7 Ways To Discover Palm Springs Through Food And Drink

0

Back in the day, references to Palm Springs conjured up images of retired people, golf courses and cacti. These days, there’s a mix of youthful energy injected into this SoCal destination: an enclave of hipsters on bikes, beautiful people lazying around poolside and fashionistas/creatives dining al fresco. And now, the Obama’s are kicking it here too. Here are 7 recs that would have the former First Family not even missing the chefs and kitchen staff at The White House.

1) Get Your Brunch On At Cheeky’s

https://www.instagram.com/p/83MqkvItp2/?taken-by=cheekysps

The most powerful person in Palm Springs may very well be the host overseeing the wait list at Cheeky’s. Between 10am-noon, get ready to hang out with your brunch compatriots who are all waiting to eat Cheeky’s fluffy blueberry pancakes, chilaquiles with chorizo and weekly eggs benedict specials. Piggy lovers, try the $5 bacon flight that includes five strips of different varieties of bacon such as smoked, thai green curry and apple cinnamon.

2) Breakfast And Ping-Pong At Arrive Hotel

Arrive is one of the newest additions to Palm Spring’s collection of chic lodging. Regardless of whether you stay in one of their 32 guestrooms, all are welcome to dine at the hotel’s outdoor restaurant, Reservoir. Tres Leches pancakes and fried chicken & churros are faves. Post-breakfast, hit the outdoor ping pong tables to work off some calories before visiting the hotel’s onsite ice cream shop to treat yourself.

3) Kick It Old School At Tyler’s Burgers

https://www.instagram.com/p/BDdkkRtSsMW/?taken-at=235120538

In 1996, Diana DiAmico built a burger joint in a historic 1936 Spanish colonial structure that was at one point a gas station and later a greyhound bus stop. Back in the day, DiAmico’s mom ran a popular burger stand in Venice Beach, so DiAmico’s learned pretty early in life how to flip burgers. Many locals regard Tyler’s as the best burger in town. It’s often described as the perfect backyard barbecue burger. DiAmico still works there every day.

4) People-Watching And Proper Pool party, Mosey Over To Ace Hotel

When you need a break from the pool, King’s Highway has got your back. With a roadside diner feel overlaid with that signature Ace vibe, King’s is appropriately set in an old Denny’s. King’s works with local farmers and sourcers to serve SoCal favs such as a toasted farrow bowl and date shake made with local dates (they come from the neighboring Coachella Valley), almond milk and vanilla bean gelato. Bonus: there’s bingo on Monday nights!

5) Birba For Al Fresco Dining

https://www.instagram.com/p/BL6zaLeB32X/?taken-by=birbaps

If you like to dine outside, Palm Springs is your best buddy. Many locals think Birba, located next door to brunch hot spot Cheeky’s and run by the same owners, does it best. Surrounded by fichus trees dotted with white lights and fire pits, this intimate and modern setting is like hanging out at your interior designer friend’s garden patio. Italian is the genre with favorites such as the tricolore salad with fried garlic, aged parm and lemon and the bruschetta with local tomatoes, olive oil and basil. Chase it all down with a Pisco Sour or Greyhound.

6) Tiki Time At Bootlegger

This bad ass tiki bar, located behind a coffee shop and housed in the original 1950’s Don the Beachcomber restaurant, used to be a secret spot but awesomeness can’t stay incognito forever. The dim-lit three booths and 5-seater bar still makes this place feel like a laid-back speakeasy. For the record, these are not your cheesy tiki rum drinks. Proper mixologists tend the bar, making syrups and bitters from scratch. Fair warning, more than a couple of these honed concoctions and you’ll wonder if you can touch a Secret Serviceman’s gun.

7) Upscale Modern Dining At Workshop Kitchen

https://www.instagram.com/p/BPi4etEjpUd/?taken-by=workshopkitchenbar

Anyone who thinks Palm Springs is a food desert needs to visit this James Beard award-winning restaurant. Located in the heart of the Design district, people who’d pick modern austere minimalist over stuffy and pretentious will like the digs and atmosphere here. Workshop’s menu is market and season driven with winter dishes such as Kabocha squash + burrata and Duck leg confit with duck merguez sausage, de puy lentils and jus. For a romantic experience, sit outside.

Marijuana-Friendly RV Park Planned In Oregon

0

It’s the perfect marriage for the outdoorsy cannabis consumer: An RV park that will cater to campers who enjoy a toke or two around the campfire.

Grow Condos, an Oregon-based cannabis firm, announced on Monday its plans to build “Smoke On The Water,” a cannabis-friendly park for recreational vehicles.

“This is one of the most exciting ventures to date for our company,” said Wayne Zallen, CEO of Grow Condos. “The opportunity for this segment of the real-estate industry is potentially very advantageous and largely untapped. This year we expect significant growth through this subsidiary, as we build, launch, and brand one of Oregon’s next beautiful cannabis friendly destinations,” he added.

Grow Condos has entered into an agreement to acquire Lake Selmac Resort, located just 20 miles south of Grants Pass, Oregon and about two miles east of Highway 99 in the southern part of the state. Lake Selmac Resort features everything a camper would enjoy: fishing, swimming, boating, RV parking, tent camping and cabins. And, hopefully soon, marijuana.

Toking in national and state parks is still illegal, but Grow Condos believes that relaxed marijuana laws are indeed a powerful motivator for tourists, which “creates a very lucrative niche opportunity for smaller, privately owned properties that can offer the freedom of experiencing Oregon’s strikingly beautiful landscape while also allowing its visitors to enjoy Oregon’s 420 friendly privileges,” the company said in a statement.

Summer Fun! Marijuana-Friendly RV Park Planned In Oregon:

“More people than ever are choosing to come to Oregon, and they are traveling farther than ever to get here. They are coming to enjoy the things we love: natural beauty, wilderness, adventure, amazing fresh food, wine, craft beer, world-class sports, and a vibrant arts and culture community. The result of all these visitors is a long list of powerful statistics and measures that show the profound economic power of tourism in Oregon.”

Now that Oregon has made recreational cannabis legal, perhaps it will add its world-renown marijuana cultivation alongside the craft beer and wine.

In a recent survey done in Colorado, the following statistics were discovered:

“Potential summertime visitors who were exposed to the state’s tourism ads said the marijuana laws influenced vacation decisions almost 49 percent of the time.”

While Colorado’s tourism ad campaign does not mention marijuana, 22 percent of survey respondents said marijuana access was “extremely influential” in their decision to visit Colorado. Another 27 percent of Rocky Mountain High toursits said the herb positively influenced their decision in some way.

According to Zallen, the company is looking to expand its concept to other legal cannabis states. The innovative RV parks would a retail outlet, he said.

Coolest Tech-Savvy Wine Gadgets Of 2017

0

You always knew drinking was cool, but you probably didn’t expect that the kids from high school chemistry class or the beekeeping club would be showing you how to drink cool today. Courtesy of tech-savvy entrepreneurs who aimed their geek-powered creativity at alcohol enjoyment, technology has gotten a lot more mainstream in the world of wine. Here are some of the coolest tech-savvy wine gadgets of 2017.

Like Jeff Bezos at the Golden Globes, high-tech offerings in the wine community might stick out like a bald, sore thumb, but they are worth every penny to take your drink experience next level. Here are five devices to throw your leftover holiday money at to achieve faster, cleaner, longer-lasting and potentially better wine.

Aervana Electric Wine Aerator ($100)

It takes mere seconds for the world’s first electric wine aerator to push an entire bottle of wine through its battery-powered aeration system, achieving heightened aromas and flavors in moments, instead of hours. Better faster, its patented electric pneumatic process gives more air surface contact to the wine, ultimately speeding up the oxidation and allowing the wine to reach its optimal taste immediately. Waiting for wine to decant is so 2016.

Wine Squirrel Decanter ($70)

Unfinished wine bottles will no longer meet their fate in the sink drain with this wine preservation decanter. Created from a napkin sketch, the Wine Squirrel goes into action after decanting the wine, by inserting an airtight seal down to the level of the liquid, twisting and preserving the wine from air contact until you’re ready to drink it again — allegedly even up to a week later. Pre-orders are available now for this Kickstarter-funded gadget with an estimated March ship date.

Plum ($1,500)

Pick a bottle, any bottle. Natural or artificial cork and even screw cap, this motorized system will pierce the closure, pressurize the bottle with argon gas and extract the wine only when it’s ready to be consumed, in customizable serving sizes. For up to 90 days, the fully automated Plum will identify the wine and chill to its ideal serving temperature, with navigation displayed on a directional touchscreen, showcasing the labels and key info on the two separately chambered bottles it holds. In other words, white wine can be served frosty and red at ideal cellar temp from the same machine. For a kicker, Plum will ship a stunning Zalto wine glass with pre-orders for a limited time. Expect to see this cubical drink device shipping this spring.

Üllo Wine Purifier ($80)

Tired of hearing your mom complain about the sulfites in wine bothering her the next day (because it certainly isn’t due to the bottle she drained the night before)? Üllo’s Selective Sulfite Capture™ technology might be the solution, hitting the reset button and returning wine to its natural state. The purifier removes sulfites (the preservatives often added to wine) and any leftover sediment while also aiding as an adjustable aerator, all in a palm-sized, travel-friendly filter. Place the purifier on the top of a decanter or glass and pour the wine through to strip the juice of sulfites for a headache-free next day.

Rabbit Automatic Electric Corkscrew ($50)

https://www.instagram.com/p/BD4UJk9jHG7

It’s not lazy if science does it for you. Rabbit released the world’s first automatic electric corkscrew a few years back and like the wine itself, this just gets better with time. The latest edition requires minimal action on the drinker’s behalf, asking only for the corkscrew to be simply set on top of the bottle of choice where it will automatically cut the foil, remove and eject the cork, even without the extra step of pushing a button. The rechargeable opener can pop over 30 bottles of wine on a single bottle charge, in case you are very thirsty and extremely lazy.

We hope you enjoy the some of the coolest tech-savvy wine gadgets!

What Happens To Food That’s Made To Break World Records?

According to Guinness, by way of Today I Found Out, it’s the question they get asked the most:

What happens to all of that ginormous food that’s built specifically to get into the Guinness Book of World Records?

As of 2011, Guinness has upheld a policy that prohibits any food from being wasted. In order for a record to be recognized as official, all food — whether it’s the Worlds Largest Burger or the large number of pizzas consumed in 60 seconds — must be either donated, consumed or sold for consumption in order to prevent a large amount of food waste.

That means that the food being consumed has to be edible. Oh, that nearly 800 pound burger you created wasn’t fully cooked inside? Step aside and try again. (True story).

Another stipulation of making your world record stick: your food, no matter how giant, must still resemble the food you’re imitating. Take for example Snapple. They tried to build a record setting popsicle in New York in the midst of summer. Long story short: the popsicle melted, thousands of liters of melted goo created a small flood, and they were defeated.

Coconut-Orange Cannabis Vegan ‘Egg’ Cream Will Satisfy All Cravings

In some alternate reality, our grandparents could have parked at one of those 1950s pharmacy/soda shoppes and ordered this very drink, with cannabis and all. Instead, we have to recreate this lost art and speculate on what could have been. Hand mixed sodas are for more than mixing with cocktails. They’re standalone treats that create sensory experiences and memories.

Egg Creams and Creamsicles are two hugely popular lunch counter drinks. One day I mixed the two ideas and haven’t looked back since. An Egg Cream is like a creamy soda, usually done with vanilla syrup, milk, and seltzer or club soda, a New York classic. This is just one ingredient away from a Creamsicle which is vanilla, orange, and milk.

The coconut version of a traditional dairy Egg Cream was born when trying to create a ‘from scratch’ coconut rum and cola, on duty at a tiki bar. It’s many iterations, including this creamy treat came about for patrons looking to skip alcohol for a round. When I made it for myself I snuck in a shot of weed tincture. It’s a foamy, bubbly, naturally sweet, with a velvety flavor that you will want to revisit.

Coconut Egg Cream, Orange Creamsicle Variation

Danielle Guercio 2012

  • 8 oz Fresh Orange Juice
  • 1 can Coconut Milk
  • ½ cup Sugar
  • Vanilla Extract
  • 1 oz Cannabis Glycerin Tincture*
  • Seltzer
  • Ice

First, whip up some coconut cream by heating up one can of coconut cream with ½ cup sugar. Try not to overheat, simmer for 30 minutes until reduced. Remove from heat and stir in Vanilla and cannabis tincture. Put anything you don’t use in a squeeze bottle and refrigerate for coffee, cocktails, or on cereal, desserts, pancakes.

Photos by Danielle Guercio

To make Egg Cream:

Put 2 oz fresh orange juice and 1 oz coconut cream in a cocktail shaker, seal tins and dry shake. Crack open tins and add ice, shake again until outside of tin is frosty. Open tins and strain mixture over ice in a tall glass, top with soda, try to make as long of a pour as possible for extra foam. Garnish with an Orange Peel and straw.

Photos by Danielle Guercio

If you do want to add booze, I highly suggest something light like sake or soju. This way you won’t overpower the delicate flavor combo, and won’t interfere with the weed too much by downing a full serving of alcohol.

Something less spirituous like Nigori Sake you can use up to 3 oz, just shake with the juice/cream. White rum would be another good choice, but being stronger you’ll want to keep it at 1 oz max for optimal taste balance.

*To make Glycerin Cannabis tincture:

In an oven safe container double sealed with foil, decarboxylate 3.5 grams finely ground cannabis at 225 degrees Fahrenheit. Put cannabis in a mason jar or vacuum sealed bag, pour over 2 oz vegetable Glycerin and seal tightly. Place in a water bath at just under boiling for 1 hour. Strain and keep contents in a sterilized container. Stores indefinitely in freezer.

You will probably make at least two more of these, hence the batched coconut cream. Whether you keep it virgin or want to add a splash of strong, this will surprise you with it’s simple elegance. Orange needs a new reputation, so let’s make orange juice again.

The Fresh Toast NW Launch In Seattle

Not many people can decline a party invitation to help kick off a lifestyle/entertainment site with a side of cannabis. And while some likely expected deep fried mozzarella sticks and a big screen showing of Super Troopers on a loop, this was a classy affair.

Upwards of 250 guests (check out our Flickr album) were treated to Dry Soda Toasties, Glass Vodka martinis and specialty cocktails as they snacked on grilled PB&J, deviled eggs and a variety of other comfort foods provided by the Coterie Worklounge.

Editor-in-Chief Kelly Barbieri flew in from the NYC office for the event, as did our “Texas Bureau” (a.k.a. writer Brendan Bures, who’s located in Austin, TX).

The line-up of guests was impressive: Seattle City Attorney Peter Holmes; Robby London, writer and producer of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe; Former Patriot and Seahawks player Lawyer Milloy; Amy and Dan Nordstrom; Sean Miller, Managing Partner of Origins; Jody Hall of  Cupcake Royale and Goodship; former President of US Bank, Ken Kirkpatrick and his wife Sasa; cocktail and lifestyle guru Kathy Casey; MJBA founder David Rheins; chef Jonathan Zimmer; Lissa Gruman of Gruman PR; and Butter London founder Sasha Muir.

At the launch, Founder-Publisher JJ McKay announced The Fresh Toast syndication with Sun Valley’s Weekly Sun, Pioneer News Media, Seattle Magazine, WhiskeyWash.com, and The New Tropic. He also announced a content partnership with IndieFlix, where TFT readers will get a complimentary weekly show from the online streaming service.

(Interesting note: during the party, IndieFlix was actually filming an episode of their new mockumentary called Grow Op. Look for The Fresh Toast to be featured in an upcoming episode!)

Rebirth Trade ‘Son of Superman’ Is Great For Hardcore Fans And Newbies Alike

0

In the coming weeks, DC will be unleashing the first volumes of Rebirth trade paperbacks, and currently available is my favorite superhero’s book Superman: Son of Superman. Collecting the Superman Rebirth One Shot and issues Nos. 1-6, this book is well worth the price tag. It also presents an excellent jumping on point for new readers, or old readers that just couldn’t get into the New 52.

Starting with the Superman Rebirth One Shot, you get this great introduction of a Superman we’ve known forever. He’s old to us, but somewhat new to the current Prime Earth. He’s been hiding out, helping where he can in the shadows, while the younger Superman lives in the limelight. By showcasing his adventures with his family (wife Lois and son Jon) in the Superman: Lois and Clark book (we miss you Dean Cain), we get a personal glimpse into his life beyond the cape. However, the younger Superman is dead, and after meeting up with the New Earth’s Lana Lang, the older, more experienced Superman decides that to honor the fallen hero, he will don the red cape once more and become this world’s Superman.

Cover via DC Comics

He won’t be taking on this adventure alone though; Lois and Jon especially are huge parts of this book. Jon, being half Kryptonian and half human, is learning to control his powers with varying degrees of success. When a hawk attempts to scoop up Lois’s cat Goldie, Jon attempts to stop it by firing a blast of heat vision. He stops the hawk, but kills both it and Goldie in the process. Jon tries to hide this gaum from his parents, but Clark knew about Goldie’s fate. Following a scary visit from Batman and Wonder Woman, Clark and Jon take a trip up to the Arctic to rescue a Coast Guard submarine that’s been trapped in the ice. Moments after being freed, it is then attacked by a giant squid-like creature (this kind of stuff happens all the time in the Coast Guard—join up today!). Clark gives Jon the confidence to use his heat vision and assists him in defeating the creature.

But who was behind the creature’s attack? It was none other than an old 90’s Superman villain the Eradicator, making his Prime Earth debut! Superman and family run afoul of the Eradicator on a trip to the Fortress of Solitude. He senses Jon’s human DNA and wishes to eradicate it, in favor of his pure Kryptonian genome.

The Kents (alias: Smiths) are now on the run from the Eradicator. During a chase that leads them to the moon, they learn that Eradicator is powered by Kryptonian souls that he’s gobbled up over the years. Hiding out in Batman’s Lunar Batcave, The Eradicator catches up with them and swallows Superman. Lois dons the Hellbat armor and she and Jon fight Eradicator to a standstill. This gives Supes enough time to convince the souls trapped within Eradicator to hop inside his mouth for a change.

This depowers Eradicator and empower Supes. He escapes from the belly of the beast and pounds the bad guy into the lunar surface with a 10-megaton explosion. With Eradicator destroyed, Superman releases the Kryptonian souls out into the ether. Superman then properly introduces Jon to Batman and Wonder Woman. Batman is a little sour, due to the $10 billion repair bill on the Lunar Batcave. Still, Superman dubs Jon his Superboy and we get our happy ending.

With an excellent story by Peter J. Tomasi and Patrick Gleason, on top of the incredible artwork by Patrick Gleason and Doug Mahnke, this book makes for the perfect reintroduction of the Man of Steel. Action packed, but filled with great character moments that leave you with chill bumps, this is the Superman book we’ve been waiting for. Luckily, for fans, our wait is over.

Happy Birthday Beer Can! Crack Open A Cold One

0

In life, there are only a few sounds that just about everyone on the planet recognizes. They are as follows: the sound of a toilet flushing, the beeping sound of a big truck backing up and the opening of a fresh, cold can of beer.

You can picture it now, I bet. You can hear the crisp Pssshhhhhhhhhtttt! You can see the little bit of liquid splish-splash, dance mid-air and land on your fingers. At some point today (not at work, gosh!), take a can, look at it, admire it and OPEN IT to celebrate the 82nd birthday of the first canned beer going on sale this day in 1935.

In conjunction with the American Can Company, the Gottfried Krueger Brewing Company sent out 2,000 cans of beer to quaffers in Richmond, VA to a whopping 91% approval rating. Hey, that beer should have run for public office! Maybe there’s still time?

The warm welcome for the cold beer can inspired more production and now, according to Statistic Brain (and who wouldn’t trust them?!), 67 billion cans are consumed each year in the U.S. Or, to think of it another way, you could reach the moon 20 times over if you stacked all the beer cans consumed in America each year. Take that Neil Armstong!

So cheers to you, beer lover. And cheers to the beer can. You did it! No one ever thought you’d see 75 and now look at you, 82! Yay! Pssshhhhhhhhhtttt!

What You Need To Know About This Cat With A Dinosaur Haircut

0

In Maha Sarakham, Thailand, tons are cats are strolling around with haircuts that make them look like dinosaurs, if the owner of one pet grooming salon is to believed. A video posted to YouTube shows a cat with its sides shaved and ridges carved along its spine to make it appear like a stegosaurus.

“I’m the owner of a pet shop and groomers, this is one of the most fashionable cat hair styles,” the video’s poster wrote on YouTube.

While we can’t independently verify the owner’s claims, we like to imagine that it’s true and that there are thousands of dino-cats running around the streets of Maha Sarakham. We also hope the trend someday extends to dogs and other fury pets.

Beyond Baller: Take A Look Inside A Luxe $250 Million House

0

Ever wonder what a home that costs a quarter of a billion dollars look like? Well, now you can take a look inside of one thanks to Tri-Blend Media and Bloomberg.

The Bel Air mega-mansion is 38,000 square feet, and has 12 bedrooms, 21 baths, a 40-seat home theater, and a four-lane bowling alley. The property also includes millions of dollars worth of fancy cars, a deactivated helicopter used on a TV series in the 1980s, and 12 motorcycles.

“It just reeks of quality and looks absolutely spectacular,” developer Bruce Makowsky told Bloomberg. “It gives you the feeling you can only get if you go to heaven.”

The home’s art also reeks; the decorations include a chainsaw with its blade replaced with Rolls Royce hood ornaments, an onyx stone sculpture of an Hermès Birkin handbag, giant photos of Cher, jewel-encrusted guitars, a giant shiny replica of a Leica camera. There’s also something called a “champagne pinball machine,” a chrome-plated machine gun, and entire wall covered with candy dispensers.

“I just believe that if you build the very best, there will be a buyer,” Makowsky said.

“I understand how rich people want to live, because I’m very wealthy,” he added. “The right person is going to walk into this house and lose their mind.”
