Canada May Become The New Leaders In Cannabis Research

0

While cannabis users anticipate recreational cannabis legalization efforts, one of the most promising aspects of such legalization involves research. Because marijuana is classified as a Schedule I drug, American scientists receive no federal funding and harsh restrictions when it comes to marijuana research. In other words, they operate with two hands tied behind their back.

That’s why scientists interested in cannabis research eagerly await Canada legalizing recreational marijuana. Though legislation has been delayed from its initial schedule this summer, the government still plans to unveil a system for recreational marijuana laws and sales in 2018. According to WIRED UK, this has everyone from academic researchers, investment firms, think tanks, and the cannabis industry itself excited about the possibilities once Canada goes fully operational. Why? One word: data.

With a population of 36 million people, Canada has the potential to become a hotbed for scientific studies related to cannabis. Researchers will finally be able to test with control groups and lab settings on a scale that isn’t currently possible thanks to government restrictions across the globe.

“Canada has an important opportunity to become leaders in the area of cannabis research,” Jason Busse, co-director of the Michael G. DeGroote Centre for Medicinal Cannabis Research at Hamilton, Ontario’s McMaster University, told WIRED UK. “There’s a lot of interest in what’s happening here from researchers and producers in other countries.”

Via WIRED UK:

There’s almost no limit on the kind of data that will be gathered, either. When the information floodgates open, researchers from all fields—health, criminology, policy, economy and more—will be able to collect information they weren’t able to get before. Patricia Erikson, a sociologist at the University of Toronto, is particularly excited about the ability to conduct longitudinal studies, which is when researchers follow the same people year after year.

These types of studies, which can give researchers insights into the long-term impacts of cannabis use, have been difficult to do. Only one major cannabis-related longitudinal study has been done in the UK. But most people don’t want to share their drug consumption habits more than once, if at all. Ethical issues and a lack of funding have hampered research, too. “What we’re really missing in Canada is a really good study of users,” says Erickson.

We’ve mentioned this before, but most concerns politicians and pundits espouse against widespread cannabis legalization can usually be answered by good science and research. That’s why government agencies, scientists, and data analysts alike will have a keen eye toward Canada over the next few years as unprecedented cannabis research trickles out. So whenever Canadian residents and visitors toke up, just remember—it’s in the name of science.

WATCH: This Woman Put Her Face Full Of Make-Up Under A Microscope

Beauty vlogger Tina Yong wants you to see what’s really happening on your skin when you wear make-up. The result, while not the worst thing you’ve ever seen, certainly isn’t…cute. Yong proved this point by posting a video of her made up face under a handheld microscope that has 1,000 times zoom. And who doesn’t want to see that?

After showing before and after closeups of her chin, forehead, eyelashes, etc., the results are obvious: From afar, make-up looks great. Close-up, especially on hair (brows, lashes), the results looked greasy, clogged and caked-on. “Oh, my lord. I have little spiders for eyelashes” is not something you ever want to hear, let alone utter. But Yong, who has more than two million YouTube subscribers, is very honest with her viewers. She even uncovers a very graphic looking pimple that is nearly invisible to the naked eye.

Watch Yong’s video below. Your next make-up application won’t be quite the same.

And if you need more extreme close-ups (we realize the addiction quotient here), Yong also has a video where she puts a microscope up to her skin before and after applying a blackhead mask.

Texans Urging Republicans To Expand Medical Marijuana Access

With the midterm elections fast approaching, politicians have hit the campaign trail. Many key battles are being waged throughout the country, and we’re seeing cannabis emerge as a significant platform issue. That includes Florida’s gubernatorial race, where Democratic candidates one-up each another over who supports marijuana more, and in Texas, where Democrat Beto O’Rourke must defend his pro-cannabis legalization position against incumbent Ted Cruz for the state’s senate seat.

In recent months, Texas has also seen marijuana become a major political talking point across parties, according to the Star-Telegram. Technically speaking, the state has a medical marijuana program. But it’s the most restricted legislation that exists in any state that has legalized medical marijuana. Under the Compassionate Use Act, patients with intractable epilepsy, and who haven’t responded to other types of traditional medicine, qualify to use low-THC cannabinoid oil for treatment.

At the Republican State Convention this month, we’ve seen activists try to persuade Republicans to expand access to medical marijuana and hemp, including the Texans for Responsible Marijuana Policy hosting a pancake breakfast for the Republicans. These Texans are asking lawmakers to include more patient conditions into the legislation, like autism and other forms of epilepsy.

“Texas has a very narrow medical marijuana program,” Heather Fazio, coalition coordinator for Texans for Responsible Marijuana Policy, told the Star-Telegram. “Many delegates, just as many Texans, want to see it as more inclusive.”

A tough choice presents itself for parents who have children with those conditions: Either treat your children illegally with the medicine that works or leave the state. The latter works, if you’re willing to uproot your life to Colorado or Washington, but the former presents mixed results. We’ve seen a Georgia couple lose custody over their 15-year-old son after treating his seizures with marijuana. A few months ago, we also saw a Texas judge rule that parents who treated their daughter with severe autism using marijuana could remain her legal guardians now that she’s reached 18 years of age.

Parents shouldn’t need to take on such risks, argues activists. “There needs to be more options and there are so many people left out,” says one mother, who moved to Colorado to treat her son’s severe autism and epilepsy.

But not all are so keen on expanding the current system. Via the Star-Telegram:

Patricia Silva-Duran is telling delegates how addictive marijuana is, so much so that her 20-year-old daughter was hooked. Her daughter, Madeleine, is now headed to court-ordered rehabilitation because she couldn’t stay away from the drug she has used since she was 15. Silva-Duran, with Texans Against Legalizing Marijuana, said marijuana is much more addictive than it was in the past. “If it is legal, (Madeleine) would want to start using again,” Silva-Duran said. She pointed out that a 2017 National Academy of Sciences study indicates “marijuana is addictive and harmful.”

While cannabis addiction is serious and dangerous, it’s also extremely rare within individuals. We’re also severely lacking in our testing of physical cannabis addiction in human bodies as animal studies produce limited results due to a lack of cannabinoid receptors, which humans have.

10 Jobs That Pay $100K With Little Competition

Sometimes it seems that every job we apply for gets snatched up in a matter of hours. Even the ones that don’t come with great pay go quick when competitive company culture and benefits are on the table. But then there are those jobs that not only pay above six-figures, there is little competition to snag them. What is this sorcery? And more importantly, where do we find the gatekeeper?

Glassdoor put together a list of 10 of these types of jobs where, according to Glassdoor’s Economics Research Analyst Amanda Stansell, there is at least one job for every job seeker, per job title. Says Stansell:

While competition is lowest among medical positions requiring advanced degrees, there is still more than one job per job seeker searching for nurse practitioner and physician assistant roles.

Runner’s High: Cannabis-Infused Jogging Club In Denver

You know that tired trope about lazy stoners, couch-locked and eating sleeves of Oreos while watching SpongeBob SquarePants reruns? Please, for the love of God, put that in the dustbin of history. More and more cannabis consumers are marrying their love for herb with exercise.

A new club in Denver is taking this concept to a new level. The Runner’s High Run Club, as the group bills itself, will begin a weekly fun run beginning at the Native Roots Highlands.

“We’re really excited to create a new community for cannabis enthusiasts and runners to unite,” Stratos’ Kate Heckman said in a statement. “Whether it’s applying a cannabis salve to sore muscles, relaxing with cannabis after a run or using CBD to decrease inflammation after a long workout, cannabis can support athletic training in so many ways.”

According to the club’s Eventbrite posting:

Runner’s High Run Club is a first-of-its-kind club that will unite cannabis enthusiasts and runners. The club offers two routes to choose from: the Sativa route, 4.20 miles in length, and the Hybrid route, 2.10 miles in length.

Each week, participants will receive special offers from run club organizers, Stratos and Native Roots, and each run concludes with a post-run celebration with special discounts from Highland Tap and Burger.

For each completed run in the summer series, participants will receive exclusive day-of discounts from Stratos or Native Roots and a stamp in their Runner’s High Run Club log to earn prizes, discounted products, and special recognition for miles logged.

The Runner’s High Run Club will meet weekly every Thursday through the summer/fall, weather permitting.

The club makes it clear that “no public consumption of cannabis” is allowed during the event.

“Native Roots has a large number of patients and customers who maximize their workouts with cannabis, and we are thrilled to be able to offer an opportunity to bring them together with this run club,” says Sarah Larson, associate director of retail operations for Native Roots.

Quadron Cannatech Sells First High-Tech Mobile Extraction Module

0

TLC Botanicals in Langley, B.C. purchased Quadron Cannatech’s first mobile extraction module recently and the new machine is set to revolutionize how pen extractions are done. Quadron’s units are “state-of-the-art modular, self-contained and fully portable extraction and processing laborator[ies],” according to a statement put out by the company.

A self-proclaimed holistic, family-oriented operation, TLC Botanicals provide medical cannabis to First Nation and conventional patients alike. They will be providing the extracts and pens to approved patients in Canada under the Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations (ACMPR).

The machine will be a dream come true for TLC and those to follow. Compact, portable and not to mention that it comes fully operational, these extraction modules are in line with the growth of the industry, where portable rosin presses have made a rise in the last few years and automated cannabis growing machines are becoming more popular, effective and affordable.

It also follows the trend of technology and industrial innovation that is booming in general. As we consider how to make things better, we look for efficiency, ease, earth safe practices and practical considerations such as affordability. Though the average citizen will not likely be buying a mobile extraction module anytime soon, it will quickly become a viable option for smaller businesses that want to make their own cartridges if it isn’t already.

Rosy Mondin, CEO of Quadron stated, “Through innovative engineering, and by leveraging our extraction and processing knowledge and expertise, we’ve designed a turn-key, drop in place, fully-functioning extraction environment. The end-result is a processing solution that serves a growing demand within the cannabis industry, enabling participants to process plants for terpenes and other cannabis compounds in a safe and professional setting.”

This extraction method is thought to not only be much safer than CO2 extractions, but healthier and more flavor-rich experiences. And you know the old saying, if you want something done right… Well making extractions in this type of controlled setting isn’t just safer, it gives you the control over the quality and potency of product, and that’s something to be proud of in the end game.

How Ben Jealous And Dave Chappelle Are Fighting For Weed Legalization

If the name Benjamin Jealous doesn’t ring a bell, he was originally known as Dave Chappelle’s bodyguard and god-brother, and served as the President and CEO of the NAACP from 2008-12 — the youngest person to ever fill the position. Now, he’s running for Maryland governor and is very serious about legalizing marijuana. Polls indicate Jealous has a slight lead over fellow Democratic nominees ahead of the June 26 primaries.

But Jealous recently revealed to Marijuana Moment how an early conversation with Chappelle shaped his views on marijuana legalization.

Via Marijuana Moment:

We were young and we were 20 years old in Mississippi. And Dave had come down there. I was organizing to stop a governor from turning a black college into a prison, and I was stressed out because Dave wanted to fire up a joint, and I didn’t want to go to jail in Mississippi. Dave was like ‘well, this shit should be legal,’ and I was like, ‘yeah, but it’s not.’ That was basically the conversation.

And then it was just an ongoing conversation about the history of marijuana enforcement—the way it was targeted at our community and Latino communities, and that just sort of opened my eyes. And that led me as president of the NAACP pushing for decriminalization in a number of states and cities. That’s ultimately where that conversation led. Dave was the one who really first talked to me about the way in which marijuana enforcement had been targeted at our communities. It just so happened that that day in Mississippi, the stakes were so high, I wasn’t really having it.

Jealous also hasn’t been shy about utilizing celebrity supporters on the campaign trail. In fact, he’s recently turned to Chappelle to appear beside him during TV interviews. While discussing marijuana on MSNBC, Chappelle added his positions on federally legalizing marijuana.

“I look at the legalization of marijuana as an inevitability nationally, not just in the state of Maryland,” Chappelle said. “I’m sure there is a gross disparity in the enforcement of drug laws in general in the United States.”

You can read the entirety of Marijuana Moment’s interview with Jealous regarding marijuana legalization and laws here.

Bark-Based CBD Cafe Opens Oregon

Portland, never one to be left behind when it comes to opening new coffee shops, is the proud recipient of its very first CBD cafe.

Grön (pronounced ‘Groon’), which has been making edibles for three years, is  now serving hot drinks, caramel sauces and chocolate containing non-cannabis based CBD. Instead, the CBD they use in their products is extracted from citrus peels and the bark of trees in Southeast Asia. That means state regulators have no jurisdiction over their sales.

“We’re able to actually go out to the public with this product because it’s not from cannabis or hemp. We can do public medicated samples and people can try it for themselves,” James Sharinghousen, Gron’s event coordinator, told KATU TV.

It also means they have a good chance of attracting new customers who would otherwise be too afraid of the stigma of pot.

According to KATU, the Oregon Liquor Control Commission has no plans to try and regulate the cafe, though, according to Grön’s operations manager, Jenna Rice, “That’s not to say somebody couldn’t come in tomorrow and tell us something different. We’re definitely aware that could happen.”

Most state-regulated shops selling CBD have a 21 and over age restriction, but Grön allows everyone, so says Green Rush Daily, which adds:

And while it’s unclear whether or not Grön’s bark-based CBD contains the exact same clinically-studied effects as regular CBD, owner Christine Smith does claim there is a small difference—she says her CBD has effects similar to aspirin. She feels like it makes her energetic but not sleepy.

As KATU reports, Oregonians could soon see more CBD products as the OLCC is expected to adopt some new rules over the summer pertaining to growing CBD-rich hemp.

Meme Of The Week: ‘The Most Successful People I’ve Ever Met’

Success is a hard thing to measure. The term usually brings up images of inventors or billionaires who run amazing businesses and have conquered all of their dreams; at least, to the eyes of the world. Success is something that everyone aspires to have, and for that reason there are millions of self help books that try to get people to that point, claiming that these are the definitive traits that all successful people have.

Then there’s social media, where, for some strange reason, people love to give out advice on how to be great and  achieve your dreams and glory, no matter your credentials.

This tweet from Twitter user Pomp – let’s try to avoid commenting on the handle – has become a big meme, because his advice on being successful is kind of dumb but mostly hilarious.

Pomp claims that successful people “have laser focus,” and “constantly work to improve,” which might be true, but is also incredible vague and not helpful. The post has produced over 6,000 retweets and 1,000 comments. Most of these are memes.

While some users took the route of proving why this advice is wrong by starting a fight, others decided to be more fun, taking the first part of the tweet and adding random things such as the lyrics to a song or parts of a movie that prove that success is mostly random. Also, that this is the Internet and nothing should be taken this seriously. Check out some of the best reactions:

This American Cafe Just Debuted CBD-Infused Ice Cream

Yet another sign of the times, now cannabis is making its way into ice cream shops. It’s not the biggest leap; cannabis infused ice cream has been around for a long time, but having it at a mainstream hotspot in Ashville, North Carolina is a true tell. Marijuana is simply part of our culture now, all the way to down-home, local sweets.

Hop Ice Cream Cafe is set to debut the CBD oil infused ice cream on June 29, during a wellness night being held at the creamery. It will be available in all three of their locations and the owners are pretty excited about it.

“We actually steep the hemp flower buds in the ice cream, and it does give it a little bit of the, like, dank hempy smell and flavor. But it’s really delicious,” Ashley Garrison, co-owner of the shop along with Greg Garrison, told WLOS.

Aside from the anti-anxiety, anti-inflammatory, pain reducing properties of the CBD found in the very low-THC hemp plants, because the two are using CBD oil in particular, made with premium ingredients, good fats, antioxidants and minerals are in the mix, making this one dish of ice cream that has absolutely no regrets.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bjz4FfLhcDf/?taken-by=hopicecream

CBD has gained enormous popularity over the last several years and is being infused into everything from the Garrisons’ ice cream to gourmet coffees to popcorn and pretty much anything that is able to be infiltrated. Because CBD on its own is legal to possess and distribute as long as it has less than three percent THC along with it, it is available across the U.S. and is the only cannabinoid option for people living in states that are still under the laws of prohibition.

Ice cream infused with CBD is an innovative way to get some medicine into your body in a flavorful, refreshing way. It may be just the thing to quell any afternoon anxieties. But it is important to remember that CBD seems to work best when combined with a slightly higher amount of THC. The cannabis plant itself, in most cases, is a holistic healer with all of its moving parts working in conjunction with one another.

Our bodies are literally riddled with cannabinoid receptors just waiting to eat up whatever cannabinoids you’re able to feed them, though, and if there were a CBD ice cream cafe on my corner, I’d certainly be there for the release, and likely be back often and gratefully.
