Meet The Marijuana Couture Company Rihanna Adores

Meet the marijuana couture brand ASCHE Industries, a modern cannabis smoking accoutrement and small leather goods line born out of New York’s fashion scene. ASCHE’s owner and founder, Molly Kavanagh, is a former model leading the modern cannabis smoker in their quest to purchase accessories with style, design, and fashion not found at your typical smoke shop or bodega.

ASCHE’s products vary from highly functional pendants that double as grinders to a small collection of classic odor-free handbags. The brand has become the go-to cannabis couture of Rihanna and prides itself on being equal parts practical and fashionable. ASCHE recently debuted their new Summer Safari collection, which includes a ‘White Elephant’ scent-controlled pouchette and an 18K gold vermeil elephant roach clip with emeralds. A proceeds of the sales will be donated to the African Wildlife Foundation.

To learn more about ASCHE’s new collection and its company, I called up Kavanagh to learn how the business started and her views on the modern cannabis smoker.

How long did you have this idea for a luxury cannabis fashion line?
I’ve been a smoker for a very long time and it kind of just hit me 2014 Christmas time. It took me a couple years to develop the company and the product and all of that. I looked online and at the time there weren’t any other elevated companies providing any higher end accessories.

The bag came first, the scent-controlled pouchette. There just wasn’t anything me or any of my friends wanted to carry. We’d carry our pot in those little Mexican souvenir bags and it was like, “What are we doing here?” Then I started doing research on different technology and fabric and ways to block odor and combinations of all these things together. That took a really long time.

I was working with a designer that did accessories for Marc Jacobs and a few other major brands. We should help me on the side. We made some things and I would pass them out to my friends and different people and wear-test them. Make sure the bag works and all that. Everyone really wanted something super sleek to put in their bags or their backpockets.

How would you qualify that initial reaction to ASCHE versus to its bubbling popularity now where celebrities like Rihanna are wearing it?
It was a slow start because nobody wanted to talk about the industry or pot. No one wanted to admit they smoked it, really. Everybody did, they just didn’t want to say it. Of course when you’re with your friends, you talk about it and everyone is cool with it. But to other co-workers or whatever you didn’t want to talk about it.

When I first launched I couldn’t get a PR company at the time. It was really difficult. In the northeast we’re farther behind than the west coast [in terms of the stigma surrounding marijuana]. This one PR guy told me, “You don’t want to tell anyone this product is for cannabis. Just let them figure it out.” I was like, “What?”

Now there’s whole creative agencies geared to the cannabis industry and branding companies and this whole new wave of creative in cannabis. It’s unbelievably cool and really exciting because we’re just in the beginning of everything.

It’s funny because you hear stories of celebrities at the Oscars openly consuming and I think you identified a market that had just been sitting there for a long time. Can you speak on that?
I believe most artists whether they’re musicians or fashion designers…the creatives have been smoking forever. I think the celebrity status have a little bit of an issue admitting they’re users, but Rihanna has basically come out and said she doesn’t give a fuck, right? It’s allowed other people now to say I don’t care either.

They’re a few of the older generation still stuck on that idea of needing to be a bit conservative or they don’t want to say anything. The Susan Sarandon types. She’ll say she smokes occasionally, but it’s different from generation to generation.

I think for all creatives it’s another outlet for them to be open and to use it in their artwork. The cannabis ritual inspires them and gets them creative.

For you in your personal life did you see a mixed bag of reaction when you announced this was something you were pursuing?
[laughing] Yeah. Most people that I hang out with…I’ve been in the fashion business for 13 years and I would talk about the company and they would think it was really exciting. They couldn’t wait to see the next sample being made. But yeah, me telling my conservative family that are Republicans was interesting. That was a funny Thanksgiving topic. But everyone seems to be less concerned with it now and everyone’s really excited for it.

I’ve had a positive response for the most part, though.

Would you say your trend line has gone up in correlation with how public views and legislation have changed toward cannabis?
I do agree with that. Even though our legislation here in New York is behind, we are a fashion-forward city. Whether the cannabis industry likes it or not, it is fashion, it is on trend. New York pushes that forward, too, with fashion.

Who would you say your product is for and it is that going to change as you move forward?
I actually have a meeting with a company called Blunted Objects, which were collaborating and they’re at a more approachable price point. I like to be accessible to all ASCHE fans. You know, I have interns that want to be able to purchase the products. I do want to open up to a younger audience, but the majority of who I sell to are ages 25-60 and they’re mostly women. Or men buying for women.

I do sell a lot of the nickel-sized black bag to men. They use them as wallets and to carry their stash. It’s funny with the pricing because I’ve had people say they want it less expensive which—it’s made in America, it’s made in New York City, there’s’ really not a lot of room because of the quality and the materials that go into it. On the flip side I’ve been asked if they could get the whole entire key covered in diamonds. The safari collection I’m offering with emeralds or you can get crystals to make it a lower price point. But people want that higher end more so than the cheaper foreign company.

So you’re not fast fashion basically.
No, I’d say we’re quite the opposite. We’re more slow fashion [laughing].

Your business is part of this bubbling movement of luxury cannabis products and I’m wondering as we see more of this stuff and you guys produce different types of products, do you ultimately believe this will help usher a more legitimate move of cannabis and move us away from the stoner stigma?
Yeah I think we should have more designers and more brands and more elevated markets. You’ll see companies replacing their whole packaging, going to amazing creatives to redo their whole packaging for their strains and things like that. They know the market is growing and changing. It’s moving towards that.

The less the stigma, the less the stoner attitude [the better]. I also think that’s generational, too. That’s part of the hippy, people who are in their 50s, 60s, or older, they’re kind of still like that. It’s also where you live in the country. There are parts of the country are more inclined to that green lifestyle, that hippy lifestyle. But I think the majority is the direction of more modern, elevated packaging and accessories.

I was talking with one of the girls from Beboe and she said, “You wouldn’t put your really expensive wine you’re sharing with a dinner party in a plastic cup, right? So why would you do that with your expensive cannabis?” You don’t want to serve it in a crappy bong or whatever. I think it’s all moving in that modern direction.

It also helps when one of our most public—if you want to call her this—stoners is Rihanna, who is the most antithetical to what previously existed. I would say that definitely helps.
Yeah, she’s leading the way of not caring and being you. Being real.

Orlando’s First Medical Marijuana Dispensary Will Open Friday

Despite some of the snags Florida has experienced with the implementation of its comprehensive medical marijuana program, the state’s cannabis industry continues to expand. In fact, the city of Orlando is set to welcome its first licensed medical marijuana dispensary this Friday – providing patients with access to low-THC cannabis products.

According to a report from Orlando Weekly, Knox Medical will open its doors to the public later this week, starting with a media tour on Thursday, and then becoming fully operational by Friday morning. The new facility will be available for those patients registered as part of the state’s Compassionate Use program, giving them access to a variety of non-intoxicating oils and vapors to treat the symptoms of a small handful of serious conditions.

For now, those conditions are limited to cancer, epilepsy, glaucoma, AIDS, post-traumatic stress disorder, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Crohn’s disease, Parkinson’s and multiple sclerosis. Doctors are also permitted to provide patients with recommendations for similar conditions.

The Winter Garden-based company is on a roll. Just last week, it opened its first location in Gainesville, and it plans do the same in Jacksonville, Lake Worth, Tallahassee and St. Petersburg later this year.

Knox Medical, part of Knox Nursery, a 50-year-old institution in the Orlando area, told WUFT-FM that it “is changing people’s perceptions as to what cannabis in Florida is all about,” by creating a concept that was meant “to feel more like an Apple store than a cannabis store.”

“Knox Medical is working with Florida’s top architects and designers to create a cohesive dispensary experience that puts the needs and interests of our patients first,” José J. Hidalgo and Bruce Knox, the founders of Knox Medical, said in a statement.

“At every stage in this process, from cultivation, to processing, and now to dispensing superior quality medicines at these state-of-the-art facilities, our objective at Knox Medical is to redefine excellence in the medicinal cannabis field at every level,” they added. “We are privileged to serve our fellow Floridians in most need who will receive compassionate medical care at Knox Medical’s dispensaries.”

The folks at Knox Medical have not said whether they will try to get in on the businesses of growing and selling full strength medical marijuana when the state finally gets serious about assembling its program. However, considering that there were just over 1,000 low-THC patients as of January, most of the state’s dispensaries have their sights set on the 500,000 patients that are predicted to take advantage of cannabis medicine once the full-scale program becomes functional.

Some of the latest estimates show that Florida’s medical marijuana program could generate $1 billion within the next three years – making Florida the second largest medical marijuana market in the nation.

Gossip: Nearly Half Of Trump’s Twitter Followers Are Fake; Caitlyn Jenner Might Get Booted Off KUWTK

Has Donald Trump been buying followers on Twitter?

Donald Trump’s Twitter followers are growing. And by ‘growing’, we mean he is gaining hundreds of new followers every minute.

But a large percentage of the followers have no picture… or tweets… or followers themselves. Oh, and pretty much all of the accounts were created in May 2017.

In fact the President of the United States has somehow gained five million followers in the last few days, so it’s no surprise that many people are questioning if he has bought them. Or if he is attempting to beat Barack Obama’s 89.2 million (only 59 million to go, Trump).

According to Twitter Audit, 14,776,939 of Trump’s followers are fake. Meaning just over 50% of his followers are real. Granted, it’s pretty easy to buy followers – so Trump may not have actually bought them himself.

They could also be bots… or real people who all started their account on the same day and decided to follow him. Hundreds of people, however, are now questioning where the fake followers are coming from on Twitter.

Caitlyn Jenner Might Get Booted Off “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” Over Family Feud

The Kardashian clan have fallen out with Jenner over her tell-all book that discusses her transition to female.

In her frequent media appearances to promote the book, Jenner has been harshly critical about her ex-wife Kris Jenner’s struggles to accept her transition.

Kris Jenner trashed the book as “made up”, while Kim Kardashian said it was “unfair” and “untruthful”.

Following the spat, Caitlyn Jenner revealed that she doesn’t expect to appear on Keeping Up with the Kardashians in the future.

She told the Sunday Times: “As of right now, I don’t see myself doing that show any more.”
During the same interview the star said she was never “entirely comfortable” having sex with her ex-wife, adding:”While I believe I am better now, I have never been good at it.”

Speaking on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Kim Kardashian said there was “zero” chance that Kris Jenner would patch things up with Caitlyn.

She said: “Zero. No, one. No, I would say two percent. And those are [half-sisters] Kendall and Kylie. That’s their percentage. All fair, I think.”

What Is The Tragically Hip Doing With Medical Marijuana?

Newstrike Resources Ltd. has confirmed that one of Canada’s most iconic group of musical artists, The Tragically Hip, are the investors and partners identified indistinctly as the “band” in the Company’s Filing Statement dated May 18, 2017, filed as part of the recently completed business combination with HPI Holdings Ltd.

Newstrike’s common shares are expected to commence trading on a post-closing basis on the TSX Venture Exchange at the open of markets on Thursday, June 1, 2017, under the new ticker symbol “HIP”.

Newstrike is uniquely positioned at a time of unprecedented opportunity for companies in the emerging cannabis market: the dawn of a completely new consumer category. The members of The Tragically Hip are known to a generation of Canadians for their unwavering commitment to quality and integrity and, as investors and partners, we look forward to drawing on their artistic sensibilities and complementary business acumen to help Newstrike develop brands, within the government’s evolving regulatory framework, that reflect these same values,” said Newstrike’s CEO, Jay Wilgar. “I am proud, humbled and honoured that they chose to partner with us and invest in our team.”

A letter from The Tragically Hip to its fans was published on the band’s official website:

Hello Friends,

We are happy to announce that we have become partners with one of Canada’s newest, soon to be public, licensed producers of medicinal marijuana. The company is called Newstrike and, after much discussion and assessment on our part, we’ve decided that this company – and the many creative people in it – are a perfect fit for The Hip.

Medicinal cannabis is legal in Canada, and it already greatly benefits the health and well being of many of our fellow Canadians.

There is a commitment from the Federal Government to legalize recreational use in just over a year, and with good reason. The harm wrought by the prohibition of marijuana has been thoroughly researched and documented.

This is a common-sense-policy and, in our opinion, is a change for the best.

Newstrike has done its due diligence with respect to all aspects of this business. They’ve hired pre-eminent scientists and growers, developed large, well-structured sites and have the wherewithal and expertise to take this on.

We are excited about our involvement with Newstrike and are looking forward to the prospect of contributing creatively to their efforts.

More to come,

G + G + J + R + P

Gossip: Duchess Kate’s Maid Quits; Latest On Kim Kardashian And Taylor Swift Feud

A housekeeper who earned £35,000 a year to cook, clean and shop for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their children in their Norfolk home has quit her job after the post became ‘too demanding’, it has been reported. Sadie Rice, 35, has been working at the couple’s country home for two years, but reportedly refused to spend more time at their London home, Kensington Palace, which they share with Prince Harry. Ms Rice’s departure will be inconvenient at a time when William and Kate have been seeking to expand their household staff.

The Royal couple have spent an increasing amount of time in their London home since they decided to enroll Prince George at private Thomas’s School in Battersea, south London. A source at the Queen’s nearby Sandringham Estate told the Sun: ‘Sadie’s a hard worker but the job’s demands got too much, even for her. They wanted her to spend more time at Kensington Palace and her work was increasing all the time. She wasn’t having a normal life outside work. Sadie’s serving her notice and it seems nothing will change her mind. It’s their loss.’

Neither Sandringham Estate or Kensington Palace were able to confirm that Ms Rice has resigned from her post. A spokesperson for Kensington Palace said: ‘We cannot comment on the Duke and Duchess’s private staff.’

The unconfirmed departure of Ms Rice – who used to work for the Prince of Norway according to the Daily Star – comes as William and Kate seek to boost the size of the team who work to keep life at Kensington Palace running smoothly. Kate is also hunting for a new principal private secretary after it was reported that Rebecca Deacon is leaving the post this summer after ten years in royal service. The Royal couple have also recently hired a second housekeeper at Anmer Hall – Emma Boyce, 35, who previously worked for Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie for a decade.

Kim Kardashian Hasn’t Heard From Taylor Swift Since She Dropped The Receipts

Kim was asked if Taylor kicked Kendall Jenner out of the squad because of the Snapchat reveal. Kim says, “I don’t know if Kendall was a part of her squad. I don’t think she was. Yeah, so, I don’t think it was awkward.” Then Andy Cohen asked Kim if she’s spoken to Taylor or heard from her at all and Kim just shrugs and looks hilariously over it.

This Mother’s Gag Gift Got Her Arrested At Whole Foods

0

A prank gift for her teenage daughter triggered this mom’s worst shopping trip ever. Daphne Page, a 52-year-old resident of Richmond, Virginia, says picked up a funny present for her daughter at a yard sale: An alarm clock that looked like a bundle of dynamite. She left it in the backseat of her car while she went shopping at Whole Foods. When she came back out, the parking lot was pandemonium.

According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, a store employee spotted the clock in the car and alerted authorities. When Page tried to get to her car, the cops stopped her.

She told the Times-Dispatch:

“It was an obvious fake, and they were pursuing it as though it was an intentional hoax. That would be a horrible thing to do to people, and it’s not anything about who I am. They obviously shouldn’t be providing this stuff on the market for people to buy if it’s something that’s going to be so controversial when you actually have it in your hands. It was a product someone purchased in a store and that allowed me to think that it was OK to just have in my car and it wouldn’t be believable enough to cause any anxiety.”

Page was charged with the manufacture, possession or use of explosives and held in jail over the weekend. “Within my family, we have a robust sense of humor,” she said. With a family like that, this will surely be a hilarious story for the dinner table… someday.

5 Simple Tips For Stress-Free Wedding Booze

I got married recently. And while many aspects of the ceremony and reception required lots of thought and planning, it probably won’t surprise you to learn that the part I thought the most about is what exactly people were going to drink. Having spent several months agonizing (and tasting), here are five tips for stress-free wedding booze planning, without driving you to madness or poverty.

Know Your Venue

Figuring out how your wedding venue will handle alcohol service is the first step in planning, of course, and at least in our case was actually a driving factor in where we chose to have ours.

Many venues, especially traditional ones, offer little flexibility when it comes to customizing your experience. They might only offer you a few choices for wine (which is probably heavily marked up), and the bar options might also be minimal. If you don’t really care, then no worries, but then this piece isn’t for you!

Know Your Audience

Most obviously, are they big drinkers? If so, do they care if what they’re drinking is good? While of course you want to enjoy the drinks at your own wedding, if your family and friends can’t tell the difference between Barefoot and Barolo, you might want to consider just having some special bottles for the married couple, or maybe the head table. The same holds true with spirits, especially with an open bar, which leads into my next tip nicely…

Make Pre-Batched Cocktails

I’m a huge advocate of pre-batched custom cocktails instead of the generic open bar. For one thing, they help make your wedding stand out, and can feature drinks that you (the people who matter most) like to drink. They also help control cost, and can speed up bar service, all of which are things you and your guests will appreciate.

I like to pick two or three drinks to offer, of varying styles and strengths; a light vodka- or gin-based cocktail, sometimes with a sparkling wine float, a stronger whiskey-based cocktail, and maybe a wild card if you like. If all the bartender has to do is pour and shake/stir, all the better.

With Wine, Less Is More

I’ve seen people get carried away with the wines at their wedding: too many options just confuse people. We’re sticking to one sparkling wine, one white, and one red. The key is to remember that people will be having the wine before, during, and after dinner, so you want something versatile. With white wines, it’s nice to pick something that’s broadly pleasing: we’re going with Chablis, but you could also do well with a crisp Spanish white like Albarino, or a restrained Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire Valley. For reds, we’re opting for a Washington Syrah, though a slightly lighter-styled Cabernet Sauvignon or a Grenache might be a good choice as well.

Let The Staff Do Their Thing

Once the reception starts, relax and let the people you’re paying take over. Experienced caterers will be more than capable of handling any potential problems that arise, and I’d encourage you to trust their judgment, especially if they say that Uncle Jimmy’s had enough to drink.

Hugh Jackman In Insane Real-Life Mario Kart Race

Chances are, at some point in your life, you’ve played Mario Kart. If you haven’t, you should probably fix that immediately. But if you have, you know the mass appeal of the game stems from how un-realistic of a game it is. You’re controlling cartoons driving go-karts throwing shells and banana peels at one another. It’s a silly and stimulating fantasy.

Or so it would seem. Because Hugh Jackman came across some individuals playing real-life Mario Kart in Tokyo, where he is currently promoting his film Logan. Jackman shot video of the Mario Kart racers, sounding as excited as any other diehard Mario Kart fan, cheering on Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach.

“We’re here waiting for the green light and we’re in Tokyo and who’s gonna…. Oh! It’s Mario Kart!” Jackman said in voiceover, absolutely delighted. “Princess Peach! They’re all there.”

He kept filming long enough for the light to change and urge on the Mario Kart racers zip through the streets of Tokyo.

As you wait for Wolverine to become a playable Mario Kart character, you can watch Jackman’s Logan, which came out on DVD and Blu-Ray in the United State this past Tuesday.

City Named Weed May Soon Legalize, Well, You Guessed It

Residents of Weed, California, are used to the snide jokes. And the 2,967 citizens who call Weed home are even used to street signs bearing its name being ripped off by out-of-towners looking for a cheap souvenir. But what the they are not accustomed to is legally buying marijuana within the city limits. That may soon change.

Earlier this month, and ordinance was introduced at a Weed City Council hearing that would allow medical cannabis dispensaries. You read that right: You may be able to buy weed in Weed, as long as you have a medical marijuana card.

Last November, California overwhelmingly voted in favor of Proposition 64, allowing for the sale and consumption of adult recreational cannabis. But that law does not kick in until 2018. Even after the law takes effect, local governments are free to ban sales within their cities.

But the Weed City Council may soon test the waters, setting up a program for medical sales in advance of full legalization. Currently, medical marijuana sales are illegal within the city limits of Weed. If you are a patient seeking medical marijuana now, you have to either buy it on the black market or travel to a nearby city that allows dispensaries.

An ad hoc committee submitted an ordinance to the council recommending a program to regulate and allow medical cannabis dispensaries in the city.

The plan will be considered for adoption at the Weed City Council meeting scheduled for June 15.

According to a report in The Mt. Shasta News:

  • A green cross will not be allowed on signs.
  • Marijuana leaves will not be allowed on signs.
  • The name “weed” will not be allowed on signs. (Even though that is the name of the city.)
  • Medical dispensaries will not automatically convert to selling recreational marijuana in 2018.
  • The ordinance would allow a dispensary to be located only in a small area of the city, away from schools and daycare facilities.

The city of Weed is located in Siskiyou County along Interstate 5. Motorists making the trek from Portland to San Francisco no doubt have stopped for gas and joked about the name. The city also has spectacular views of Mt. Shasta, a beautiful 14,00o-foot snow-covered peak.

Weed in weed? It may soon be a reality. No joke.

Gossip: Kim Kardashian Knew Her Marriage Was Over During Honeymoon; Jamie Foxx’s Real Name Isn’t Jamie Foxx

Three-times married Kim Kardashian opened up about her second marriage to Kris Humphries, admitting she knew they weren’t meant to be forever.

“That last marriage…that whole situation was just really hard for me,” Kardashian said on Bravo’s “Watch What Happens Live.”

“At the time…I just thought, ‘Holy s–t, I’m 30 years old, I better get this together. I better get married.’”

She said she’s like “a lot of girls” who “go through that where they freak out and think that they’re getting old and they have to figure it out.”

Kardashian filed for divorce from professional basketball player Kris Humphries after 72 days of marriage. She was previously married to music producer Damon Thomas after eloping in 2000 when she was 19-years-old.

The reality star is currently married to rapper Kanye West. They have two children, a daughter, North, and a son, Saint.

Jamie Foxx’s Real Name Isn’t Jamie Foxx And The Internet Feels Betrayed

It turns out it’s Eric Marlon Bishop.

And although the nature of show business is literally people acting like someone else for our own entertainment and emotional release, people couldn’t get over the fact that Jamie Foxx wasn’t the actor’s real name.

Like, they were flabbergasted.
