And now, he’s making headlines again for revealing that he keeps the world’s most bizarre schedule.

The actor posted his typical daily schedule in an Instagram story, where he claimed that he wakes up every day at 2:30 a.m. and that he has breakfast by 3:15 a.m.. There’s also family time scheduled at 11 a.m., suggesting that his kids don’t go to school or that they’re home schooled. Wouldn’t be surprised.

Wahlberg also goes to bed by 7:30 p.m., something that has confused people from all over the Internet and has Vanity Fair suggesting that maybe he’s just a muscled and colicky baby.

Congress Eliminates Medical Marijuana Provision For Veterans

Regardless of how progressive some federal lawmakers believe Congress has become with respect to nationwide marijuana reform, there seems to be less evidence of this everyday. The latest bungle comes at the hands of a congressional conference committee and shows nothing but ill intent toward U.S. military veterans.

Earlier this week, a panel connected to the U.S House of Representatives eliminated a temporary provision tucked inside a budget proposal for U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs designed to give its doctors the right to recommend medical marijuana to their patients.

The concept of allowing veterans access to medical marijuana in states where it is legal has been a hot topic of discussion as of late. It is one that has been tried and failed through the legislative grind year after year, even after the issue gains some initial traction.

But 2018 looked like it could be the session to get it done. After all, more Republicans, many of which opposed cannabis in the past, are now starting to embrace the idea of legal weed. Unfortunately, none of them seem to be the ones with any power or influence.

Over the summer, the Senate approved the bill almost unanimously. It only need concurrence from the House to be included in the VA funding for Fiscal Year 2019 – making it the first time ever VA doctors were legally able to discuss cannabis treatments as part of their patients’ overall health care plans. But House Republicans were not having it. The committee did not even allow the issue to be put up to a vote. It simply scratched the provision from the proposal before moving it forward.

Some of the same lawmakers who have tried to convince the public that opinions toward marijuana are rapidly changing on Capitol Hill seemed surprised by the House committee’s decision to turn their backs on the men and women who have served the nation at times of war.

“Denying veterans the care they need by the doctors they trust is shameful,” Representative Earl Blumenauer of Oregon said in a statement.

“The Senate passed this amendment. It has broad bipartisan support in the House. This should have been a no brainer,” he added. “Yet, Republican leadership has once again stymied progress toward fair and equal treatment for our veterans. Their continued neglect of commonsense and the will of the American people is a disgrace.”

Two years ago, similar language was well received by both chambers, but an independent panel ultimately removed the provision from the bill. The consensus seems to be that as long as marijuana is illegal at the federal level, Uncle Sam (or at least his Republican controls) is not about to allow American soldiers to use cannabis, even if it is for medicinal purposes.

But more permanent legislation is needed anyway. There was a bill introduced last week aimed at giving veterans access to medical marijuana, but will likely to be met with the same level of resistance. Congressional leadership still adamantly opposes all things marijuana.

Of course, the blatant disregard for vets and their freedom have serious conversations with their doctors about cannabis medicine has advocacy groups up in arms.

“This decision of Republican leaders flies in the face of science, compassion, and overwhelming public support,” reads a statement from the Veterans Cannabis Coalition. “The Republican conference has steadfastly voted to send millions of other people’s sons and daughters to fight in endless wars while fighting tooth-and-nail to prevent the study of something that provides relief and healing to those injured in military service. Leadership can’t claim to care about veterans health and well-being while refusing to even discuss cannabis. Enough hypocrisy. We call on House Republicans to listen to the literally tens of thousands of veterans who have benefited from cannabis access, negotiate in good faith, and allow votes to take place.”

CBD Is Entering The Mainstream Through Beauty Products

Cannabis is breaching dams left and right in the world of consumers, and beauty products may be the latest stream to flood the valleys of anxious buyers. Cannabis infused beauty products are a growing segment of both respective industries, and this is very much due to the rapid dissemination of CBD efficacy studies and premium brands’ marketing techniques.

Once relegated to a single case in the dispensary and black market formulations from eager, brilliant people, CBD infused beauty in particular has finally landed squarely in the sights of the everyday beauty consumer. It’s only a matter of time before L’Oreal drops a line at the drugstore, you can already find Ouai CBD Scalp Scrub at Sephora. From Milk Makeup’s Kush Fiber Eyebrow Gel to celebrity endorsed body creams, it’s all happening.

JULIA ROBERTS SLAMS NEGATIVE COMMENTER WHO INSULTED HER ‘UGLY BLACK NAIL POLISH’

Big mistake, huge.

The 50-year-old actress was featured on a vintage fashion account for her stunning black gown at the Toronto International Film Festival, which compared her look to that of Joan Crawford.

One commenter wrote, “Joan Crawford looks way better in my opinion more classic and refined and Julia is wearing ugly black nail polish!”

Roberts didn’t let the comment slide, writing back, “@anniemagic11 It is in fact a navy polish with garnets crystals as a grounding accent. In case you would like to edit your comment from ‘ugly black nail polish’ to ugly navy polish with Garnet crystals. Just sayin’.”

KENDALL JENNER ‘RIPPED INTO’ CAITLYN JENNER FOR ‘TURNING HER BACK ON THE FAMILY’

Kendall Jenner was seen “ripping Caitlyn Jenner a new one” during a tense argument at Nobu Malibu, a source told Page Six. The top model and her parent Caitlyn were spotted out for a casual dinner, but a source said that inside the restaurant, things were heated.

“They were arguing . . . It was more Kendall ripping Caitlyn a new one for ‘always turning her back on the family’ after they’ve been so good to her.”

It’s unclear what the row was about, and a rep for Kendall insisted, when reached for comment, “This is absolutely untrue.” Caitlyn’s rep did not get back to us. A source said that the reality stars were sitting near members of the Schwarzenegger clan.

People mag recently reported that these days, after years of tension, Kendall’s mom, Kris Jenner, and Caitlyn “interact when they have to for the kids.”

Now You Know: 5 Hidden Tricks On Your Android Device

0

While the iPhone tends to eclipse Android devices, the latter — designed by Google — is the most common in the world and is also extremely versatile and capable of personalization. Android devices have millions of features that vary slightly by maker, yet still maintain their core functionality. Popular Science compiled a list with tons of different and handy Android features. Here are five of our favorites:

Run apps side by side

https://giphy.com/gifs/P7PmvHY6kzAqY

Running two apps side by side is one of the reasons why some users prefer an Android device over the iPhone. The chance to have different apps open at the same time is something that’s very reminiscent of a computer, and it’s useful for specific situations, such as fact checking, multitasking, and showing off to your friends.

To split your phone’s screen, tap the Overview button (the square icon below the screen) which will show you your recently used apps. Drag the app you want to have to one side or the top of the screen and then choose another app.

Manipulate volume settings independently

https://giphy.com/gifs/cartoon-90s-yelling-vLASJ6hzSBRBu

There are different types of audio: ring tones, notifications, alarms, etc. If you head over to the Settings menu and access Sounds, you’ll see an individual slider that allows you to adjust each one. In order to do this faster, tap and hold the Volume button shortcut. This will show you the different audio options, allowing you to customize each.

Lock your phone screen temporarily in one app

https://giphy.com/gifs/GH8jdEb1kPUk

Pinning your screen allows you to hand your phone to someone without worrying about them snooping. When you “pin” an app to your screen, the person using your phone will only be able to access that app because your phone will request your security pin in order to return to your home screen.

To pin an app on your screen, open your Settings and enter your Security menu. There you can enable Screen pining. Once that is done, launch the app you want to pin and tap on the Overview button. There should be a pin symbol, which will keep the app running.

Disable lock screen at home

Google’s Smart Lock feature allows you to disable your phone’s security measures once you’re home or in a trusted place. To enable this feature, head over to Settings and then to Smart Lock. On this screen you can also disable your lock-screen when your phone is connected to Bluetooth, making it easier to listen to music while driving or when connected to a speaker.

One hand mode

If you own a Google or a Nexus device, the one hand keyboard is your default. For all other devices, you have to download the Google keyboard first. To enable this feature, open your keyboard and press the backslash key. Drag your finger up to the right-hand icon to enable one hand mode. Once this keyboard is activated, you’ll be able to move it around and adjust its size.

NYC Could Scrub 40 Years Of Misdemeanor Marijuana Warrants

New York has been slow moving on passing progressive cannabis legislation the past few years, but it has recently stepped up its game and the city and state have made some monumental strides. In a telling example, it is expected that Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance is getting ready to announce that his office will vacate misdemeanor cannabis warrants dating back to 1978.

In Brooklyn, the D.A. is taking it a step further, offering to vacate low level cannabis convictions, along with the dismissal of underlying charges. These D.A.’s are making historical moves that will literally change lives. Having a warrant or conviction for cannabis, no matter how low level it may be, can mean losing the ability to receive student loans, get a job or even feel comfortable approaching law enforcement for help, fearing prosecution.

It is estimated that in Brooklyn, the records of around 20,000 citizens would be cleaned and ready for a fresh start. The Brooklyn D.A. will also vacate 3,438 warrants at the same time. There is a larger conversation at play however, and that is of a unifying law that would legalize New York as a whole.

As the gubernatorial debate wages on between current Gov. Cuomo and primary candidate Cynthia Nixon, it seems that there is a race to be the most pro-cannabis, with Gov. Cuomo already talking about legalization, going so far as to proactively set up an active group to draft a marijuana legalization bill. Nixon has made her pro-legalization stance clear.

Returning to the happenings in two of NYC’s burroughs, experts in fields ranging from defense attorneys to academics have praised the new initiatives, saying that they are, “a step in the right direction.”

Justine Luongo, the chief of Legal Aid’s criminal defense practice, told the New York Times, “The recognition is that this has to stop. Marijuana is not an issue that should be criminalized.” The executive director of Brooklyn Defender Services, Lisa Schreibersdorf said that Mr. Gonzalez’s decision to vacate convictions was “visionary.”

“It will save so many of our clients from deportation, loss of student loans, loss of housing, removal of their children and other very disproportionate outcomes that make no sense,” added Ms. Schreibersdorf. “Of course, New York should legalize marijuana, but in the meantime this is an incredible opportunity…”

Rapper Jim Jones Thoughts On The Weed Industry

While much of the buzz right now revolves around rumors of a new Dipset album, the rapper should feel excited about his business ventures outside of music. Rapper Jim Jones thoughts on weed industry we also top of mind. The Harlem artist recently served as a panelist at a SOURCE360 event titled, “Cannabis, Real Business: Learn About The Cannabis Industry.”

Jones talked about why so many nontraditional investors and businesses are eager to find a spot in the cannabis industry. He also debunked long-held stereotypes about rappers, business, and marijuana, indicating that artists aren’t just “users and abusers of the herb,” according to The Source. But he also warned against the breathless praise that marijuana can receive as alternative medicine and solution to the systemic addiction problems coursing through popular culture.

“Marijuana is a drug at the end of the day,” Jones told The Source. “It might not be the most destructive drug. I think statistically alcohol is the worst addictive drug that you can get involved with but let’s not forget the marijuana is a drug and anything you do too much of becomes an addiction and no addiction is good.”

Kassandra Freqerique, New York State Director at the Drug Policy Alliance, responded to Jones’ comments, indicating that the issue contains multitudes.

“Drug use is on a spectrum,” Freqerique said. “There are people that experiment, there are people that use, and there are people who have problematic relationships with drugs.”

But Jones also sat down for an interview with Black Enterprise to discuss the green rush and why now is the time to enter the cannabis industry.

“Weed business is like the gold rush,” Jones said. “While the doors are open for people to get in — it’s relatively easy now — but the doors are open for you to get in. I’m lucky that I did get in because it won’t be open that long. I’m glad I’m part of the club.”

Last month, TMZ reported that Jim Jones was charged with possession of drugs, including marijuana, and firearm possession. Cops in Georgia — a state notorious for rappers getting busted on marijuana charges — claimed they had to engage in a high-speed chase with Jones and his driver following a routine traffic stop. Law enforcement allegedly found marijuana, vape cartridges, THC oil, two loaded pistols, Percocet, oxycodone, and a large stash of “petty cash.” Jones was released on a $7,000 bail.

Marijuana May Be The Hero Psoriasis Patients Need

Psoriasis, an autoimmune disease that causes itchy, red scale to appear on the skin, is no stranger to the three million people who suffer from it. While itchiness is the most common symptom, in many cases patients also experience painfully inflamed tendons as well joint stiffness.

Unfortunately, the condition remains incurable, but scientists are pointing to a likely remedy to make the disease less insufferable. That’s right, cannabis has some pretty awesome effects on psoriasis.

In a 2007 study researchers concluded that cannabinoids can inhibit the buildup of dead skin cells and other symptoms of psoriasis. The study, which was published in the Journal of Dermatological Science, used different types of cannabinoids including, THC (cannabis most psychoactive component), CBD (one of cannabis’ least active ingredients) and cannabinol and cannabigerol (other cannabis’ compounds) – all of which were used to examine cannabis’ anti-inflammatory effects.

Researchers concluded, “The cannabinoids tested all inhibited keratinocyte proliferation in a concentration-dependent manner.” In other words, the four different cannabinoids they tested were all able to block the buildup of dead skin.

Why does this matter? Well, psoriasis is, essentially, the rapid accumulation of dead skin cells on the surface of the epidermis. So cannabis’ ability to stop that accumulation is a win, for people battling the inherited disease.

In a not so formal study, researchers at Gwynedd Cannabis Club in Wales, conducted a nine day experiment in which they treated one subject with acute psoriasis, using cannabis oil. Prior to the experiment, the subject had been using a chemotherapy drug called Methotrexate, known to treat rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis.

However, the side effects of the drug included fever, diarrhea and increased the chance of infection.

During the nine day study, the subject was given three doses of topical daily, for nine. Following the treatment, the subject reported no adverse side effects and even noted how she was able to go swimming with her family, which is something she had been limited in doing, due to her psoriasis.

Now, while this study is majority anecdotal, it still serves as another example of cannabis’ healing powers for people with psoriasis – especially in cases where conventional pharmaceuticals can’t seem to get it right.
