You’re Gonna Need It: 5 Wines To Get You Through Thanksgiving Alive

Everyone knows alcohol helps pass the time spent with less-than-kindred kin during the holiday season. If bird is the word, that dried-out turkey might need some liquid support as much as you do. With mandatory imbibing in mind, we discuss different tactics involving wine to get over obstacles, emotional and physical, such as how to avoid unnecessary tableside political conversations and restroom getaway routes — all by way of holiday wine selections.

Holiday Hustle: Drink Supplier To Distant Relatives

Partner in Wine: Cheap wine

Chances are you might not know your cousin’s husband’s brother-in-law who will be sitting at the 20-person-wide communal table this holiday, but chances are better that he doesn’t know you or your drink taste.

Shop the discount section at large grocers — Kroger stores are notorious for marking down bottles that do not sell well, many of which might be insane deals if you look close enough. Or, instead of skimming the bottle shelf for dwellers even your stingy uncle knows is cheap, look one row up and select a teeth-staining, full-bodied Argentine Malbec for $7 instead.

Holiday Hustle: The Amiable Partisan

Partner in Wine: High ABV bottles

No amount of wine can change the results of this election, but it can help to tune out the amount of nonsense you have to take an ear-full of from a relative that might not have the same POV as you. The aforementioned Malbec can do the trick if it’s coming from hot enough grape-growing regions but Zinfandel is a sure bet — anything from California’s wicked hot Lodi region will see alcohol by volume (ABV) percentages in the high 15s, 16s and even 17 percentiles. Just maybe avoid talking about the reason why that region is so hot in the first place…

Holiday Hustle: The Conversation Starter

Partner in Wine: Striking packaging

“Yes, Grandma, that is a naked woman on the label and no, she is not a friend of mine.” Stuck in an empty tête-à-tête with an in-law? Grab the nearest bottle and start discussing the abject expressionism of bottle art. Learn up on what you are pouring in your glass so you can rattle off a car-rehearsed canned speech on what makes your bottle worth filling vacant airspace with.

Holiday Hustle: The Busy Bee

Partner in Wine: Mulled wine

via GIPHY

Sugar and spice and everything nice, you are way too busy in the kitchen seasoning your multi-step, slow-cooked mulled wine to converse with anyone you do not want to. Hovering over your mom’s crockpot, wooden ladle in hand with the hood fan blowing a sweet breeze into your face, you are also nearly hard of hearing in this position: an unappealing counterpart for a heart-to-heart-seeking relative.

Although most recipes really only require 20 minutes of “active” work, this recipe instructs for a watchful eye over a spices-stuffed cheesecloth bag and a splash of brandy for the win.

Holiday Hustle: The Bathroom Breaker

Partner in Wine: Large format bottles

via GIPHY

This social pardon requires commitment — from lingering around a large format container of purple drank to loitering around the restroom regardless of who went in there last. Large formats — aka box wine, a 1.5-liter bottle or bigger — will only hit your bladder as fast as you hit that bottle, but we all know what happens once you break the seal. Position yourself and your bottle/box close to the restroom for a quick and easy closure to an undesirable exchange.

How To Avoid Post Intimacy Cramps

0

Few things can bum you out more than getting a cramp after having intimacy. These muscle pains are very common and can be caused by a lot of things ranging from orgasms, your period, or a reaction to your partner’s semen. Here is how to avoid post intimacy cramps.

An occasional cramp is nothing to worry about since it’s a common issue which won’t disturb you much. The real problem occurs when cramps and stomach pains are a recurring part of your sex life, affecting the way you approach sex all together. These types of cramps can also be a symptom of a larger issue, like endometriosis, ovarian cysts, and more.

If you’re affected by cramps on a regular basis during sex and random times of the day, it’s best to consult a doctor and check if they aren’t a symptom of an underlying issue.

Janelle Luk, reproductive endocrinologist, says that women who suffer from recurring cramps should switch up their usual sex positions to alleviate the pressure on their cervix, which is what’s causing the cramps in the first place.

Wearing condoms

https://giphy.com/gifs/wetv-rap-reality-3o7aCYpPhpHxTATm5a

Some women are sensitive to prostaglandin, a hormone that’s present in semen. If you suspect that this is one of the reasons behind your cramps, you should try using a condom while having sex and see if you feel better.

Ibuprofen

You can also take some ibuprofen before you have sex, preparing your body in order to avoid the pain. Alyse Kelly-Jones, OB-GYN from North Carolina, recommends taking 800mg.

Heating pads or hot baths

If you get cramps, a hot bath can also help you relax and make you feel better. Deep breathing and relaxation exercises are also recommended in order to relax your muscles and help you get rid of the stomach cramps.

If they continue, you should reach out to medical professional and figure a path.

6 Best Ways To Include Marijuana This Thanksgiving

The best ways to chill on Thanksgiving!

This Thanksgiving muster up everything you’re thankful for and immerse yourself in gratitude by celebrating cannabis wins both during the midterms and the many legislative efforts in the works. You can also be thankful for whatever bounty of food lays before you, especially when said food is enhanced by cannabis. Here are 6 ways to include marijuana in your Thanksgiving celebration this year and every year.

Start Early, But Regulate

As this holiday is really all about food, it’s often a cannabis lover’s favorite time of the year. It’s the day to get serious about the munchies, so a wake and bake session is completely called for. But so is being on your toes to help out in the kitchen, and keeping up with conversations without looking like a stoner, especially if there is family there who buy into stigma. Use eye drops, sip some water and keep up. This is not a rookie holiday!

Vape The Day Through

https://giphy.com/gifs/tpain-t-pain-young-ma-26ni7lPfQ0zfI7sK4

Vaping, though plenty effective, is usually a mellower high than smoking or outright dabbing. Plus, vape pens look like e-cigs and even though you have nothing to be embarrassed about, being discreet could go a long way in keeping quips at bay from the stauncher relatives who grew up with the belief that weed is inherently bad. If you want to broach the topic, see the next tip.

Start A Conversation About Local Laws

https://giphy.com/gifs/heyarnold-hey-arnold-nicksplat-26FfjguMd1xo3TluM

Though politics at the table aren’t always welcome, they happen. Why not see what the climate is from the cousins to the grandparents by bringing up your state’s latest moves in the green wave that’s washing over the country. If you live in one of the states that has no medical law even, there’s guaranteed to be a NORML chapter somewhere that’s doing its best to steer things in the pro-cannabis direction. Read up and discuss.

Exit A Conversation About All Other Politics

If you’re halfway through eating and politics have taken a turn to the far left or right or whichever direction brings out your passionate side you have two choices, dive into the ring and help escalate the discourse or bring it down a notch if a relative whisperer or excuse yourself for a “bathroom break” and take a few hits off a pre-roll or vape pen outside. It will reset your own perspective and give you the deep breaths needed to not lose your cool.

A Pie For Some, A Pie For All

Whatever dish you’re making, from candied yams to stuffing to holiday pie, make two. Make one that’s infused with cannabis in amounts that equal 25-30 mg per generous helping. There’s already the tryptophan in turkey, so you don’t want anyone falling asleep, at least not until the meal is finished. Be sure that everyone knows which dish is which, that they are clearly labeled and that the medicated one is out of children’s reach.

Make Room For Dessert

Bringing tincture or a vape pen to the gathering is highly recommended for a variety of reasons, but one of the best uses is for during the shift between scarfing down a table full of food and eating the array of desserts made at home or brought by thoughtful guests. You might want to sample one of each or at least a few, so be sure to have a handy, fast acting way to ingest some munchie inducing cannabis between rounds.

Want To Keep Spiders Out Of Your House? Do This

0

Hate to break it to you, but you likely have company living in your house, especially now that the weather has turned chilly and spiders are looking for the warm comforts of home. Even if it’s yours.

But if living with 8-legged creatures who aren’t paying rent isn’t your cup of tea, there is a way to get rid of them that’s much safer than using a can of hairspray and a blowtorch.

Family Handyman suggests using something you may already have in your closet: moth balls! Don’t let the name fool you; these little nuggets ward off all sorts of pests, including spiders. Just make sure the moth balls are placed away from family members and pets, as moth balls aren’t exactly safe to consume. Here’s how it works, according to Family Handyman:

  1. Pinpoint some locations in your home where you’ve seen spiders. Attics, basements and crawl spaces are common locations.
  2. Grab a Mason jar and use a drill to put three or four holes into the jar’s lid.
  3. Take three moth balls and place them in the jar and close the lid tightly. Make sure to avoid contact with skin and eyes when handling moth balls. It’s best to wear gloves and don’t inhale the fumes.
  4. Make one jar for each area where spiders are a problem.
  5. Be sure all of the jars are tightly sealed and out of reach from children and pets.
  6. The effect of the moth balls should last up to six months.

On the flip side, entomologists suggest you trap and release any spider you find in your home, because they’re an important part of nature and our indoor ecosystem. According to Matt Bertone, Extension Associate in Entomology at North Carolina State University:

People like to think of their dwellings as safely insulated from the outside world, but many types of spiders can be found inside. Some are accidentally trapped, while others are short-term visitors. Some species even enjoy the great indoors, where they happily live out their lives and make more spiders. These arachnids are usually secretive, and almost all you meet are neither aggressive nor dangerous. And they may be providing services like eating pests – some even eat other spiders.

And let’s not forget: spiders are fellow organisms trying to make their way on this planet just like us.

Does Spending The Holidays Apart Doom A Relationship?

0

Most people choose to spend the holidays with their partners, especially when the relationship becomes serious and you’re deeply involved in each other’s lives. Still, there are some couples who choose to spend the holidays apart, with their respective families, parents, and grandparents.

Matt Lundquist, a psychotherapist and couples therapist, explains to Refinery 29 that while this decision is okay and up to the couple, the reasoning behind spending the holidays separately is worth analysis. He believes that some people consider the holidays as a time to spend with immediate family, not with the family that you’re planning to create. He also claims that some people don’t consider the holidays to be a big deal, and that they don’t mind being alone with their families.

The holidays are traditionally seen as a time when you can share traditions with your partner, strengthening the relationship. Lundquist explains that these memorable dates are moments that you’ll both be looking forward to — getting together with family and friends, and enhancing the intimacy between you.

The most important part about deciding to spend the holidays apart is understanding why you’re doing it and then figuring out the best way to explain it to your friends and family, developing the necessary patience to listen to their criticism or their innocent questions over a practice that’s still out of the norm.

Here’s How You Can Avoid Getting Sick During The Holiday Season

You’re not imagining things when you suspect that the holiday season makes you sick. The change in weather can affect us all, making us more susceptible to catching a particularly nasty cold. This time of  year is filled with a lot of emotions, festivities, and traveling, all of which don’t exactly encourage self-care. Exposing yourself to airports and large amounts of family members makes you prone to diseases, so being extra careful is important.

Check out these tips that’ll help you stay healthy and make the most out of the holiday season.

Get a flu shot

A flu shot is the easiest and most direct way of preventing a cold, especially if you get one ahead of time during the early fall. It takes two weeks for your body to build up immunity against the bacteria in the flu shot, so getting a shot as soon as possible is the most effective way of preventing colds.

Wash your hands

https://giphy.com/gifs/genius-lil-yachty-xUA7b2LIZKjS0QvgyY

Washing your hands may sound like a dumb suggestion but it really works, especially if you’re traveling and spending a lot of time outside your house. LiveScience recommends washing your hands for over 20 seconds, or singing the “Happy Birthday” song twice, scrubbing soap thoroughly through your fingers and palms.

Rest and stay active

https://giphy.com/gifs/kitty-big-bang-theory-sick-Dq8TGrWcjgFhe

I know, confusing, but it’s important to work out and to get enough sleep time in order for your body to have a strong immune system. According to Popular Science, your immune system does the majority of its work while you sleep, so prioritize that above all else if you start to feel under the weather. If after a good nap you still feel crappy, try to stay at home and eat soup and healthy veggies.

Drink alcohol carefully

https://giphy.com/gifs/wtf-obama-wth-pPhyAv5t9V8djyRFJH

This is the worst recommendation ever, especially during the holidays, but alcohol seriously increases the odds of getting sick. Alcohol dehydrates you, making your fever and cold symptoms even worse. Drinking a hot drink is best if you’re feeling a little down, making you feel comforted even if you’re not really helping our your body by consuming alcohol.

The best thing you can do is plan ahead. If you know you’re gonna be partying, start preparing a few weeks ahead of time and treat your body right.

Comfort food

Soups and warm foods won’t heal you instantly but they’ll make you feel better and also have anti-inflammatory properties. Hot drinks and soup can help loosen up the mucus and can also provide a nutritious meal. Veggies, fruits, and other healthy foods can also help boost your immune system.

Use antibiotics as a last resource

https://giphy.com/gifs/x4ODv8lp8bodO

Sadly, colds and flus can’t be treated with antibiotics – these kill bacteria and what you need is something that treats a virus. You should take antibiotics when you have a sinus infection or a steep throat, and you should check with your doctor in any case. In order to cure a common cold give your body a few days to fight it off or take cold medicine that can at least make you feel better.

UK’s First Cannabis Restaurant Opens Next Month

0

An upcoming cannabis restaurant is all the buzz around Brighton, England. The Canna Kitchen is planning to open December 1, specializing in vegetarian and vegan cuisine — all infused with cannabis oil.

Of course, nobody will get high off this food, as CBD is the non-psychoactive part of the plant. However, foods will also be infused with CBG (Cannabigerol), and CBN (Cannabinol), the latter of which is the only cannabinoid of the three with traces of THC. As Gizmodo so eloquently puts it: “The Canna Kitchen is only using the non-psychoactive branch of cannabis products, so the only highs on offer will be of the ketogenic kind in the heads of diners who’ve been avoiding carbohydrates all day.”

According to Canna Kitchen’s website, they’ll offer zaa’tar roast cauliflower with hemp heart tabbouleh, smoked aubergine, sesame cavolo nero and CBD tahini cream; buckwheat and beetroot pancake with roast roots, rocket and CBD cashew cheese; and…well, that’s all that’s listed on their online menu at this point.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BqKbybTDd9G/

According to their website, they want to ‘change the way people think about the cannabis plant’, adding:

Cannabis is a highly nutritious, versatile and powerful herb; it is packed full of flavour, fragrance and natural therapeutic benefit. We at The Canna Kitchen aim to redress dated stereotypes mislabeling this extraordinary natural resource purely as a recreational substance. Our food is contemporary and fresh, using locally sourced and organic produce wherever possible. We ensure any trace elements of THC, (the psychoactive compound found in cannabis), are within legal limits, rewriting the book on traditional canna infusion.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bp_onvFDasZ/

Canna Kitchen’s founder, Sam Evolution, told UNILAD:

I just want to do my bit to educate people… With the recent resurgence of cannabis and CBD in the press, its reclassification or acceptance as a medicine, I felt the time was right to do something that was a bit of a statement to get people to shift their thinking.

I’m very passionate about plant-based living and healthy eating, and I have some close connections to some very creative culinary masterchefs. The idea came quite a while ago, but I was waiting for the right time to push it forward.

The restaurant will also offer  a CBD Café and dispensary upstairs offering infused cakes, drinks and beverages.
